Fukui is famous for the
makerel road (saba kaidoo　鯖街道、さばかいどう- saba kaido) transporting fish to Kyoto.
Therefore many simple makerel dishes have been prepared in busy fishing times.
The road leads from the port of Obama at the Bay of Wakasa to Kyoto, about 75 kilometers. The fish was salted and packed in Obama and then carried over night to the city. It was then just rightly marinated and folks waited in line to buy it.
Other routes for transporting saba are also known. Many farmers exchanged their newly harvested rice to get some fish for the autumnal autumn festival and their Saba Sushi.

Obama was also the endpoint of many ships from Asia trying to reach Japan during its long history. So embassies and their presents for the emperor and aristocrats in Kyoto also travelled along this road, the final step of any "Silk Road" through Asia or via the ocean.

The province of Wakasa was situated along the Sea of Japan's coastline in what is now Fukui Prefecture. It was referred to as miketsukuni (a region that produced food offerings for the Imperial Court) and played an important role in providing foodstuffs such as sea salt,mackerel, and other marine products to the ancient, landlocked capital of Nara and Kyoto. Wakasa's role as a source of supplying the foodstuffs led to the development of a unique culinary culture. This ultimately resulted in distinct cultures and customs evolving in the different villages and hamlets. The ancient thoroughfare is now called the saba-kaido (Mackerel Road) and here visitors can experience nature, eat delicious traditional foods, attend festivals, as well as view traditional houses and roads that hearken back to the earlier days of great prosperity. ...

Several highways which have been referred to as "Saba-kaido" in recent years connecting Wakasa Province and Kyoto played an important role not only in supplying foodstuffs but also in exchanging various goods, people, and culture. "Saba-kaido" refers to a highway supplying marine products and fish such as mackerel called "saba" in Japanese to the Imperial family and Imperial court in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Cultural exchange initiated by the connection with the Imperial Court and the aristocracy in Nara and Kyoto permeated the entire civilian life both in rural farming areas and fishing villages in Wakasa Province through the interaction of people taking these Saba-kaido highways and developed into rich cultural heritages such as old temples and shrines, unique streetscapes, folk cultural assets along Saba-kadio highways of Wakasa region whose rich and diverse cultural aspects can hardly be found elsewhere in Japan.

Salted guji has been carried to Kyoto via the Mackerel Road (saba kaidoo) together with mackerels. In the Bay of Wakasa, cold and warm currents meet and is is a rough terrain for fish, so they are fatty.

A legend from Shinjuku and Nakano ward 新宿区，中野区

daija no hone 大蛇の骨 bones of a huge serpent
At the temple 円照寺 Ensho-Ji in Shinjuku and 豊仙寺 / 宝仙寺 Hosen-Ji in Nakano there are parts of the bones of one huge serpent kept as secret treasures.
River water can be poured over the bones for an oracle about coming rain.
At the temple Hosen-Ji the waster from the well 井の頭 Inokashira is used for offerings.

Ochiai no Kappa 落合の河童 The Kappa from Ochiai
In 1571, there was a great famine in Edo. From spring to July it was only raining and everything was overflown.
In 落合村の下落合 the village of Ochiai in Shimo-Ochiai there was a mountain priest named 佐貫坊 Sanuki Bo, who had caught a Kappa. This Kappa had fallen in love with a 人魚 "human fish".
Sanuki Bo promised the Kappa that his love would be fulfilled, if he would stop the rain and flooding.
Thus he saved the area.

Once a man fled from the Great Fire at Meguro Gyoninzaka and in Ichigaya Sanaizaka he found a woman crying.
She had fled her home because of the fire, so he brought her back and she said she would give him something to eat. All of a sudden he fell asleep.
When he woke up, the woman was also sleeping, but he saw hair around her mouth and thought she looked like an old Tanuki. It was a male badger with his larte testicles hanging out showing burns. He tried to kill the Tanuki, but he woke up and run away as fast as he could.

Yonbangai 四番街 / 四番町 Yonbancho "fourth district"

In a small alley in Yonbangai there was the estate of 織田屋敷 the Oda clan. The living quarters in the storehouse suddenly collapsed and people say it was the doing of chiyo 地妖 an earth monster.

