SHRINES - Kikuna Shrine Gaman Yokohama

Kikuna Jinja 菊名神社 Kikuna Shrine, Kanagawa


神奈川県横浜市港北区菊名6-5-14 / 6 Chome-5-14 Kikuna, Kohoku Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa

There were originally five shrines in an area of Sugiyama Jinja 杉山神社 Sugiyama Shrine, which is now in 菊名町公園 Kikuna Town Park.
The new Kikuna Shrine is famous for its 24 paintings of chrysanthemums on the ceiling.
kiku 菊 means Chrysanthemum.

ここ菊名の地には、昭和の初期まで神明社(天照皇大神)、杉山神社(日本武尊)、浅間神社(木花咲耶姫命)、八幡神社(譽田別命)、阿府神社(武内宿禰命)の5社が村社として地域の人々の信仰を集めて参りました。中でも記録に残るものとして最も古くからあるのが、阿府(あぶ)神社であり、その歴史は任和元年(885年)に遡るといわれております。時の天皇、光孝天皇が師岡に勅使を遣わされ熊野神社を創建なされた時、勅使がその途上、馬具の鎧をお納めになったことからその名が付いたと史書には書かれております。
この5社が昭和10年、現在は菊名町公園となっている杉山神社の地に合祀され、名も「菊名神社」と改められました。その後、太平洋戦争の戦火を逃れてからは、同所を保健所建設用地として提供するため、当時の八幡神社の地(現菊名神社の地)に社殿を移設、以降この地で菊名の総鎮守として地域の人々とともに歩み、またその生活を見守り続けて参りました。
この間、氏子崇敬者の厚いご協力の下、昭和32年には社殿の改修および社務所・神楽殿が建設され、信仰の対象としてだけでなく、地域住民の交流と青少年の研修の場としても大きな役割を担うこととなりました。そしてこの度平成23年には、50年ぶりの大々的な社殿改修工事を終え、21世紀に相応しい姿となって生まれ変わりました。
新たに完成した拝殿の天井には、中心に「菊」の花を配し、四方にはがまんさまによって守られる24枚の天井画が飾られております。テーマは「菊名の絆」です。これは社殿は新しくなっても、菊名の総鎮守として以前と同様、変わらずこの地の人々とともにあることを示しているのです。拝殿には、24枚の天井画、輪になって咲く菊の花が中心に描かれ、四方は開運招福を呼ぶ四季を背景にしたがまんさまで守られています。

This is a stone statue of an Oni demon, supporting the handwash basin.
Actually, there are also two of them.



They were made around 1800.
It expresses the endurance of the stone figures supporting the handwash basin for so many years without any complaint.

EDO - Arakicho district Shinjuku Tsunokami

Arakichoo 荒木町 Arakicho, Araki district
Shinjuku, no sub-districts
between Yotsuya Sanchome Station of the Marunouchi Line and the Tsunokamizakadori Avenue.
Founded in 1872 as 四谷荒木町 Yotsuya Arakicho.

Before the Edo period, this area was a wilderness on the coast, called
潮踏の里 Shiofumi no Sato or
潮干の里 Shiohi no Sato.




There used to be the slope 荒木坂 Arakizaka and an alley named 荒木横町 Araki Yokocho.
The Samurai 荒木政羽 Araki Masahane (1662 - 1732) lived here.
Masahane is related to the story of the 47 Ronin and Asano Takumi no Kami.

The slope Arakizaka was later re-named to Tsunokamizaka.
There was also a bridge named 津の守橋 Tsunokamibashi over the 玉川上水 Tamagawa Canal. This bridge is now called 北沢橋 Kitazawabashi.

During the Edo period, the estate of 美濃国高須藩 the Daimyo of Takasu Han, 松平義行, Matsudaira Yoshiyuki (1656 - 1715), was located here.
The slope 津の守坂 Tsunokamizaka is also related to Yoshiyuki, who's title was 摂津守 Settsu no Kami
This name has been shortened to "Tsu no kami".

Settsu Province (摂津国 Settsu no kuni) was a province which today comprises the southeastern part of Hyōgo Prefecture and the northern part of Osaka Prefecture.
It was also referred to as Tsu Province (津国 Tsu no kuni) or Sesshū (摂州).

