Amanuma district 天沼 "heavenly swamp"

Amanuma, 杉並区 Suginami ward

From the first to the third sub-district. 天沼一丁目 - 天沼三丁目.

The name refers to a pond located at the third sub-district, the famous
Amanuma Benten-Ike 天沼弁天池

During the Edo period, 天沼村 Amanuma village had 73 houses, at the beginning of the Meiji period there were 77.
It was a countryside with forests, foxes and badgers like in the 武蔵野 Musashino plain.
In 1635, it belonged to the famous shrine 日枝神社 Hie Jinja.
The rivers 妙正寺川 Myoshojigawa and 桃園川 Momozonogawa flow through this area.

In 1889, together with the villages of 高円寺村・馬橋村・阿佐ヶ谷村・田端村・成宗村 it became 東多摩郡杉並村 Higashi-Tama district, Suginami village.
In 1891 荻窪駅 the station of Ogikubo was built.

Another theory states that the plain was used since the Heian peroid for horse training, then written 乗潴「あまぬま」. cho 潴 means swamp.

Amanuma is located in the center of Suginami ward. The main street is 天沼本通り Ananuma Hondori.
In the West is the old 青梅街道 Ome Kaido Road. This road was used to transport stone material for the construction of the Edo castle. The road goes on to Kofu in Yamanashi.

Kuniyama no Shinji 国山の神事 Shinto ritual at Kuniyama village

- quote -
n the past, the Kuniyama no Shinji Ceremony was held on four nights: February 3rd, 4th, and 6th at a layperson's home and February 7th at the Hachioji Shrine for the main ceremony. However, today it is only held on January 3rd every 4 years at the shrine. (To be held next in 2021)
The ritual of Kuniyama no Shinji was previously called naruwai ナルワイ and tagayashi タガヤシ. At the beginning of the year, partakers would simulate the farm work carried out throughout the year and pray for an abundant harvest for that year. The ritual is a reenactment broken down into 3 parts.
The first is a reenactment of the beginning of farm work until the planting of seedlings.
The second is the taking of seedlings from the seedling bed and planting them,
and the third is the harvest.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, tree branches that have been hung from the shrine ceiling in advance are all pulled down at once. It is said that the branches piled on the floor will bring about a rich harvest of rice crop.

池の山の神 Yamanokami from the Pond
About 600 years ago, there was a long drought and famine.
This was the curse of Yamanokami from the Pond, as a Shaman told them.
The villagers had to make a human sacrifice to the Lord of the Pond, a Dragon, every year and this time a young man named ハンニャ Hannya was selected.
On the 18th day of the 9th lunar month he was placed into a 駕籠 palanquin. Before he entered, he danced
Hannya no mai ハンニャの舞 the Hanya dance.
"If the dragon of the pond can dance like this, he will not eat me. From now on I will come here and dance every year."
This was the beginning of a dance ritual in the village.

- - - - -

On the 16th day of the first and 12th lunar month, Yamanokami walks around the mountain forest to inspect the trees.
On this day humans are not allowed to go there and cut trees.

- - - - -

Sometimes when walking in the mountain, people feel a sudden dizziness, chill, or headache.
This is a vision of Yamanokami who might have caught a cold himself.

Saigoo Takamori, Saigō Takamori 西郷隆盛 Saigo Takamori
(23 January 1827/28 — 24 September 1877)

- quote
Saigō Takamori (Takanaga) (西郷 隆盛 (隆永)
(January 23, 1828 – September 24, 1877) was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history, living during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. He has been dubbed the last true samurai. He was born Saigō Kokichi (西郷 小吉), and received the given name Takamori in adulthood.
He wrote poetry under the name Saigō Nanshū (西郷 南洲).
His younger brother was Gensui The Marquis Saigō Tsugumichi.
.....
- Satsuma Rebellion (1877)
- Legends about Saigō
Multiple legends sprang up concerning Saigō, many of which denied his death. Many people in Japan expected him to return from British Raj India or Qing-dynasty China or to sail back with Russian Tsesarevich Nicholas to overthrow injustice. It was even recorded that his image appeared in a comet near the close of the 19th century, an ill omen to his enemies. Unable to overcome the affection that the people had for this paragon of traditional samurai virtues, the Meiji Era government pardoned him posthumously on February 22, 1889.

