YAKUSHI - Yamanaka Yakushi Gifu

It is also known as
mushifuuji no Yakushi 虫封じの薬師 "Yakushi warding off the three worms".

The old buildings were lost in fire and it was reconstructed by the Jodo sect in 1544.

Visitors and pilgrims come from all parts of Japan.
The main statue of Yakushi was carved by 行基 Gyoki.

It is also known for its medicine to heal wounds, the 狐膏薬 Fox Medicine.

The main lodging of Ochiai village is run by the 本陣井口家 Iguchi family.
It is said a traveller was told the secret of the medicine by the deity 秋葉大明神 Akiba Daimyojin.

中津川 Nakatsugawa was a postal station along the 中山道 Nakasendo Road. On the road toward Magome was the next station, the small hamlet of 落合 Ochiai.

ズイトンさんの狐膏薬 The legend of Zuiton san and the Fox Medicine

Once upon a time
there lived an old monk at the temple, called ズイトンさん Zuiton san.
Once he was working in the garden when a fox appeared who looked rather painful. When he picked him up, he saw a large thorn in the leg of the fox. Zuiton san pulled it out and the fox suddenly seemed to smile at Zuiton san. Then he walked back into the mountain forest.

A few evenings later
he heard a sound at the entrance door and when he opened he saw the fox. The fox wanted to show his gratitude by teaching Zuiton san how to make good medicine cream.

まず、マムシグサの根っこのまあるい奴をすり潰す。そこへオオバコの種とキツネノマゴの葉をすり潰して混ぜる。次はモーチを入れて良く練り合わせる。それと油を布切れに塗り付けて、痛いところに張れば、たちどころに痛みが取れます.

(Other versions talk about the fox appearing in the dream of Zuiton san, teaching him.)
Zuiton san made the cream as told and put some on his back, which always hurt him. And in no time his pain was healed. Zuiton san was overjoyed.

He put up a sign 御夢想狐こうやく (Fox Medicine given in a Dream) and began to sell it. The villagers came and soon buyers from other parts of Japan showed up in a never-ending row.

In a similar legend, a fox in the disguise of a running messenger 飛脚 taught how to make the medicine, then called

Ochiai-juku (落合宿 Ochiai-juku) was the forty-fourth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō.

It is located in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The honjin and the sub-honjin, as well as some old street lights, remain from the Edo period. The Honjin were the main rest areas in old post towns and very few remain today.
There are ten hills that must be traversed to get to Ochiai-juku from the preceding post town of Magome-juku.

岐阜県可児郡御嵩町御嵩１３７７－１ / Mitake town

Situated on the Western Side of 御嶽宿 Mitake-Juku of the old 中山道 Nakasendo road.
The temple was first built in 713.
In 815, 伝教大師（最澄） Dengyo Daishi Saicho dedicated the statue of Yakushi.
It is also closely related to the emperor Ichijoo Tennoo 一条天皇 Ichijo Tanno, when the annual festival 蟹薬師祭礼 started
The temple was lost to fire many times in its history, but usually rebuilt in greater splendor.
A special hall for the Yakushi Statue, 薬師如来の厨子堂, was built in 1610.

The foundation of Gankoji Temple
At the age of 36, Saicho visited China with Kukai (referred to as Kobo-taishi) as a member of Kentoshi (a mission represening Japan to China). On his return from China, he founded Enryakuji Temple (the headquarters of Tendai-shu, a faction of Buddhism) at Hieizan in north-eastern part of Kyoto. In order to carry out the Tendai-shu's tenet "relieve all the people", Saicho travelled all around Japan and finally reached Mitake via Tosando (an old passway connecting northern Japan and Kyoto). At that time the area surrounding Mitake was suffering from epidemic, so he built a fuseya, leaving a hand-made sculpture of Yakushi-Nyorai and said his prayer for the residents' recovery.

