This is a story about the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who is taken on a tour of the underworld by a Tengu from Mount Kurama.
Written in the Muromachi period.
This story exists in numerous lavish picture scrolls and woodblock-printed editions in libraries and museums around the world.

Ushiwaka's "Visit to Supernatural Regions (Tengu no dairi)
In this story, Ushiwaka learns of the existence of a tengu palace deep in the mountains and by offering prayers to Bishamon succeeds in visiting it.
The Great Tengu welcomes him hospitably and offers to take him to see Yoshitomo (his father), who has been reborn in the Pure Land as a Buddha. Following a tour of the 136 Buddhist hells, the two finally reached the Pure Land.
Yoshitomo urges Ushiwaka to destroy the Heike and then predicts his future.
Back in the Tengu palace, Ushiwaka and the Great Tengu exchange pupil-teacher vows
and Ushiwaka returns to Kurama.

it will stumble here and fall down to its death.
The villagers think this must be a sign of Yamanokami. They think Yakanokami is a deity to protect horses and cows and call him Toban San.

ayakashi あやかし something suspicious, the voice of Yamanokami
Shortly after the War, some 20, 30 men went into the forest to cut trees. They heard a voice calling for them and followed the voice. But the voice (of Yamanokami) kept coming from a different direction each time.
So they begun to recite a Buddhist sutra and indeed, the voice kept quiet.

On the 20th day of the New Year (mugimeshi shoogatsu 麦飯正月 eating barley) Yamanokami goes to the forest to count the trees.
If a person goes to the forest on this day, he will be counted as a tree and later experience disasters and misfortune.
So this is a holiday for the forest workers.

In the middle-range of 芦田川 river Ashidagawa. It's form is 前方後円墳. It dates to the middle of the 6th century.
The diameter is about 12 m, and it is 4 m high. The space inside is open to the South and is 横穴式石室, it is about 6,35 m.
The genshitsu 玄室 burial chamber is about 4.1 m long, 2.9 m wide and 3.3 m high.
The sendoo 羨道 passage is 2.25 m long, 1.26 m wide and 1.25 m high.
The excarvated pieces are
金銅製丸玉2個分，鉄斧1，金銅製杏葉ならびに鉄地金張りの鏡材片2個分，方形飾金具，鉄針，須恵器・土師器片がある。

Recent advancement in the study of the Tsuyazaki mounded tomb group and other sites has enhanced our understanding on the tombs of the chieftains in the Munakata Region. And archeological investigations of dwelling sites have resulted in accumulated evidence that tells of the life and activities of immigrants from the Korean Peninsula. Comparison of these two makes it possible to depict the rise of chieftains in the Munakata Region based on international exchange. Okinoshima Island is situated at a
pivotal location of maritime transportation and it should be possible to discuss the role played by Munakata chieftains in the Okinoshima rituals by linking the rise of chieftains with the international exchange with the Korean Peninsula. It should be noted, however, that the formation of the Tsuyazaki mounded tomb group and the increase in archeological evidence of immigrant activities took place in the second half of the Middle Kofun Period, while the maturation of Okinoshima rituals occurred at the end of the Early Kofun
Period. There is an apparent time gap. A major task for the future is to look at the intervention of chieftains in the Okinoshima rituals and the life and activities of immigrants in the period from the end of the Early Kofun Period to the first half of the Middle Kofun Period from a broad perspective of the post-Yayoi periods.

The largest tumulus in North Chikuzen during Period 8 corresponding to the end of Middle Kofun Period is considered to be Yamanokami mounded tomb in Iizuka City in Agglomeration Midstream of the Onga. River that has an estimated total length of about 85 meters, even though no exact measurement is.

山の神古墳（2号墳）は、直径約15ｍ高さ約3ｍの規模で、墳丘の一部に葺石が見られます。
古墳の年代について、指定時に「7世紀初頭から中期」と報告されましたが、『山口村誌』では「5世紀終末までは遡らない様」としており、位置付けが定まっていません。昭和32年に行われた発掘調査で須恵器、土師器、刀子が出土しました。
かつてこの古墳の北側にもう1基古墳が存在していたと云われていますが、現在では消滅してしまっており、その姿は確認できません。

The Yamanokami Kofun is also a circular type. It is 15.8m in diameter and 1.8m in height. There is a moat on its north side, and a terrace on its south side. The kofun is presumed to be built in the early to mid 6th century.
Artifacts found from this tomb include sue ware (gray stoneware).
The entrance of the horizontal stone chamber was blocked by stones.