In the estate of Yoshiyuki was a waterfall and a large pond. The terrain was rough, mountainous and steep.
Once Tokugawa Ieyasu came here to wash muchi 策(ムチ)the whip for his horse,
so the pond was also called 策の池 Muchi no Ike.
In the Meiji period, the estate became a public park and many eateries and hanamachi 花街 pleasure quarters were established.

Today, Arakicho has many high quality restaurants and is mostly known as a gourmet town, or a place for food connoisseurs. However, during the later part of the Showa era about 50 years ago, it was more famous as a drinking area. People working at TV, newspaper and other media companies in the nearby neighborhoods of Yotsuya and Ichigaya would often unwind in Arakicho after work. Most of those companies have since moved to new locations but all these small bars and drinking spots still remain.
... This long, straight street is called Sugidaimon Dori 杉大門通り.
"Sugi" stands for cedar and in earlier times this was a cedar tree-lined road. Now it is lined with ornamental lamp posts, giving the street its cosy night atmosphere. The slope beyond the end of the street (ending at Yasukuni Dori Avenue) used to be covered by a cedar forest and the trees were used as raw material for building ships. That area is called today Funamachi 船町 and could be translated as Ship Town. "Daimon" means Big Gate and although the street name doesn't haven't any specific meaning in Japanese one can imagine that it was used to transport the wood to the shipyards. ...

... Don't forget to glance up occasionally – Arakicho has few high rise buildings but some bars are hidden on the 2nd floor. After the magic bar Kakurenbo on the left (notice that the entrance is just a hole in the wall), take the very narrow alley to the right. You'll emerge opposite the small Arakicho park on the S-shaped Sharikimon Dori Street 車力門通り. "Shariki" means a cart pulled by a person, and "mon" means gate.

At the start of the 18th century, the area that would eventually be known as Arakicho town (officially in 1872), was originally the residence of the Japanese feudal lord ("daimyo") Matsudaira, and thus this road was used by carts bringing supplies to his home. An interesting fact is that Matsudaira happens to be the birth name of Tokugawa leyasu, who was the first to unify Japan in 1600 and the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Tokugawa was a name that he took in 1567 (when he was 24 years old) and which the successive shoguns used till the Meiji restoration in 1868. The other members of the clan continued to use the Matsudaira surname, and thus the Matsudaira family living in Arakicho were related to the first shogun of Japan (more about him later).

On Sharikimon Dori Street, head left and walk past the bar C-shell, another great place for drinks in the evening. Take the next street right and you'll see a descending staircase on the left. Before going down, glance over your shoulder and notice that the connecting alley is also paved with flagstones.The staircase curves first right then left – we are now entering what remains of the old garden that was part of the Matsudaira residence. At the bottom, you'll find a shrine, Tsunokami Benzaiten (津の神弁財天), and a small pond, Muchinoike 策の池, or pond of the whip. According to the legend, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Japan's first shogun, would go hawking in the garden grounds and would wash his horse whip in this pond. Historical maps show that the pond used to be much larger.
After the end of the feudal system in 1868, the residence was no longer inhabited by a daimyo, and the garden was opened up to the public. Around the edge of the pond many tea houses were built, and guests could be entertained by geisha. At its peak there were up to 200 geisha working in Arakicho, which was then called Arakicho Hanamachi 花街 ("hana" means flower), or geisha district. This period lasted until the middle of the 20th century. Eventually all the tea houses closed and small bars and restaurants opened in their place. Nowadays there are no more tea houses or geisha in Arakicho. ...

Shrine Tsunokami Benzaiten 津の守弁財天
and the pond 策の池 Muchi no Ike.



In the nineteenth century the Shinto shrine Tsunokami Benzaiten 津の守弁財天. located in the popular Shinjuku ward (新宿区), had in its garden this small body of water with waterfalls in which the inhabitants of Tokyo could find refreshment during the hot summer days
... The beautiful woodblock print below was made by the artist Shosai Ikkei (昇斎一景), is entitled
"The New Waterfalls at Tsunokami Hill" (津の守坂 志ん瀧) and is taken from the series "Selection of Thirty-six Humorous Views of Famous Places in Tokyo" (東京名所三十六戯撰).

