Raiju is the companion of Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning.
While the beast is generally calm and harmless, during thunderstorms, it becomes agitated and leaps about in trees, fields, and even buildings (trees that have been struck by lightning are said to have been scratched by Raiju's claws).

Another of Raiju's peculiar behaviors is sleeping in human navels and thus harms the person in whose belly the demon is resting. Superstitious people therefore often sleep on their stomachs during bad weather, but other legends say that Raiju will only hide in the navels of people who sleep outdoors.

Its body is composed of lightning and may be in the shape of a cat, fox, weasel, or wolf. It may also fly about as a ball of lightning (the creature might be an attempt to explain the phenomenon of lightning). It's cry sounds like thunder.

If people walk around at night, sometimes it is as bright as daylight. They call it
tenbi 天火（てんび） fire from heaven
In 岐阜県 Gifu 揖斐郡 in the Ibi district during summer evenings there is a pillar of light toward heaven.
They call it
tenpi 天火（てんぴ）fire from heaven.

During a thunderstorm, lightning strikes and the Raiju climbs up a tree.
Lightning is also called tenpi 天火 "fire from heaven".

Sometimes on a fine day there is a very sudden thunderbolt and then it is fine again.
Once a tsuki 槻 keyaki tree begun to burn for seven days. When they checked its ashes, the villagers found three bones of a Kutoken yokai dog.

There was once a schoolteacher with a scar of a burn on her cheek. When she was a child, there was a thunderbolt and the Raiju Yokai got wild and scratched her cheek.
Now the children call her Yuudachi sama 夕立様, Miss Evening Rain.
Yudachi evening rain often comes with a thunderbolt.

Tenpi is the same as hi no tama 火の玉 "ball of fire".
It raced across the evening sky. Sometimes it makes a big noise.
This only happens in summer.

At the temple Daishooji 大聖寺 Daisho-Ji
Around 1720 at a small shrine within the temple compound there was a Raiju which could not find its way back to heaven. The priest stuck a long pole in the ground to help it climb up.
When the officials heard the story, they thought the temple must be blessed especially and gave it a lot of land as special reward.

On the night of the 地蔵盆 Jizo Bon rituals
six or seven friends were standing outside talking, when suddenly a 天火 heavenly fire appeared.
It became all light and when they looked around they saw something like a piece of burning magnesium, which made a sound and climbed from the middle of the fields right up to heaven.

久慈郡 Kuji district

If there is a loud thunder during the nawashiro 苗代 rice nursery season, the Raiju comes down from heaven and destroys the fields. If there is thunder, the villagers walk through the mountains and make noise with bamboo sticks to drive the beast out.
Others place bamboo poles in the rice nurseries. This would help the Raiju to find its way back to heaven before doing harm to the field.

三浦市 Miura

Kaminari is called オカンダチ Okandachi in the local dialect.
If a tree is struck by lightning and shows a scar from it, they say its was the nail of the Raiju Yokai, which tried to climb up the tree to reach the sky.

The Raiju is almost as large as a paper lantern and has a tail. If it falls from the sky on a roof, there will be a fire.

Tenbi is a Yokai light. Some come with a tail of fire.
If it is seen, this may be the forboding of more desaster.

天草諸島 Amakusa islands

A man from 鬼池村 Oniike village went out fishing, but the villagers did not like him, treated him badly and eventually he died.
Since then, every night there was a ball of fire flying over the 鬼池 Oni-Ike "Demon pond" .
Once the fire fell into the shrubs and it begun to burn, in fact, the whole village bunrnt down. The villagers thought this must have been a curse of the fisherman.
So they built a statue of 地蔵尊 Jizo Bosatsu on the place where he died and prayed for his soul, expecially on winter nights.

Old records tell of a Raiju being caught. On a painting it looks similar to a tanuki 狸 badger. But someone else caught one too and said it looked quite different.

