The Mihara Yassa Festival is held in front of Mihara Station over a three-day period each summer. This festival, in which a great many revelers enjoy dancing what is called the "Yassa Dance," has a long and storied history. It is said to have begun around the mid-16th century, when Takakage Kobayakawa, a general of the Warring States Period, constructed a castle in Mihara to gain control over the surrounding land and sea and the townspeople celebrated the construction of the castle by singing and dancing throughout the night.

Although the form of the Yassa Dance has gradually changed with the times, the custom of dancing in an unconventional way while singing "Yassa, Yassa" to the accompaniment of shamisen (three-stringed lute), drums and other musical instruments has remained the same here in Mihara. Many of Mihara's local citizens participate in the festival, which is currently held over a three-day period during the "Obon" holiday, timed to welcome the spirits of our ancestors who visit during this period.

Many teams put on Yassa Dance performances in the festival grounds while wearing happi (livery coats) or yukata (summer robes) in a scene so lively that spectators often will jump in and start dancing with them-- everyone can have fun at the Mihara Yassa Festival. With the always effervescent Yassa Dance recently recognized as a distinctive folk dance of Hiroshima Prefecture, more and more visitors are coming to watch with each passing year.


The festival grounds are also lined with street stalls and there are fireworks displays at night. This summer, why not visit Mihara and enjoy participating in this light-hearted and cheerful dance?

Oni no inu ma ni sentaku (Doing the Laundry While the Demon is Away)
This original Kawanabe Kyosai (Gyosai) woodcut is printed on nineteenth century Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by Okura Magobei between 1881 - 1886 in the Kyosai Hyakuzu, 'Kyosai Hyaku-zu' (One Hundred Pictures by Kyosai).
It depicts scenes from Japanese folklore & proverbs dealing with household chores, games & demons (Yokai & Oni). The image is constructed by means of two horizontal subjects, the first scene contains a Japanese proverb or expression (Kotowaza), that reads; "Oni no inu ma ni sentaku" which loosely translates to (Doing the Laundry While the Demon is away) or (When the cat is away, the mice will play). The scene depicts a woman washing clothes and a large cat sitting nearby while a grumpy old man goes out for a walk.
The Japanese proverb for he lower scene reads; "Oya ni ninu ko wa oni no ko" which translates to (A child that does not resemble its parents is a Demon Child). Depending on the context, this expression can refer to a child who is misbehaving and is not adapting to the family expectations or it may refer to a simple children's game known as hide and seek. Here the artist depicts children at play, a mother, with her naked child wrapped around her shoulders, chasing a diminutive demon, who in turn is chasing after several frightened children. However, the expression of laughter on the mother's face as she grabs at the little red demon, indicates that it is all in fun. Laughter, in fact, appears to be the connecting link within these delightful and bizarre scenes.

Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) was only 6 years old when he joined the school of the great ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, along with such fellow pupils as Yoshitoshi, who followed him in 1850. Later Kyosai studied traditional Japanese painting at the Kano school. As befits this varied apprenticeship, Kyosai would embrace many styles and methods during his artistic career. His eclectic approach may also be partly attributable to a legendary sake-drinking habit, which could account for the more bizarre extremes of his chosen subject matter - in particular, weird demons and the bloody tortures of Hell. Kyosai can now be regarded as not only one of the last true ukiyo-e masters, but also as one of the first truly modernist painters of Japan.

"Night Parade Of Hell Creatures", edited by Jack Hunter (who also edited the ground-breaking extreme ukiyo-e anthology "Dream Spectres"), collects and considers over 100 of Kyosai's most innovative, demented and bizarre images - including multiple yokai, ghosts and demons - presented in large-format and full-colour throughout.

The child of Amatsukunitama. In preparation for the Descent of the Heavenly Grandchild (tenson kōrin), Amenohohi was first sent from the Plain of High Heaven to the residence of the earth kami Ōkuninushi, to pacify the Central Land of Reed Plains and engage in negotiations for its transfer to the Heavenly Grandchild. Amenohohi did not return, however, with the result that Amenowakahiko was entrusted with bow and arrow from the heavenly kami, and dispatched with the same mission. According to Kojiki, this appointment was at the recommendation of Omoikane, while Nihongi states that it was at the recommendation of all the heavenly kami.