四谷左門町即ち於岩稲荷とは甲州街道はさんで逆方向、新宿歴史博物館ほど近く。荒木町にかつて美濃高須藩は松平摂津守義行の屋敷があり、急峻な凹地に大池を作り作庭していた(幕末明治に高須四兄弟を輩出)。それは屋敷の四分の一に達するほどで、池の排水施設として作られた石樋は何百年も経た今も地下で機能しているという。明治維新後に武家屋敷が民間に払い下げられたときにここは風光明媚ということで人々が集いぐるりに店屋が建って名所化。
明治5年、玉川上水から引いた水を西崖の上から落とし、懸泉とした。高さ四メートル。これを「津の守の滝」と呼んだ。一景のこの浮世絵はまさにその年に描かれたものです。津の守坂志ん瀧(新滝の意味。津の守坂は現存します。現存する小池は滝壺でこの写真の箇所に該当します、後年はかっぱ池と呼ばれました)。

. 河童 / かっぱ / カッパ - Kappa, the Water Goblin .
On a suitable day in the fourth lunar month, the children of the hamlet choose a home to come together. They made bamboo poles with small pieces of paper or toys and offered them to 川の神 the Deity of the River.
This would prevent them from being taken away by the Kappa when swimming in the river.

The 17th day of the third lunar month is the Spring Festival for the local Tengu.
On this day Yamanokami comes down to cut setchigi セチギ(節木)a tree for the festival and people are not allowed to go to the mountain forest to work.

In Yamanashi this tree is used by the Deity of the Mountain or a Tengu.
People are not allowed to cut it, if they do not want to be cursed by Yamanokami and the local Tengu.
To pray people cut small branches and stick them in the ground to show respect.

If a boy has long hair and comes to climb, Yamanokami will blow him back.
There are frightening sounds, as if a Tengu was falling from a rock and rain is falling.

a man once stayed over night in the mountain hut. He heard the loud noise of trees being cut down.
They say this is the work of Yamanokami.

Yamanokami has the features of a Tengu with very sharp eyes.
The real identity of this Tengu is a powerful deity named 山野の神 Sanno no Kami.
It is also called アマツキツネ Amatsukitsune. At night it might jump in the sky and fly around.

The people living here call it
「お山の神さん」 O-Yama no Kami San.
Along the access road are 1000 cherry trees, see above 山の神千本桜 "Senbonzakura Park".

The shrine was founded in 1715, according to a stone memorial in the compound.
The deity is venerated to protect farmers and craftsmen and good business.
People come from far away, not only Yamanashi, to pray here.

The main festivals are on the 17th day of April and October.

The 17th day of the first lunar month is sacred to Yamanokami and people are now allowed to go to the mountain forest.
Yamanokami is shooting arrows and people might get hurt.
Once the ancestor of 舟久保富雄 Funakubo Tomio went to the mountain on this day and tried to swing up his 斧 ax, but he could not move it down after that.
He became a follower of Yamanokami and prayed to it.

Once a upon a time,
a farmer went to draw water from a pond, but however early he went, there had already been someone else before him.
He thought that strange and followed the water drops on the ground. He lost sight of deep down in the mountain. He waited all night and saw a beautiful princess drawing water and then disappearing deep into the mountain forest.
After that the water dried up and only the slope down to the pond remains, now called
O-Hime Saka 御姫坂 Slope of the Princess.

On the 17th day of the first and 8th lunar month, Yamanokami is shooting arrows and nobody is allowed to go into the mountain.
People might get hit and hurt.
Once a man forgot that and went hunting for yamadori 山鳥 pheasants.
That night his home shook heavily for three times.

yamadori no tatari 山鳥の祟り the curse of the pheasant
Once upon a time
a farmer saw a pheasant in his field and took a gun to shoot it. When he looked closer, two animals were dead, they must have been Yamanokami as husband and wife.
When the farmer came home, he soon became very ill. This happened on the 21st day of the first lunar month, and since then people are not allowed to go to the mountain on this day.

Yamanokami no tatari 山の神のたたり the curse of Yamanokami
The 17th day of the 10th lunar month is sacred to Yamanokami.
The 21st day of the first lunar month is also sacred to Yamanokami.
The hunters and charcoal makers from Nagasaku bring offerings of ritual Sake to 鶴峠 the pass Tsurutoge
If something very unpleasant happens to man they say it is the curse of Yamanokami.

