Reigan 霊巌 Priest Reigan
(1554 － 1641)

檀蓮社雄誉(だんれんじゃゆうよ) Danrenja Yuyo
雄誉霊巌 Yuyo Reigan

Reigan was priest of the 浄土宗 Jodo Sect in the early Edo period.

Third son of 今川氏勝 Imagawa Ujikatsu.
He was born in Suruga (now Shizuoka) and walked all over Japan, building many temples.
His teacher was 貞把 priest Teiha at the temple 生実大巌寺(おゆみだいがんじ) Oyumi Daigan-Ji in Chiba.
One of the most famous is temple Reigan-Ji in Edo, at the island named after him, Reiganjima.
Whith the permission of 徳川家光 Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu he also re-built temple 知恩院 Chion-In in Kyoto.
He also gave lectures in Edo castle.

His written works are 選択集. 精義集 Shogishu and 伝法指南 Denbo Shinan.

Reiganjima 霊巌島 / 霊岸島 Island Reiganjima　
中央区新川 / Shinkawa, Chūō ward

Saint Reigan developed this land between the rivers Kamejimagawa and Sumidagawa and built the temple Reigan-Ji.
At first there were many Samurai estates nearby, but soon a town for the many temple visitors developed.
In 1657 the temple burned down during a huge fire, and was then rebuilt at Fukagawa.

The area of Reiganjima was redeveloped in 1659 by the rich merchant,
河村瑞賢　Kawamura Zuiken (1618 - 1699).
It was accessible by land and many merchants came to live here.

With many merchants of Sake.

Reiganjima Shiomachi　霊巌島　塩町
The estate of Kawamura Zuiken was located here and often called 瑞賢長屋　Zuiken nagaya.
Zuiken was a timber merchant and elevated to Samurai status after the great Meireki fire in 1657. He supervised many projects for canals and flood control in Edo.

Many dealers in pottery lived in Shiomachi. The nearby riverside was called 茶碗河岸　Chawan-kawagishi "Riverside of the tea bowls".

Alltogether there were 16 sub-districts with the name Reiganjima.

The name Reiganbashi 霊岸橋 Reigan-Bridge is still in use today.

zenwanbuchi 膳椀淵 "river pool for trays and bowls"
At the temple 箕輪山霊巌寺 Minowayama Reigan-Ji at the riverpool of 高麗川 Komagawa there lives 大蛇 a huge serpent.
She would grant trays and bowls if people asked her politely, saying the number of visitors then needed to entertain. And of course bring back the tools nicely washed and clean.
When a farmer forgot to bring the things back, the serpent stopped to appear.
After a huge flooding the riverpool was filled with sand. Excarvating it they found the skull of a huge serpent. So nowadays the farmers pray to the serpent at the temple Reigan-Ji.

伊吹山の山の神は「白猪」White Wild Boar from Mount Ibukiyama

. Mount Ibuki 伊吹山 Ibukiyama .

Yamato Takeru was a legendary prince and warrior who traveled a lot and defeated his enemies. However, he met his demise at Mt. Ibuki when he battled an evil god disguised as a white boar.
Yamato Takeru defeated the boar, but not before the boar showered him with poisonous mist. He went to Isame no Shimizu in Samegai whose waters healed him.
Then he went on to Ise, but died soon afterward.

下河辺行平 Shimokobe Yukihira (around 1180) tried to shoot an Inoshishi, the alter-ego of Yamanokami,
but he missed the shot. He was cursed however and died that night.

Shimokobe Soshi Yukihira was a famous archer who taught archery to shogun Minamoto no Yoriie in 1189.
He was a descendent of Fujiwara no Hidezato, a famous archer of the Heian period.

The fortification at Koga may date to the late Heian period or early Kamakura period, and the Azuma Kagami refers to a fortification in Koga built by Shimokobe Yukihira before 1180, although it is not certain if it was in this location.