On 加賀国の白山 Mount Hakusan of the Kaga domain and on 信濃国の浅間山 Mount Asama of the Shinano domain there live Raiju. They look a bit like a fox. When they get caught, people bring them to Kyoto or Osaka to show for money. They place them in a net of iron and do not give them anything to eat or drink. When there seems to come an evening shower, the hair of the Yokai begin to stand on edge and their owners place a straw mat over the iron net.

There is also a powerful bird

which eats the Raiju. Many of these birds live on Mount Hakusan.

In a cave in the middle of the mountain lives the 雷獣 Raiju, venerated as
Raijin 雷神 the Deity of Thunder.
Near the hole there is a lot of white hair, almost like that of a cat.
This Deity has the form of a small dog and others say the hair looks like that of a tanuki 狢 badger. The space around his eyes is black, the nose long and small and its tail short.
The skin on the soles of his feet is soft like that of a child and it has five legs.
In winter it digs a hole and sleeps.
It is usually quite gentle and likes humans, but when it rains, it becomes wild.

Once in a year with very strong rain two beasts came floating down the river, quite dead.
Their eyes were large like that of a dog, their fur ashen and the head long. The tail looked like that of a fox and the nails like that of a hawk.

浅口郡 Asakuchi district, 里庄町 Satosho

Once there was a thunderbolt at 虚空蔵山 Mount Kokuzo-Yama. But Kokuzo Bosatsu caught the Yokai and told him "If you do that once again at this place, I will not let you go unpunished!"
Since that time, there has not been a thunderbolt any more.
The villagers were very pleased about it and now have a festival every year on January 13.
In other parts they also know that if you venerate Kokuzo Bosatsu, there will be no thunderbolt.

東松浦郡 Higashimatsuura district

In the Sage region, the 天火 Tenpi is called hi no tama 火の玉 ball of fire.
This ball with a long tail flies slanting, trying to hide. But it is said to cause fires and if people see it, they use drums and ritual bells to drive it away.

If the 天火 Tenpi enters a home, someone will become ill. So they drive it away with drums and ritual bells. Sometimes even the weather improves after this.

On the land of the Nagai family in 岩槻 Iwaki the Raiju came down, run around in the fields, but the villagers got hold of him. It did not eat anything and died soon in his capture. So they took the carcass and stuffed it. It looked like a small dog, with sharp nails like a bear.

When a thunderbold comes dow, its like the Raiju scratching a tree and the scars of its claws can be seen on the tree bark. Some villagers even say they have seen the Raiju run up a tree after lightning has stuck it.

At 烏山 Mount Karasuyama there lived a strange beast, a Raiju. It looked like a mouse but was about as big as a weasel. During summer there were often holes in the mountain and this beast showed its head. When it saw a suitable cloud, this Raiju jumped on it and made its way to heaven.
Sometimes hunters went after this creature in spring, but never caught it.

During the Edo period there had been a thunderbolt hitting a boat on the sea. After that they found a strange beast like an otter on the boat.
Since it was such an unusual being, they thought it might be a Raiju Yokai and they put the creature in a 見世物 curiosity show.

A "fire arrow" is read. The red light is not a heavenly sign of something unusual to come. If the light has a bluish tail as it flows over the river, and looks like a ball of fire, then someone in the village has died.
Sometimes it takes time after someone watched a bluish ball of light until the news of a death is given.

Chang'e (嫦娥 Joga) is a Chinese Princess. She drank the Horai Elixir, for which she was imprisoned on the Moon.

Chang'e or Chang-o,
originally known as Heng'e, is the Chinese goddess of the Moon. She is the subject of several legends in Chinese mythology, most of which incorporate several of the following elements: Houyi the archer, a benevolent or malevolent emperor, an elixir of life, and of course, the Moon.
In modern times, Chang'e has been the namesake of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program.

