kitsune 狐 fox
In Sendai there lived a foot soldier called Katsumata Yazaemon. He was famous for catching foxes.
Once he was at the foot of 榴ヶ岡 Tsutsujigaoka along the Azuma Kaido. There lived anold fox who took the chicken from farmers and played tricks to travelers.
On orders from the local government Yazaemon had to kill this fox.
Yazaemon was in mourning for his late father (and there fore should not do this), but the governor came many times. Yozaemon consulted with his friend, a priest who told him he should not kill during the 49 daya after this father's death.
The priest then took him out for a drink and ate quite a lot, much more than usual. Yazaemon found this suspicious, went outside and placed a trap near the door.
When the priest went home, he got caught in the trap.
The fox/priest had tried to out-do a human, but was caught none the less.

Deity Shinpachi Myojin
Shinpachi was the second son of a farmer working for the Samurai Shiroishi Unsaburo. He worked diligently.
The wife of his older brother was quite a villain and was bad to her stepfather.
Around 1815, his sister-in-law prepared 大師講の団子 dumplings for the Daishi rituals and put some needles in them.
When Shinpachi offered a dumpling to his father, the needle stuck out. The sister-in-law went to the daikan 代官 assistant deputy governor and accused Shinpachi for having tried to kill his father. Shinpachi tried to cover for his sister-in-law, did not tell the truth and was executed as punishment.
Before he died he said: "If my head falls to the north when cut off, I am innocent and will curse you!"
Soon after that the family of Shinpachi fell into ruin.
The villagers erected a memorial stone for him along the Iwadeyama Highway near the river 花川 Hanakawa with the inscription "Shinpachi Myojin".

Amida with a cut breast
Once upon a time
A priest from the temple 充国寺 Jukoku-Ji in Aoba was on his way back from Kyoto along the Kiso Highway. Suddenly a robber attacked him, but a tree at the roadside fell down and killed the robber. The priest could not forget the piercing look of hatred of the man. When he was back at his temple, a baby had been born to a family of his parish and he went there for a blessing. He picked up the baby and when he looked at his face, it had exactly the expression of the robber on the highway. The priest was so afraid, he killed the baby.
Therefore he was to be executed and take to 七北田刑場 the execution ground in Nanakita. When the executioners came to pick him up, all the 小僧 little temple acolytes cried as they sent him off. They went back to the main hall . . . as there was a lound sound of something crashing.
The statue of Amida had a cut right through the breast !

source : legend.main.jp/50-aobaku-008-munewariamida...
They sent the statue back to Kyoto to have it repaired, but when it was brought back the breast was cut again.
The statue could not be repaired and so it remained cut.

- quote -
Amida's Riven Breast
R. Keller Kimbrough
Amida's Riven Breast (Amida no munewari) is classified as a ko-jōruri shōhon, but is also known to have been performed as sekkyō by Tenma Hachidayū and to be thematically consistent with the sekkyō of its time. This Buddhist tale is divided into six acts, the third act of which contains a battle scene. In Amida no munewari, the siblings Teirei and Tenju lose their parents at the ages of five and seven. Then when the brother Teirei is ten years old, he proposes to his elder sister that they sell themselves as slaves to a rich man. Tenju is eventually saved by her Buddhist devotion.
The story emphasizes the necessity of dan haramitsu practice of engaging religious professionals.

Kikuna Shrine, Kanagawa

6-5-14 / 6 Chome-5-14 Kikuna, Kohoku Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa

There were originally five shrines in an area of Sugiyama Jinja Sugiyama Shrine, which is now in 菊名町公園 Kikuna Town Park.
The new Kikuna Shrine is famous for its 24 paintings of chrysanthemums on the ceiling.
kiku 菊 means Chrysanthemum.

EDO - Arakicho district Shinjuku Tsunokami

[ . BACK to DARUMA MUSEUM TOP . ]
. Famous Places and Power spots of Edo
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Arakichoo 荒木町 Arakicho, Araki district
Shinjuku, no sub-districts
between Yotsuya Sanchome Station of the Marunouchi Line and the Tsunokamizakadori Avenue.
Founded in 1872 as 四谷荒木町 Yotsuya Arakicho.

Before the Edo period, this area was a wilderness on the coast, called
Shiofumi no Sato or
Shiohi no Sato.

There used to be the slope 荒木坂 Arakizaka and an alley named Araki Yokocho.
Araki Masahane (1662 - 1732) lived here.
Masahane is related to the story of the 47 Ronin and Asano Takumi no Kami.
. 47 Ronin and the Chushingura 47

The slope Arakizaka was later re-named to Tsunokamizaka.
There was also a bridge named 津の守橋 Tsunokamibashi over the 玉川上水 Tamagawa Canal. This bridge is now called 北沢橋 Kitazawabashi.

During the Edo period, the estate of 美濃国高須藩 the Daimyo of Takasu Han, 松平義行, Matsudaira Yoshiyuki (1656 - 1715), was located here.
Tsunokamizaka is also related to Yoshiyuki, who's title was 摂津守 Settsu no Kami
This name has been shortened to "Tsu no kami".

Settsu Province (摂津国 Settsu no kuni) was a province which today comprises the southeastern part of Hyōgo Prefecture and the northern part of Osaka Prefecture.
It was also referred to as Tsu Province (津国 Tsu no kuni) or Sesshū (摂州).
- quote wikipedia -

In the estate of Yoshiyuki was a waterfall and a large pond. The terrain was rough, mountainous and steep.
Once Tokugawa Ieyasu came here to wash muchi 策(ムチ)the whip for his horse,
so the pond was also called 策の池 Muchi no Ike.
In the Meiji period, the estate became a public park and many eateries and hanamachi 花街 pleasure quarters were established.