. datsueba 奪衣婆 / ダツエバ the Hag of Hell .
She sits near the river crossing to Hell and takes the cloths of people who can not pay properly for the crossing.
On a cold evening
a begger came to the Buddha Hall where a statue of Datsueba was kept and stole a cushion to sleep warm in a different place.
In his dream, Datsueba appeared and said "The cushion you stole must be quite warm!"
The beggar woke up, regretted his deed and brought the cushion back the next day.

Once a child was hit by a car, but did not have and injuries.
On another day, a car bumped right into a restaurant, but there were no people and nobody got hurt.
People say that Koshin Sama is protecting this area.

Once a stingy chooja 長者 very rich man buried his gold and silver in a lonely field and then killed the servant who had helped him.
He threw the dead body from a bridge into the nearby river.
This bridge is therefore called 姿不見橋（すがたみず）Sugatamizubashi or 橋や俤橋（おもかげ）Omokagebashi.
When his daughter found out about this, she turend into a serpent.
The rich man changed his attitude and died peacefully later on.

Once a traveler had taken a prostitute to a lodging.
She begun to lick the oil of the lamp all night and he thought she must be a cat monster.
But she then told him she had hurt her tongue and tried to heal the wound with oil.

Shubi no Matsu 首尾の松 "Pine of Success"

About 100 meters (about 330 ft.) down the Sumida River from this monument, on the riverbank, there used to be the famous Matsu tree Shubi no Matsu. (pine tree of success).
The origin of the name of the pine tree Shubi is not exactly clear but here are some explanations:
- 1.
It was named because a man, a shogun's retainer, 'successfully' rode a horse across the flooded Sumida River from the pine tree to the other bank in the presence of the third shogun, Iemitsu.
- 2.
Men of the world talked together under this pine tree about their 'Shubi (success)' at Yoshiwara when they crossed the Sumida river.
- 3.
Laver (edible seaweed) used to be harvested here using ひび 'hibi' (long sticks to collect laver) stuck in the river, and the pronunciation of 'hibi' was corrupted into 'shubi.'

The first 'Shubi no Matsu'
was blown down during the An'ei era (1772-1780), its successor died during the Ansei era (1854-1859), the third pine died at the end of the Meiji era (around 1910), and their successors were entirely destroyed by the fires of the Kanto Great Earthquake of 1923 and the Second World War. In December, 1962, members of Asakusa-nanbu Association of Commerce, Industry and Tourism regretted the loss of these pines and built a monument close to this bridge in cooperation with the local people.
The present pine monument is said to be the seventh tree.

The Japanese romantic roads are named after the famous Romantische Straße in Germany:
The Romantic Road
is a "theme route" devised by promotion-minded travel agents in the 1950s. It describes the 350 kilometres (220 mi) of surface roads between Würzburg and Füssen in southern Germany, specifically in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, linking a number of picturesque towns and castles. In medieval times, it was a trade route that connected the center of Germany with the south. Today, this region is thought by many international travellers to possess "quintessentially German" scenery and culture, in towns and cities such as Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber and in castles such as Burg Harburg and the famous Neuschwanstein.

EDo - ichirizuka milestone mound

Ichirizuka (一里塚) are historic Japanese distance markers akin to milestones. Comprising a pair of earthen mounds (tsuka or zuka) covered in trees and flanking the road, they denoted the distance in ri (3.927 kilometres (2.440 mi)) to Nihonbashi, the "Bridge of Japan", erected in Edo in 1603.
Ichirizuka were encountered and described by Engelbert Kaempfer, c.1690:
"serving as a milestone are two hills, facing each other, which are raised up on both sides of the road, and planted with one or more trees."