There are many tales about Chang'e, including a well-known story which is given as the origin of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. In a very distant past, ten suns had risen together into the skies and scorched the earth, thus causing hardship for the people. The archer Yi shot down nine of them, leaving just one sun, and was given the elixir of immortality as a reward. He did not consume it straight away, but hid it at home, as he did not want to gain immortality without his beloved wife Chang'e. However, while Yi went out hunting, Fengmeng broke into his house and tried to force Chang'e to give him the elixir; she refused and drank it herself. Chang'e then flew upwards towards the heavens, choosing the moon as residence. Yi discovered what had transpired and felt sad, so he displayed the Fruits and Cakes that Chang'e had liked, and gave sacrifices to her.



- Worship
The recently rediscovered divination text Guizang contains the story of Chang'e as a story providing the meaning to Hexagram 54 of the I Ching, "Returning Maiden".
On Mid-Autumn Day, the full Moon night of the eighth lunar month, an open-air altar is set up facing the Moon for the worship of Chang'e. New pastries are put on the altar for her to bless. She is said to endow her worshipers with beauty.

大朝のテングシデ群落（おおあさのてんぐしでぐんらく）



北広島町大朝の田原・灰谷に自生するイヌシデの一種で、幹が曲がりくねり、枝がしなだれるなどの特徴を持った珍しい木です。最近の調査で、このテングシデの特有の形態は突然変異によって生じた変化であり、それが遺伝していることなどがわかりました。この珍しいテングシデが、大小100本以上群生していますが、日本では、突然変異によりできた木が代々群生しているところは少なく、とても貴重な地域です

The english name for shide is Hornbeam, and I must admit I have never heard of them.
... Apparently the tengu shide is a mutation and the only place in the world it grows is around Oasa. According to the local story, if you try climbing one of these trees a tengu will appear and throw you off.

Most Great Tengu 大天狗 live alone in a region, only allowing some Karasu Tengu to be their followers.
Sometimes they produce the 天狗火 "Tengu fire" , hi no tama 火の玉 ball of fire; to show the borders and protect their territory.
This is done by kawa tengu 川天狗 "river Tengu".
If people go fishing late in the evening, they might feel someone attacking them on the way home.

Kawa Tengu is a Japanese Yokai monster folklore in Kanto area. It is a kind of Tengu that prefers to live near a river.
One
that lives in Ohhatabushi in Tamagawa always sits on a rock sadly. But one spring day, this Kawa Tengu was sitting on the same rock with young female Tengu.
One
that lives in Mizune valley appears with Mountain Tengu and make noise of water splashing, waterfalls, and rocks falling.

群馬県内に伝わる川天狗
群馬県多野郡上野村塩ノ沢で夜、川へ魚捕りに行った人が〈川天狗〉なるものを見たという。
上流から火の玉が流れてくるので、それを狙って投網を打つと、魚がたくさん入って大漁だったそうな。
同じ話は上野村楢原にも伝わっていて、投網を打ったところ、火の玉は割れて網の目から出てしまったが、やはり大漁だったという。
これはおそらくカゲロウ、カワゲラなどの昆虫の群れに発光バクテリアがついて光っていたのではないだろうか。
寿命が尽きかけて水面に落ちた昆虫たちを食おうと、魚たちが群れをなして追ってきて一網打尽になったものと思われる。
どうやら上野村に伝わる〈天狗〉というのは、深山やその川沿いにおける不可思議な怪現象全般を差すものらしく、鼻が長くて空を飛ぶ、お馴染のキャラクターとは別物のようである。

仁助兄弟が、三沢村三井の霧ヶ瀬で網打ちをしていると、鮎がたくさん捕れ、天狗様がやきもちをやかぬように、いつもの通り、ハラワタを抜いた２、３尾の鮎を生簀の板の上に並べて贄を捧げた。しかし、天狗様の気に入らなかったのか、大きな火の玉が舟に落ち、兄弟はびっくりして家に逃げ帰った。このテンゴーサマはカワウソのいたずらだという。

