In the autumn of 913, 妙行 priest Myogyo came from Kyoto and built his hermitage at
深沢山 Mount Fukasawayama (445 m). He sat in a cave and meditated, not paying attention to the strong disturbing wind, thunder and all kinds of heavenly distractions, which came and went like mist and fog. Myogyo kept meditating and reciting the Sutras.
Now 大蛇 a huge serpent came dangling down from the cave, encircled the saint and fell asleep. Myogyo took his nyoi-bo 如意棒 priest scepter and hit the serpent gently on the head:
"Wake up, please!" The serpent opened its eyes and left quietly.
Next morning a deity came to him with his eight children (hachi oji):
"My children and myself have great respect for your virtues! You may use all the land to spread the good words and we will protect all the people on it. I am the deity Gozu Tenno and these are my eight children."

Myogyo continued his meditation and in 916 proclaimed Fukasawayama as 天王峰 Mount Tenno-Mine and the eight peaks around it as 八王峰 Mount Oji-Mine. He built a sanctuary on each one and spread the belief in Gozu Tenno and his Hachi Oji in all parts.
Then he built a temple at the foot of Mount Fukasawayama, which became quite large within time.
In the year 939 the story reached the ears of the Emperor 朱雀天皇 Suzaku Tenno and he bestowed a new name to the priest :
Kegon Bosatsu Myogyo 華厳菩薩妙行
The name of the temple is 牛頭山神護寺 Gozusan Jingo-Ji.

The area of present-day Hachiōji was part of ancient Musashi Province. It has been an important junction point and post town along the Kōshū Highway, the main road that connected the historical Edo (today's Tokyo) with western Japan.
Hachiōji Castle was built during the Sengoku period in 1584 by Hōjō Ujiteru, but was soon destroyed in 1590 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
During the Edo period, the area was Tenryō controlled directly by the Tokugawa shogunate.
In the post-Meiji Restoration reform of July 22, 1878, the area became part of Minamitama District in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The town of Hachiōji was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of municipalities law. Minaitama District was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893. Hachiōji gained city status on September 1, 1917.

高尾山の飯縄権現は、長野県飯縄山の天狗飯縄三郎の分家格で、右手に宝剣、左手に索縄を持ち、白狐にまたがった茶吉尼天の姿をした天狗である。参道を切り開くときに巨杉の根が一夜で動かされていたのは天狗の仕業と言われる。

何年も病気で寝ていた人が神隠しにあい、二週間ほどしてから武州高尾山の裏から人力車で送られて帰ってきた。その後気がおかしくなった。
小松の高さんは何年も病気で寝ていたのが、ある日突然神隠しにあった。2週間ほど経ったある日、高尾山の裏から人力車で送られて帰ってきたが、その後は気がおかしくなってしまったのだという。

Hayama-gomori - Retreat at Hayama.
A festival held between the fifteenth and the eighteenth day of the eleventh month of the lunar calendar at Kuronuma Shrine, Fukushima City.
According to a local legend, a long time ago, when the nearby hamlet of Kanesawa was being attacked by a giant crab the size of a tatami mat, seven families found shelter at Kuronuma Shrine.
There they received an oracle ( 託宣 takusen / 神託 shintaku) which enabled them to get rid of the crab.
It is said that a giant serpent (orochi) in the Abukuma River was also defeated thanks to a takusen from this shrine. The festival is held to commemorate these two events. Rites of obeisance and making mochi rice cakes are held on the fifteenth.
On the sixteenth, worshippers staying overnight at the small shrines, get naked in order to perform the yoisa rite, a pantomime of rice cultivation.
At dawn on the eighteenth, after having been purified with water, the worshippers climb Mount Hayama to recite ritual incantations (norito). There, an officiant known as the のりわら / ノリワラ noriwara acts as a medium for oracles predicting the weather, harvest and calamities for the coming year.

Hayama no Kami 葉山の神 Kami of Hayama (羽山の神託)
The Noriwara wears white robes and a white headband and swings a heisoku 幣束 ritual wand.
The villagers built a ritual fire in a place separated with sacred ropes on four green bamboo poles. The Noriwara swings his ritual wand through the flames for purification (hi o shimesu火をしめす). Often the Noriwara himself jumps over the flames.