Yamanokami 山の神 Misaki ミサキ
A member of the Konishi family had killed an Inoshishi and was cursed by Yamanokami.
They had killed an Inoshishi which had destroyed the rice fields in Autumn, dug a shishiana 猪穴 hole to throw in the dead body of a wild boar and were thus cursed.

In 城辺町僧都 Tanabe Sozu there is a place called Shishi Misaki.
During the siege of Mount Heiizan in 1571, many people fled via 上岡 Kamioka. A soozu 僧都 high priest prayed and let them flee when a group of wild boar hunters came by. But a child cried and they were arrested and killed.
The priest and the wild boar had been an incarnation of Yamanokami and so the people now call this event Shishi Misaki.

山の神の祟り the curse of Yamanokami
On January 9, 1900, a hunter went hunting for Inoshishi. He had forgotten that this was 山神祭 the day of the festival for Yamagami.
When he rested at a spot where wild boars usually pass, one wild boar came trotting along. He took aim and wanted to press the trigger, when suddenly the wild boar became invisible and instead 黒牛 a huge black bull, like a monster, stood there. This beast became bigger and bigger. Going crazy with fear, he fled the spot and ran home, but never recovered.

山の神の天罰 divine punishment of Yamanokami
A skilfull hunter almost shot down a wild boar at 富士の裾野 the foot of Mount Fujisan. When the animal came closer, he prayed to Yamanokami to help him win this battle and said it would be the last Inoshishi. And indeed, he could shoot the animal and carry it home. He begun boasting about his "deal with Yamanokami".
But then he went out hunting again and never came home.
When they looked for him, they found him stuck in the snow.
This was the divine punishment of Yamanokami.

Held in the winter months at various shrines.
The prayer groups consisted of people who worked in the mountains. They had offerings twice a year, in early spring to open the season and in early winter to give thanks for the year.

Most festivals are held on the day 16 of a lunar month, one day after the full moon
. izayoi 十六夜 (いざよい) moon on day 16 .
In Spring to welcome Yama no Kami to the fields
In Autumn to see him off to the mountain.
Many rituals involve the offering of 16 rice dumplings.

Sanjinsai 山神祭
People carry home some branches with flames from the festival bonfire - and there has never been a damaging fire in the village.
Even if sparks fall on dry leaves or grass, they will not cause a fire.
If people drink ritual sake and mochi rice cakes on top of the mountain to venerate Yamanokami, they will not get ill all summer.

Yamanokamisama no o-matsuri ヤマノカミ様のお祭り
At the village 南畑 / ミナミハタ Minamihata they have a festival in honor of Yamanokami. They all come together, a furoshiki 風呂敷 cloth wrapper around the head, dancing in the Shrine compound and then fall asleep all together, a custom known as zakone 雑魚寝.
This is also called daki matsuri 抱き祭 festival of embracing each other.
If people do not do it, the growth of asa 麻 hemp will be bad in the coming year.

On the 12th day of the 12th lunar month, they call a Yamabushi 山伏 mountain priest from 山形県小国町 Oguni village in Yamagata. He puts a sacred rope around the festival altar in the home of the tooya 頭屋 "head of the festival" / 当屋. The men of the village are dressed as shrine acolytes, have their eyes blindfold and hold a ritual wand while the Yamabushi recites the 陀羅尼 Darani Sutra. Next the villagers hit the floor with a stick while chanting the 心経 Heart Sutra. Some kind of oracle is performed, asking about the hunting season and other village affairs.
shiratsuke シラツケ or shiramono tsuke シラモノツケ.
This custom has been abolished in the early Taisho period (1912).

Yamanokami Matsuri 山の神祭り
The festival is on the 12th day of the third lunar month. The people celebrating belong to the juunikko ジュウニッコウ（十二講) Junikko.
Everyone in the village takes a rest. If someone dares to go to the forest, he will be punished by Yamanokami.
Going to the forest on the day before the festival, one has to get a purification ritual from a special priest, 太夫様 Tayu sama.
People who do not follow the Junikko rituals are not allowed to go to the forest in spring to gather firewood.

