Koshu Crystal Carving 甲州水晶貴石細工 Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku
This craft started some one thousand years ago, after quartz was found near Mount Kinpu beyond Mitakeshosenkyo, which is famous for its beautiful views. When it was first discovered, it was used as an ornament but by the middle of the Edo period (1600-1868), Shinto priests were taking the raw material to Kyoto to have them made into gems.
Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku started in the latter days of the Edo period, when master craftsmen were welcomed to the area and began polishing quartz on an iron sheet using a emery powder called kongousha made from a very hard stone, rather in the way that diamonds are polished.
Ornaments and items of jewelry are being produced today. Many of these pieces have been created to make the most of the distinctive features of the natural gem stone, meaning that no two items are alike.

Some horse leaders were passing along the riverbank of 上尾河 Aegogawa. One of the female attendants took off the bamboo basket from the horse and threw in into the river.
She said the Dragon Deity in the river might have wanted the crystal ball in the basket.

Once lightning struck quite close to a farmer's home in 嵯峨野 Sagano. An old woman hard of hearing but a wooden tub on the spot. The tub rumbled for a while and then became quiet.
When she took of the tub, there was something like a crystal ball inside, with fire glowing in it.
After that, the crystal ball became lighter and lighter with every thunder.

In the village 信濃国岩村田 Iwamurada a farmer was tilling the fields in Spring when he found a strange crystal, almost dark gray and black.
This is called "poop of the stars" in the local lore.
In this area, many meteors had fallen to the ground and these stones were part of their remains.

At the temple 甫陀林 near the pond 唐比の池 Karako no Ike there is a Kannon statue of crystal, about 3 cm high.
One day a person wanted to steal this statue. He went all the way to 小倉 Kokura with it and then felt he had to bring it back. On the way back, the statue fell on the ground once and got a scratch, but in time it healed and is now complete and beautiful again.

At the temple Zōjō-ji 増上寺 Zojo-Ji there lived 了学上人 Saint Ryogaku Shonin (1549 - 1634).
On the 15th day of the first lunar month in 1634 he recited 念仏 the Nenbutsu Prayers for a last time and died.
He was cremated and the bones were made into 舎利 numeral relics.
His crystal rosary, which sparkled in five colors, was also made into a relic.

北多摩郡吉祥寺村 Kita-Tama district, Kichijoji mura

It was a village along the beginning of the
. 五日市街道 Itsukaichi Kaido Highway. .
Itsukaichi-kaido was constructed in the early Edo Period as a route to transport charcoal produced in Akikawa valley to Edo.

Kichijōji Station
is served by the Chūō Line which go up to Tokyo central station just in 30 minutes, Sobu Line, Tozai Line and is also a terminus of the Keiō Inokashira Line, which takes passengers as far as Shibuya, another one of most fashionable shopping centers in Tokyo.
The area is one of the most popular areas for younger people to spend their weekend, because it features one of Tokyo's most varied and complete shopping areas, as well as the almost constantly crowded Inokashira Park together with its zoo. Supporting the fact of its popularity is that it's been voted to the number 1 place every year where people in Japan wish they would live since 1990s according to poll by a magazine.
- - - - - History
This town was named after the Kichijō-ji Temple which was located in Bunkyō City, Tokyo, before being destroyed by fire in the year 1657. This temple, in turn, derived its name from the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, corresponding to Kisshōten in Japan.
During the Great fire of Meireki,
the town in front of Suwazan Kichijō-ji Temple gate, Edo's Hongo Motomachi was destroyed by fire. Afterwards, based on town planning, the Shogunate rebuilt the area for Daimyō residences. Since the residents who used to live in front of Kichijo-ji gate had suffered great loss of residence and farm land, the shogunate's official reed lands named "Reno" and "Mureno" were provided as substitute land for them. Those hoping to apply were given a rice stipend and house construction loans with a 5 year limit. Kichijo-ji samurai, 佐藤定右衛門 Sato Sadaemon and 宮崎甚右衛門 Miyazaki Jinemon, in cooperation with local farmer 松井十郎左衛門 Matsui Jurozaemon, opened up the eastern district of present day Musashino and relocated the residents there.
Soon after,
with the opening of the 玉川上水 Tamagawa Aqueduct, the previously poorly watered uninhabited Musashino Plateau was cultivated, turning it into a vast farmland. In the process, the neatly partitioned thin rectangular shaped plots of land along Itsukaichi Kaidō (currently Tokyo Metropolitan Route 7, Suginami Akiruno Line) were formed. Some migrants were granted great lengths of land of more than 1000 meters long in the land area extending from Itsukaichi Kaidō to the Tamagawa Aqueduct, up to where the 千川上水 Senkawa Aqueduct divides. But the soil was not particularly fertile, so all of the farmland became dry soil fields, with no wet rice fields. Because of the residents who still had attachment to the former Kichijo-ji,
the new fields were named Kichijōji Village. .....