He answers to all kinds of questions:
Will I have to become a soldier and go to the army?
Will I get ill next year?
When asked, the Noriwara swings his ritual wand heavily up and down and waits till the Kami of Hayama has slipped into his body.
Then he swings the wand up and knees on the floor in reverence (神あがる kami agaru).
Now all present chant a purification prayer:
sange sange rokkon shojo さんげさんげろっこんしょうじょう.

When the Noriwara gets some salt water to drink, he comes back to his sense.
He takes a short rest and then answers to the questions of the next villager.
This ritual lasts the whole night.
At the end the Noriwara swings his wand again through the flames (hi o shimesu 火をしめす).

Then all take the offerings, go to the shrine and have a feast of the food offerings.
The ritual wand can now be placed at the entrance of a horse shed to keep the animals healthy.

The selection of a villager for Noriwara is done with great care.
Once the man had been effective, he will be chosen again and again.
A very clever and learned person is not suited for this sacred post.

If a person does not show respect for the rituals, the Noriwara might call out loud that this person will fall down near the fire.

Once a Noriwara became ill on the day of the rituals and could not attend. One of the villagers assembled at the shrine begun to pray and then became possessed by the Kami.
He jumped up and down, up and down.

Once a man called the oracle of the のりわら Noriwara a lie and laughed loud.
On the afternoon of this day it begun to rain and there was great flooding.

Matuskawa is a small town outside of Fukushima City,

Kami from other mountains sometimes come for a visit and the Noriwara has to welcome them and see them off, one after the other.
Sometimes if Hayama no Kami can not show, they can take his turn during the oracle.
Sometimes it is 稲荷 Inari san, sometimes 水神 Suiji, the Kami of Water.

On Mount Hayama in 金沢 Kanezawa hamlet, people stay and pray for divination:
How will the weather be? How will the harvest turn out?
According to the divination, they make their plans for the coming year.

Kuniyama no Shinji 国山の神事 Shinto ritual at Kuniyama village

n the past, the Kuniyama no Shinji Ceremony was held on four nights: February 3rd, 4th, and 6th at a layperson's home and February 7th at the Hachioji Shrine for the main ceremony. However, today it is only held on January 3rd every 4 years at the shrine. (To be held next in 2021)
The ritual of Kuniyama no Shinji was previously called naruwai ナルワイ and tagayashi タガヤシ. At the beginning of the year, partakers would simulate the farm work carried out throughout the year and pray for an abundant harvest for that year. The ritual is a reenactment broken down into 3 parts.
The first is a reenactment of the beginning of farm work until the planting of seedlings.
The second is the taking of seedlings from the seedling bed and planting them,
and the third is the harvest.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, tree branches that have been hung from the shrine ceiling in advance are all pulled down at once. It is said that the branches piled on the floor will bring about a rich harvest of rice crop.
国山を説明する「しやうの言ひ立の事」、「籾種をつける事」、田を耕す「鍬打ち」、「麦の草を取る事」、奥州へ牛を買い下る事」、「草刈に参る事」、「東西に種をまく事」、「蚕のはか」、「苗をほめる事」、「田主の言立の事」、「東西の棒振り」、「是より大苗のはか」の場面が順次演じられる。

Once upon a time
the head of the Nakanishi family, 中西佐平 Nakanishi Sahei, went out fishing. But he only got a stones caught in his net. He threw the stones back into the sea each time.
That night he had a dream vision:
"I am just a stone, but not just any stone. I am Yamanokami. I came rolling here after a great flooding. I want to go back to the land. Next time you catch a stone, bring it back to the mountains and pray to me."
Next time he was fishing, indeed he caught a stone, brought it to the mountain and venerated it.

On the 28th day of the 9th lunar month, the Deities are seen off (to the great meeting in Izumo 出雲). They come back on the 28th day of the 10th lunar month.
But Yamanokami is seen of on the 8th day of the 10th lunar month and comes back on the 8th day of the 11th lunar month.

The tenth lunar month (now November), after the harvest when the Japanese gods had done their duty, they left their local shrines for a bit of a vacation. They would all go for an audience and to celebrate at the great shrine of Izumo, so the rest of Japan was "without gods".