.......................................................................

- quote
Today, Arakicho has many high quality restaurants and is mostly known as a gourmet town, or a place for food connoisseurs. However, during the later part of the Showa era about 50 years ago, it was more famous as a drinking area. People working at TV, newspaper and other media companies in the nearby neighborhoods of Yotsuya and Ichigaya would often unwind in Arakicho after work. Most of those companies have since moved to new locations but all these small bars and drinking spots still remain.
... This long, straight street is called Sugidaimon Dori
"Sugi" stands for cedar and in earlier times this was a cedar tree-lined road. Now it is lined with ornamental lamp posts, giving the street its cosy night atmosphere. The slope beyond the end of the street (ending at Yasukuni Dori Avenue) used to be covered by a cedar forest and the trees were used as raw material for building ships. That area is called today Funamachi 船町 and could be translated as Ship Town. "Daimon" means Big Gate and although the street name doesn't haven't any specific meaning in Japanese one can imagine that it was used to transport the wood to the shipyards. ...
... Sharikimon Dori Street
... Don't forget to glance up occasionally – Arakicho has few high rise buildings but some bars are hidden on the 2nd floor. After the magic bar Kakurenbo on the left (notice that the entrance is just a hole in the wall), take the very narrow alley to the right. You'll emerge opposite the small Arakicho park on the S-shaped Sharikimon Dori Street "Shariki" means a cart pulled by a person, and "mon" means gate.
... At the start of the 18th century, the area that would eventually be known as Arakicho town (officially in 1872), was originally the residence of the Japanese feudal lord ("daimyo") Matsudaira, and thus this road was used by carts bringing supplies to his home. An interesting fact is that Matsudaira happens to be the birth name of Tokugawa leyasu, who was the first to unify Japan in 1600 and the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Tokugawa was a name that he took in 1567 (when he was 24 years old) and which the successive shoguns used till the Meiji restoration in 1868. The other members of the clan continued to use the Matsudaira surname, and thus the Matsudaira family living in Arakicho were related to the first shogun of Japan (more about him later).
- - - - - The Pond of the Whip
On Sharikimon Dori Street, head left and walk past the bar C-shell, another great place for drinks in the evening. Take the next street right and you'll see a descending staircase on the left. Before going down, glance over your shoulder and notice that the connecting alley is also paved with flagstones. The staircase curves first right then left – we are now entering what remains of the old garden that was part of the Matsudaira residence. At the bottom, you'll find a shrine, Tsunokami Benzaiten (津の神弁財天), and a small pond, Muchinoike 策の池, or pond of the whip. According to the legend, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Japan's first shogun, would go hawking in the garden grounds and would wash his horse whip in this pond. Historical maps show that the pond used to be much larger.
After the end of the feudal system in 1868, the residence was no longer inhabited by a daimyo, and the garden was opened up to the public. Around the edge of the pond many tea houses were built, and guests could be entertained by geisha. At its peak there were up to 200 geisha working in Arakicho, which was then called Arakicho Hanamachi 花街 ("hana" means flower), or geisha district. This period lasted until the middle of the 20th century. Eventually all the tea houses closed and small bars and restaurants opened in their place. Nowadays there are no more tea houses or geisha in Arakicho. ...

In the nineteenth century the Shinto shrine Tsunokami Benzaiten 津の守弁財天. located in the popular Shinjuku ward (新宿区), had in its garden this small body of water with waterfalls in which the inhabitants of Tokyo could find refreshment during the hot summer days

Akiha san Hongu Akiha Jinja
Harunocho Ryoke

- quote -
The Akihasan Hongū Akiha Jinja (秋葉山本宮秋葉神社) is a Shinto shrine in Tenryū-ku, Hamamatsu (the former town of Haruno in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan). The shrine is located near the summit of Mount Akiha, on the southern slopes of the Akaishi Mountains. It is the head shrine of the 800 Akiha shrines around the country.
The main festival of the shrine
is held annually over three nights in December, and features ceremonies using huge flares and other fireworks.
The primary kami of Akibasan Hongū Akiba Jinja is the Hinokagutsuchi-no-Okami (火之迦具土大神), the kami associated with protection against fires. During the Edo period, this kami was popularly called the Akiha Gongen (秋葉権現) and was identified with Kannon Bosatsu under the Shinbutsu shūgō system of combined Buddhism and Shinto.
... Per shrine tradition, the Akibasan Hongū Akiha Jinja was established in 701 as a Buddhist temple by the famed priest Gyōki. It was named Akiha-dera (秋葉寺) from a poem written by Emperor Saga in 709. During the Heian period it became a center for the Shugendō cult and was associated with the Shingon sect, although much of its subsequent history is uncertain.

Hijiyama Highway

Mount Hijiyama is a small mountain in Hiroshima, about 70 m high.
Hiroshima was established on the delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto. Hiroshima Castle was quickly built, and in 1593 Mōri moved in. Terumoto was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara. The winner of the battle, Tokugawa Ieyasu, deprived Mōri Terumoto of most of his fiefs, including Hiroshima and gave Aki Province to Masanori Fukushima, a daimyō who had supported Tokugawa.
From 1619 until 1871, Hiroshima was ruled by the Asano clan.