The Tokugawa shogunate established ichirizuka on the major roads in 1604, enabling calculation both of distance travelled and of the charge for transportation by kago or palanquin. These mounds, to be maintained by "post stations and local villages", were one component of the developing road infrastructure, which also included bridges and ferries; post stations (both shukuba, and the more informal ai no shuku); and tea-houses (chaya). However, the main aim was "official mobility, not recreational travelling": the movement of farmers and women was discouraged, and a system of passports and barriers (関所) maintained. By marking the distance from Edo rather than Kyoto,
establishing a symbolic point of origin for all movements, the Tokugawa made of mile markers what they would later make of checkpoints: powerful reminders of the government's geopolitical ubiquity and efficacious tools in its appropriation of space.
Ichirizuka were important enough to be found on the well-known "Proportional Map of the Tokaido" by printmaker Hishikawa Moronobu (d. 1694).
A traditional poem allegorically compares the ichirizuka that mark distance to the Kadomatsu marking the years of a person's life. (see below)

Near the Ichirizuka mound beside the Jizo statue, there was a popular song during 天保の飢饉 the great famine of Tenpo (1832).
"Don't cry, don't make so much noise.
Just wait until autumn.
Then there will be enough rice to eat.

「泣くな騒ぐな秋まで待てよ、百に三升の米かせる」

Parents chanted this when the children would cry at night (yonaki).
They would make a wish and cast a straw rope around the statue of Jizo.
When their wish was fulfilled, they offered a red hood for Jizo.

EDO - Kakigaracho Kamimakicho Chuo

In the Edo period, it was a place where the fishermen dried their nets and many oyster shells were lying on the ground.

In former times the area was part of 人形町 Ningyocho.
In 1878, three sub-districts of Kakigaracho were established.
In 1876, the beikoku torihikijo 米穀取引所 trade center for grain dealers was located here and together with 堂島 Dojima in Osaka it was the main trade center for rice dealers.
In 1939, all these centers in Japan were abolished.
On the remaining ground of this center a new trade center for grains was built, 東京穀物商品取引所.
In 2011, this center was closed and the atmosphere of the area has changed a lot.

Kamimakichoo 上槇町 Kamimakicho, Upper Kamimaki district
Chuo ward, Kami-Makicho. Now, 中央区八重洲一丁目、日本橋三丁目 Yaesu first sub-district and Nihonbashi third sub-district

The word maki can refere to various kinds of trees of the family Podocarpaceae. This may be Podocarpus macrophyllus.

The district was abolished in 1928. It had a first and second sub-district.
It used to face the 入堀 Iribori moat.
Around 1700 half of its Western area was landfilled and the new space was called
中橋広小路 Nakabashi Hirokoji, Hirokoji for short.
Around 槇町 Makicho were other areas with this name, like 下槇町 Shimo-Makicho, 南槇町 Minami-Makicho, 北槇町 Kita-Mackicho and 冨槇町 Tomi-Makicho.
It might have been a place where lumber from the Maki tree was placed.

There lived also a lot of ishiku 石工 stone masons in the area, making gorintoo 五輪塔 stone pagodas. The area was therefore also called
Gorinchoo 五輪町 Gorincho district.

In 1868, it became part of the new Tokyo and in 1869, parts of 檜物町会所屋敷 Himonocho and 上槇町新道会所屋敷 Kamimakicho were merged.
In 1878, it became part of Nihonbashi.
In 1928, the name was abolished.

Shimomakichoo 下槇町 Shimomakicho, Lower Shimomaki district
The district was abolished in 1928. It had a first and second sub-district.
Now it is 中央区日本橋三丁目 Nihonbashi third sub-district.
In the Edo period it had two sub-districts.

In 1869, it was merged with 福島町 Fukushimacho to the North.
In 1878, it became part of Nihonbashi.

Awa Kaido 阿波街道 Awa Highway

Awa no kuni 阿波国 Awa province, is the old name for the Northern parts of Tokushima prefecture.

The 阿讃山脈 Sanuki Mountain range lies on the border of 香川県 Kagawa and 徳島県 Tokushima.
There are various tooge 峠 passes for crossing of the highway:
大坂峠 Osaka Toge, 鵜の田尾峠 Unotao Toge, 境目 Sakaime. 猪ノ鼻峠 Inohana Toge.

