Ankokuji 安国寺 Ankoku-Ji, Hiroshima

広島市東区牛田新町 / Ushita-shinmachi, Higashi-ku, Hiroshima city

The temple was founded in 1433.
During repair work a plate was found with the name of the priest 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei from the year 1588.
The shooroo 鐘楼 bell tower has the form of a hakamakoshi 袴腰, like a skirt or Hakama trousers of men, with a white painting. This type of tower dates back to the Heian period.

During the Edo period, the temple came under the regime of the Zen sect with 寺号 the temple name 宥珍 Yuchin.
A statue of Fudo Myo-O became the center of worship and the name 不動院 Fudo-In became popular.

The Copper Bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple

The large temple bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple in Hiroshima City is said to have been brought from Korea
by 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei, who was a daimyo and priest serving for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Mori Motonari during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1598).
It is an excellent artistic work of the early Goryeo dynasty (918-1932). The bell is 1.6 m tall and 65 cm in diameter. Beautiful arabesque designs are cast on relief on the upper and lower parts and four heavenly maidens are on the main body. The sitting image of Bosatsu is also carved in relief on the hitting mark (tsukiza), on which the name "Soshin Bosatsu" is inscribed. The bell was designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 1899.

. Inari 稲荷と伝説 Legends about the Fox Deity .
A fox shape-shifted into a Samurai and called himself 蛻庵 Setsuan. He became a retainer of 諏訪侯 the Lord of Suwa. When they found out about his real identity, the fox-samurai had to go.
He was allowed to live at 興禅寺 the temple Kozen-Ji
Once he had to go to on an errand to 安国寺 the temple Ankoku-Ji, but he was found out and killed.
Soon after an epidemic broke out and people thought it was the curse of the fox.
They build a small shrine in the temple compound and venerated and appeased his soul there
at the 蛻庵稲荷 Setsuan Inari Shrine.

Once late at night, someone knocked at the door of the temple hall of 安国寺 Ankoku-Ji. When the priest opened, there was nobody.
This happened many times in a row from that day on. Once the priest was fast and opened the moment he heard the voice. He saw a Mukina jump away over the roof.

Jokoji Tonosama Kaido Highway

A part of this Highway is called

- Tonosama Kaido 殿様街道 "Highway of the Lord" -
It starts in 砂川 Sunagawa（尾張旭市 Owari-Asahi city) and ends at the gate of the temple Joko-Ji.
This part is about 13 km long.
In the Edo period it was also called
定光寺道 Jokoji Michi - Jokojido
or
御成道 Onarido
Since the Meiji period, the name Tonosama Kaido became popular.

The grave of the first Daimyo of the 尾張藩 Owari domain, 徳川義直 Tokugawa Yoshinao, is at the temple Joko-Ji
and the road was used for regular temple visits.
Gengei koobyoo 源敬公廟 Genkei Kobyo is the name of Yoshinao's grave.

Tokugawa Yoshinao 徳川義直, (1601 – 1650)
was a Japanese daimyō of the early Edo period.
Born the ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu with his concubine, Okame no Kata.
His childhood name was Gorōtamaru (五郎太丸). While still a young child, he was appointed leader of first the fief of Kofu in Kai Province and later the fief of Kiyosu in Owari Province. In 1610, he was appointed leader of the Owari Domain (present-day Nagoya), one of the most important regions in the country, thus founding the Owari-Tokugawa house. A holder of the 2nd court rank, junior grade (ju-ni-i), he had the title of dainagon (major counselor).
During the Kan'ei era (1624-44)
he had a kiln constructed at the corner of the Ofuke enceinte (Ofukemaru) of Nagoya Castle and invited potters from Seto to make pottery there. This became to be known Ofukei ware.
Yoshinao began learning Shinkage-ryū from Yagyū Hyōgonosuke at age 16, and was named the 4th sōke at age 21.
His remains were cremated and laid to rest at his mausoleum in Jōkō-ji (Seto).

Grandmother from the tea stall at the pass 夕立山の峠 along the 殿様街道 Tonosama Kaido closed her shop and went home every evening. And always a wolf came and followed her until she was safe at home. When she reached home, she gave one mochi 餅 rice cake to the wolf in gratitude. When the wolf left, she was not allowed to look back at him.