On the sacred day of Yamanokami, one old hag went to the mountain forest to get some zenmai ぜんまい / 薇 Japanese royal fern, a favorite food.
Something strange with hair touched her hand and when she looked, her own had begun to grow a lot of hair. Afraid she hurried home, but there she fell down dead.
This is the curse of Yamanokami.

yoru no mamono 夜の魔もの monster of the night
yama no kami koo 山の神講 prayer group for the god of the mountain / kanko (かんこ)

This prayer group has special rituals for its members.
For example if someone has built a new home the children have to gather in the 大日堂 Dainichi-Do Hall. Their leader has a shimenawa しめ縄 sacred rope around the hips which he lays down at the big matsu no ki マツの木 pine tree.

The other children also have to lay down their tsuto ツト / 苞 ropes.
Now they can all go inside. They have all brought a special offering, シトキ shitoki, a kind of dough made from rice drained in water, squashed and kneaded with sake 酒 rice wine.
They smear this dough on their body to get all white and then go to back to the home of the prayer group leader.

Smearing shitoki on their body symbolizes they have become お地蔵さん Jizo Bosatsu.
Since Yamanokami is seen as a monster, this will protect them from his evil.

池の山の神 Yamanokami from the Pond
About 600 years ago, there was a long drought and famine.
This was the curse of Yamanokami from the Pond, as a Shaman told them.
The villagers had to make a human sacrifice to the Lord of the Pond, a Dragon, every year and this time a young man named ハンニャ Hannya was selected.
On the 18th day of the 9th lunar month he was placed into a 駕籠 palanquin. Before he entered, he danced
Hannya no mai ハンニャの舞 the Hanya dance.
"If the dragon of the pond can dance like this, he will not eat me. From now on I will come here and dance every year."
This was the beginning of a dance ritual in the village.

On the 16th day of the first and 12th lunar month, Yamanokami walks around the mountain forest to inspect the trees.
On this day humans are not allowed to go there and cut trees.

Sometimes when walking in the mountain, people feel a sudden dizziness, chill, or headache.
This is a vision of Yamanokami who might have caught a cold himself.

Rokubu known by their names

The motives for the Rokubu pilgrimage were manifold, often praying for a favor to the deities, healing of disease for themselves or family members, praying for guidance of a dead loved one to go up to the Buddhist paradise.
Most pilgrims remained anonymous, but some became famous on the way and had special halls erected.

森市地蔵 Moriichi Jizo
Moriichi Jizo was built by village people to enshrine the Rokubu called Moriichi 森市.
Moriichi stayed several years on the way of the pilgrim and was respected by the people.
When he felt his end would be near, he decided to be buried alive to become an "eternal Buddha" and thus continue to pray for the prosperity and safety of the village people.
This Jizo stands on his grave mound.

義安寺の六部堂 - A hall for a Rokubu pilgrim at 義安寺 Gian-Ji, Matsuyama, Ehime.



This hall is to enshrine the Rokubu named 友兵 Tomohei
He was a rich farmer and had a happy family life - all went well until his wife died of leprosy. He had to bring up his daughter おしげ O-Shige all by himself, but the girl at age 15 got the same disease as her mother. Tomohei bought all kinds of expensive medicine and prayed to the deities, but the girl did not get better. He sold all his fields, put 66 copies of the Lotus Sutra in a pilgrim's backpack and became a 六十六部 Rokujurokubu, walking away with his daughter.

On their way he was told that the hot spring at 道後 Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama would heal. So they went to Matsuyama. By now the daughter was 19 years. But the hot spring did not heal, her face became worse and she had to shield away from human looks.
She died on August 26 in 1806.
When Tomohei came back to his home, he was filled with grief.
He died on the May 18 in 1818.

Despite his deep religious faith he had lost his family. Tomohei died, saying:
"It is no use praying to Kami or Buddha for the safety of yourself and your family.
Pray to me instead."
This temple is called お六部さん O-Rokubu San by the local people.

In memory of a battle in 1179, remembering Minamoto no Yoritomo 源 頼朝 (1147 - 1199) and 河野通清 Kono Michikiyo (? - 1181).
Michikiyo killed himself 大松 under a huge pine tree.
The tree lasted until 1965, when it dried of old age.

