Hinokami Inari 火の神稲荷

. tanuki 狸 - mujina 狢 － racoon dog, badger legends .
After the great fire in 1915, the priest from the Shrine 熊野神社 Kumano Jinja said it was the curse of a Tanuki.
If they would venerate the Tanuki as the 稲荷神 Inari Deity, there would be protection from fire.
So the people venerated it as 八王稲荷大明神 Hachio Inari Daimyojin.
People come here to pray for protection and fire prevention to our day.


The Shrine is located at - Ichinohashi-Miyanouchicho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto.

Hinokami Inari 火の神稲荷 Inari the Fire Deity
In the year 1907, a bunke 分家 branch family separated from the honke 本家 main family. They got 屋敷神稲荷 a Inari Deity to protect them and it became their Yashikigami .
They believe that they did not have any damage from a fire since is the power of this deity.

When they wanted to built a new road, they had to fill up the well and relocate the statue of 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu.

At the temple 成高寺 Joko-Ji in Utsunomiya there came shugenja 修験者 a mountain priest (the local Tengu) to the priest 祥貞和尚 Shotei and asked to give him his hand.
"Without my hand I will be in big trouble", the priest refused but the man said he would bring it back. They agreed on this. Since that day his hand did not grow any more.
One month later the mountain priest came back and brought him a dooin 銅印 bronze stamp with the letters for 火防 fire prevention as a thank-you present.

Once upon a time, 穴沢善右衛門 Anazawa Zenemon spent the night in his mountain hut. A huge cat shape-shifted to an old woman and wanted to come in, but he saw the spook and refused.
The next day when he came home, he found his wife bound to a tree and her teeth torn out.
There was a kikori 樵夫 woodcutter nearby, but that was the husband of the monster cat.
To get his revenge, Zenemon said he had killed his wife, made the cat eat her bones and left.
Next he took some companions, went into the cave where the monster cat lived and killed it.

Once 化猫 a monster cat came to the temple 華蔵院 Kezo-In and made things wet. It took the prayer clappers and made music for the other beasts to dance.

The monster cat was wearing the robes of the priest and he found them all wet next morning.

Once the cat was taking a nap in the daytime in this valley when a nearby volcano erupted and the cat burned in the flames and flew down with the rocks.
The villagers were glad it was over now, took some of the rocks and built a nekozuka 猫塚 cat mound to appease its soul.

Once upon a time, Kobo Daishi passed here and banned a bakeneko 化け猫 cat monster to become a stone.

In the North of Mount Nekomadake there is a huge boulder, Nekoishi 猫石, as big as one tatami mat.
In former times, there lived the nekomata ねこまた monster cat, who used to eat humans passing its way.
There is almost no grass or weed growing there, because the cat had scratched it all off.

The temple was established in 940 to commemorate the victory of the forces dispatched from the Heian capital to suppress a revolt by the powerful Kantō region samurai, Taira no Masakado.

The part from Shinjuku to Sakura was often used by officials of the Edo Bakufu government and also called
Sakura Kaido 佐倉街道 Sakura Highway.
Daimyo from Sakura and along the Boso Peninsula (Chiba) used it for Sankin Kotai.

There was 行徳船 a boat connection from Gyotoku to Narita, to transport salt and in the late Edo period even sometimes passengers.

The name of Shisui in the Japanese language is formed from three kanji characters. The first, 酒, means "sake",
The second, 々, is an ideographic iteration mark, indicating a repetition of the first character, and the third, 井 means "well".
The area in present-day Shisui was noted for its freshwater springs, and a local legend arose that pure sake gushed freely from the ground, creating "wells of sake".

The area around Shisui has been inhabited since at least the Japanese Paleolithic, and archaeologists have found stone tools and the foundations of houses dating 24,000 years ago. During the Muromachi period, the area was under control of the Chiba clan. After the start of the Edo period, much of the area of Shisui was part of Sakura Domain, a feudal domain under the Tokugawa shogunate.
After the Meiji Restoration, Shisui Town was founded on April 1, 1889 within Inba District of Chiba Prefecture. Proposals to merge Shisui with the neighboring city of Sakura failed to pass a public referendum in 2002.

- related to giving birth and . Ubusunagami 産土神 deity of one's birth place . :
On the 21st day after birth, the baby was presented to the Ubusunagami. The monther pinched its nose to make it cry on the way and if it did, the child would grow up safely.
On day 100 after birth the baby was given its first food, and to pray for strong teeth the baby was given a stone to lick.

If the Kadomatsu was put up on the 29th day of december, it was called
kumatsu 苦まつ pine of pain
If it was put up on the 31st day of december, it was called
ichiya matsu 一夜松 pine put up over night.
These two days had to be avoided.
The Kadomatsu should not feel the wind of the seventh day of January, and had to be put down on January 6. Sometimes people did it on day 7, but in the early morning of day 5 or 7.