His local opponent was
Aterui / Akuro-o / Acro-o アテルイ / 阿久呂王 / 阿弖流爲 / 悪路王 Akuro (? - 802)
At the time of Tamuramaro the Emishi 蝦夷 inhabitants of Northern Japan were seen as oni 鬼 demons
and Akuro was their king.
After Tamuramaro had killed Akuro, he transported his head to Kyoto, hence many legends on the way.

阿久呂王 Akuro had been pursued as an Oni demon and came to 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m).
His enemy shot an arrow at him near Sendai and killed the demon.
This place is now called 鬼首 Onikobe.

People come to this mound to get relief from illness of the head.
The head of Akuro was on the way to be carried to Kyoto, when the carrier passed here and the head became so heavy,

宮城県玉造郡鳴子町　鬼首地区 - In the town of Naruko there is one area called Onikobe.

The Demon had been chased and crossed the Onitoge pass, but was found out and killed at the field now called
鬼打田 Oniuchida. His cut-off head flew away and fell down at a place called
Onikobe in Naruko.
This is now the famous ski resort Narukoonsen Onikobe Ōsaki in Miyagi

He had been killed at Esashi, Iwayado, by Tamuramaro. His head flew off to Onikobe in Tamatsukuri,

坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro had captured the leader of the Emishi and cut off his head at 箆岳山 Mount Nonodakeyama.
The head begun to cry and fly off to the Western sky. When it fell down, a hot spring begun to blow up (fuki-age), hence the name.

All of a sudden the Demon Deity came to live on 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m), hunted for humans and ate them.
The Emperor ordered a member of the Tamura clan to drive him out. He chased him all the way to Sendai and finally killed him. The place is now known as 鬼首 Onikobe.

The Nagao Kaido wasonce known as the Yamato Kaido, a route connecting Nara and Sakai. A small shrine houses a Jizo guardian in front of the Osaka-Izumi-Sennan Highway along with a slone monument with an historical inscription. Another monument in front of Hochigai Shrine is inscribed with a tanka poem from the Manyoshu.

The Kishu Kaido flourished as an Edo-period trade route between the domains of Kishu and Senshu. At the eastern end of the route there are many rows of old houses and storefronts, and in the shopping district in Zaimokucho-Higashi can be found old signposts indicating the directions of destinations such as Osaka.

the shrine grounds are located at the site of the ruins of the 18th Japanese emperor's palace.
According to the Kojiki - the oldest existing Japanese historical text - a palace once stood on these grounds. They were the location of the last capital of the Kawachi Dynasty. Scholars say the Kawachi Dynasty was a peaceful time marked by abundant harvests of grains where people lived in happy abundance. With a number of place names in the area such as Mt. ichiya no matsu 一夜の松 pine tree growing in one night
In 1439, the sacred pine tree of the Sumiyoshi shrine started to bend down and probably fall on another Shrine building, so it had to be cut down.
The next morning, oh wonder, the tree was there straight and high as before.

This shrine is dedicated to the gods of
底筒男命 Sokotsutsu-no-kami, 中筒男命 Nakatsutsu-no-kami and 表筒男命 Uwatsutsu-no-kami
and it was officially designated in ancient time as one of the high ranked shrines. It was once admired as the greatest shrine of Chikuzen area (northern part of the present Fukuoka prefecture). The surrounding area was originally a cape at the mouth of Nakagawa River flowing into Hakata Bay. It was worshipped as a tutelary shrine of navigation. The gods were also worshipped as gods of Japanese poem (waka) and ancient famous poet Sogi visited this shrine to pay respect to the god.
The straight shaped roof of the main hall of this shrine is one of the specific features of ancient architectural style, very contrastive to the later Buddhist style. The main hall is designated as a national treasure and the copper axe and sword of the shrine are designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.

At 住吉神社 Sumiyoshi Shrine there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet. It shows a man with shaven front hair sakayaki 月代 "like a moon", a hachimaki 鉢巻 headband and a large sword at the side. He sits next to an Oni and they play a game of kubihiki 首引き "neck pulling" in a contest of strength, a kind of "Neck tug of war".