The festival is on the 9th day of February and October.
On these days Yamanokami walks through the forest and counts the trees. If a human is in the forest, he will be counted as a tree and die.
In the 荒金集落 Arakane hamlet, Yamanokami is giving birth, so nodody can go to the mountain. If anyone does, he will meet monsters and become crazy for the rest of his life.

On the day of the festival, the charcoal makers take a rest, come together and offer ゴヘイモチ Goheimochi rice cakes and buri no sashimi ブリの刺身 Sashimi of yellowtail to the Tengu.
Once a man went into the forest to cut a tree, but was hit 睾丸 in the testicles by a branch of a tree and died.

They also should not use tools with blades on this day.

The festival is on the 17th day of March. On this day people do not go to the mountain. If they do and happen to meet Yamanokami, they will have bad luck for the rest of their life.

The day of the festival is the 26th day of the 2nd lunar month.
People bring yamaimo 山芋 yam as offerings, but they are not allowed to whistle in the compound or underground in the coal mines. To kill a dog was forbidden.
There were other taboos concerning the tankoo 炭鉱 coal mines.

Most are just 1 to 4 cm high. They started to be made in the early Meiji period. THey come in a little bag with a bamboo bottom or paper bottom.

- Introduction -

Baby sitting was important in all times. There are many paintings and figures about it.
It was often done by an elder sister. The baby is bound on the back so her hands are free to do some work in the kitchen or the fields.

komori men 子守面 "babysitting faces"
They are much smaller that the mekaeshi faces and have bamboo stick of about 1 meter.
They are also called ororondako おろろん凧.
ororon is the local dialect to pacify a baby. In former times when mothers carried the babies on their back, they would stick the bamboo with the child so it has something to watch.

aoboozu 青坊主 Ao-Bozu "Blue Priest" Yokai monster
When the babysitter was preparing food for the family and bring it to the fields, an Ao-Bozu came into the kitchen and suggested she should hang herself from the neck.
The babysitter tried to ignore the monster, but he grabbed her and made her loose conscience. The baby begun to cry out loud and grandmother from the other room came to pry into the kitchen.
The babysitter had already hung herself from the neck. Grandma cut the rope and placed the girl on the floor, where she came to herself and was saved.

Chiba Eijiroo 千葉栄次郎 Chiba Eijiro (1833 - 1862)
A Samurai of the Bakumatsu period. Master of the 北辰一刀流 Hokushin Ittoryu School of Swordsmanship.
He studied with his father, 千葉周作 Chiba Shusaku, and became so proficient, he was called "Small Tengu" at age 19.

嶺岡浅間の天狗面 Mineoka Asama Tengu Masks
The Mineoka Mountain District ( 嶺岡山地 Mineoka sanchi).
Mount Mineoka Asama is 336 m high. On its North-Eastern side is a temple housing 白滝不動 Shirataki Fudo and the stone Tengu masks are close to it.

The stone Tengu on the way have some strange forms, with a protruding mouth and a nose like a dumpling.
The locals call them 石尊山 Sekison San - Venerable Stone Deities .

There are three sanctuaries for the stone Tengu on the way up to Mount Mineoka Asama.

The belief in Sekison San is known in the Tanzawa mountains, Oyama and at 富士山新五合目小御岳石尊 the 5th station of Mount Fujisan,
石尊様 Sekison Sama are also venerated in Gunma, 甘楽郡 Kanragun 南牧村 Nanmoku village.

高宕山 Takagoyama - 315 m high
From its peak there is a great view over the Kujukutani mountains, Tokyo Bay and all the way to Mount Fujisan.
Now the center of 県立高宕山自然公園, Takagoyama Prefectural Natural Park in South-central Chiba.