徳島県名西郡石井町石井　Ishii, Myozai District, Tokushima

山ノ神古墳（やまのかみこふん、山の神古墳/山ノ神1号墳/利包古墳<としかねこふん>[1]/利包山古墳[2]）は、徳島県名西郡石井町石井にある古墳。形状は前方後円墳。気延山古墳群（うち山ノ神古墳群）を構成する古墳の1つ。史跡指定はされていない。
徳島県北部、吉野川南岸の石井町・徳島市境の気延山（きのべやま）西麓に築造された古墳である[3]。気延山では200基以上の古墳（うち山ノ神古墳群は3基[2]）が分布し、本古墳はその中で最大規模になる[3]。本古墳は1978年（昭和53年）に発見されたのち[4]、1983年（昭和58年）に測量調査が[2]、2014年度（平成26年度）以降に発掘調査が実施されている[3][4]。
墳形は
前方後円形で、墳丘に段築は認められていない[4]。墳丘長は約56メートルを測るが、これは徳島県では第3位の規模になる[4][注 1]。円筒埴輪は認められていないが、形象埴輪片や鉄鎌・鉄斧が検出されている[4]。主体部の埋葬施設は粘土槨2基で、墳頂部で並んだ状態で設けられている[5]。以上より、築造時期は古墳時代前期の4世紀後半頃と推定され[4]、山ノ神古墳群含む気延山古墳群では最後の前方後円墳に位置づけられる[3]。
なお、
1号墳のそばには円墳（直径14メートル）が位置し、築造時期は4世紀末頃と推定される[4]。この円墳の周辺部では徳島県内2例目（全国では約70例）となる筒形銅器が出土しており、畿内王権との関わりの点で注目される[4]。

Yamanokami Matsuri festival at 香美町香住区沖浦 / Kasumiku Okinoura, Kami, Mikata District
The children paint their faces black with charcoal and bring offerings to the shrine, walking along about 1 km, on January 8.
They pray for the health and wellbeing of the members of 127 families living there.
This festival dates back to the Heian period, around the year 830.
Yamanokami is seen as a woman who gets angry quite easily.

Around 1890, there lived a skilled forest worker named 兵右衛門 Hyoemon. On the day of the festival for Yamanokami he went to the forest. On his way back he stopped at the waterfall near the Shrine. There coming from downstream, he saw a strange creature as large as 10 Tatami mats, of green color, without a head or tail, climbing out of the river.
Hyoemon was frightend and run home as fast as he could, but fell ill on the same day and died a few days later.

In the park are many Yokai statues, for example of 河童 Kappa and 天狗 Tengu.

There is also a statue of a mother inoshishi イノシシ wild boar, a 妖怪 Yokai monster named Yamanokami.
This statue had one a prize at the Japan-wide competition for Yokai statues. It is about 2 meters high and weighs 200 kg.
Yamanokami is known as an ugly woman, as causing accidents and snowstorms.

If someone does, he will fall from the rocks and get hurt badly.

SENNIN - Butsusen 01 Koma no Kikori

Koma no Kikori 高麗山樵 （こまのきこり）woodcutter from Mount Komayama

He is Nr. 01 of
. 日本の仏仙人16人 - The 16 Buddhist Immortals of Japan .

His father was 真珠男（またまお）Matamao and his mother 白綿女（しらゆうめ）Shirayume. His parents are known as 神仙 Sennin, living at 春嶽（はるだけ）Mount Harudake in 相模国大磯 Oiso, Sagami.
On orders of Yamanokami 山の神, the God of the Mountain, they had placed the baby at the shrine of Koma Myojin高麗明神.

山下長者 Yamashita Choja did not have any children of his own. He found the baby near a tree in the shrine compound and educated it.
When the boy was older, Koma no Kikori went back tho the mountains to look for his parents.
He lived from leaves and nuts and at the age of 15 mastered the art of flying freely. Now the boy could visit his real parents on the mountain and fly back to the valley to see his foster parents. Eventually he said good bye and never came back to the Yamashita family.
But the family of Yamashita prospered and became very rich (長者 choja means millionaire) over many generations.
Some stories about them from the Kamakura period are known.

Hiratsuka, Mount Komayama 高麗山 and Mount Fuji in the background.
Koraiyama is another reading for this mountain.
It is only 168 m high.
There was a temple, 高麗寺 (こうらいじ) Koraiji, near the mountain. It was founded by 高麗若光（こま の じゃっこう) Koma no Jakko, a prince from Korea, Goguryeo.
Jakko arrived in Asuka (then the capital of Japan, now a village near Nara) but had to witness from afar how his country crumbled until the Chinese / Silla finally ripped it to pieces. He never returned to Goguryeo.
The Asuka Imperial Court held the people from Goguryeo in high regard. Jakko was made a high-ranking court official and was granted the title of kokishi, a hereditary title bestowed upon important people of foreign origin.
There are other shrines, 高麗神社, Koma Jinja, in his honor.