- - - related to hot water:
To put water into it to make it cooler was ok. But it would bring bad luck to put hot water into cold one.
Carrying hot water for hakamairi 墓参り, when visiting the graves of the ancestors must be used and not taken back home.
- - - related to weddings:
Pouring soup or tea over sekihan 赤飯 red auspicious rice, it would bring rain on the wedding day.
- related to fire:
Throwing yuzu 柚子 citrons under the veranda would cause fire.
Pouring clear water into a tokkuri 徳利 Sake flask and place it near the daikokubashira 大黒柱 main pillar of the home would prevent fire.
- - - related to graves
Take off the joint of a bamboo stick and put it on the grave, bottom side up. This way the spirit can escape through the hole. When visiting the grave, pour water through the bamboo pipe.
The soul can hear the sound and rejoice or even relieve its thirst.

Zenkai 禅海 Priest Zenkai
(?1691 / ?1687 - 1774)
A priest of the 曹洞宗 Soto Zen Sect.
He was the child of 越後国高田藩士 the Lord Takada from Echigo.
His boyhood name was 福原市九郎 Fukuhara Ichikuro.
His full priest name was 真如庵禅海　Shinnyo-An Zenkai.
He became a priest after both his parents had died. He left home and walked around the country.
In 1715 he took the name of Zenkai.
He is known for digging a tunnel in Oita, the Aonodomon in the gorge 耶馬渓 Yabakei.
He stayed at the temple 羅漢寺 Rakan-Ji in Bungo, when he learned about the dangerous route along 青野渡 Aonodo, where people and horses often lost their lives.
He begun to dig a tunnel for a safer passage in this area around 1730, with the permission of
豊前国中津藩主 the Lord of the Nakatsu Domain in Bungo.
With the help of local villagers and other Daimyo from Kyushu the work was completed within about 30 years.

Once it was finished, the villagers took money from the people who used the tunnel, it was the first toll road in Japan.

Aonodōmon (青の洞門 meaning "blue tunnel")
is a tourist attraction located in the gorge of Yabakei, now part of Nakatsu City, in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Legend has it that before the tunnel was built, people had to climb over the cliffs through which the tunnel is built to reach an important local shrine. The path was very dangerous and people regularly fell to their deaths.
During the Edo period, a Buddhist monk named Zenkai, who had committed a murder in his earlier life, decided to build a safe passage for worshipers in order to atone for his crime. Beginning at the age of 49, he dedicated 30 years of his life to digging the 185 metre tunnel by hand, using only a hammer and chisel.

The gorge of Yabakei (耶馬渓)
is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty spanning the municipalities of Kusu and Nakatsu in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Located within Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, it was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan during the Shōwa era. Yabakei was formerly the name of a town, but was merged into Nakatsu Municipality in 2005. 　According to Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, official confirmed report, in despite the absence of rain, suddenly landslides occurred on the mountain slope, three houses were buried in the place and six person were lives on 11 April 2018.

When 禅海上人 Saint Zenkai arrived near 糸崎浦 Itoizaki inlay on kame 亀 a turtle, the villagers saw a strange light on the sea. When they pulled it out, it was a statue of 観音 Kannon Bosatsu, so they placed the statue in the local temple.

Near the Yabakei gorge lived a woman who always prayed piously to 観音 Kannon Bosatsu.

Maybe thel priest of the temple made up this story to attract more people . . . anyway . . .

. Inari 稲荷と伝説 Legends about the Inari Fox Deity .

高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune Fox at the temple 長寿寺 Choju-Ji
The priest 高蔵坊 Takakura Bo of temple Choju-Ji wanted to build a new main hall. The 老狐 old fox who lived in the temple compound wanted to help. He shape-shifted into priest Takakura and begun preaching at crossroads and along the highways:
"I am the priest of the temple Choju-Ji. The Kannon statue of our temple is especially powerful and grants wishes ... "
Many people heard this and came to visit the temple, giving money offerings and the hall could finally be built.
People called the old fox now 高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune and when he died he was venerated as the deity 高蔵坊稲荷 Takakura-Bo Inari.

A Tanuki named Tateishi lived along the highway and often shape-shifted into humans or played tricks on them.
One day a female fish peddler came along. She wanted to cross a river and lifted her skirt to pass through the water. But for some reason she could not cross it. When other people called her, she realized she was standing in a field and all the fish of her basket had gone.