Building of Shichido-Garan
There was a very clever girl who was a daughter of Emperor Ichijyo. She boasted about her own ability but the Emperor was uncomfortable with her attitude and drove her out of Kyoto. She started travelling along the Tosando , but during her trip she became exhausted and much thinner than before. It was already winter when she arrived in Nakamura village (currently called Naka district in Mitake-cho) in her ragged clothes. She built an hermitage with the help of neighbors in the village and began to live there. She shaved her hair and became a nun named Gyouchini, praying for Yakushi-Nyorai every day.
At that time, a line of light began to appear every night from a pond at the foot from the mountain in the south of the village. Fierce wind blew, waves in the pond and a roar of mountain went accompanied the light. Gyouchi went close to the bank of the pond in the evening and found the pond had flooded and the entire village was under water with people almost drowned. Gyouchi counted her beads and kept praying, gazing the pond. Then an enormous 30-meter-long, big snake suddenly appeared and tried to swallow her.
Despite the snake's appearance, Gyouchi just kept praying for Yakushi Nyorai without any fear. After a while the wind and wave stopped, and a small 6-centimeters-long image of Buddha surrounded by small crabs appeared in front of her. Inspired by this development, Gyouchi said her prayer for the image and enshrined it in her hermitage. On hearing the whole story, the Emperor Ichijyo issued a permission to build a sanctum there. This led to the establishment of a magnificent Shichido-Garan style temple in 998 named "Oterasan-Gankoji".

Gankoji, burnt down twice by wars
Gankoji was burnt down in 1108 (the first year of Tenjin Era) during a rebellion led by Yoshitsugu Minamoto. At that time the image of Yakushi-Nyorai was moved to and enshrined at a shrine in Tsushima, Aichi Prefecture. After a while, the Yakushi-Do (a hall to enshrine Yakushi-Nyorai) was rebuilt in the premises of Gankoji. 100 years later, Koketsu Gengo Yasumori (in his capacity as Jito, an administrator of the Mitake area from the central government) re-constructed the rest of Gankoji. In 1572, in the midst of the battle between Takeda and Oda, a servant of Shingen Takeda set fire to Gankoji and burnt it down. As valuable images of Buddha and scriptures were kept ivied Gankoji, a number of monks of Gukeiji temple rushed into Gankoji and carried them out of the temple. Thanks to their work, all the images and 600 sets of scriptures remained intact. The images were kept in a temporary hall in the premises of Gukeiji for a while.

Shingen Takeda, an enthusiastic believer of Tendai-shu, expressed his strong anger with his staff for setting fire to the Gankoji. It is believed that he gave residents in Mitake area his promise to rebuild the temple. However, Shingen died before undertaking the restoration. 10 years later, led by Yojiro Tamaki, residents in the area began to rebuild Gankoji by themselves. Not only did they collect a fund from neighboring temples and shrines, but also brought wooden boards and pillars voluntarily. The restoration was completed in 1582 (the 9th year of Tensho Era).
One feature of the present hall is its wide corridors. This shows the residents' thoughtful consideration in order for travelers to avoid rain during the night. The other is that the humble style of the back of the hall compared to the front. It shows that the residents tried hard to rebuild the hall within their financial constraints.
In the concert on the 23rd November 2006 held during the event "Nakasendo Walk", Mr. Bincho Tanaka, a teacher of Gagaku both in Japan and all over the world played a whistle. In the concert which took place at Gankoji, some attendees would have felt eternal history as in the air the Emperor Ichijyo was known as an expert of whistle.

The origin of the Gankoji Festival 蟹薬師祭礼
The Gankoji Festival is originated in 999 (the 5th year of Chotoku Era), when the Shichido-Garan style temple was completed. Since then, ceremonies such as Daiji-Hyoshi, Shishi-mai and Hae-oi have been held part of the festival. Among them, Hae-oi was an important ceremony to drive off something unclean, given that could an epidemic, which was a matter of life and death at that time.
It is believed that the mask used in the Hae-oi ceremony was created by Gyouchi. There were two types of heads of Shishi (an item used in Shishi-mai lion-head ceremony), one was male and the other was female. When the male one was used, clothes and a mask for a male were used in the Hae-oi ceremony and vice versa.