山下長者が誰なのかはわからないが、仇討で有名な曾我十郎祐成の妾となった虎御前がこの地で暮らしていたという伝承がある。鎌倉時代にはそれなりに地位のある人物が居を構えていたものと思われるが、その起源は謎に包まれている。山下長者屋敷を扇谷上杉氏との戦いで北条早雲が立て籠もった住吉要害とする説がある。それが今では主流となりつつあるが、この程度の規模しかない城館に籠るというのは考えにくい。単純に考えれば高麗山城を含めた一帯を早雲の反抗の拠点として考えたい。

. Tenmu, Tenbu 天武天皇 Emperor Tenmu Tenno .
when he was still Prince Ōama 大海人皇子 Oama no Oji and lived in exile in Yoshino.

Suzuka no Okina brought the Prince (who was also known as 清見原皇子 Prince Kiyomihara) to Yoshino to avoid fighting. From there the Prince kept fleeing to 鈴鹿山 Mount Suzukayama in Shiga.
The life story of the Prince continues, but the whereabouts of Suzuka no Okina are lost after that.
He was maybe the 鈴鹿山の神仙 Shinsen Immortal of the Mountain.

Suzuka no Okina felt that the Prince would soon want to become Emperor (帝王の気).
Okina is shown with the Emperor, both riding a deer and crossing a river.
He has invited the Emperor to come with him to the realm of the Sennin (senkyo 仙郷) to introduce him to his daughter.

The Kiyomihara Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Tenmu (673 - 686), the 40th emperor.
The date of erection is unknown. It is said that Emperor Tenmu stayed for a while in Ootomo Village (old name of Shoji) during his visit to Naniwa (ancient Osaka) and that the shrine was built to commemorate the imperial visit.
In 1909, five other shrines in the neighborhood were consolidated into this shrine, which was renamed the Shoji Shrine after the village name.
In 1942, the shrine was rebuilt in commemoration of the 2,600th anniversary of the accession of the first Emperor Jinmu, and the old name of Kiyomihara was restored.

Suzuka Mountains (鈴鹿山脈 Suzuka Sanmyaku)



a mountain range running through Mie Prefecture and along the borders of Gifu and Shiga prefectures in central Japan.
The tallest peak in the range is Mount Oike at 1,247 m (4,091 ft). In spite of its height, Mount Oike is not the most visited mountain; that distinction belongs to Mount Gozaisho because of its Gozaisho Ropeway, making reaching the peak much easier.
There are seven peaks in this mountain range.

Suzukayama is another hero versus demon piece based on a Noh drama.
The hero is Sakanoue Tamuramaro who was given the title of shogun (barbarian defeating generalissimo) for his success in defeating the Emishi in eastern and northern Japan.
There are many variations on the story, but this version seems to be based on the version of the story that has the demon being a "dog demon". Other versions have the demon being invisible.
The demon lives in a cave on Suzukayama which is near Ise. Apparently it was quite a dangerous place for travelers.
What is interesting to note is how halfway through the dance the upper part of the costume is undone and drops to act like a flared skirt during the spinning.

In Shizuoka, 駿河国宇度郡 Suruga, Udo District, near 三保の松原 Miho no Matsubara.

Not much is known about this heavenly maiden. She appeared at the beach of Udohama and became the wife of a fisherman.

A dance performed by a heavenly maiden who arrived at Udohama, Suruga Province in the reign of Emperor Ankan is known.
安閑天皇の御世、駿河国の宇土浜に天女が降って舞ったものを模したという.

Miho no Matsubara is known as the site of the legend of Hagoromo 羽衣 "the Feathered Robe",
which is based on the traditional swan maiden motif.
The story of Hagoromo concerns a celestial being flying over Miho no Matsubara who was overcome by the beauty of the white sands, green pines, and sparkling water. She removed her feathered robe and hung it over a pine tree before bathing in the beautiful waters.
A fisherman named Hakuryo was walking along the beach and saw the angel. He took her robe and refused to return it until she performed a heavenly dance for him. As the angel could not return to heaven without her robe, she complied with Hakuryo's request. She danced in the spring twilight and returned to heaven in the light of the full moon leaving Hakuryo looking longingly after her.

吉野山二女仙 indicates that there were two of them.

Prince Oama pretended to be a monk at the temple in Yoshino,

Once Tenmu Tenno played the 琴 Koto near a waterfall in Yoshino. On the cliff opposite the river something strange like a colorful cloud appeared. Looking closer it had the form of 天女 two heavenly maiden, clad in traditional layered robes, performing a ritual dance.


This is the beginning of the ritual gosetchi no maihime 五節の舞姫 Gosechi no Mai .
This imperial dance is performed to our day, even in Kabuki.