Yamanokami no Shoogatsu 山の神の正月 New Year of Yamanokami
The ninth day of the first lunar month is the "New Year of Yamanokami".
If people go to the mountain forest for work, they will met with divine punishment.
They also make special offerings to Yamanokami.
Every month on the 9th day there is a taboo of cutting down trees.

This "New Year of Yamanokami" is also celebrated in 新潟県 Niigata.

Yamanokami gets angry easily and curses peopole.
The old mountain hag, 山姥 Yamanba, is an incarnation of Yamanokami.
But she also brings a good harvest if venerated properly.

Deep in the mountain there is Yamauba Jinja 山婆神社, often called バアサン Baa-San and also shrine Oyamatsumi Jinja 大山祇神社, where Yamanokami is venerated.
There is a huge boulder with two small caves. On the right cave ヤマノジサ Yama no Jisa (Grandfather) is venerated, on the left side ヤマノバサ Yama no Basa (Grandmother).
In olden times there was white water coming out from a hole between 山の爺さん Grandfather and 山の婆さん Grandmother. (They used this hole to talk to each other, says the legend.)
The water has been sent to the prefectural government for analysis and found to be quite healthy. So many people came here to get it. The water was also known to cure ear diseases, help weak children and grant an easy birth.
They said the water was white because Grandmother uses it daily to wash her rice.
Nowadays there is just normal water flowing there and if bad people come, it stopped flowing.
Grandfather was also called 金時さん Kintoki San.

If Yamanokami talks to a person, they should not try to argue with him.
In the hamlet 帯江 Obie there is a small sanctuary above the home of the 中村氏 Nakamura family, where Yamanokami is venerated.

Ashi nashi tengu 足なし天狗 Tengu without feet
On the left of the sanctuary for Yamanokami there is a rock called 足なし天狗の足休めの岩 "Rock where the Tengu without feet rests his legs"
Once a forest worker was cutting a tree the rock when he had the feeling someone was stomping on his head repeatedly. He got angry and swung his ax in the space above his head - and indeed cut off the feet of the Tengu. The Tengu was not clever enough to sense what the man was up to so he got his legs cut off.
The Tengu in this region are also seen as a kind of kaze no kamisama 風の神様 God of the Wind.

The 12th day of the 12th lunar month was called
hate no hatsuka 果ての二十日 the final day 20 .
This is an evil day. To avoid angering Yamanokami, people should not enter a mountain.
In former times victims used to be beheaded on this day.
In 怒和 Nuwa it is called ミテの二十日 mite no hatsuka.
It is taboo to go to the forest or go fishing or to cut material to make robes.
At 大浦 Oura it is the day of the festival for Yamanokami.
On this day it is taboo to go to the forest.

inu hito sanjin 犬人三神 "Two Dogs and one man as three deities"
At a small sanctuary at 川来須 Kawagurusu the person 伊藤綱次郎 Ito Kojiro is venerated as a deity.
Once upon a time there was a famous hunter in Kuwagurusu, who could throw a spear skillfully. He went hunting with his two beloved dogs, one white and one black. He was attacked by a bear and killed.
The two dogs decided to take revenge for their master, killed the bear and then killed themselves.
This episode is remembered as "Two Dogs and one man as three deities".
Kojiro is now venerated together with Yamanokami as the protector of the area. If someone walks past and happens to see the two dogs, he must return home fast, otherwise he will have bad luck.

If someone tries to cut down this kind of tree, he will be cursed, get all red in the face and almost faint.
He has to turn to the Northern direction fast, sit down and be fanned with a mino 箕 straw coat three times to get better.

Yamanokami no ki 山の神の木 The Tree of Yamanokami
It is not allowed to cut a tree of Yamanokami. The huge trees at the top of the mountain are resting places for the local Tengu and if cut down, the person will be cursed.
A bifurcated tree with two stems is called heigushi ヘイグシ(幣串) "Shinto purification wand" and it is strictly taboo to cut down such a tree.