Around 1675, in Kichijomura in the South of Kyoto, the statue of 吉祥天女 Kichijoten was open for public viewing.
Many people from the nearby villages came, chanting the 六斎念仏 Rokusai Nenbutsu prayer. They made a lot of noise with their prayer gongs and prayer drums. Suddenly a huge monster animal came out and run away to hide under the veranda of a village house. They managed to catch it.
If had the face of a tanuki 狸 badger and was black from the nose to the top of the front. The neck was white, the back was black and the stomach was white. Its buttocks looked like a tokkuri 徳利 sake container. It had no tail and looked more like a mole. Its back legs were long like that of a dog.
For its food it would only eat 串柿 dried persimmons on a stick.

The toothpicks for the third Shogun Iemitsu have been made from its branches.

The Hall was located east of the Shrine Tomioka Hachimangu, present day 江東区富岡二丁目 Koto ward, Tomioka second sub-district.
The main statue was a 千手観音 Kannon Bosatsu with 1000 arms.

The Sanjusan Gendo Hall in Kyoto is quite famous for its contest of shooting with bow and arrow. The length of the shooting range in front of the hall was about 118 m.

In 1642, 弓師備後 the Bow Master Bingo had been living in Asakusa on land given to him by the Edo Bakufu government. He then built a similar large hall than the one in Kyoto.
On orders of 将軍徳川家光 Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu the Hatamoto
吉田久馬助重信 Yoshida Shigenobu was allowed to perform izome 射初め, the ritual of the First Shot.
In 1698 the Hall was lost in a fire.
In 1701, it was re-built in the East of Tomioka Hachimangu.
In 1827, the Hall was demolished.
In the Edo period, the Shrine 矢崎稲荷神社 Yazaki Inari Jinja had been build to protect the Hall.

Near the Sanjusan Gendo Hall in Fukagawa, there was an empty house where nobody had lived for a long time.
When someone finally moved in, he became very ill soon after. When the neighbours checked the house they felt a cold wind blowing through the rooms.
In the bedroom was an old pillow, which was maybe the originator of the wind and misfortune. So they burned the pillow. Out of the ashes came the smell of a human body burning.
After this ritual burning, the man was healed in no time.

On the day of the festival of 富岡八幡宮 Tomioka Hachimangu amother went there with her son of about 3 years. On the way they had to pass a large bridge, but the child only cried and never moved, so the mother went home.
Later she learned that the bridge had broken down on this day and more than 1000 people had died.
Now the mother knew that 神仏 the Gods and Buddhas had saved her and she cherished her child even more.

Buddhist Art and Amida Raigo Triads
This topic may seem a bit difficult, but try to follow as best you can. It's about a certain type of Buddhist statue. Actually this type of statue does not appear alone, but as a set of three: in the center is a Buddha called Amida, and on either side sits an Bodhisattva-attendant, one named Seishi and one named Kannon.
This set is called an Amida Raigo Triad.