ある夜、鮎を捕るためにやなを掛けて番をしていると、火の玉が川波にゆられて下へ流れる。相棒が、上に流れるわけがない、と言うと、火の玉は上流に向かって流れた。こうしたことはみなカワテンゴウ（川天狗）の仕業で、そういう時は、捕った魚はいつの間にか川天狗にみんな食われてしまうという。

津久井郡牧野村を流れる川に水神の渕と呼ばれる所がある。その渕には、幅９尺、高さ６尺位の岩が突出していて、その下に空洞があり、甲州の安寺（あてら）沢に続いていると言われていた。この渕には河童が住んでおり、子供は一切水浴びに行かなかったという。

妻が１人で家にいると、かわいい見慣れない子供が来て火をくれと言う。毎日同じ事が続き、夫は、それは人間ではなく河童に違いないから、火をやってみるとよい、と言う。その翌日も子供が来たので、妻が火を差し出すと、子供は「御免なさい」と言って逃げ出したので、妻は火を持ってその後を追ったという。

夜中に川へ行くと、真っ暗な中を火の玉が転がってくることがあるが、これは川天狗というものである。これが出た時には、河原の石の上を洗い清めて、取れた魚を供えると消えるのだという。また、投網をしているときに少し離れた辺りを同じく投網しながら行くもの、或いは、大勢の人の声がして松明の灯があるにも拘らず、その実何もないようなとき、それらも川天狗の仕業だという。

A man named 角田福三 Kakuda Fukuzo
角田福三氏が、１５、６歳の頃、船頭の金太さんを連れて網打ちに行った。しかし、金太はなにを話しかけても返事をせず、気分でも悪いのだろうと川原へ上がり、小屋で休んだが、やはり口は重く、ただ寒い寒いと震えているばかりだった。再び船に乗りこみ、金太に事情を尋ねると、舳に大入道が出たのだという。大入道は恐らくカワウソの化けたものだという。

小雨の晩、角田福三氏が祖父と鐘ヶ淵の岩下に鮎を捕りに行った。突然ドボーンと大きな水音がし、２人は急に体がゾクゾクするほど気味が悪くなった。祖父はきっと身投げに違いないと言い、翌朝行ってみたが、それらしいものはなく、川原の砂地に子犬ぐらいの足跡が沢山ついていた。それはカワウソの足跡で、水音もカワウソのいたずらだったのだろうという。

小雨のそぼ降る晩、鮎漁をしていたら、青色の火の玉が現れた。火の玉は２、３回廻って消えてしまった。こんなのを川天狗と言うのだろう。

・河童の姿形や生態については、以下のように言われている。犬のようであり、胴長で、後ろ足が短く、魚を食う。道志川にも河童はおり、子供が食われてしまったという話もある。昔の人に話を聞くと、しばしば言われる頭の上の皿もないものと言われている。（神奈川県史）

ということでこれはカワウソ的なモノなんじゃないかという感じである。実際後に引く話ではカワウソのいたずらだと言っている。で、このカッパをどうも「かわてんごー」というようなのだが、川天狗ということだろう。そうすると正しく「狗」を引いていることになる。

さらにはこのように火の玉と密接に繋がった存在とされている。『日本書紀』舒明紀の天狗（あまつきつね）のようなイメージがあるいはあるのかもしれない。

おおよそ全体的にどのようなものか皆語られている例というとこんなだろうか。火の玉でカワウソで魚を沢山獲るとやきもちを焼くのがテンゴーサマ・川天狗・河童ということのようだ。一方津久井の火の玉の怪の原因の多くは狐とされるが、案外狐と河童が近い所にいるのかもしれない。

When the 三保ダム dam was built to make Lake Tazawako, many homes were lost and to appease their spirits, various stone Buddha statues were replaced here.
Behind the 神縄トンネルTunnel is a stone statue of the Kawa Tengu.
The deity Hakuryuushin 白竜神 Hakuryu Shin (White Dragon Deity) is also venerated with a stone memorial.

During the early Edo period, a Kawa Tengu begun to pass around there and the fire got even larger 猛火 with roaring flames. Sometimes the road could not be used at all. People had to put their 草履 straw sandals on the head and apologize before passing.