Tengu 天狗 at mount Ishizuchisan 石槌山
Once a man took off early in the morning to be the first to climb Mount Ishizuchisan, when a man carrying a young boy on his shoulders came down the path, all clad in white robes.
They greeted each other and when the man turned around a moment later to observe the two climb further down, they were already gone. It must have been Yamanokami, who did not want a human to be the first in the morning on the mountain, who got angry. So he had asked his disciple, the Tengu, to interrupt the man on his climb.

A Samurai of the Bakumatsu period. Master of the 北辰一刀流 Hokushin Ittoryu School of Swordsmanship.
He studied with his father, 千葉周作 Chiba Shusaku, and became so proficient, he was called "Small Tengu" at age 19.

嶺岡浅間の天狗面 Mineoka Asama Tengu Masks
The Mineoka Mountain District ( 嶺岡山地 Mineoka sanchi).
Mount Mineoka Asama is 336 m high. On its North-Eastern side is a temple housing 白滝不動 Shirataki Fudo and the stone Tengu masks are close to it.

The stone Tengu on the way have some strange forms, with a protruding mouth and a nose like a dumpling.
The locals call them 石尊山 Sekison San - Venerable Stone Deities .



There are three sanctuaries for the stone Tengu on the way up to Mount Mineoka Asama.

The belief in Sekison San is known in the Tanzawa mountains, Oyama and at 富士山新五合目小御岳石尊 the 5th station of Mount Fujisan,

高宕山 Takagoyama - 315 m high
From its peak there is a great view over the Kujukutani mountains, Tokyo Bay and all the way to Mount Fujisan.
Now the center of 県立高宕山自然公園, Takagoyama Prefectural Natural Park in South-central Chiba.

Kujukutani is the landscape of the row of mountains seen from the Kujukutani Park down from Shiratori Shrine at the southeastern end of Mt. Kano in Kimitsu City, Chiba Pref. The mountains including Mt. Takago are part of Boso Kyuryo (hills).
This picturesque landscape is composed of deep valleys and overlapping mountain ridgelines, which is selected as one of 500 Charming Spots in Boso. Purple mists at dawn or the after grow of a sunset creates a magnificent scene like an ink painting. Especially beautiful is the sea of clouds trailing along the ridgelines and fading out into the air, which can be seen from the late fall to winter.
A poet, Keigetsu Omachi, described it as "the most wonderful sight in the world." It is said that an artist painter, Kaii Higashiyama, was inspired with this landscape and painted one of his masterpieces, "Afterglow."

Mount Takagoyama is 雨乞いの山 a mountain for rain rituals. At 清滝神社 Kiyotaki Jinja a small shrine the Waterfall Deity is venerated as 高オカミ神 the Mountain Deity.
(The old Kanji for this spelling is rain 雨 on top and below it three open mouths 口. Below it the Kanji for a dragon 龍 - a very complicated Kanji indeed, 高おかみ神.)
Below this shrine is the Kannon hall in a cave, protecting the Tengu masks.
Once upon a long time, Minamoto no Yoritomo had to flee from 小田原の石橋山 the lost battle in Odawara and took refuge here. Yoritomo stayed in the Kannon cave (高宕観音 Takago Kannon) and prayed for the return of his good luck and victory. On the pillars of this cave-hall hang the Tengu masks.

高宕山 The Kanji in the middle, 宕, refers to the cave, and this reminded people of the famous 愛宕山 Atagoyama in Kyoto.
Maybe the Tengu from Atagoyama even came here to visit ? ??

Aoso sama 青麻様 "Green Hemp Deity"
The protecting deity of the 鹿間家 Shikama family is Aoso Sama, said to be a Tengu. He protects from 中風 palsy. Its annual rituals are on the first of April and September.
The offering is red rice and never pumpkin or leek, since he does not like these vegetables.

A child once saw a Tengu on the bridge of 東茂原 Higashi Mobara. Soon after the child got ill and died.

A Tengu once shape-shifted and worked at a temple in I市原 chihara town. When the priest asked him to get some Tofu he flew all the way to Kyoto to buy it.

At 滝田 Takita there is 天狗の通り道 a Tengu road, where they pass with the most strange sounds when flying past. It is a rather deep forest and sometimes the forest workers, who stay over night in a small hut, can feel it moving and shaking.

