Manpukuji 萬福禅寺 - 萬福寺 - 万福寺 Manpuku-Ji Zen Temple
1 Chome-49-1 Minamimagome, Ōta

The temple is famous for the Haiku memorial stone of Muro Saisei, see below.

The temple is already mentioned in the 江戸時代名所図絵 Edo Meisho Zue.
The three main statues are Amida Nyorai, Kannon Bosatsu, Seishi Bosatsu.
The temple was built by 梶原景時 Kajiwara Kagetoki (?1140 - 1200).
Kagetoki was a spy for Minamoto no Yoritomo in the Genpei War, and a warrior against the Taira clan. He came to be known for his greed and treachery.
- - - More about Kagetoki in the WIKIPEDIA !
The temple burned down in 1320 and fell in despair. In 1575, it ws re-built as a Zen temple by 明堂文龍大和尚 high priest Meido Bunryu.
In 1606, after the death of members of the Kajiwara clan it fell in despair again.

They date back to the Muromachi period and lived more than 600 years. Pilgrims to the Ise Shrine passed here on their way back, planted the trees and used it as a prayer place to express their gratitude for a safe trip.
The three trees were lost in the early Showa period, but names of shops and a bus station in the area still remind of them.

photo from 1940.

In this area there used to be many pine trees, called the Pine Field of Magome village 馬込村松原 Magome mura Matsubara.

There used to be a mound, Sanbonmatsu-zuka 三本松塚, thought to be a Kofun mound, in the compound of the
Shrine 天祖神社 Tenso Jinja. a shrine also refered to as 伊勢宮 Ise Shrine.
2 Chome-28-14 Kitamagome, Ōta.
It was the protector shrine of the valleys of Kita-Magome, 北久保 Kitakubo, 松原 Matsubara and 堂寺 Dotera.

Further research in 1992 found that the moat was not a Kofun after all.

Magome Writers' Village (馬込文士村 Magome Bunshimura)

- quote -
In the early 1900s, the area of Magome in Ota Ward attracted a number of Japan's top writers and artists. Novelists, sculptors and calligraphers all moved to the quiet countryside outside the capital to practice their crafts in a supportive community. Today, their cultural contributions are remembered in a comprehensive walking trail around the area known as the Magome Writers' Village.
A mural just outside Omori Station
depicting the faces of the Magome writers marks the eastern end of the walking trail. Much of the route is highlighted simply by plaques detailing individual writers or artists and their connection to a particular spot in the ward. However, several extant structures allow a more intimate glimpse into the lives of these cultural giants of the Taisho and Showa Periods. Visit the peaceful grounds of the home of Ozaki Shiro, a driving force in the local writer's community. Nearby, a detailed exhibit showcases the life and works of newspaper founder Tokutomi Soho. Along the southern end of the route, samples of the art of calligrapher Kumagai Tsuneko fill the rooms of her tiny home.
The Ota Folk Museum
sits at the midpoint of the route and offers a detailed look at not only the resident writers and their works but also the geography, culture and prehistory of the surrounding area. While exhibits are signed in Japanese only, an English pamphlet provides a thorough introduction to the museum's main themes.

Koshu Crystal Carving 甲州水晶貴石細工 Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku
This craft started some one thousand years ago, after quartz was found near Mount Kinpu beyond Mitakeshosenkyo, which is famous for its beautiful views. When it was first discovered, it was used as an ornament but by the middle of the Edo period (1600-1868), Shinto priests were taking the raw material to Kyoto to have them made into gems.
Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku started in the latter days of the Edo period, when master craftsmen were welcomed to the area and began polishing quartz on an iron sheet using a emery powder called kongousha made from a very hard stone, rather in the way that diamonds are polished.
Ornaments and items of jewelry are being produced today. Many of these pieces have been created to make the most of the distinctive features of the natural gem stone, meaning that no two items are alike.

Shirahige Jinja, Omi
An earlier post gave the lineage of the family called Shirahige. This post is about a visit to Shirahige Jinja in Omi. Remember how Yamato began in Awa-no-kuni, around Lake Biwa in Omi-no-kuni.
Shirahige Jinja (白鬚神社)
is in Takashima, Shiga-ken, located on the western shore of Lake Biwa. It is separated from the lake by a busy highway. Its first torii stands 58 m offshore at a height of 10 m. From the second torii of the jinja, the sun will rise through the torii on the lake on equinox days, for the shrine faces east, as most old shrines do.
This old shrine
was established by Yamato-hime, daughter of Suinin Tenno in the 25th year of his reign. The enshrined kami are Sarutahiko Okami and Shirahige Myojin. Sarutahiko is best known as the kami of the land who guided Ninigi, grandson of Amateru, in the tenson-korin tale. He is called the kami who opens the way.
Shirahige Myojin is an old man with a white beard, and he represents longevity. From our studies, we consider Sarutahiko and Shirahige (Sirahige) to be one. Recall our earlier post describing the great healing abilities of Sarutahiko and how he was the only one that Amateru met with just before his passing.
The haiden hall is unpainted wood that gives it a rustic feeling.
There are eleven sha on the premises. On the mountain beyond the red torii is the Toyouke Daijingu. It enshrines Toyouke Okami, grandfather of Amateru and great-grandfather of Oshihomimi.