This statue was dedicated to the temple by a medical doctor to pray for confining cancer. Both words of KANI in Japanese and cancer in astronomy in English share a common meaning, that is, crab. In view of such a relationship, the doctor wanted to have this statue created for dedication.

One of the three great temples in Sanbi, 三尾 in Kyoto, famous for their autumn colors.

Founded in the 8th century, this Shingon temple is located at Takao, northwest of Kyoto. Kukai, founder of the Shingon sect, came here in 809 and stayed for 14 years.

After the temple burnt down the monk Mongaku persuaded Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa and shogun Minamoto Yoritomo to rebuild it, the work being completed in 1184. However most of the temple buildings were destroyed again in the Onin War. Only the Daishido survived the war and several of the current buildings date from 1623.

Jingo-ji Temple is nestled in the mountainous area to the northwest of Kyoto city. The area is particularly known for autumn colored leaves and is called the Sanbi area consisting of three regions: Takao, Makio and Togano-o.
Jingo-ji Temple is located on the slope of Mount Takao. Crossing Takao Bridge above the Kiyotaki River 清滝川 and steeply ascending through the tunnel of crimson leaves. There, an incredibly beautiful Japanese temple welcomes one.
The official name of this temple is "Jingo Kokuso Shingon-ji" and it derives from two temples. One is Shingan-ji Temple and the other is Takaosan-ji Temple, both of which merged in 824. This is the place where Kukai (or Kobo Daishi) founded the base of his Shingon esoteric Buddhism and is regarded as one of the three most important esoteric Buddhist temples along with To-ji Temple and Kongobu-ji Temple.
It has experienced devastation many times in the long history but was successfully restored each time. A number of valuable temple treasures are preserved up to today, including the statue of Yakushi Nyorai (National Treasure) and other articles from the Heian and Kamakura periods. Another popular point about this temple is the Throwing Roof Tile. From the garden in Jizo-in Temple, people throw a roof tile over the cliff side as far as possible, an action that is believed to ward off misfortunes.

鎌倉時代の末に編纂された『神護寺略記』に引用されている『弘仁資財帳』に「薬師仏像一躯　脇士菩薩像二躯」とあるのがこの三尊に当たると思われる。
資財帳とは、定額寺で作ることを義務付けられていたもので、弘仁年間の資財帳とは当時定額寺であった神願寺のものであり、この像が神願寺から高雄山寺に移されたと考えられてきた。

近年、
この本尊を高雄山寺に由来するとする説が出され、その結論はまだ定まっていない。

Kumamoto, Aso Town 熊本県阿蘇市

One of the priests of the temple Jingo-Ji, where women were forbidden to come, got involved with a girl named オカメ O-Kame from nearby and spent almost every night with her.
The other monks punished the two by digging a hole in the ground, put the two of them inside and rolled a large boulder atop of this living grave.
From this time on in the villags around the home of O-Kame whenever a girl was born it would not grow up to become a woman. The villgers became afraid and asked the monks to pray to forgive O-Kame, whom they now called お上神様 O-Kame Kamisama.
They made a wooden statue clad with paper robes.
Whenever some difficult would happen in the village, the statue would shed off half of the paper robes as a warning of it.

The Onsen is located on a small hill, on its top is a sanctuary for Yakushi Nyorai.
At the bottom of the hill is the Konda Yakushi Onsen.

熊野市 Kumano
The samurai 小栗判官 Oguri Hangan had been given poison by his enemies and turned almost into a gaki 餓鬼 hungry demon. Yakushi Nyorai appeared in his dream and told him to go to Yunomine Hot Spring to be healed.