Rokubu known by their names

The motives for the Rokubu pilgrimage were manifold, often praying for a favor to the deities, healing of disease for themselves or family members, praying for guidance of a dead loved one to go up to the Buddhist paradise.
Most pilgrims remained anonymous, but some became famous on the way and had special halls erected.

Moriichi Jizo was built by village people to enshrine the Rokubu called Moriichi 森市.
Moriichi stayed several years on the way of the pilgrim and was respected by the people.
When he felt his end would be near, he decided to be buried alive to become an "eternal Buddha" and thus continue to pray for the prosperity and safety of the village people.

義安寺の六部堂 - A hall for a Rokubu pilgrim at 義安寺 Gian-Ji, Matsuyama, Ehime.

This hall is to enshrine the Rokubu named 友兵 Tomohei
He was a rich farmer and had a happy family life - all went well until his wife died of leprosy. He had to bring up his daughter おしげ O-Shige all by himself, but the girl at age 15 got the same disease as her mother. Tomohei bought all kinds of expensive medicine and prayed to the deities, but the girl did not get better. He sold all his fields, put 66 copies of the Lotus Sutra in a pilgrim's backpack and became a 六十六部 Rokujurokubu, walking away with his daughter.

On their way he was told that the hot spring at 道後 Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama would heal. So they went to Matsuyama. By now the daughter was 19 years. But the hot spring did not heal, her face became worse and she had to shield away from human looks.
She died on August 26 in 1806.
When Tomohei came back to his home, he was filled with grief.
He died on the May 18 in 1818.

Despite his deep religious faith he had lost his family. Tomohei died, saying:
"It is no use praying to Kami or Buddha for the safety of yourself and your family.
Pray to me instead."
This temple is called お六部さん O-Rokubu San by the local people.

hebi 蛇,kaeru 蛙 the serpent and the frog
Once a grandfather observed a serpent trying to swallow a frog. He told her:
"I give you one of my three daughters as a wife if you let the frog go!"
So the youngest daughter had to go, but because of the son-in-law being a snake, she got more and more ill.
Just then a Rokubu stayed over night at the home and told them:
"If the son-in-law can climb up to the nest of a sagi 鷺 heron, (and get some eggs for the girl to eat), the girl will be saved."
So he took on his real features of a snake, climbed up a tree and tried to get some eggs from the nest. But there he was caught by the heron and the bird swallowed the snake.
The Rokubu was indeed the frog who had been helped in the past by Grandfather.

A similar story is told in Yamagata about the young man being eaten by

hebi 蛇 serpent - kaapa かあぱ Kappa
Once upon a time a vicious serpent (or maybe a Kappa) lived in the river and many children lost their lives.
The villagers asked a Rokubu what to do about this.
The Rokubu told them to make mochi 餅 rice cakes on the last day of the year, give them to children and have them throw into the river. This would protect the children.
And indeed, from that time on, no more water accidents happened at the river.

脛立 /フッタチ / 経立 Futtachi, "old animal Yokai monster"
In a certain family they had many children born, but they all died soon after birth.
A Rokubu told them:
The old hen of the family had transformed into a Futtachi. The hen cursed all the people of the family, who had taken her precious eggs and eaten them, preventing her from having children. This was her revenge.

source : 2013 倉嶋圭

A Futtachi is an old grumpy animal turned Yokai. It can be a hen or a monkey, a fish, dog or any other animal.
It becomes very huge in size and can easily revenge itself on the people.
Futtachi are common Yokai in Aomori and Iwate.
They appear in the 遠野物語 Tono Monogatari legends of Iwate.
... "a futsutachi is any animal that becomes a larger, more powerful youkai by living to an advanced age."

In 安家村 Akka mura there is a legend about a Fish Futtachi.
Once upon a time, there came a beautiful young man to the home visiting the daughter, every night. The neighbours got suspicious and thought this must be a Futtachi. They advised the daughter to wash the feet of the man with water where soy beens had been boiled in.
She did as told and suddenly the young man felt unwell and hurried away. The next morning she went to the beach and found a dead tara タラ cod fish.
