KAIDO - Kasagi Kaido

https://gokurakuparadies.blogspot.com/2016/03/ishi-yakushi-stone.html

.......................................................................

Kasagi Kaido 笠置街道 Kasagi Highway
From 伊賀上野 Iga Ueno to 笠置山 Kasagiyama.

Part of the
伊賀越奈良道 Igagoe Naramichi Road crossing Iga to Nara
From Ise to 伊賀国上野 Iga Ueno, including access to the
大和街道 Yamato Kaido, 伊賀街道 Iga Kaido, 奈良街道 Nara Kaido.

Legends from 誓多林町 Setarin cho town

shiroshika, hakuroku 白鹿 white deer
On the Northern clif along 新笠置街道 the new Kasagi Kaido there are two large foot imprints in the rock.
They say they are the hooves from the white deer which the deity 春日明神 Kasugai Myojin rode on his way to 鹿島 Kashima.
Another legend relates these imprints to a huge 天狗 Tengu.
Once a wicked Tengu stole 太鼓 the big drum from the temple hall 誓多林堂 Setarin Do. He had hung the drum on a branch of 松の木 a pine tree and banged on it.
The blood of the Tengu still sticks to the drum, they say.

- quote -
Morioka Castle (盛岡城 Morioka-jō)
is a hirayama-style Japanese castle constructed in 1611.
It was the seat of the Nanbu clan, a tozama daimyō clan who ruled over Morioka Domain, Mutsu Province in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. The castle is located in what is now central Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It was also referred to as Kozukata Castle (不来方城 Kozukata-jō), but strictly speaking this name pertains to the predecessor of Morioka Castle on the same site.
- Location
The confluence of the Kitakami River and the Nakatsu River was of strategic importance in control of river traffic in central Ōshū.
The location of the castle was also intended to control traffic on the Ōshū Kaidō highway from the capital to the northern end of Honshū.
- History
Because of its strategic geographic position, the area around Morioka had been regarded as the centre of northern Ōshū since the construction of nearby Shiwa Castle by the Yamato dynasty in the early Heian period.
The area was later contested between the Abe clan and the Kiyohara clan in the Former Nine Years War, and it is believed that the first fortification had been erected on this site by the Kiyohara clan. The Kiyohara were destroyed by the Northern Fujiwara of Hiraizumi, who in turn were destroyed by the Minamoto clan of the Kamakura shogunate. The area then came under the control of the Kudo clan, who were retainers of the Minamoto. During the Muromachi period, the Kudo clan was divided between supporters of Emperor Go-Daigo and supporters of the Ashikaga clan, and were thus displaced by the Nanbu clan, who had already been established to the north. ...

Togakushi Kodo 戸隠古道 Togakushi Old Road

source and more photos : blog.goo.ne.jp/heppoco...

- quote
- Trace the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to five shrines.
The Togakushi Kodo Trail
is a pilgrimage route approximately ten kilometers long that connects the five shrines of the Togakushi Shrine:
the Okusha, the Kuzuryusha, the Chusha, the Hokosha, and the Hinomikosha.
The Togakushi Shrine was established on the slopes of Mount Togakushi, which has been a center of Japan's traditional mountain worship since ancient times. Sometimes called "Togakushi Sanzembo," the shrine has been visited by throngs of pilgrims through the ages.
In recent years, the Togakushi Shrine has become popular as a spot endowed with mystical power, but if you want to learn about its history and culture, we recommend that you trace the pilgrimage route that our ancestors followed.
Starting from the base of the shrine, closest to the urban area of Nagano, one comes to the Hokosha, the Hinomikosha, and the Chusha in that order. Farthest into the interior are the Kuzuryusha and the Okusha, which are located in the same area. You can find plenty of enjoyment just by walking the trail and inhaling the fragrances of the natural environment, but starting from the Okusha, you can also climb Mount Togakushi and Happo-nirami as a day trip. The many ridges along the rugged trail to the summit provide a succession of panoramic views that evoke the mystery of the region.
- At the Togakushi Shrine, enjoy nature and cuisine to the fullest!
The Togakushi Shinrin Botanical Park is located close to the entrance to the Togakushi Shrine Oku-sha. Within the 71-hectare park, visitors can stroll along footpaths while getting a close-up feel for how nature breathes in and out from one season to the next. More than 750 plant species can be found in the park, and visitors can enjoy an abundance of flowering plants, including skunk cabbage and spotted bellflower, to name but two. More than 120 species of birds are said to inhabit the park over the course of a year, making this one of the premier birdwatching sites in Japan. One can hear their beautiful songs cutting through the clear air. The park features a number of areas where visitors can get close to nature, including a skunk cabbage patch, a botanical observation area, a pond surrounded by greenery, and a relaxing glade. An educational center near the entrance displays specimens, models, dioramas, and the like as a way to introduce visitors to the nature of the Togakushi region.

Togakushi soba 戸隠蕎麦 Togakushi buckwheat noodles

When one hears the mention of Togakushi cuisine, one immediately thinks "soba!"
History says that soba is the staple food that pilgrims carried with them in ancient times. The distinctive Togakushi style of serving soba is called "batchi-mori," in which five or six folded handfuls of soba are arranged in a single bamboo strainer. Pungent Togakushi daikon radish is used as a seasoning. This is truly the flavor of Togakushi.

kitsune 狐 fox
In 仙台市 Sendai there lived a foot soldier called 勝又弥左衛門 Katsumata Yazaemon. He was famous for catching foxes.
Once he was at the foot of 榴ヶ岡 Tsutsujigaoka along the Azuma Kaido. There lived anold fox who took the chicken from farmers and played tricks to travelers.
On orders from the local government Yazaemon had to kill this fox.
Yazaemon was in mourning for his late father (and there fore should not do this), but the governor came many times. Yozaemon consulted with his friend, a priest who told him he should not kill during the 49 daya after this father's death.
The priest then took him out for a drink and ate quite a lot, much more than usual. Yazaemon found this suspicious, went outside and placed a trap near the door.
When the priest went home, he got caught in the trap.
The fox/priest had tried to out-do a human, but was caught none the less.