Yamanokami no ikari 山の神の怒り the anger of Yamanokami
The 21st day of the first lunar month is sacred to Yamanokami.

In the hamlet 橋立 Hashitate
they have Ebesu ko エベス講 a yearly ritual for the Ebisu followers, where they knock down poles.
This is done because on the 21st day of the first lunar month Yamanokami is shooting arrows and the poles might be hit.
In Kanazawa they celebrate from the 17th to the 21stt day of the first lunar month. On these days nobody goes to the forest. If someone goes to the forest, he will be hit by an arrow or wounded by an ax. So forest workers sty in a home and eat and drink.

On the second day of the first lunar month, workers take a rest and go to the mountain.
They bring offerings of sake 酒 rice wine in bamboo tubes and place sasa ササの葉 bamboo grass leaves in it. They pour these offerings over the leaves of a tree.
This tree will then become a sacred tree for Yamanokami.

The 17th day of each month is sacred to Yamanokami.
In the first lunar month it is the Spring day for Yamanokami, in the tenth lunar month it is the Autumn day for Yamanokami.
Forest workers take a rest and celebrate. They bring special dumplings as offerings to a tree and Yamanokami might think this is his special tree.
On festival days people are not allowed to cut trees in the forest. Yamanokami is out there shooting arrows and might hit them.

オオヤマツミノミコト Oyamatsumi no Mikoto
Ōyama-tsumi - This is another name for Yamanokami.
He is an old man with a white beard and a long robe, carrying a walking stick. He is full of poser and when he gets angry, his face becomes red.
He protects the forest workers.

Yamanokami no tatari 山の神のたたり the curse of Yamanokami
People think that Yamanokami lives right there in the mountain.
If they work in the mountain forest and have an accident and get hurt, they feel it is the curse of Yamanokami.
Before cutting a tree they perform special purification rituals to appease the deity.

Yamanokami no shirase 山の神様の知らせ advise from Yamanokami
On the other side of the hamlet Murohata オウマ谷は室草里 there is a place where the wood cutters take a rest and have lunch.
One day there seemed to be a typhoon and a man in white robed came and told them:
"This is going to be dangerous, better run fast and take shelter!"
Those who followed his advise were safe, but the others who had stayed up there were caught in a landslide and fell deep down into the valley.

This deity is venerated in 堀ノ内川久保 Kawakubo, Horinouchi.

At the beginning of the mountain trail to 獄山 Mount Gakeyama Yamanokami is venerated.
Around 1575 Yamanokami became quite angry and caused a large landslide. A lot of sand covered the village. Then a white horse appeared and flew off to the sky.

sankichi sama 三吉様 / 三吉神 Sankichi Deity
The mountain deity of 太平山 Mount Ohirasan (Mount Taiheizan 太平山 (1,170 m)) is 荒神様 a wild deity called Sankichi Sama.
Once a 大男 large man named ロクノジョウ Rokunojo from Sugizawa hamlet carried a heavy bundle of rice walking over the pass and even chased a kiji 雉 pheasant while carrying the bundle - he was really strong. He went to Akita to 相撲大会 a Sumo wrestling tournament and won easily. Quite happy he went to have a bath when 小僧 a young priest came and carried the bath tub with him outside to clean the bathroom. He became quite afraid and fled secretly at night.
The young priest had been an incarnation of Sankichi Sama.

Tanokami 田の神 God of the Fields
On the 13th day of the tenth lunar month, Yamanokami becomes Tanokami. People make offerings of 13 botamochi ボタ餅 rice cakes at kamidana 神棚 the shelf of the gods.
On this day people are not allowed to work in the fields or sow seeds. They are also not allowed to go into the mountain forest.

A pine tree in the form of the letter Y is called kaeroo matsu かえろう松 pine tree to come home to. Those growing in the East-Western direction are especially disliked.
Before cutting such a tree, people have to make offerings of o-miki 御神酒 ritual rice wine. If they do not have this wine, they must 小便 pee on the tree. If they do this, Yamanokami will not come to stay on this tree.

On the 15/16 day of the lunar tenth month, Tanokami goes back to become Yamanokami. People prepare
Tanokami dango 田の神団子 dumplings for Tanokami and place them on the side of the komebitsu 米びつ rice container. They hit the mortar with a pistle to invite the Deity.