Kujukutani is the landscape of the row of mountains seen from the Kujukutani Park down from Shiratori Shrine at the southeastern end of Mt. Kano in Kimitsu City, Chiba Pref. The mountains including Mt. Takago are part of Boso Kyuryo (hills).
This picturesque landscape is composed of deep valleys and overlapping mountain ridgelines, which is selected as one of 500 Charming Spots in Boso. Purple mists at dawn or the after grow of a sunset creates a magnificent scene like an ink painting. Especially beautiful is the sea of clouds trailing along the ridgelines and fading out into the air, which can be seen from the late fall to winter.
A poet, Keigetsu Omachi, described it as "the most wonderful sight in the world." It is said that an artist painter, Kaii Higashiyama, was inspired with this landscape and painted one of his masterpieces, "Afterglow."

Mount Takagoyama is 雨乞いの山 a mountain for rain rituals. At 清滝神社 Kiyotaki Jinja a small shrine the Waterfall Deity is venerated as 高オカミ神 the Mountain Deity.
(The old Kanji for this spelling is rain　雨 on top and below it three open mouths 口. Below it the Kanji for a dragon 龍 - a very complicated Kanji indeed, 高おかみ神.)
Below this shrine is the Kannon hall in a cave, protecting the Tengu masks.
Once upon a long time, Minamoto no Yoritomo had to flee from 小田原の石橋山 the lost battle in Odawara and took refuge here. Yoritomo stayed in the Kannon cave (高宕観音 Takago Kannon) and prayed for the return of his good luck and victory. On the pillars of this cave-hall hang the Tengu masks.

高宕山 The Kanji in the middle, 宕, refers to the cave, and this reminded people of the famous 愛宕山 Atagoyama in Kyoto.
Maybe the Tengu from Atagoyama even came here to visit ? ??

観音堂の天狗面 The Tengu Masks of the Kannon-Hall

Iizuna temple is known as the 天狗の寺"Tengu Temple".
People come here to pray fpr fire prevention, safety on the sea, prosperous business and health.
The temple treasure is a wood carving of about 4 m length and 1 m hight by the famous carver 波の伊八 Nami no Ihachi.
It shows 牛若丸と天狗 Ushiwakamaru and the Tengu.
At the 仁王門 Nio-Mon entrance gate is a carving of a Tengu riding the waves.

Once there were two brothers, but the younger brother suddenly went off and was lost.
Afterwards a typhoon begun to blow and from the top of a cedar tree the voice of the man was heard "I am back, I am back!"
He had become a guhin 狗賓 Tengu and is still living to our day.

Someone cut the weeds below the 天狗の腰かけ松 Pine of the Tengu. The Tengu got angry, abducted him and when the man came back, he had a bad injury.

Aoso sama 青麻様 "Green Hemp Deity"
The protecting deity of the 鹿間家 Shikama family is Aoso Sama, said to be a Tengu. He protects from 中風 palsy. Its annual rituals are on the first of April and September.
The offering is red rice and never pumpkin or leek, since he does not like these vegetables.

A child once saw a Tengu on the bridge of 東茂原 Higashi Mobara. Soon after the child got ill and died.

A Tengu once shape-shifted and worked at a temple in I市原 chihara town. When the priest asked him to get some Tofu he flew all the way to Kyoto to buy it.

Many Tengu sometimes came to the 権現森 Gongenmori Park and made music with flutes and drums.
(Gongen Mori is a hill in Chiba and is nearby are Nagarayama and Rokujizō. 権現森自然公園.)

At 滝田 Takita there is 天狗の通り道 a Tengu road, where they pass with the most strange sounds when flying past. It is a rather deep forest and sometimes the forest workers, who stay over night in a small hut, can feel it moving and shaking.

A villager from 八束村 Yatsukamura village has seen a Tengu in the mountain forest, reading a book.

On mount 伊予ケ岳 Iyogatake in the village 平群村 Hegurimura near 岩井 Iwai there lived a Tengu.
The warden of the small shrine could tell his temper: On good days the water bucket was filled by the Tengu, on bad days it was empty.

