Aomori Folk Art - 青森県　

The capital of the prefecture is Aomori.
Hirosaki is famous for the cherryblossoms in the castle park.
Two peninsulas, Tsugaru and Shimokita, are placed around the bay of Mutsu.

Part of Aomori was the former domain of Nanbu 南部 Nambu.

One of the great summer events in Tohoku is the

It also comes with its toy many versions.

Aomori ningyoo 青森人形 / 土人形 clay dolls from Aomori



namazu nori no saru なまず乗り猿 monkey riding a catfish
and the other animals of the zodiac.
The dolls are twisted by hand 手捻り, so each one is an original and usually with a touch of humour.
Made by 福原英治郎 Fukuhara Eijiro, but since his death they are not made any more.

They basically jump two times on the right foot and two times on the left, for about 2 hours during the long parade of the Nebuta festival! This is not a dance, but a jumping performance.

Wood was cut into three block and then rough woodcarving was done with one knife, with a few colors added later.
Apart from Daruma, there were also Christian priests (bareren) ばてれん, nuns 修道尼 and visitors for the plum blossoms.

Fujiwara no Hidesato (赤堀 藤原秀郷)
was a kuge (court bureaucrat) of tenth century Heian Japan. He is famous for his military exploits and courage, and is regarded as the common ancestor of the Ōshū branch of the Fujiwara clan, the Yūki, Oyama, and Shimokōbe families.

Hidesato served under Emperor Suzaku, and fought alongside Taira no Sadamori in 940 in suppressing the revolt of Taira no Masakado. His prayer for victory before this battle is commemorated in the Kachiya Festival. Hidesato was then appointed Chinjufu-shogun (Defender of the North) and Governor of Shimotsuke Province.

Hidesato, also called Tawara no Tota, is a popular figure in the Japanese legend, such as
"Tawara no Tota Conquering the Giant Centipede on Mount Mikami"
Mukadeyama むかで山 / 百足山 "Mount Centipede".
Since he drove away the mukade with his arrow, there are now no people in the village who can see clearly with both eyes.

Once Sarumaru Daiyu was hunting a white deer and came down all the way to Nikko. The Huge Mukade 大ムカデ from Nikko eats the children of the white deer, this deer mother had called the famous arrow shooter Sarumaru to help.
He put some spittle on his arrow and shot the mukade dead.
Even now if people want to kill a mudake, they use spittle.

Nitta Yoshioki 新田義興
(? - 1358)

Yoshioki was the second son of Nitta Yoshisada,
who supported the Southern Court of Emperor Go-Daigo and Kamakura from the Hōjō clan in 1333. Yoshioki aided his father in the siege of Kamakura in 1333, and battled alongside Kitabatake Akiie. The following year, he fought alongside Kitabatake Akinobu, fortified Mt. Otoko, but was soon routed and forced to seek refuge at Mt. Yoshino.

The conflict with the Ashikaga clan continued for several decades, and in 1352, Yoshioki ousted Ashikaga Motouji from Kamakura, with the aid of his brother Nitta Yoshimune and cousin Wakiya Yoshiharu. Soon after taking control of the city, however, he was forced out by Ashikaga Takauji. Returning to the countryside of Kozuke and Musashi provinces, Yoshioki continued to fight for some time before being captured by Takezawa Nagahira. He was sentenced to death by the minister of Motouji, Hatakeyama Kunikiyo, and was executed at the age of 28 by drowning in the Tama River at Yaguchi in present-day Ōta ward of Tokyo.

A shrine at 矢口渡 Yaguchi no Watashi, the Nitta Shrine, is dedicated to Yoshioki. He is revered under the name Nitta Daimyōjin (新田大明神).

Yoshioki is the subject of an Edo-period kabuki play by Hiraga Gennai (1728 – 1780) titled Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi.

He committed suicide at Yaguchi village, and after that many terrible things happened in the village. The two warlords Edo and Takezawa 江戸 - 竹沢, who had fought against Yoshiaki also died of a curse.
So to appease his soul the shrine 新田神社 Nitta Jinja was erected.

Nitta Jinja 新田神社



During the Nanboku-cho period, there was a brave and great samurai warrior named Nitta Yoshioki. He was the second son of Nitta Yoshisada. During that time, Japan was divided into North and South and they had repeatedly battled. Nitta Yoshioki fought for the Imperial Southern Court and became famous for being a strong warlord who could win against any kind of large army with his wisdom and bravery. However, he was killed by the enemies through a cowardly attack at the "Yaguchi Ferry." Enemies bored holes in the bottom of Nitta Yoshioki and his retainers' boat and fired off arrows from both banks. (Died on October 10, 1358) The Samurai warriors who engaged in Nitta Yoshioki's killing, was cursed by Yoshiaki's haunt and went crazy and died or saw ghost like fire balls, and lighting hit the place many times. Villagers witnessed these horrific events and decided to build a shrine for Nitta Yoshioki at the site of his death in order for his spirit to rest in peace.