The husband of 白石サカヨ Shiraishi Sakayo was carrying fish from the port of 平潟港 Hiragata. After passing a bridge and a mountain pass, he came to the 街道 Kaido highway. Just there a fox usually appeared and insulted him. The man then shouted:
"I will give one fish to 乙姫 Princess Otohime down the river!" and threw one piece of maguro 鰹 tuna fish down the valley.
If he did this, the fox would leave him in peace.
Another man who heard this story put on a white tenugui 手拭い hand towel to look like a woman, went down the river and got the tuna fish.

West of the swamp 化女沼 Kejonuma lived a rich person. He had a beautiful daughter and the rich lord of a manor wanted her as his wife. He refused, but he was punished and had to leave the village, so he went to 最上 Mogami. The servants stood by the highway roadside as he passed. His daughter took a purse with money and jumped into the swamp. All the fish in the swamp went with her and swam to Mogami, where there is now a small pond. She had some red lacquer plates which she could not take. They are still in the swamp and if horses walk nearby, their hooves may turn red from the lacquer.

Kejyonuma Dam (Japanese: 化女沼ダム) is an earthen dam in the city of Ōsaki, Miyagi Prefecture, completed in 1995.
The dam crosses the Tajiri River, a branch of the Kitakami River and utilises the basin of a pre-existing natural lake.

Once the kannushi 神主 priest from 七村 Nanamura was accompanied by a wolf on his way home, but the animal suddenly bit into his sleeve and since he could not get rid of it, he was taken to the top of the mountain. The wolf dug a hole there and stuffed the priest inside to hide him.
A short while later a thousand wild wolves passed the highway in a parade.
Thus the kind wolf had saved the priest.

Kitchomu, Kicchomu 吉四六 - Hirota Kichiemon 廣田吉右衛門
(? - 1715)

Kitchomu is a hero in many parts of Southern Oita.
His real name was Hirota Kichiemon, who was born in 臼杵市野津町 Usuki, Notsu town.
He was the headman of the village and allowed to wear a sword in his belt and use a surname.
He was quite a tonchi とんち者 quick-witted person.

His name is also used for local rice wine, see below.

吉四六の名前は大分に伝わる古い民話の主人公から名づけられました。
壺の文字はすべて職人による手書きで、1つとして同じものは存在しません。

Once upon a time, there was a very pleasant man called Kicchomu-san.
In Kicchomu-san's village, there was an orphan named Naokichi.
Naokichi's mother passed away from disease, and his father was a harpooner on a whaler, but one day he got caught in a storm and drown in the sea with the ship.
Therefore leaving his seaside home village since he was little, Naokichi was fostered by his uncle who lived Kicchomu-san's village.
However, there was not a single day when Naokichi forgot the sea.
I will get on a whaler and be a good harpooner like Dad!
Naokichi was always thinking so.
And then, when he became 11 years old, Naokichi let his uncle know his resolution, and it had been decided that he will return to the village where he was born.
Having heard about Naokichi, all the people of the village came to say farewell to him with the gift.
"That's the boy, Naokichi. You are your father's son."
"You must be a good harpooner."
While everyone unanimously encouraged Naokichi, one youth named Sampei said to him,
"Hey, Naokichi. Everyone irresponsibly praises you a lot, but it's not exactly admirable to be a harpooner on a whaler."
Naokichi asked Sampei in surprise.
"What do you mean, Sampei-san?"
"I've heard your father drowned in the sea. I mean, I thought it might bring you bad luck if you work on the unlucky sea where your parent died."
Silence.
All the people had been pleased until while ago, but Sampei's words pulled them in dead silence,
and Naokichi was about to burst into tears for the sudden unpleasant subject.
Kicchomu-san was listening to Sampei at the back, but came forward and asked him.
"Sampei, I have something to ask you. Where has your father died?"
"Unlike Naokichi's father, he has fortunately and surely died in his bed at our home."
"Uh-huh, so how about your grandfather?"
"So has Grandpa. He has not drowned in the sea like Naokichi's father."
Kitcchomu-san grinned to hear that.
"Then, Sampei, it makes no sense that you are against Naokichi going to sea."
"What?"
"Don't you think so? You say the place where a parent has died is unlucky, but as for your house, not only your father but also your grandfather has died, right?"
"That's…right, but—."
Sampei as he was, he didn't know how to answer.
Then the village headman beside Naokichi pat on his shoulder and said,
"Be a good harpooner, Naokichi."
"Yes, I will do my best!"
Thus, seen off by everyone, Naokichi briskly left the village.

Gaataroo ガータロ Gataro, the Kappa
Many children, who played in the river, died and people thought it must be the act of Gataro.
The strong Kitchomu came along, pulled down his pants and stuck his butt into the river to invite the Kappa.
When the Kappe grabbed his butt, he grabbed the Kappa instead.
Now the Kappa had to promise to become the protector of the local children, the villagers even made a song about this happening.