In the former 讃岐国 Sanuki no Kuni (now Kagawa) the highway was called Awa Kaido.
In Tokushima, the highway was called 讃岐街道 Sanuki Kaido.

In Tokushima on this highway was a town called 阿波町 Awacho, with more than 200 m along the road.
- The modern city of Awa was established on April 1, 2005, from the merger of the former town of Awa, absorbing the town of Ichiba, and the towns of Donari and Yoshino.

In Tadotsu town in Kagawa was the famous Konpira Shrine and the roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

Imabari Kaido 今治街道 Imabari Highway

It leads from Saijō 西条 Saijo along the coast of the 高縄半島 Takanawa Hanto Peninsula to Imabari city, Ehime,
about 90 km.
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.

Imabari is the last station of the しまなみ海道　Shimanami Kaido , about 60 km, from Honshu to Shikoku.
Nishiseto Expressway, often called the Shimanami Kaidō, connecting Onomichi, Hiroshima and Imabari.

From Kawanone in Ehime via 新宮、馬立 and the pass 笹ヶ峰峠 to Kochi.
In Kochi via 大豊町立川（たぢかわ）the Tachikawa river in Otoyo、本山町 Motoyama and a few more towns to the castle of Kochi.
This road has been in use since 707 as 北山官道 Kitayama Kando, a road for the local governor.
In the Edo period it was used by the Daimyo of Tosa for the regular visits to Edo.
There was also a shortcut to the Konpira Shrine.

In Kochi via 甲浦 Kannoura , 室戸 Muroto, 安芸 Aki, 赤岡 Akaoka and more towns.
Most is the modern national road Nr. 55.

A sea route until 橘 Tachibana, from there along the river 桑野川 Kuwanogawa. From 鷲敷 Wajiki along the river 那賀川 Nakagawa.
After crossing the Yotsuashi Pass to Kochi, along the river 物部川 Monobegawa to 大栃 Odochi, 美良布 Birafu,
山田 Yamada and 後免 Gomen, reaching Kochi.
(Now there is a long tunnel of 1857 m below the pass.)

A lot of 鰹 Katsuo bonito fish from Tosa was transported via this road.

Some say it was the escape road that 坂本龍馬 Sakamoto Ryoma took when leaving his home domaine in 1862.

Marugame was a harbour city in Kagawa, reached in the Edo period by pilgrims for the Konpira Shrine / Kotohira Shrine in about 3 long days on a ship from Osaka.
From the harbour it took about 14 km along the Marugame Kaido to the Shrine.

Muya Kaido 撫養街道 Muya Highway
Also called 淡路街道 Awaji Kaido.
Muya is the old name of 鳴門市 Naruto city, Tokushima.

In the Edo period this road was maintained by the Daimyo 藩主蜂須賀家政 Hachisuka Iemasa (1558 - 1639).
It took about 67 km from Muya town via 岡崎 Okazaki to 池田 Ikeda, Tokushima.
The road was mostly used for the transportation of indigo, salt, tobacco leaves and lumber.

The town of 撫養町 Muya now belongs to 鳴門市 Naruto city.
Muya was a connected by a sea route to 淡路島 Awaji Island and the harbour towns of 福良 Fukura, 洲本 Sumoto and 由良 Yuura and then again by sea to 紀伊 Kii (Wakayama).

To the West of Mura Kaido, along the northern shore of the river 吉野川 Yoshinogawa and leading to Ikeda.

Sanuki Kaido 讃岐街道 Sanuki Highway

From Marugame in Sanuki no Kuni along the Northern Shore of Shikoku via 観音寺 Kannonji, 川之江 Kawanoe,
新居浜 Niihama to 小松 Komatsu (now 現西条市 Saijo city).
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.

Tadotsu Kaido 多度津街道 Tadotsu Highway

The Kaido leads from Tadotsu city, Kagawa, to the famous Konpira shrine.
The roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

The martial art of Shorinji Kempo (少林寺拳法) was founded in 1947 by 宗道臣 So Doshin
at the temple Dōryū-ji 道隆寺 Doryu-Ji in Tadotsu.
The temple is Nr. 77 of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage.