Amewakahiko, however, took to wife Shitateruhime, the daughter of Ōkuninushi, and made plans to rule himself over the Central Land. Like his predecessor, Amewakahiko sent no report back to the Plain of High Heaven, with the result that Takamimusuhi and others convened a council of the heavenly kami; upon deliberation, they decided to dispatch the pheasant Nakime to inquire of Amewakahiko's true intentions. But Amawakahiko, urged on by Amenosagume, used the bow and arrow received from the heavenly kami to shoot the pheasant Nakime. The arrow pierced Nakime and continued to climb to heaven where it was found by Takamimusuhi; discerning the false heart of Amewakahiko, he flung the arrow back down at the Central Land where it struck Amewakahiko mortally in the breast.
Nihongi records that at the time he was killed, Amewakahiko was resting after observing the festival of first fruits (Niinamesai), while Kojiki states that he was lying in bed one morning. The histories relate that this event was the origin of the maxim, "fear a returning arrow," and the story is also touched upon in the "norito for the exorcism of a vengeful deity" (Tataru kami utsushiyarau).

Amewakahiko's name is mentioned in the fragmentary records of the Settsu no kuni fudoki, the Utsubo monogatari, Sagoromo monogatari, as well as the later Otogi zōshi. His name appears to have been widely used as a generic reference to male deities who descended from heaven to earth.
Deities called Amewakahiko are worshiped at some shikinaisha in the province of Izumo.

A Demon in the Sky:
The Tale of Amewakahiko, a Japanese Medieval Story

In most cultures demons and dragons reside at the heart of the supernatural, where their distinct status reflects their various cultural roles. This is also true of Japanese culture and folklore, where these creatures play prominent roles.
For present-day Japanese, oni (demons or ogres) typically reside in Buddhist hell to punish mortal sinners, but for their medieval counterparts, the oni's role and the space oni occupied were much more flexible. Perhaps a prime example of this is Amewakahiko söshi (Tale of Amewakahiko; fifteenth century), a fictional story that recounts one legendary origin of Tanabata (Festival of the Weaver, the Star Festival), the celebration of the annual meeting of the Weaver Maid and the Cowherd, who represent the stars Vega and Altair, respectively. In this version of the Tanabata story, an oni is standing in the beautiful serene sky. This oni turns out to be the father of a kairyüö (Kairyu-O, a dragon king of the ocean) who also lives in the sky. This dragon king calls himself Amewakahiko (sometimes Amewakamiko), hence the title.

The plot of The Tale of Amewakahiko
is similar to "Cupid and Psyche" by Lucius Apuleius (second century CE). Some scholars in Japan recognize "Cupid and Psyche" as the source of The Tale of Amewakahiko, and others read the dragon king's tale as indigenous to Japan. Although there is no finally persuasive evidence that the Japanese tale was influenced by "Cupid and Psyche," it is worthwhile to examine the Apuleian tale's connection to The Tale of Amewakahiko and to share these different scholarly perspectives from Japan in an English-language publication. Thus in this essay I discuss the various possible origins of the tale. Thinking of The Tale of Amewakahiko in a Japanese folkloric and literary context reveals a specifically medieval Japanese view of space boundaries (or lack thereof) of underground, earth, and heaven that oni and a dragon travel; it also suggests that studies of ancient and classical Japanese literature (periods of ancient and classical literature, 645-1185 CE) by medieval Japanese scholars influenced the choice of the characters' names and their actions in this tale.



--- Plot and Genre of The Tale of Amewakahiko
One day a huge serpent appears in front of a wealthy family's house. The serpent demands one of the family's three daughters for his wife or, he threatens, he will destroy the whole family. The two older daughters refuse, but the youngest daughter consents. A huge house is built near a pond as part of the wedding preparations requested by the serpent, and there, alone, she awaits her snake husband. When the gigantic serpent appears, he asks the girl to cut off his head. As she does so, a handsome, young gentleman appears, and they live happily in their newly built house. After a while, the husband reveals his true identity as a dragon king of the ocean and tells the girl that he must go to the sky to do some business. He tells her how to find him in the sky if he does not come back. He then orders her not to open a certain treasure chest-if the chest is opened, he tells her, he will not be able to return to earth. While he is away, her two older sisters visit her and become jealous of her wealth and happiness. They open the treasure chest from which only smoke arises. When the girl learns that her husband cannot return anymore, she goes to Kyoto as instructed by her husband before he left and buys a gourd whose vine grows to the sky in one night.