We will talk about what raigo means later, but before we begin, take a look at this Amida Raigo Triad from a temple called Joshoko-ji, in the mountains north of Kyoto.

Buddhas are considered, like God, to be an Absolute existence and thus require no surrounding environment. Though Buddhas themselves need no enhancement, however, their followers, such as Buddhist angels or Bodhisattvas, sometimes are enriched with depictions of movement or surrounding atmosphere. Here too, however, we see the limitations of sculpture in depicting movement. On ancient Buddhist wall paintings, angels appear to be floating lightly through the heavens around the Buddha. But when these same kinds of angels were incorporated in sculpture and attached to the Buddha's halo, however, they lost their lightness and seemed to become more rigid. This is probably because of the innate differences between painting and sculpture.

The above may be one of the reasons that Japanese sculptors did not often try to incorporate surrounding environment into their sculptures. In the Heian Period, however, belief in the Pure Land spread, and people began to believe that after death they would be reborn in the Pure Land Paradise of Amida Buddha. As this belief spread, so too grew the desire to see expressions of the Pure Land in Buddhist sculpture. The result were images depicting Amida Buddha coming down from the far-off Pure Land Paradise to meet the souls of the dead and take them back with him to heaven. These images are called raigo, and usually had Amida in the center with an attendant on either side. This is the Amida Raigo Triad!

Scenes of this Amida Raigo Triad riding clouds, crossing mountains, and flying through the wind were easy to express through the medium of painting, but many difficulties arose when trying to express such scenes through sculpture, such as in the triad above. Why? Well, think about the nature of sculpture: it is impossible (or it was in those days) to create a sculpture that floats in mid-air. It is also difficult to express speed. To compensate, the sculptors of the Joshoko-ji triad tried to give the attendants a sense of tension and presence by depicting them leaning forward.

Towards the end of the Heian Period, perhaps reflecting changes in the society as a whole, artistic expression became more realistic, both in painting and sculpture. One area in which this can be seen is in the Raigo sculptures. The triad above from Joshoko-ji Temple is one of the earliest experiments in realism in a Raigo triad. Let's compare it with a painting of the same period.

What are the differences in the way this Bodhisattva-attendant is portrayed in painting and in sculpture? In the painting, the central triad and their surrounding Bodhisattva ride upon clouds, and cross mountains rich with autumn color as they gradually make their descent. On the other hand, though the sculpture does not show the autumn mountains over which the triad is crossing, it does show all three figures on clouds, and the two attendants crouched on their knees are leaning forward, giving them the same sense of speed and presence within an environment that we see in the painting.

Amida (Amitabha) Coming over the Mountain
The popular, Kamakura Period painting theme of "Amida Coming over the Mountain," usually shows the central image of Amida facing forward with both hands held over his breast. This pattern can be seen in the Zenrinji and Konkaikomyoji "Amida Coming over the Mountain" scrolls. In this scroll, however, Amida comes not over a mountain but across a valley, accompanied by six Bodhisattva attendants. He faces not forwards but to the left, with his right hand raised and his left hand down. Though this posture is atypical of "Amida Coming over the Mountain" paintings, it is common in other raigozu ("Decent of Amida Buddha" paintings). Since it contains no other narrative elements, such as the pious Buddhist on his deathbed awaiting Amida's salvation in the Chionin raigozu scroll, it can be categorized as a variation on the "Amida Coming over the Mountain" theme.
The composition of this work is well-balanced and its portrayal of the figures is elaborate and reverential. It can be counted among the representative Buddhist paintings of the Kamakura Period.