Sometimes people hear the voice of a baby crying or the sound of festival music or even the sound of a big tree falling to the groung, but then they run away fast.

According to the tale of an old man, once there was a special light in 水神浴 the valley of the Water Deity and he saw two dragons playing tenderly while swimming down the river 清水川 Shimizugawa. If someone sees these two dragons, he will become very ill and die.
The whole mountain is therefore dedicated to Yamanokami and called 山の神山 Yamanokami Yama, Mountain of Yamanokami.

Until our day, the village has a special festival for Yamanokami, 『山の神祭り』held once in five years.

The Yamanokami of this district often turns into Aobozu and asks people to have a Sumo wrestling match. Since he is rather small, but very strong, people accept and then he throws them around, sometimes to their death.

Fuseki no Mori Sama 浮石の森様 the forest of pumice stones, includes the grave of 田の中 Tanokami, where he is called "Mori Sama".
Yamanokami is something different. He is venerated in old trees which are not to be cut down.

In Futaoi Island there are 山の神の森 four forests sacred to Yamanokami. They come with their legends.
Once upon a long, long time
there came four demons from 新羅 Shiragi, Silla in Korea and wanted to invade Japan. Empress Jingu Kogo gave them poisonous Sake rice wine to drink to get rid of them.
Three of the demons fell down at Futaoi no Mori 蓋井の森, the forest of Futaoi and one demon fell down at Takano no Mori 高野の森, the forest of Takano. Their vengeful spirits brought much trouble to the inhabitants of the island and to appease them, they were venerated as Deities.

柳井市 Yanai city 平郡島 Heigun Island

. ike no nushi 池の主と伝説 Legends about the Master of the Pond .
The serpent deity from the pond of 皇座山 / オオザ山 / おおざさん Ozasan wanted to go to the pond on the other side of the island and asked the fishermen to bring her there.
Then the fishermen put their nets in the water and had a great catch, but only once, as they were told by the serpent. The second time they caught only old roof tiles and dirt.
Now the fishermen spread out a large furoshiki 風呂敷 wrapping cloth and - oh wonder - it turned into a large pond.

ubagami 姥神 lit. "old woman deity" - "Grandmother Deity"

- - - - - The legends from Esashi in Hokkaido know this:

Orii baasan 折居婆さん / オリイバアサン grandmother Orii
Grandmother Orii lived in Esashi. She prayed to the deities every morning and could tell the villagers about the weather of the day. The villagers thought of her as a deity, because her weather forecast was always right.
Once there was a bad catch for herring. That night grandmother Orii saw murasaki no hi 紫の火 a divine purple light in the sky above the sea. As the deity had shown her, she went out to the sea, poured ritual water from a Tokkuri container in that spot and folded her hands in prayer. Now a huge group of herring came by and the villagers had enough to eat for a long time.
When the villagers went to the home of Grandmother Orii, she was gone and since then they prayed to her as
Ubagami 姥神 "the old woman deity".

This name is also read おりん婆(折居婆)Orin Ba.

- Another version of the legend:

Once there lived an old couple in 江差 Esashi which had not enough to eat.
A deity appeared in their dream and told them to explore a certain area of the sea. Next morning they went out and found a lot of herring. Now they could eat fish to their heart's content.
The Ubagami deity venerated in Esashi is seen as this old couple, they are the ancestors of the herring fishermen.