A long time ago,the Oguri clan built a castle in Hitachi (present-day Kyowa,Makabe-gun,Ibaraki).
According to "Kamakura Daizoshi",Oguri allied with Uesugi when Shuzen Uesugi rebelled some 600 years ago (1415) in Kanto,only to be defeated by Mochiuji Ashikaga.
Mitsushige, Lord of Oguri Castle,and his son Sukeshige (Hangan Oguri) fled for Migawa where the Oguri clan lived. While hiding in Sugami,Oguri was poisoned by thieves at Gongen-do Temple.

Healed by the Tsuboyu Waters of Yunomine

However, he was saved by a maiden named Terute 照手姫. He then fled to Fujisawa on an unbroken horse where he was aided by the Priest Yugyo. Later,Oguri became ill,but with the guidance of Yugyo and the sympathy of many including Terute,he made a pilgrimage to Kumano where the protection of Deities and the healing waters of Yunomine nursed him back to health.
Oguri was the 15th Lord of the Oguri Castle,but was ultimately killed in battle against Nariuji Ashikaga.
It is believed that a shrine maiden from Oguri's home country of Hitachi created the heroic epic to console the spirit of the ruined Oguri clan. From historical fact,the story became legend and was ultimately told time and time again.

田沢温泉湯源権現社の祭神。大昔，役の行者の夢枕に立って田沢温泉の在り場所を教えた。役行者は温泉開湯の時社を造って祀り，この温泉の守護神とした。常にこの温泉の危急を救い，今でも毎年八十八夜にお祭をする。

One of the indoor baths is pure onsen water but the temperature was so low, nobody was bathing in it. Instead, everyone was in the larger indoor bath which is heated and recirculated. The outdoor bath was spacious but would have been more enjoyable if it had a view of the Alps. The outdoor bath made of river rocks is only operating in the summer.

Yakushi no men 薬師の面 mask of Yakushi
To have the mask of Yakushi at the tempel 山田寺 Yamadadera laquered anew, the mask was sent to Kyoto to a certain craftsman. This man knew that things made from this tree would eventually make him a rich man, so he made a mask from a different wood and tried to sent it back.
But the mask became very angry about this, so he threw it into the sea and told it to find its way back to Yamadera in 八代 Yashiro. The mask landed at the beach of 温泉津 Yunotsu village. A child picked it up and began to dance with it, when the headman of Yashiro village saw her and took the mask home.
That night he had a dream when the makuragami 枕神 "god of the dream pillow", with the mask appeared by his bedside and told him to bring the mask back to the temple Yamadadera.

Kansai's strongest Therapeutic Hydrogen Carbonate Hot Spring Hanayama Onsen Yakushi no Yu is very close to Wakayama Interchange and its features are a high density of active elements and the reddish brown water of an iron carbonate onsen. Yakushi sama 薬師様 at 戸倉山 Togurayama (Togura-Yama)
At Togurayama there was a statue of Yakushi, and an old monk took care of it. But the the old monk died and Yakushi became very lonely. So he flew to the temple Hooonji 報恩寺 Hoon-Ji in 杉島 Sugishima hamlet to the large gingko tree いちょうの木.
When the priest came out the next morning, he saw a heavenly light shining from behind the gingko tree. He knew a deity had come down and worshipped the tree from now on.

The Yakushi Hall had been burned down by a fire and even the ground around it was burned. Only two heaps of dried grass had not burned. When the farmers took a closer look, they found the statue of Yakushi inside one of them. It seems the deity walked there all by itself.

Once upon a time
there lived a very wild and rough deity in the village and all had a hard time. But Yakushi managed to calm the deity down and had a Yakushi Hall build on top of the spot.
The villagers were still afraid of the wild deity. Sometimes the ground below the veranda of the temple rises to a mound, and whoever touches that spot will be cursed.

Once a man and a woman stayed over night in the temple. The woman had fallen down and uttered a divine oracle.
"The old priest here had once been the Lord of a castle in his former life. A young monk had killed the Lord. Therefore the relationship of the old and young priest here is quite un-normaland in discord. If they build a shrine for Inari, the Fox Deity, all will be well."
The two priests of the temple did as told and from then on there was peace among them.