あるとき、川狩をしていたら。突然火の玉が現れたので、驚いて逃げ帰った。また、同じところで別の人々が魚捕りをしていたら、どこからか小石が飛んできて怖くなったので逃げた。翌朝見に行くと捕った魚は一尾もなかった。川天狗の仕業。

夜間出漁した漁師が川天狗に邪魔されることが往々にあったが、物慣れた漁師だと捕った魚を石の上に並べ「かけごをあげるから悪戯を止めてください」と唱えて祈ると利目がある。

川狩に行った帰り、提灯がこちらに近づいてきて話し声もするので隠れると、間近に来て提灯の火は消え声もしなくなったので、不思議に思いながら帰宅してみると、魚がすっかり捕られていた。

夜、水田で鰌をとった帰り、後ろの方でざわざわと音がするので振り返ると、見える限り一面が洪水になっていた。駆け出す拍子に水田の中に転び、鰌を入れた籠を取り落とした。夜が明けてもついに籠は見つからなかった。川天狗の話。

西八代郡 Nishiyatsushiro 上九一色村 Kamikuishiki

精進湖には昔から河童が住んでおり、土地の人はこれを川天狗と呼んだ。川天狗は何にでも化ける。ある日漁夫が魚釣りに行くと向こうから小学生くらいの大きさで、あばた面の見知らぬ顔の者が歩いてきた。子供は漁夫に「どこに行く」と言葉をかけて行ってしまった。漁夫はぞっとして川天狗じゃないかと思った。その日は不思議と漁があたったという。

夏の夜、精進の者2人が湖水の中の島へ鯉取りに行った。投網を打っていると、一人の子供が湖水の中を歩いて渡ってくる。湖水は深くて立って歩ける筈はない。2人が見ていると子供は湖水を横切って行ってしまった。これも川天狗ではないかということである。

儀兵衛というじい様 Grandfather Gihei が精進湖へ網打ちに行き、投網をすると、何か大物がかかったような手応えがあった。網を上げようとしても上がらず、かえって湖の中に引き込まれて行く。じい様は怖くなり網を放り出して逃げ帰り、翌朝行って見ると網は湖端に残っているが、底が破れて大きな穴があいていた。川天狗の仕業ではないかという。

The Buddhist Connection. Why the Long Nose?
The Yamabushi Tengu comes in two flavors -- the long-nosed goblin with human face or
the beak-nosed goblin with human face.

Tengu are always portrayed as having a mischievous sense of humor, for they love playing tricks on those they encounter, especially on pretentious and arrogant Buddhist priests and samurai. Indeed, by the late Kamakura Period, the Tengu become a major literary vehicle for criticising both established and nascent Buddhist sects

The long nose relates to the Tengu's hatred of arrogance and prejudice. Priests with no true knowledge, prideful individuals, those attached to fame, and those who willfully mislead or misuse the Buddhist cannons are turned into the long-nosed Yamabushi Tengu (or sent to Tengudo, the realm of the Tengu) after their deaths. Corrupt Buddhist monks and corrupt Buddhist monestaries were in fact a major concern throughout Japan's middle ages. Tengu are thus seen as protectors of the Dharma (Buddhist law), and punish those who mislead the people. Over time, the folklore of tengu and yamabushi become intertwined, and even the crow tengu (karasu tengu) begin wearing the robes and caps of priests.

Historical Notes.
Tengu mythology was probably introduced to Japan in the 6th or 7th century AD, in conjunction with the arrival of Buddhism from Korea and China. These goblins thereafter appear in Japan's ancient documents (e.g., from around 720 AD), and are closely associated with Mount Kurama in Japan (near Kibune), the abode of the legendary white-haired Sōjōbō (Sojobo) 僧正坊, King of Tengu.
In Myths and Legends of Japan (1913; by F. Hadland Davis), the Tengu are said to emanate from the primordial Japanese god Susano-o. Tengu lore can be found not just in Buddhist circles, but also among Shinto, Budo, and Ninpo groups. As late as 1860, the Edo Government was posting official notices to the Tengu, asking the goblins to temporarily vacate a certain mountain during a scheduled visit by the Shogun (see Japan and China, by Captain Brinkley). see de Visser's report.