The Ubagami Daijingu Togyo Festival – held every year from August 9 to 11 – is what the residents of Esashi most look forward to every year. Approximately 50,000 people gather in the town – which has a population of only 8,000 – to watch portable shrines and 13 floats being paraded around the streets.
- A festival that has continued since the Edo Period
Since the Edo Period, Esashi prospered as a herring fishing community, and was greatly influenced by the culture and festivals of the Kansai and Hokuriku regions due to the Kitamae-bune ships that arrived via the Sea of Japan shipping route. The origins of the Ubagami Daijingu Togyo Festival date back 375 years, when it began with the people of Esashi thanking the gods for the plentiful herring catches.
- The chair of the Esashi Sightseeing & Convention Association, Saikaiya Nozomu is also a doll maker who creates the mannequins that ride on the floats, and from an early age he grew up with the shrine festivals. Each of the town's neighborhood associations is responsible for the management and operation of one of the floats, which cost over 10 million yen to build and between 1.8 and 1.9 million yen per year to maintain. These costs are generously borne by the residents of the neighborhoods and people who were born in or have connections with the town. "People who come from the cities are motivated by Esashi residents' enthusiasm and passion for the festival," says Saikaiya. "Perhaps it's because they sense the eagerness to preserve the local culture inherited from the Edo period."
Saikaiya's father was the doll maker who, under the name of Hokuryu, created five of the mannequins that ride on the thirteen floats mannequins. Nozomu is the second-generation Hokuryu. "Mannequins made by myself and my father adorn the festival," says Saikaiya. "Such emotions cannot be experienced anywhere else."
- Young people return home for the festival
The children of Esashi are raised on drum & flute lullabies. They are pulling floats as soon as they can walk, and are playing the flute and drums when they become elementary and junior high school pupils. They then take on the role of protecting the float from overhead cables, and when they become adults they are responsible for supervising the parade of floats, with the ultimate aim of becoming one of the people charged with overall responsibility for the float.
- Natsuhara Shigeki,
who works at an elementary school and is also the vice chair of the festival organizing committee tells of an episode that expresses Esashi residents' feelings toward the festival. "At a job interview in a certain city, a high school student from Esashi asked if he could take a holiday on the same three festival days every year. He explained about the Ubagami Daijingu Togyo Festival and that without the younger generation, the floats would not be mobile and asked the boss for the time off. The boss of the company was surprised and impressed by the high school student's enthusiasm for his hometown, something that is not so common, and decided to employ him straight away."
Everyone gets involved in the festival – from young children to senior citizens. All homes prepare alcohol and food to welcome visitors. According to Natsuhara, "Esashi has created a culture in which all people are involved." Saikaiya also adds "Each household serves local cuisine made with recipes handed down from the past, making it a festival in which food culture is also conveyed."

Ubagami Daijingu is the oldest shrine in Hokkaido, established in 1447. It is said to have been established as a place for herring-fishers to worship the image of the god they believed in. Once a year, the people of Esashi carry out the Togyosai, in which they offer their thanks for a bountiful catch of fish.
Thirteen richly decorated floats (called "yama" in Esashi) are paraded downtown and uptown in a dignified procession. This festival is clearly dear to the hearts of everyone in Esashi—during the Togyosai, the population of the town swells to five times its normal size because of the many people returning home. The Togyosai is truly a festival fit to represent Hokkaido.

Amenokoyanenomikoto/Amenokoyanomikoto / Ameno Koyane




He belongs to the deities of Shrine Kasuga Jinja, Nara.
He is considered to be an ancestor of the 中臣 Nakatomi clan and its most famous branch - the Fujiwara clan.

中臣連等の祖。天の石屋・天孫降臨段に登場。天の石屋段には天照大御神を天石屋戸から招き出すために布刀詔戸言を申した神。天孫降臨では五伴緒として番能邇々芸命に随行する。

Ameno Koyane
is known to have been one of the Gods of the Five Guilds. He was one of the many Gods present when Ninigi made his descent to Earth. This god and many others agreed after a decree by Amaterasu to serve and follow Ninigi.

The Gods of the Five Guilds are a group of Gods with the names Ameno Koyane, Ameno Futodama, Ameno Uzume, Ishikoridome and Tamaya.
Each of these Gods agreed to follow the royal decree of Amaterasu to follow and serve Ninigi after his decent to the Earth. Two of these Gods (Ameno Koyane and Ameno Futodama) were given special decrees to aid and protect Ninigi.