Climbing the vine up to the sky, the girl journeys in search of her husband, whose name, the reader has learned, is Amewakahiko (or Amewakamiko). With great difficulty, she finally finds him. Although they are happy together, Amewakahiko expresses his concern that if his father, an oni, becomes aware of her, there could be trouble. So whenever his father visits him, the dragon king changes his wife into a pillow or fan. But the secret is finally revealed one day, and the oni-father takes her away and imposes on her four difficult tasks. …

Once upon a time
at the home of 佐藤松吉 Sato Matsukichi there lived a young warrior called 理八 Rihachi.
The family was very poor and Rihachi was sent to work for the rich family of 小田 Oda in 館矢間村 Tateyamamura. From there he could take part in the Kendo training of 高木与惣兵衛 Takagi Yosoemon at the local training hall.
After three years, when Rihachi was 20 years old, there was no other student who could beat him. Yet the teacher did not promote him. Finally Rihachi understood he was not yet ready, pulled himself together and started anew to practise alone at a wild place called 万騎の峰, which the locals called "Tengu no Miya" 天狗の宮 "Palace of the Tengu".
On the mountain path there were dangerous wolves on the road and beautiful ladies trying to distract him and even severed human heads were flying around - but despite all these terrible things, Rihachi was undisturbed and continued his practise.
Finally on the 107th night at midnight the Tenug showed up and took him to the 天狗の角力場 Training place of the Tengu, where he was shown how to fly in space.
Later Rihachi himself was venerated as a 天狗尊 Tengu in the village and he opened a training hall for martial arts.
He became very famous and won many official competitions and got the name Riken 飛剣 "flying sword".

This print shows the Hirokoji leading from 筋違橋御門前 to 外堀(神田川) the Sotobori of the Kanda river. In the front is part of 筋違橋御門の櫓 the watch tower and in the far back part of 神田神社 Kanda Jinja.
It is at the beginning of the 中山道 Nakasendo along the Sotobori. Nearby is 昌平橋 Shoheibashi. Crossing the river leads to a road to Ueno, for the Shogun to visit 上野寛永寺 the graves at Kanei-Ji.
Since eight small roads come together here, the name was given to this district.

In the front is a 大名行列 Daimyo Gyoretsu, procession of a lord and his samurai warriors.

a museum of the history of Tokyo during the Edo period.
The Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum opened its doors in March 1993 as a space to reflect on the history and culture of Edo-Tokyo and envision the city and life of the future. Housed in a unique building modeled after an elevated-floor type warehouse, the museum has been a landmark and popular tourist attraction in Tokyo since its opening.
The permanent exhibition,
showcasing original objects and replicas, offers visitors a journey through the 400-year history of Edo-Tokyo since Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum holds special exhibitions at the first floor gallery five to six times a year and carries out various other events, including lectures and workshops on the history and culture of Edo-Tokyo.

wagasa 和傘 Japanese paper umbrella

The umbrella is used quite often, especially during the rainy season.
But in haiku, it is used as a nonseasonal topic.

The most famous one is probably the
"Umbrella with the eye of a snake ja no me gasa  蛇の目傘",
which also is often used in Kabuki plays.

The umbrella was invented in ancient China as a canopy to be held over a nobleman. In 552, during the Asuka period, the umbrella was introduced to Japan through Kudara (the Korean peninsula) as part of Buddhist ceremonies.



The umbrella in Japan was originally called 'kinugasa', but because it came from China ('kara'), it was also called 'karakasa'. The original form of the umbrella was improved over time: the center tube and ribs were made from bamboo, and the covering was made from oilpaper, waterproofed with persimmon, linseed oil and China wood oil. Despite its strong water resistance, its major flaws were that it was neither light nor durable.

There are two types of Japanese umbrella:
the bangasa (coarse oilpaper umbrella) and janomegasa (snake-eye umbrella/paper umbrella). The janomegasa is made from paper, is blue in the center and at the edges, and white in between, and looks like the eye of a snake when viewed from above. This umbrella does have variations, such as painted black rings on the surface and the application of other astringent materials.

Currently, the kano umbrella, made in Kano, Gifu Prefecture, is proud to be to the only place in Japan to be a major producer of traditional Japanese umbrellas.

Differences between Japanese and Western umbrellas
Many people think that Japanese umbrellas and Western umbrellas are not so different. Nothing could be further from the truth. Both come from completely different traditions in terms of use, design, materials, structure, and craft expertise.
First of all,
the materials are very different. Western umbrellas are made with artificial materials like plastic, polyester, steel, etc. On the other hand, Japanese umbrellas are made with natural materials like washi paper, bamboo, etc.
A Japanese umbrella has 30-70 ribs while most Western ones only have eight. Western umbrellas open when the tension in the metal ribs press up on the covering of the umbrella. Japanese umbrellas open as the many thin bamboo ribs spread the washi paper and stretch it tight. When open, Western umbrellas are dome shaped while Japanese umbrellas have straight line.
They also fold away differently.
Western umbrellas are wrapped around the central column and handle. Japanese umbrellas collapse together and most of the surface structure is folds inward and out of sight.
The ribs of Japanese umbrellas
are made by splitting bamboo into very thin strips. The precision of the final rib structure and the washi paper glued to it work together to fold away simply and elegantly.
When a Western umbrella is put in a stand
or leaned against something the handle is always up. Japanese umbrellas stand with the handle touching the ground.