Nitta Shrine is a shrine based on "Goryo Shinko" which is a Japanese belief. Japanese people viewed natural disasters that threatened people and great plagues as the work of evil spirits. Since the power of the spirits is enormously strong, people thought that the evil spirits could adversely save the people from accidents or disasters by enshrining them as a god. The belief was widely spread throughout Japan.



Nitta shrine commemorated the 650th anniversary of its construction in October 2008. The shrine is now well known as the "Good Luck Shrine" and is reverenced by Japanese.

The play "Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi" was originally written for the puppet theater (Bunraku) and staged in the 1st lunar month of 1770 in Edo at the Gekiza. It was adapted to Kabuki many years later and staged for the first time in the 8th lunar month of 1794 at the Kiriza.



- Summary
During the reign of the Emperor Godaigo, the wicked Ashikaga Takauji attempted to dethrone the Emperor and set up a pretender in his place. A great battle was fought on the Plain of Musashino, near what later became Edo. The commander of the Imperial army was Nitta Yoshioki, a famous soldier. He and his troops fought courageously, but were defeated through the treachery of a man whom Yoshioki believed to be his friend. Yoshioki himself was murdered by this same false friend at Yaguchi, where a ferry crossed the Tama River.

The wooden horse is mounted on a box with wheels. It resembles the cart of the King of the Ryukyu empire. When the cart is moved, a device inside brings some strings to produce a sound - pinpin -. At the same time, the horse moves its head.

There were no specialist makers in Okinawa and people made their kites themselves. The Mattaku has four corners. The frame is made in a geometrical pattern.

14 July: Mushaama Festival.
On Hateruma Island, this harvest festival is celebrated during Obon. It features a parade of the local fertility god Miruku and his children (the local children), shishi ("lion") dances, and staff dances.

Hateruma is famous for "Mushaama",
a festival that occurs during the Obon period in Okinawa. Designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and held on July 14th of the lunar calendar, the Mushaama Festival combines Obon festivities with harvest festival ceremonies like the Miruku fertility deity parade. On this special day, islanders offer prayers to their ancestors and pray for their happiness, bountiful crops and big catch.

A pair of male-female dragons is facing each other at the bottom.
The main part is made from paper with five corners, to hold the weapons.
It was a present when a baby boy was born and decorated on the fourth of the fifth lunar month.

The Ryukyuan religion is the indigenous belief system of the Ryukyu Islands.

Noro / Nūru priestesses ノロ（ヌル）
The noro or nūru priestesses are the oldest kaminchu in the Ryukyu Islands. They communicate with, make offerings to, and, at times, channel ancestors, local gods and more powerful deities. Their primary duty is to officiate at communitywide (that is, "official") festivals and rituals.
... According to George Kerr in his Okinawa: the History of an Island People, the noro was at one time a priestess-queen, wielding both political and spiritual power within her community.

kinsuke mari 金助まり / 金助鞠 hand balls with gold-thread decoration

They are a present for the Girl's Festival in March, to hang down from above the Hina Doll exhibition shelf. The smaller one's are about 30 cm, larger one's can be up to 70 cm.
They come with auspicious motives, like the phoenix, peonies, Chinese lions, Pine-Bamboo-Plum 松竹梅, and others.

EDO - money changer ryoogaeya

ryoogaeya　両替屋 money changer

Money was in the form of gold and silver slabs and small change zeni, kozeni 銭、小銭.
The money changers had to weigh the amount of metal to make sure there was no fraud involved.
The exchange rate was fixed by the Bakufu government.
The money changers charged a small sum for their work.




Some dealers for the townspeople were specialized in coins:
銭両替屋
Many shops were concentraded in 室町　Muromachi and 通町　Toricho.
In the year 1718 there were more than 600 people involved in the business.
A few of them were specialized in changing gold and silver :
hon ryoogaeya 本両替屋
Their clients were the feudal lords and the richest of town.

Their most important tools were a set of scales and weight, 分銅　bundoo.

In Kyoto there are four towns that were newly established during the change of town names in 1966 in the area west of Kyoto Station

The deity of matchmaking and marital harmony
Doso-shin (Traveler's Guardian Deity)
is usually placed between streets and villages, hence this deity's function is protection during travel and helping to avoid evil spirits.
Doso Jinja Shrine was rebuilt during the era of Toyotomi　Hideyoshi (late 16th century), but originally it has a quite a long history. Here enshrines Sarutahiko no Mikoto, deity for travel and　Ama　no　Uzume　no　Mikoto, deity for entertainment.
They're a married couple deities, therefore, they have been worshiped for successful matchmaking and marital harmony. "Two figures Doso-shin", there are many Doso-shin statues, but here is a couple statue of a man and a woman snuggled against each other, who are wearing the clothes of Heian period in front of the gate.



It is a small shrine located between the buildings near Kyoto Station. Here you can see a harmonious couple and it makes people smile when they see it.
The benefit of this shrine is for matchmaking, but if you visit with your partner, you can receive a blessing for a long and happy marriage life.