Kogotomusubi no Kami 興台産霊神
The father of Amanokoyane, ancestral kami of the Fujiwara clan.
According to the "divine-age" records in Sendai kuji hongi, Kogotomusubi was identified as the mikogami (divine offspring) of Ichichimusuhi no mikoto, a kami in the lineage of another kami, Tsuhayamusuhi no mikoto. Based on the theory that the name Kogoto is formed from a plural prefix attached to the word koto meaning "word," the name has been interpreted to mean kotodama, namely a kami of speech and language.

chichigami 乳神 "breast deity"
At the root of an old pine tree there was a spring and in the nearby sanctuary there was a stone memorial for Ubagami.
The wife of 用明天皇 Yomei Tenno (518 - 587) gave birth here on a rock called Shitahimo no ishi 下紐の石, but she did not have enough milk to feed the baby. A diviner told her to use the water from the spring and when she drunk it, her milk begun to flow. A stone statue was erected in her honor.
Now many women come here to pray.
Sometimes they scratch a bit of the breast of the statue and drink the powder to make their own milk flow.
As a sign of greatfullness many women later bring a plush doll of a female breast.

daishimizu 大清水 "great clear water"
It is located on the Eastern side of the bridge Itsutsubachi 五ツ橋. It is one of the three "clear water" locations and sometimes called sato shimizu 里清水.
Since olden times there was a sanctuary for Ubagami.
The water could heal cough from children.
People make offerings of ema 絵馬 votive tablets of a rooster turned upside-down.

Along the river bank the deity Ubagami sama 姥神様 is venerated.
She is also mamorigami 守り神 the protector deity at the entrance of the village.

... Temple Ashikura-Ji had around 30 subtemples, of which the 姥堂 Ubadō and the Enmadō were the most important.

It was only at this one time in the year, on the middle day of the autumn equinox, that women were allowed to enter the precincts, normally forbidden them, as far as the Ubadō, from where, having received the protection of the deity Ubagami, they worshipped the sacred mountain and prayed for rebirth in paradise.
The rite was an enactment of death and rebirth.

In the Senboku district is a statue of Jizo. If children want to lick its nose, they can not reach it. Even if a tall child comes, it can not reach the nose, because the statue gets taller.
Sometimes grown-up people put kurozatō 黒砂糖 brown sugar on the nose and lick it.

Around 1950, a man was walking home from 八戸 Hachinohe , eating brown sugar and sobamochi そばもち mochi cakes from buckwheat flower on his way. At the pine tree by the roadside he was always tricked by a fox called オバフトコロ Obafutokoro.
In olden times there used to be a prison at this place and the fox might be the wandering soul of someone.

At the end of the rice-planting season, a grandfather and a young man were walking in the evening and resting on a mountain road called ニイザカ Niizaka. Along came a young woman carrying a juubako 重箱 food box and gave them some sato mochi 砂糖餅 rice cakes made with sugar. They tasted so delicious, as if they had just been made.
The next morning they found black horse shit sticking to their teeth. Aaaa, they had been bewitched by a fox !

If a child falls ill, the mother makes sugared sweets with soy beans as an offering for 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu.
After the offering the sweets are given to the child and the illness will heal very fast.

To the West of 崇徳天皇の山 the Mountain related to Sutoku Tenno (1119 - 1164) there lived a man named 庄村武八 Masamura Buhachi. Once he had loaded sugar barrels on his bull to carry to the market, when the bull suddenly said:
"Before loading me with sugar, you did not give me any fodder. This is too hard on me, so I will not go!"
Buhachi was very surprized and afrain and never loaded the bull with sugar again.

. yamachichi 山チチ / 山地乳 Yamachichi Yokai monster .
Once upon a time,
a 馬曳き pack horse leader met the Yamachichi on the last night of the year. The Yokai took away all things loaded on the horse, carrots, large radish, sugar and finally the horse itself.
That night the Yamachichi slept in the cooking kettle, so the man put a heavy stone on the lid and made fire below it. The Yamachichi asked for help, but he kept tending to the fire. When the voice from the kettle had stopped, he opened it and found its body all burned to black ashes.

There lived a fox in a hole near the temple, but one day it was gone.
Once grandmother met the wife of the priest and got some sugar from her. But the wife of the priest had been at a different place altogether. Most probably a fox had taken the shape of the woman and expressed his gratitude for former kindness by giving her some sugar.

A school boy was on his way home from 合川 Aikawa and had reached 三宝分 Sanpobun. He had been out buying carrots and sugar. At the pass his mother came to meet him, so he gave her the carrots and the sugar. The mother said "I have another errand to do, so you go home first!" When he came home his mother was there, so he had been tricked by a fox.
Next morning both walked the way again and found a carrot dropped by the roadside.

If a baby has been born, sugar can be put on Nandina leaves to prevent poison from enering the body.