The shrine Hachimangu is located in the north of the pond ミゾロガ池 Mizorogaike (Mizoro-ga-ike), 赤城山西麓 wwst of Mount Akagisan. There is a large matsu 松 pine tree in its compound where the Tengu lives.
Sometimes he comes to the home to the 南雲家 Nagumo family for a bout of Sumo. When his partner is the son, the Tengu always wins. But one day the father was his opponent and the Tengu lost!
Now the family was allowed to cut the huge pine tree and sell it for good money.

The man had no idea what "four legs and two legs" meant and asked other villagers about it. But from that day on, the Tengu did not come any more.

On the eastern side of the 大倉ダム Okura Dam there is a steep cliff, and below it the 大倉川渓谷 Okuragawa gorge, spanned by the Tengubashi 天狗橋 Tengu-bashi, Tengu Bridge.
A Tengu has built it in just one night. At the cliff is the Shinto shrine 小倉神社 Ogura Jinja. Close by is the Sumo place of the Tengu.

In Hiroshima is a bus stop named 天狗橋（広島県）on the way to Konpira san.

Ongami-jima is an uninhabited island which belongs to Wakasa Town of Fukui Prefecture. About 500 meters offshore from Tsunegami Peninsula, it is the biggest island in Fukui.

At 大和田山 Mount Owadasan a forest worker was about to engage in a Sumo bout with a young priest who happened to come along. Suddenly there was a voice from the sky:
"If you do Sumo with that person, you are sure to die!"
The forest worker was quite surprized by this warning and stopped and the young priest suddenly was gone.
The young priest had been the Tengu, the Lord of this Mountain.

A philosophical perspective in ancient China, which developed from a combination of Taoism with the doctrine of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. It was a cult of longevity and eternal life, and those who obtained these goals were called Sages thought to live on special islands.
In China, gardens symbolizing this cosmological view were built in the Qin and Han dynasties, and in Japan as well, gardens influenced by this perspective were made in the Asuka and Nara periods.
Hōrai and crane-and-tortoise gardens, popular in the Momoyama and Edo periods, were also based in part on this philosophy.

神仙説【しんせんせつ】 shinsen setsu
中国の古い神話に由来し，戦国時代に興り，秦・漢代に流行し，魏晋時代に頂点に達した神秘的思想。神仙は人間の現実的欲望の実現者であり，不老不死であるとする。神仙となるために，修行や服薬の法があり，その方法をめぐって，道教と習合した。

中国で
生死を超脱した存在の可能性を考える思想。神仙説の萌芽は戦国時代(前3世紀)に認められる。たとえば《荘子》には風を吸い露を飲み，雲気に乗って飛竜を御する藐姑射（はこや）の山の神人や踵（きびす）をもって呼吸する真人などのイメージがえがかれ，《楚辞》には神仙との遊行がうたわれている。神仙説をとくに鼓吹したのは東方沿海地域の方士たちであって，東海中に神仙の住まう三神山が存在すると説き，三神山の信仰は秦の始皇帝や漢の武帝にもうけつがれた。

神仙伝 (しんせんでん）shinsen den
中国の西晋・東晋時代の道教研究家・葛洪の著書。ただし『隋書』経籍志や『抱朴子』の自序・内篇の記述から葛洪が『神仙伝』を記したことは確かだが、現行本は葛洪原作のものから改変が加えられ、収められた仙人のメンバーや文章は旧本とは異なるとする見方が強い。全10巻。
現行本では90人以上の神仙譚がある。序では『列仙伝』を取り上げる。

In 秦州 Shinshu in China a man walked alone at night, suddenly found himself surrounded by smoke and standing on the top of the mountain. There he met many people having a party, drinking and enjoying music. When he later tried to get up on the mountain again to steal their wealth, there was nothing to be seen.
It must have been the effect of the Shinsen or maybe some Tengu.


Sorori 蘇呂里 Sorori，shinsen no jutsu 神仙の術
Sorori was a Samurai from Mikawa (eastern Aichi) who was close to 豊臣秀吉 Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Sorori later lived in a mountain retreat and practised the way of a Shinsen, until he was able to fly freely in the sky.

The second unifier of Japan, Hideyoshi, was tricked into giving more than he bargained for by Sorori (Sugimoto Shinzaemon), a scabbard maker whose great wit and humor enabled him to become "a kind of buffoon to Hideyoshi" and the only named Japanese court jester in the available records.
... Hideyoshi asked Sorori what recompense he wished. He replied, "A paper bag full of rice." Hideyoshi, pleased with his moderation, promised him what he desired. However, several days later, Sorori arrived dragging after him an enormous paper bag, which he put over a great barn. Hideyoshi was much amused, and asked Sorori to celebrate the matter in a verse.