松本市 Matsumoto

The Yakushi of 下金井 Shimokanai is said to be female and grant the wish for children. It also forgives いたずら all the bad deeds of children. But if grown-ups behave bad, they will feel her punishment.
Once there was a grown-up who scolded the children who threw mud ad the statue. That grown-up became ill soon afterwards.

Once the governor of Shinano, Minamoto no Shigeyuki 信濃の国司 - 源重之 (? - 1000) became an eye disease. He went to the hot spring 白糸温泉 Shiraito for healing and went to the nearby Yakushi temple every day. And indeed, his eyes were healed in good time. To thank Yakushi he had the temple rebuild a bit further down on the plain of Shimokanai.

Minamoto no Shigeyuki 源重之 (? - 1000)
an early Heian waka poet and nobleman.

He was designated a member of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals and one of his poems is included in the famous anthology Hyakunin Isshu. His remaining works include a poetry collection known as the Shigeyukishū (重之集).

The Onsen is located on a small hill, on its top is a sanctuary for Yakushi Nyorai.
At the bottom of the hill is the Konda Yakushi Onsen.

Kotaroo Yashiki 小太郎屋敷 The Home of the Kotaro Family

Once upon a time
in 根津村 Nezu village a certain 六部 Rokubu took a retreat 長命寺大日堂 in the Dainichi Hall of the temple Enmei-Ji, when many young cats gathered around him and begun chanting:
国分寺の「小太ばば」来なけりゃ踊りにゃならん
"If Koda Baba from Kokubun-Ji does not come here, we cyan't dance!"

After a while a huge monster cat (kaibyoo 怪猫) came down with a storm and begun a wild dance with the small kittens.
Rokubu hit the monster cat with his staff and she fled, splatting blood on the way.

Next day it became clear that the "monster cat" was in fact an old grandmother in the home of Kotaro in the hamlet next to Kokubun-Ji.
So Rokubu went to visit her and saw that the old hag had hurt her leg on the spot where he had hit the cat last night.

To save her soul Rokubu begun to pray to Yakushi Nyorai and in a short while the cat showed her true nature and fled to the mountain 尾野山 Onoyama.
When the family searched the house, they found the bones of an old woman hidden under the veranda.
To our day, there is a stone marker with the inscription Rokubu 「六部」 in the compound of Kokubun-Ji

The Cat Deity of Fukushima 福島県の猫神

伊達市梁川町山舟生字鍛治屋場 / Kajiyaba Yanagawamachi Yamafunyū Date-shi, Fukushima

The local people call this hall 日面薬師堂 Hizura Yakushi Do, since it is located at the border between the hamlets of Kajiyaba and Hizura.
It is situated on a hill with stone steps leading up in the compound.
The hall has been founded in 1639.

There is also a statue of Jizo Bosatsu from 1997 in the compound -
「南無富多卦佐地蔵尊」平成九年 (1997).

On the way up to the hall there are many stone markers and statues.
One of them is the Cat Deity.

Koyama no Neko Yakushi 湖山の猫薬師 Yakushi the Cat from Koyama

Once upon a time
there was a Yakushi Do Hall dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai in the village of 賀露（かろ）町 Karo-Cho, which had been build by 伏野長者 the rich Village Elder Fushino of Koyama 湖山長者.
He lived comfortable with many servants and one cat, well beloved by him and the maid servants. Fushino had taught his cat how to say prayers and live a benevolent life.
But his wife did not like cats at all.
(The story about the cat continues below.)

When Fushino died, there was nobody to say prayers and venerate at the Yakushi Hall any more. It declined rapidly.
Then one night, the villagers saw a strong light at the top of Mount Koyama 湖山. This happened for many nights in a row, so the villagers went up to the mountain top and there they found the statue of a Buddha sitting under a pine tree.

"If a Buddha is sitting here, it must be a blessed place for rituals. Let us take the statue back home to venerate it."
The young folks of the village brought it downhill and all villagers could pray to it now.
Then someone realized what had happened:

"This is the Yakushi Nyorai of Karo village. He must have felt homesick for Mount Koyama and come back to sit there!"
So they hurried to built a small hall for the statue and found a priest named 浄西坊 Kiyonishi Bo for the daily duties.