Traditional Craft Skills that Fashion Umbrellas from Bamboo and Paper
Still known today as a center for the production of traditional Japanese umbrellas, manufacture of wagasa began in the Kano district of Gifu City in the middle of the 18th century. At that time the state had feudal organization and the local lords had a great deal of economic and political autonomy within the domains to which they were assigned. The feudal lord who was transferred in to rule the feudal domain around Gifu had to contend with a local economy that was devastated by floods. He saw an opportunity to stimulate local industry and to provide the means to supplement the living of the impoverished lower samurai (warrior elite) by encouraging them to make umbrellas.

The local area had a long history of paper making. Mino-washi, a local product, was a strong handmade paper due to the long fibers it contained. Good quality bamboo was to be found in the valley of the Kiso River, and it was easy to obtain sesame oil and lacquer from the local mountains, indispensable for water proofing. These advantages made the area well suited to umbrella making, since the basic construction of Japanese umbrellas involves affixing paper over a frame of bamboo-strip ribs, and then applying oil and lacquer for waterproofing.

Production peaked at the beginning of the 20th century, when over a million umbrellas per year were manufactured. Since then the metal-and-cloth Western-style umbrella has become generally used, and the number of people who use Japanese umbrellas has dwindled. These days the local craftworkers make only few tens of thousands of wagasa a year.

The traditional Japanese umbrella uses only natural materials and, requiring several months to undergo the various separate processes that are needed for completion, the skilled hands of a dozen seasoned craftworkers contribute to the finished item. In addition to the usual type of rain umbrella, Gifu Wagasa also come in various other types including large red outdoor parasols that are used to provide shade on outdoor occasions, such as tea ceremonies. Then there are smaller colorful buyo-gasa that figure in performances of traditional Japanese dance. Gifu Wagasa are an indispensable part of traditional Japanese art and culture.

Not only its durability against wind and snow, its unique beautiful yarn decoration is outstanding enough that it was designated as an intangible cultural asset of Yonago city (Tottori Pref., West Japan) by the Japanese government.
Through no less than 70 processes, loads of time and work are required until an umbrella is finished.
Sanin District, in West Japan, is famous for its harsh weather, heavy rain and wind in summer, and snow in winter. To use in such conditions, Yodoegasa is durable with its heavy-duty parts compared to other Japanese umbrellas made in other regions in Japan.
Another distinctive feature of Yodoegasa can be seen on the spreaders connecting the pole and the ribs are finely ornamented with colorful yarns. Ordinary Japanese traditional umbrellas only have simple round shaped decoration made with knitted yarn, But the decoration on Yodoegasa is made by special technique called "kikyo-kazari (Decoration of Kikyo flower: Platycodon grandifloras or balloon flower; a lavender colored flower with five pointed and curled petals) " which is a Kikyo-petal-shaped decoration made with knitted yarn on the ribs .
The skillful technique
and the beauty of Yodoegasa are being revalued by people all over the world, and now it became popular as an interior purpose as well as primary use.

Jakuren (寂蓮) (also known as Fujiwara o Sadanaga (藤原定長)
before becoming a monk) (1139–1202) was a Japanese Buddhist priest and poet. He was adopted by the noted poet Fujiwara no Shunzei upon the death of Shunzei's younger brother. Shunzei originally intended for Sadanaga to be his heir; however, he subsequently had two male offspring of his own, and Sadanaga was forced to step aside in favor of Fujiwara no Sadaie. As was common practice at the time,
he became a monk, and acquired the religious name of Jakuren. Taking Saigyo as his model, he traveled around the country, composing poems of his travels. He was well regarded in his time and frequently associated with Fujiwara no Teika. He was one of the six compilers of the eighth imperial waka anthology, the famous Shin Kokin Wakashū, and thirty-five of his poems were selected for the work. Before he died, he adopted Fujiwara no Ietaka, pupil to Shunzei.
One of his poems was included in the famous poetry anthology Hyakunin Isshu.

Yamagata umbrella making has a history of about 220 years.
It started in the late Edo period (1789) with the introduction by 矢田部清太郎 Yatabe Kiyotaro.
In the year 1849, the 水野藩 Mizuno clan was moved from 遠州浜松 Hamamatsu to Yamagata, and the umbrella making by low-ranking Samurai was encouraged.
