Kadomatsu are placed in front of houses, temples, shrines and official buildings to welcome the New Year deity, purify the entrance and drive demons and evil spirits out.

pine and bamboo 松 竹は「鬼の木」 are trees which the Oni dislike most.
'Pine lasts for 1000 years and bamboo for 10,000 years'
is an old Japanese proverb. Pine and bamboo are popular materials for kadomatsu because people wish that Yorishiro, the place in which the deity lives, will last forever.

On the island 薩南大島 Satsunan Oshima people put out Kadomatsu for the New Year.
Once upon a time,
an Oni had come down from the sky to haunt the island, but the villagers caught him and bound him to a pine tree. The strong Oni pulled out the tree and run away. They caught him again and bound him again to a pine tree, this time so strong that he could not run away. Since that time the Oni are afraid of pine trees.


Once upon another time



they put up a Kadomatsu with bamboo in the middle, so that the Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Since then people put up Kadomatsu with bamboo.

大島郡 Oshima district 瀬戸内町 Setouchi

On the island 加計呂麻島 Kakeroma they put out Kadomatsu with bamboo.
The villagers know that once an Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Once upon a time, the villagers had tied a rabbit to the Kadomatsu pine tree. The oni came and pulled the tree out with its roots. The villagers followed the imprints of the roots on the ground and could eventually get the rabbit back.
Since then the Oni are afraid when they see a pine tree and do not come close to a home with such a decoration.

Once a villager got up early in the morning on the first day of the New Year. He saw three strange black clouds in the sky.
This was the figure of an Oni who had turned up to heaven in great fear when seeing the Kadomatsu in front of a home.

一志郡 Ichishi district 美杉村 Misugi

For the Setsubun ritual (the former New Year ritual), people used to put out a holly branch with the head of a sardine to ward off the Oni.
When making a Kadomatsu, they used two strong stakes, a bamboo basket with many "eyes", a black pot hanger and a branch of hiiragi 柊 holly. The beans for throwing had to be roasted very well.

If people walk through the pines of the Kadomatsu decoration, they will become Oni.
So many homes put only one decoration out.

Tachidaruma, Tachi-Daruma 立達磨 / 立ち達磨 Standing Daruma Statue



This is the largest Daruma statue in Japan!
It is in Hida, Gifu 岐阜県飛騨市（旧吉城郡神岡町) and 16,5 m high.
It was made in 1973 in July.

The mountain belongs to the temple 曹洞宗補陀山洞雲寺 Toun-Ji of the Soto Zen Sect.
It was founded around 1400 and became the family temple of the 江馬氏 Ema clan around 1600.
The temple is better knows as だるま堂 Daruma-Do Hall.
There is a huge collection of Daruma artifacts in the hall, now attracting many visitors.

「町のシンボルにしよう」と達磨像の話が持ち上がった。 達磨大師は曹洞宗の原点の一つだが、別のきっかけもあった。 浩潤球学（1877-1953）という高僧である。俗姓を丘といい、丘球学としても知られる。球学老師は明治27年に洞雲寺二十世住職となった大潤（丘）宗潭に随侍していた。宗潭老師は伊豆の修禅寺住職となり、のちに永平寺副貫首も務める。 球学老師はよく洞雲寺にきて、町の住民に戒を授ける「授戒会」で「戒師」を務め、昭和28年に遷化されたが、住民たちは今も「球学さん」と、よくその名を覚えている。 　その球学老師は、よく筆を執り、数多くの絵や書を神岡の人々に手渡したという。絵では観音様の次に達磨太子の絵が多く、そのことを町の人たちは思い出し、達磨像にしようという話になった。 　またこの立ち達磨をきっかけに、昭和59年に全日本だるま研究会初代会長・今泉實平氏が三千点に及ぶ達磨コレクションの寄進を申し出た。すると建物は寄進を申し出る人もいた。これにより洞雲寺内に「達磨堂」が完成。展示を行っている。 　昭和30年一月、江戸木遣りが神岡に伝授された記念に、町の人々が行列を組み、横２ｍ、縦１ｍの額を同寺の金毘羅堂に奉納。以降、「初金毘羅」は盛大になり、達磨市が出て達磨供養も行われるようになった。

高さ8.9ｍの銅製の立達磨像。台座を含めると16.5ｍに及ぶ。
使用した銅約8tは、三井金属鉱業神岡鉱山から産出された銅鉱を使用。
1973年（昭和48年）6月3日建立。
「だるま」は禅宗の「初祖」として崇敬されている菩提達磨が壁に向かって九年の座禅を行ったことによって手足が腐ってしまったという伝説がある。ここから、手足のない形状で置物が作られるようになり、丸みを帯びた「だるま」が一般的となった。「立ち達磨」は菩提達磨が立位した銅像で、日本一の大きさを誇り、極めて珍しい。

Great thought and care were given to the culture when designing Japanese furniture. Every piece, while simple, had a function and elegance that helped enhance the living area of the family it belonged to.
- - - - - Traditional Japanese Homes
If you were to look at the interior of a Japanese household, the first word that comes to mind might be 'sparse'. This is because in traditional Japanese houses, from ancient times to the present, there was very little furniture to sit or sleep on. Without chairs or bedding, the Japanese generally used the floor to sit and sleep on. This is because the Japanese believe in the concept of ma, or negative space and a desire for simplicity. Objects would be placed very far apart, as the traditional Japanese believed that this space encouraged creativity. ...
- - - - - Types of Furniture
Even though their spaces often appeared to be mostly empty, that was not the case. There were several main kinds of furniture that could be found in traditional Japanese homes. Most of the furniture was made of wood, and much of it had handles on the sides so it could be picked up and moved if needed for aesthetic reasons or in response to a fire. Since the homes were made mainly of wood and rice paper, fires were a common occurrence.