One day when priest Kiyonishi was saying his daily prayers he saw a light shining from under the statue. When he stretched out his arm to touch in, it was the mummy of a cat with red hair and its eyes where still shining.

That night he had a dream and a cat talked to him:
"I am the cat of the rich village elder Fushino of Mount Koyama.
But his wife did not approve of my living in their home and I was kicked out.
I lived in 因幡山 Mount Inabayma for a while. One maid servant of Fushino once came to search for me and we had a talk, but I stayed on. As a present, I gave a white envelope to the maid servant.
When the maid opened the envelope back home, there was a painting of a dog inside, and 10 large pieces of gold.

Fushino's wife was surprized, but soon had a plan.
"If the maid got 10 pieces of gold, I am sure they will give 100 to me, the Lady of the House" and off she went to Inabayama.
She stayed there over night, but when she opened the sliding door just a bit to have a peek into the other room, she saw a huge white cat, just ready to jump at her.
The lady was too afraid and could not move in her shock.
At this moment the cat that had lived in her home turned up too and said:
"Remember, you have always been so mean to me. Now I get my revenge!"
and the cat jumped to the throat of the woman and bit her to death.

(Now the legend goes back to Yakushi san and the story the cat told in the dream.)

One day I was walking near the fields when the area suddenly flooded and became a pond and me, not able to swim, was swept right into the middle of the new pond (Koyama Ike 湖山池), getting weaker and weaker as I struggled to stay above water. Finally I died.
My body stayed there and eventually became a small island, 猫島 Nekojima, "Cat Island".
The Village Elder had taken good care of me while I was still alive.
So when I died I did not leave this world, became a mummy and now are back to help others!"

Just then Kiyonishi woke up from his dream.
He remembered that a cat with red hair had come to his place to live here about 5 or 6 years ago. This cat used to put its paws together like a human being in prayer. This must have been the cat from the Village Elder, now become a mummy.

When he had reasoned so far, Kiyonishi jumped out of his bed, took the mummy of the cat, placed it in a small sanctuary and placed it at the right side of Yakushi Nyorai in his temple.

Since then, Yakushi from Koyama has been called "猫薬師 Neko Yakushi" "Yakushi the Cat".
And of course, in the temple hall there are no mice at all.

Farmers come here to get a special amulet that will keep the mice out of their homes and rice storage.
If something is lost and people come here with a prayer sincerely to find it, indeed, it will soon be found.

Koyama Pond Area

The Koyama Pond is located 6 kilometers west of central Tottori City in eastern Tottori, close to Tottori Airport. It was an inlet of the Sea of Japan, but became a closed lagoon when deposits from the Sendai River separated it from the sea. There are seven islets in the pond, and the largest, Aoshima, has a park with a well-equipped promenade and camping ground.

This pond, being 4 kilometers long from east to west and 2.4 kilometers wide from north to south, is almost a lake in size and is a sanctuary for eels, carp and other freshwater fish. They still practice a traditional style of fishing there, called "Ishigama-ryo," where fishers form a trap with large rocks and wait for the fish to enter.

Yakushigama, Yakushi no Kama　薬師窯 Yakushi Kiln

Wishing a Happy New Year 2014!

The name of this kiln dates back to a legend of Gyoki Bosatsu, who had built a small sanctuary for Yakushi Nyorai 薬師如来の祠, which was in the compound of Chugai Toen Company till the end of the Edo period.

It was said to be able to cure eye disease and removed to the temple Hoosenji 宝泉寺 Hozen-Ji, where to our day there is a festival in honor of Yakushi Nyorai, O-Yakushi San 「お薬師さん」 in November (from 8 to 12).

Since its founding the Yakushi Kiln has been protected by Yakushi san and has been able to produce many items that make people happy and feel well. Some are amulets to prevent eye disease.