Raigo of Amida (Amitabha) and Twenty-five Attendants
This outstanding work depicts Amida (Amitabha) and twenty-five attendants as they descend on clouds over steep mountains down from Heaven. They are on their way to meet a dead person, depicted in the bottom-right, to accompany back to Heaven. This scene is known as "Rapid Descent," because of the especially swift appearance of the clouds. Flying clouds and the depiction of figures and garments in gold are characteristic of Buddhist paintings in the Late-Kamakura Period.
This scene depicts
jo-bon jo-sho (first class, upper birth), the highest state of death, evident from the dead person seated upright in front of a sutra scroll and the pagoda in the sky in the upper-right of the painting. The mountains in the background are high, but their smooth contour lines produce a gentle effect typical of the Yamato-e paintings. Though the scene depicted in this work is imaginary, its elements of landscape expression are impressive.

On the 26th day of the seventh lunar month, the moon in its last quarter looks almost like a boat and the local people see it like the 阿弥陀三尊 Triad of Amida, Seishi and Kannon.
To pray to the three, villagers climb to the temple on Mount Bonjusan and pray the whole night.

A young man once stayed over night at an old temple where monsters live. From below the Raigobashira pillar there came a monster, mumbling obosaru obosau オボサルオボサル, so he picked it up and carried it back home. Next morning he saw that it was a bag full of big and small gold coins.

In the district of 飯沼郷 Iinuma at the temple 弘経寺 Gugyo-Ji there was a priest well versed in religious discussions, but in fact it was a fox. Another priest wanted to expose this and told the fox/priest he would give him anything he wanted.
The fox said he wanted to see Amida. The real priest told the fox that he could see Amida, but he should not pray to it, since he would then die.
But when the apparition of Amida Raigo came down from heaven, the fox was overwhelmed and begun to pray. And there - he fell down dead immediately.

An old Tanuki had lived at the temple 茂林寺 Morin-Ji, taking care of the tea kettles. Once he fell asleep and his tail begun to show, so the priest now knew he was not a human and threw him out of the temple. To show his gratitude for the many years of his stay, the Tanuki showed the others an apparition of
釈迦来迎 Shaka Raigo, Shakyamuni coming down and died.
The priest then made a grave for the Tanuki and put the lid of the tea kettle on top of it.

武蔵野の無情の流れ荒川の
心の宿の皿沼不動


Saranuma (swamp like a plate) is located in the North-East of Arakawa and has been under the control of the Edo Bakufu Government.
The temple 東叡山寛永寺 was erected in 1625
as The Hieizan of the East
and the whole swamp was under its protection. Around it many other temples were soon built too.
The center of the cult was 阿弥陀仏 Amida Buddha and the 念仏講 Nenbutsu chanting.
With the greater popularity of Narita Fudo they got a statue of Fudo standing in front 御前立不動明王 for prayers.

Chiyogasaki district 千代ヶ崎 "Chiyo peninsula"
Meguro, 目黒区三田二丁目 Mita second district, 目黒一丁目 Meguro first district



In the Edo period, this district bordered to 三田 Mita, 上大崎 Kamiosaki, 中目黒 Nakameguro and 下目黒 Shimomeguro.

The name refers to an old story about Nitta Yoshioki and his concubine, 千代 Chiyo.
Yoshioki was killed in 1358.
When Chiyo heard of his death. she said
"If I die too, I will be able to be at his side for ever!" and drowned in the pond of the estate.
The villagers respected her death and called the pond now
Chiyo ga Ike 千代が池 Pond of Lady Chiyo.

Until about 1935, the pond was still there, but now we only have the print of Hiroshige to enjoy the view.


また、千代が崎には、こんなエピソードも残されている。「松平主殿頭の屋敷内に三基の異様な灯ろうがあった。この灯ろうは大正15年に大聖院(目黒区下目黒三丁目1番)に移されたのだが、それが十字の型をした切支丹灯ろうであることがわかり、この地が潜伏切支丹の遺跡ではないかと大騒ぎになった」のである。

Beside other famous spots in Meguro to watch Mount Fuji, this was one of them.
Other famous spots were
目黒元富士、目黒新富士、爺ヶ茶屋、夕日が丘.

People came here to enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring, the autumn moon and the snow in winter.
The estate of the 松平 Matsudaira clan and the 肥前島原藩 Shimabara han domaine were located here.