Furniture in Japan had three main purposes:
sleeping and sitting, prayer, and storage.

To replace seating and sleeping furniture, a mat called a tatami was used. Tatami mats were made of woven straw and could be arranged in multiple ways.
There were also Buddhist prayer tables and altars found in most households.
They were made of wood and were usually simple in design, though wealthier households sometimes had altars that were gilded (covered with gold) and ornately carved.
A chest, or tansu,
was first used in the 700s in Japan. This armoire had doors that opened and drawers. The tansu was used for clothing storage and was generally very utilitarian, though sometimes these chests had iron banding or decorations. A tansu used in the kitchen was called a mizuya, and it differed from clothes storage in that it had sliding doors to hide utensils and dishes.
A special kind of tansu was called the kaidan tansu.
This was a storage chest that was in the shape of a staircase and also often functioned as one. In place of doors, this chest had drawers that were equipped with iron handles.

Matsumoto furniture
Matsumoto-kagu furniture was first made in the latter half of the 16th century to meet the demands of people living in the area. Around the 18th century production of furniture such as chests of drawers and dining tables for everyday use began. With the development of transport, furniture began to be shipped to all parts of Japan, and became known throughout the country. Matsumoto furniture is made of timber such as zelkova and Japanese oak, and is assembled using traditional methods into extremely solid furniture. It is then coated with over ten layers of lacquer, which brings out its depth and beauty.
Chests of drawers, display shelves and low tables are still being made today.
Matsumoto furniture was designated a traditional craft in 1976.

Bashiko
Bashiko, another Taoist immortal, is considered by the Japanese to be the first veterinary surgeon. He supposedly lived in China in the years 2697-2597 B.C. and cured a dying dragon by operating on its throat. Bashiko is rarely depicted in art, while another Taoist sage, Chinnan, is more popularly shown with dragons.

Kinko, who lived beside a river and was a painter of fish.
One day a giant carp offered to take him for a ride into the realm of the immortals. He returned after a month, telling his followers never to kill another fish. He then jumped into the river, where he was transformed into a carp himself. Kinko is usually shown reading a Taoist scroll while riding on the back of the magical fish.

Sennin Koshohei with a short stick in his hand leaning slightly over a small rock that turns into a goat. Koshohei led a herd of goats to the mountains and stayed there for 40 years in meditation. His brother found him after all that this time and was wondering where the goat were. Koshohei touched the boulders around him with a stick, and they turned into goats.

"Sei-o-bo" (Si Wang Mu in Chinese. Queen of the West).
The Taoist deity who lives in Konron (Kuen Lun) mountains. She cares for the mythical peach tree which bears fruits every three thousand years. Eating this peach bestows immortality. According to the legend, Tobosaku stole and ate the peach and made himself "sennin".

Tobosaku is the bad guy in the Japanese mythology who stole not only one, but three peaches out of Seibo's garden. So he became immortal. No wonder that Tobosaku is always shown as an old man, with a broad smile and a peach in his hand. Happy old man!

MINGEI - Okoso zukin winter hood

okoso zukin, okoso-zukin 御高祖頭巾 / お高祖頭巾 hood for winter

These are dolls of women with okosozukin, a special large hood, usually worn in winter to keep warm.
Sometimes also worn by women who needed to hide their mouth or face, serving as a veil. The cloth is square and can be tied under the chin with a string.
The hood can be wrapped clockwise or counter-clockwise.

The "okoso-zukin" (combination hood and veil) was a winter costume for women. Covering the entire head and part of the face, it is a square cloth with a string that is tied under the chin. Women sometimes used the "okoso-zukin" to cover their mouth. Women wrapped it in both a clockwise and counter clockwise direction.

Ebisu and Daikoku for Good Luck

The tradition started when craftsmen from Fushimi / Kyoto settled in the area.
Sugiura Izaemon 杉浦伊左衛門 was one of the Fushimi craftsmen.
During the Isewan Taifun all was lost, but in the 6th generation
杉浦実 Sugiura Minoru revived the craft of his ancestors.

Many dolls feature themes of the seasonal festivals and Kabuki actors.
They were also used as amulets at Taketoyo Inari Shrine　武豊稲荷.

Okkawa "Dashi" Festival
This Sunday it was the "Dashi" Festival in Okkawa - small town near Nagoya. This is a very dangerous festival to carry floats up and down the hill. Young men who take the first position of a steersman can merry the most beautiful girl in Okkawa area. Of course now it's only a tradition, but the men are fighting for the important place as it was long time ago. The clothes which everybody in town wears on this day is hundred years old (literally). They don't wash it so it does not bleach.
The Dashi's (floats) are extremely beautiful.
They have such a fine chasing that you can admire it for hours. On the top of them there is a place for performance of karakuri mechanical dolls which is very strange for the western eyes and even more strange for the ears.

Shumoku musume - hammer girl
APPEARANCE:
Shumoku musume has a head which resembles that of a hammerhead shark or a snail. She has large eyes which extend out from the sides of her head. She wears a furisode kimono, usually worn by young, unmarried women.
ORIGIN:
Shumoku musume is not a major yōkai, yet her image is fairly well known. This is because she was included in obake karuta, a yōkai-themed version of the popular card matching game karuta. Although no story accompanies her in obake karuta, her card says that she appears on the Usui Pass, which separates Gunma and Nagano Prefectures.
The word shumoku
refers to the wooden hammers used to strike temple bells. It is not clear if shumoku musume is a tsukumogami of a bell hammer, or if her name merely refers to the fact that her head resembles a wooden hammer's head.