Saitama Koma-jinja 埼玉 高麗神社 Koma Shrine
833 Ooaza Niihori, Hidaka, Saitama Prefecture
Koma Shrine is located in Niihori, Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture. The enshrined deities are Koma no Koshiki Jakko, Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Takenouchi no Sukune (a legendary statesman).
The shrine was founded in 716 by an emissary from Goguryeo, Koma no Koshiki Jakko, as the head shrine to guard the Koma district (present-day Hidaka City).
It was originally named Shirahige Myojin and is the headquarters of all the 55 Shirahige and Shirahige Myojin shrines in the Musashi province (present-day Saitama Prefecture), from which it is also called Koma Soja Shrine (the head shrine).
In the precinct are a lot of cultural properties including the Old Koma Family Residence. Since the Meiji period, a lot of people, who had visited this shrine to offer a prayer, became powerful politicians including prime ministers, the shrine has been worshipped as Shusse (career success) Myojin. Koma Shrine is also famous for cherry blossoms in spring and chrysanthemum flowers in fall.

- quote -
Momodayū / Shiradayū Shinkō
Momodayū is also called Hyakudayū.
The name Momodayū appears as the kami worshipped by courtesans (yūjo) of Eguchi and Kanzaki in Ōe no Masafusa's Yujoki, and Masafusa also wrote in his Kairaishiki that Kugutsu worshipped "the hundred kami" (hyakushin). The Ryōjin hishō records courtesans "praying to Momodayū for the love of men" and calls it "that which courtesans like". Momodayū is a kami worshipped by puppeteers (Kugutsu, also written as Kugutsushi) and sangaku, and was also the kami of courtesans.
Momodayū was regarded as a male kami and many hundreds of wooden images of him were carved and enshrined. Momodayū is enshrined as a massha at various shrines in western Japan, including the massha Momodayū shrine worshipped by Ebisu Mawashi at Nishinomiya Shrine, and those at Nagato ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Jinja, Hiyoshi Taisha, Iwashimizu Hachimangu, and Usa Jingu. He is also worshipped as a "tutelary of roads" (dōsojin) and as a "kami that prevents pox" (hōsō yoke no kami).
Shiradayū is the first massha of those at the shrine Kitano Tenmangu, and is worshipped at Tenmangu shrines in various regions.
Shiradayū is often confused with Momodayū. One story relates that a shrine priest (shikan) of Ise's Outer Shrine, Watarai Haruhiko (862 - 944) who became a follower of Sugawara no Michizane, evolved into the "enshrined kami" (saijin) Shiradayū.
Another tells that the saijin at Shirahige Jinja in Ōmi was enshrined as Shiradayū.

Senzoku 千束 Senzoku district "1000 measures"
Taito ward 台東区 千束, in the Shitaya area

The name Senzoku is very old. The area was near 浅草天王町 Asakusa Tenno-Cho, reaching all the way to 千住 Senju.
One explanation of this name "1000 measures of rice" say the area was near the 浅草寺 Asakusa Temple Sensō-Ji and had to provide kuyoo 供養 food offerings (rice) for the 1000 priests and monks of the famous temple district:
senzoku 千僧供 food offerings for 1000 monks.
But this explanation is most probably wrong.
soku (zoku) 束 was a measurement for the amount of 穎稲 rice before the harvest, 1束 - 稲10把
(10把 - 1刈)- 束刈(そくかり)sokukari / 束把刈(そくはかり)sokubakari
This would suggest that on the fields of the temple, they harvested 1000 soku of rice.

Sensoku ike / Senzoku ike 千束池 / 洗足池 Senzoku pond
洗足池 "pond for washing the feet"

- quote -
Senzoku-ike is located in Northern Ota Ward, six stops from Ikegami Station. The area is named after the famous Buddhist priest Nichiren Shonin who washed his feet here on his way to Ikegami Temple. Senzoku literally means "washing your feet" which is exactly what Nichiren Shonin and many priests after him did at the large pond located here.
Senzoku-Ike (Pond)
Senzoku-Ike pond is famous for its scenic views and is a spiritual power spot where the natural energy from local vegetation is abundant. The park and pond are an ideal place for both walking and boating. There are paths around the water that will take you past small temples and the area where priests used to rest on their pilgrimage to Ikegami Honmonji Temple. Much of the path is covered in shade and trees and the pond can be circumvented fairly quickly taking a path approximately one and a half kilometers in length.
Small boats and swan boats can both be rented nearby the station side of the pond for those interested in spending 30 minutes or an hour on the water.
Senzoku-Ike Park
The park area surrounds the pond and includes wooden paths that cross over the water and a wide variety of trees and vegetation. There are many spots to stop for a picnic and during certain seasons and holidays, there are several food stands and activities to liven up the walk.
The graves of Katsu Kaishu and his wife who wanted to be buried with a view facing Mount Fuji. Katsu Kaishu was commander of the Tokugawa Navy and is famous for his role in the surrender of Edo.
Senzokuhachiman Shrine
The small shrine here is located on the opposite side of the pond from the station on a small hill. The shrine is surrounded by nature and a few statues in the shape of large horses. There are interesting events held in the shrine during festivals such as the Edo-Sato-Kagura (Japanese holy Shintoism dance).

Senzoku Hachiman Jinja 千束八幡神社 Senzoku Hachiman Shrine

Edo Meisho Zue 江戸名所図会

- quote -
... Another story suggestive of the mysterious charm of the Senzoku pond tells how Minamoto-no Yoritomo (1147-99), the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, camped overnight in 1180 at Senzoku Hachiman shrine (glimpsed in the woods on the left of the woodblock print). While he was admiring the moon reflected in the water that night, a magnificent wild horse emerged from nowhere, its satin-smooth coat shining in the moonlight. Yoritomo caught the stallion, which he named Ikezuki ("Moon in the Pond"), and the steed became the shogun's beloved companion in his subsequent battles — he rode the horse during his entry into Kamakura later the same year.