Mount Iyogatake (伊予ヶ岳 Iyoga-take) is a mountain on the border of the city of Minamibōsō, Chiba Prefecture, with an altitude of 336.6 m (1,104 ft).
Mount Iyogatake is at the west of the Mineoka Mountain District of the Bōsō Hill Range, in close proximity to Mount Tomi. The mountain takes its name from its resemblance to Mount Ishizuchi in Ehime Prefecture, formerly in Iyo Province.
Mount Iyogatake is one of the few mountains in the Bōsō Hill Range with steep rock cliff. It can be easily climbed within 40 minutes. The entrance to the path of the mountain is between Heguri Elementary School and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine. Mount Iyogatake offers a clear view of the other mountains of the Bōsō Hill Range and Tokyo Bay, and on clear days Mount Fuji and the Izu Islands are also visible.
Mount Iyogatake and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine are associated with a legend of a tengu, a supernatural creature found in Japanese folklore.

Sometimes the Tengu came down to the village to pester the farmers, steal the rice from their barn or the vegetables from their fields. But the villagers feared the curse of this Tengu and could do nothing. The Tengu took advantage of their fear and one day threw a letter into a farmhouse:
"Tonight at the full moon, bring the most beautiful girl of Heguri village to the Shrine 天神社 Tenjin Sha at the foot of Mount Iyogatake. If you do not obey, I will use my 天狗の団扇 Tengu fan and blast away your whole village in a storm!"
The farmer was struck with fear and went to the village headman for advice. He headman was very clever and said:
"If the Tengu will use his fan, we can use our own fan to teach him a lesson!"
He made a fan three times bigger as the one used by the tengu, climbed Mount Iyogatake and showed it to the Tengu. The Tengu wanted to have it and exchanged it for his own.
When he next tried to use the new fan to fly down to the village, he fell from the mountain - he had lost his 神通力 magical power.

Another legends tells of this vicious Tengu feared by all villagers, who was just friends with one man,
定さん Sada san. Sada san was the second son of a rich farmer. Sada san had once picked up the fan of the Tengu on the foot of the mountain and brought it back. The Tengu was very greatful and invited him for a delicious meal.
As you know, a Tengu needs his fan to be able to fly around in the sky.
The man, who knew the others did not like the Tengu, was glad he had given the fan back and received a meal instead, so the two became friends. The man went up to the Tengu's living quarters many times to eat and tell all in the village about his new friend.
Thus he helped to make the Tengu quite famous . . . to our day, it seems.
Once the Tengu boasted:
"I can fly to all the way Shikoku to 像頭山 Mount Zuzu-San and the temple at 金琴平山 Konpira-San and come back in no time at all!"
Sada doubted this, but the Tengu wielded his fan and slowly disappeared in the sky. Since he did not come back, Sada san went home to sleep. When he opened the shutters next morning he saw an amulet from the famous temple at Konpira San on his doorstep. This must have been placed there by his friend, the Tengu.

Once upon a time, the Tengu from Iyogatake abducted an acolyte, the son of 小松民部正寿 Komatsu Minbu Masatoshi, from the temple 小松寺 Komatsu-Ji in 千倉 Chikura and much later they found the boy at Iyogatake.
Much later.
Once in summer during the rainy season, villagers were cleaning up the mountain. When they emptied a trash box on the wayside, a large mukade ムカデ centipede came out of it.

At the top of the mountain is a Shinto sanctuary dedicated to
少比名命 Sukunahiko no Mikoto.

Stories about a Tengu living on this mountain date back to 921 and the curse of Sugawara no Michizane.

This shrine was founded in 1353, when collecting money for the 北野天満宮 Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

Later in 1808, it was rebuilt by priest 法印宥弘.
It was the protector shrine of the 9 villages comprizing Heguri, but during the Meiji restauration it lost its power.
