瑞應山 Zuiozan 蓮華院 Renge-In 弘明寺 Gumyo-Ji

神奈川県横浜市南区弘明寺町267 ぐみょうじちょう / Kanagawa, Yokohama city, Minami ward, Gumyoji

The temple was founded in 721 by 善無畏三蔵法師 Zenmui Sanzo Hoshi (637 - 735).
In 735, Gyoki Bosatsu 年行基菩薩 carved a statue of 観音 Kannon Bosatsu on orders of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno and enlarged the compound greatly.
In the Kamakura period it was the special prayer temple of the Genji clan.
In 1649, the Bakufu government alloted it more land and power.

The main statue is 十一面観音 Kannon with 11 faces, now an important cultural property.

The statue of Fudo was ordered by 徳川家光 Tokugawa Iemitsu.
Fire rituals are performed regularly.

- quote
Yokohama’s Gumyoji Temple
Located within a relatively busy albeit, low-key residential shopping street, Gumyoji Temple is one of the largest and oldest Buddhist temples in Yokohama. According to ancient legend, it was originally founded in 721 (during the Tenpyo Era), and established by an Indian Monk.
Following on from this, it is said that this temple was later officially opened on the 10th of March 1044, and is believed to have been built by a ‘Saint’, (although most likely, a local Shogunate or high ranking official), by the name of Ken Hiroshi. Similar to most other historical buildings in Japan, Gumyoji Temple has undergone numerous periods of reconstruction however, many of its original artifacts, dating back to the Heian Period (794-1185), have been utilized throughout its long history. This includes its famous wooden Kannon (Buddhist statue), which has been designated ‘an important cultural asset of Japan’.

- quote -
Located in the heart of Mito City, Lake Senba 千波湖 is a great place to relax for locals and visitors alike.
The lake is encircled by a 3km long walking and jogging route which also passes close to Kairakuen Garden and the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art, making it the ideal route for a relaxed day's sightseeing. Bikes and swan-shaped pedalo boats are also available to rent, and there are several cafes on the lake shore, perfect for a coffee or ice cream after your walk.
There's also plenty of wildlife to be found around Lake Senba with koi carp and terrapins in the lake itself and swans and other birds on the banks. Around 30 Whooper swans make their nests at the lake between mid-October and March each year. Be careful not to get too close – these swans are not to be messed with!