新八明神 Deity Shinpachi Myojin
Shinpachi was the second son of a farmer working for the Samurai 白石運三郎 Shiroishi Unsaburo. He worked diligently.
The wife of his older brother was quite a villain and was bad to her stepfather.
Around 1815, his sister-in-law prepared 大師講の団子 dumplings for the Daishi rituals and put some needles in them.
When Shinpachi offered a dumpling to his father, the needle stuck out. The sister-in-law went to the daikan 代官 assistant deputy governor and accused Shinpachi for having tried to kill his father. Shinpachi tried to cover for his sister-in-law, did not tell the truth and was executed as punishment.
Before he died he said: "If my head falls to the north when cut off, I am innocent and will curse you!"
Soon after that the family of Shinpachi fell into ruin.
The villagers erected a memorial stone for him along the Iwadeyama Highway near the river 花川 Hanakawa with the inscription "Shinpachi Myojin".

munewari Amida 胸割り阿弥陀 Amida with a cut breast
Once upon a time
A priest from the temple 充国寺 Jukoku-Ji in Sendai, Aoba was on his way back from Kyoto along the Kiso Highway. Suddenly a robber attacked him, but a tree at the roadside fell down and killed the robber. The priest could not forget the piercing look of hatred of the man. When he was back at his temple, a baby had been born to a family of his parish and he went there for a blessing. He picked up the baby and when he looked at his face, it had exactly the expression of the robber on the highway. The priest was so afraid, he killed the baby.
Therefore he was to be executed and take to 七北田刑場 the execution ground in Nanakita. When the executioners came to pick him up, all the 小僧 little temple acolytes cried as they sent him off. They went back to the main hall . . . as there was a lound sound of something crashing.
The statue of Amida had a cut right through the breast !

source : legend.main.jp/50-aobaku-008-munewariamida...
They sent the statue back to Kyoto to have it repaired, but when it was brought back the breast was cut again.
The statue could not be repaired and so it remained cut.

- - - - - There is another story about Amida no munewari 阿弥陀胸割
- quote -
Amida's Riven Breast
R. Keller Kimbrough
Amida's Riven Breast (Amida no munewari) is classified as a ko-jōruri shōhon, but is also known to have been performed as sekkyō by Tenma Hachidayū and to be thematically consistent with the sekkyō of its time. This Buddhist tale is divided into six acts, the third act of which contains a battle scene. In Amida no munewari, the siblings Teirei and Tenju lose their parents at the ages of five and seven. Then when the brother Teirei is ten years old, he proposes to his elder sister that they sell themselves as slaves to a rich man. Tenju is eventually saved by her Buddhist devotion.
The story emphasizes the necessity of dan haramitsu practice of engaging religious professionals.

The old Shinano Province 信濃国 / Shinshū 信州 Shinshu
... now 長野県 Nagano Prefecture.

- quote -
Shinano bordered on
1 Kōzuke, 2 Musashi, 3 Kai, 4 Suruga, 5 Tōtōmi, 6 Mikawa, 7 Mino, 8 Hida, 9 Etchu and 10 Echigo.
The ancient capital was located near modern-day 松本 Matsumoto, which became an important city of the province.
- Historical record
In 713, the road that traverses Mino and Shinano provinces was widened to accommodate increasing numbers of travelers through the Kiso District of modern Nagano Prefecture.
In the Sengoku period,
Shinano Province was often split among fiefs and castle towns developed, including 小諸 Komoro, 伊那 Ina, and 上田 Ueda. Shinano was one of the major centers of Takeda Shingen's power during his wars with Uesugi Kenshin and others.
Suwa Taisha Shrine was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the province.
In 1871, during the Meiji period,
with the abolition of the han system and the establishment of prefectures (Haihan Chiken) after the Meiji Restoration, Shinano Province was administratively separated in 1871 into Nagano and Chikuma prefectures. These two tentative governmental and territorial units were reconfigured together again in 1876. This became the modern prefecture of Nagano, which remains substantially unchanged from that time.

The Hokkoku Kaido Road is the generic name of the main roads in Hokuriku region in the Edo period.

At the present, this byroad is often referred to as the Hokkoku Kaido Road.
The road with a total length of 140 km crossed the whole area of Shinshu region and linked Oiwake (present Karuizawa) on the Nakasendo Highway and Takada (present Joetsu City) on the Hokuriku Highway.
This road connecting the Pacific side and the Northern coastal side of the country played an important role as the gold route that carried the gold mined at Sado Gold Mine and the sankin kotai (the system of "alternate attendance") route of the feudal lords including that of Maeda clan, who were given the fiefs in the Hokuriku region.
It was also used for carrying commodities from the Hokuriku region to the Kanto region.
The road was sometimes called "Zenkoji Kaido," 善光寺街道 because it was used by the pilgrims visiting Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. At the present, Route 18 traces about the same route as the Edo period Hokkoku Kaido.