On mount 伊予ケ岳 Iyogatake in the village 平群村 Hegurimura near 岩井 Iwai there lived a Tengu.
The warden of the small shrine could tell his temper: On good days the water bucket was filled by the Tengu, on bad days it was empty.

Mount Iyogatake (伊予ヶ岳 Iyoga-take) is a mountain on the border of the city of Minamibōsō, Chiba Prefecture, with an altitude of 336.6 m (1,104 ft).
Mount Iyogatake is at the west of the Mineoka Mountain District of the Bōsō Hill Range, in close proximity to Mount Tomi. The mountain takes its name from its resemblance to Mount Ishizuchi in Ehime Prefecture, formerly in Iyo Province.
Mount Iyogatake is one of the few mountains in the Bōsō Hill Range with steep rock cliff. It can be easily climbed within 40 minutes. The entrance to the path of the mountain is between Heguri Elementary School and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine. Mount Iyogatake offers a clear view of the other mountains of the Bōsō Hill Range and Tokyo Bay, and on clear days Mount Fuji and the Izu Islands are also visible.
Mount Iyogatake and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine are associated with a legend of a tengu, a supernatural creature found in Japanese folklore.

Sometimes the Tengu came down to the village to pester the farmers, steal the rice from their barn or the vegetables from their fields. But the villagers feared the curse of this Tengu and could do nothing. The Tengu took advantage of their fear and one day threw a letter into a farmhouse:
"Tonight at the full moon, bring the most beautiful girl of Heguri village to the Shrine 天神社 Tenjin Sha at the foot of Mount Iyogatake. If you do not obey, I will use my 天狗の団扇 Tengu fan and blast away your whole village in a storm!"
The farmer was struck with fear and went to the village headman for advice. He headman was very clever and said:
"If the Tengu will use his fan, we can use our own fan to teach him a lesson!"
He made a fan three times bigger as the one used by the tengu, climbed Mount Iyogatake and showed it to the Tengu. The Tengu wanted to have it and exchanged it for his own.
When he next tried to use the new fan to fly down to the village, he fell from the mountain - he had lost his 神通力 magical power.

Another legends tells of this vicious Tengu feared by all villagers, who was just friends with one man,
定さん Sada san. Sada san was the second son of a rich farmer. Sada san had once picked up the fan of the Tengu on the foot of the mountain and brought it back. The Tengu was very greatful and invited him for a delicious meal.
As you know, a Tengu needs his fan to be able to fly around in the sky.
The man, who knew the others did not like the Tengu, was glad he had given the fan back and received a meal instead, so the two became friends. The man went up to the Tengu's living quarters many times to eat and tell all in the village about his new friend.
Thus he helped to make the Tengu quite famous . . . to our day, it seems.
Once the Tengu boasted:
"I can fly to all the way Shikoku to 像頭山 Mount Zuzu-San and the temple at 金琴平山 Konpira-San and come back in no time at all!"
Sada doubted this, but the Tengu wielded his fan and slowly disappeared in the sky. Since he did not come back, Sada san went home to sleep. When he opened the shutters next morning he saw an amulet from the famous temple at Konpira San on his doorstep. This must have been placed there by his friend, the Tengu.

Once upon a time, the Tengu from Iyogatake abducted an acolyte, the son of 小松民部正寿 Komatsu Minbu Masatoshi, from the temple 小松寺 Komatsu-Ji in 千倉 Chikura and much later they found the boy at Iyogatake.
Much later.
Once in summer during the rainy season, villagers were cleaning up the mountain. When they emptied a trash box on the wayside, a large mukade ムカデ centipede came out of it.

At the top of the mountain is a Shinto sanctuary dedicated to
少比名命 Sukunahiko no Mikoto.

Stories about a Tengu living on this mountain date back to 921 and the curse of Sugawara no Michizane.

This shrine was founded in 1353, when collecting money for the 北野天満宮 Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
Later in 1586, it was rebuilt on orders of the local lord, 里見義頼 Satomi Yoshiyori (1542 - 1587).
Later in 1808, it was rebuilt by priest 法印宥弘.
It was the protector shrine of the 9 villages comprizing Heguri, but during the Meiji restauration it lost its power.