In paintings and woodblock prints, the boar often appears as the steed of the tengu or of their king, Sōjōbō 僧正坊. Sōjōbō is closely linked to famed warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189), one of Japan's most revered samurai. In a well-known legend, Yoshitsune lived among the tengu in his youth and received training in the arts of war from Sōjōbō himself.
Note:
The Buddhist martial deity Marishiten is also often shown riding atop a boar.

Another possible interpretation of the above image relates to the following Zen story: "One day a hunter was in the mountains when he happened to see a snake killing a bird. Suddenly a boar appeared and began to devour the snake. The hunter thought he should kill the boar, but changed his mind because he did not want to be a link in such a chain, and cause his own death by the next predator to come along. On his way home he heard a voice call to him from the top of a tree. It was the voice of a tengu. It told him how lucky he was, for had he killed the boar, the tengu would have killed him. The man subsequently moved into a cave and never killed another animal."

A bird-like goblin frequently encountered in Japanese folk-beliefs, literature and their pictorial depictions. The Japanese demons derive the name from the Chinese mountain god Tiangou 天狗, but also are related to the winged Buddhist deity Garuda. Furthermore, tengu are seen as transformations (keshin 化身) of Shinto deities, yama-no-kami 山の神, mountain guardians often associated with tall trees.
Tengu are of two physical types: karasutengu 烏天狗 identified by a bird's head and beak; and konoha tengu 木の葉天狗 distinguished by a human physique but with wings and a long nose. This type of tengu often carries a feather fan in one hand. Because of its long nose, tengu are associated with the Shinto deity Sarutahiko 猿田彦 who takes on the visage of a monkey, and tengu masks play a prominent role in some religious festivals.

Early Japanese popular tales such as those in the KONJAKU MONOGATARI 今昔物語 (early 12c) portray tengu as enemies of Buddhism, setting fires at temples or tricking priests. Priests who attain special powers through religious discipline, but use these powers for their own ends were thought to enter in the next life the transmigratory realm of tengudou 天狗道.
The earliest representations of tengu are in Kamakura period emaki 絵巻, such as the "Tengu zoushi emaki 天狗草紙絵巻" of 1296 (Nezu 根津 Museum), which criticize arrogant priests who end up becoming tengu.
According to legend, as a boy the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-89) trained in magical swordsmanship with the tengu king Soujoubou 僧正坊 (Sojobo) near Kuramadera 鞍馬寺 in the mountains north of Kyoto. Tengu frequently are shown in pictures concerning the life of Yoshitsune, including both the Hogen-Heiji 保元平治 battle screens (Metropolitan Museum) and depictions of "Hashi Benkei 橋弁慶" or "Benkei 弁慶 at the Bridge" theme. The Momoyama period daimyo 大名 Kobayakawa Takakage 小早川隆景 (1532-90) supposedly held dialogues with the tengu king Buzenbou 豊前坊 (Buzenbo) on Mt. Hiko 彦.



The character of tengu gradually changed over the centuries.
For instance, tengu were long thought to abduct children, but by the Edo period they often were enlisted to aid in the search for missing children. Similarly, tengu became temple guardians and sculpted images of them were placed on or around temple buildings. Tengu also are associated with yamabushi 山伏 or "mountain ascetics," whose form they often assumed. Tengu often are depicted wearing the yamabushi's distinctive cap and robe. Illustration of tengu increased in popularity and variety during the Edo period, usually reflecting the more positive and even light-hearted conception of the once-ferocious demon. In particular, the long nose of the tengu carried both comic and sexual meaning in ukiyo-e 浮世絵 prints.