This stone is located in front of the 住吉神社 Sumiyoshi Shrine.
Normally there is no water in its holes, but on 土用に入る日 the first day of Doyo, water begins to accumulate.

Near 茶屋村 Chaya village along the Sumiyoshi Highway there was a huge mouse, almost as big as a cat, that would jump out and bite people. Small dogs were quite afraid of this beast.
People eventually killed it and buried it, placing a stone on the grave. There is now 鼠の塚 a stone mound for the mouse in the graveyard of Sumiyoshi Shrine.

Binbogami 貧乏神
Once a man heard footsteps at night and went out to have a look, there was a boozu 坊主 priest and he asked him:
"Where are you going?"
He replied "貧乏神 Binbogami" and the man was fast to repeat "Binbogami".
Later the priest came back again. This time he was invited into the home with great hospitality and became the Fuku no Kami of the family.

Minamoto no Yoshitomo, the father of Yoritomo and Yoshitsune, was killed here and his head washed in the pond.
This legendary pond is said to turn red before unlucky events.

Hossho Daizenni no rei 法性大禅尼の霊 the spirit of the nun Hossho Daizen-Ni
Around 1395, the spirit of the nun Daizen-Ni, the daughter of Hojo Tokiyori (1227 - 1263), who had built the temple 法性寺 Hojo-Ji, had come to the temple.
She told the priest:
"In a former life I was a woman who had gone crazy, my hair stood on end and my voice was hoarse. I lost blood from my womb and cried in pain."
To appease her soul, the priest spent a period of prayers, and prayed to 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu. An old man appeared and told him to go to a clear lake in the Eastern direction. There it begun raining flowers from the sky and the Sutra 血盆経 Ketsubon Kyo appeared.
He begun to read it aloud and the soul of the nun was appeased.

is an apocryphal Mahayana sutra of Chinese origin. The earliest version of this text was likely composed around the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th.
- Overview
The Blood Bowl Sutra describes how Maudgalyāyana, disciple of the Buddha famous for his supernatural or magical powers, descended to hell to save his mother. He finds her in the company of women who are tormented by the hell wardens and are forced to drink their own menstrual blood. They are punished like this because the blood produced by their bodies pollutes the ground and offends the earth gods, or ends up in rivers from which the water to make tea for holy men is drawn.
- Japan
The belief that women descend to the underworld shortly after childbirth has been present in Japanese folklore for quite some time. Story 9 of Volume 3 in the Nihon Ryōiki tells of how a woman died in labor and went to hell.
Despite the Ōjōyōshū being one of the most important texts to describe hell, it bears no mention of the Blood Pool Hell. It is possible that the nature of hell as presented in the Blood Bowl Sutra was not introduced to Japanese religious thought until the Muromachi period. At Yama-dera temple, there is a pool called the "Blood Pond." It is said that at one time, the Blood Bowl Sutra was used for dedicatory services to women who had died in childbirth. A similar ceremony was likely held at Gangō-ji. Until relatively recently, ceremonies surrounding the Blood Bowl Sutra were also held at Shōsen-ji temple. Believers would enclose a copy of the Blood Bowl Sutra in women's coffins in order to save them from being condemned to the Blood Pond Hell. A copy of the sutra discovered at Saidai-ji appears to have been used in a similar fashion.

Chinoike 血の池
In the town of Takase there is a rock with the footprint of akago 赤子 a baby.
Once upon a time, from the top of mount 鬼がうすの山 / 鬼ヶ臼山 Onigausuyama a horse and a baby came flying down.The horse was quite exhausted, fell down near the small shrine, hit its head on the rock and died. But the baby stood on top of the rock, leaving its footprints to our day.
From the rock, in the form of a horse head, water like tears came floating down. The water from this well is said to cure zutsuu 頭痛 headaches.

Yashima 血の池（瑠璃宝の池 Ruriho no Ike）

Kobo Daishi 弘法大師 stayed at 屋島寺 Yashima temple and wrote the Sutras
遍照金剛、三密行所、当都率天、内院管門. He then took hooju 宝珠 a wish-fulfilling jewel and threw it all into the pond.
There is also a tale that the ryuujin 竜神 Dragon King came to steal the jewel.
During the 源平合戦 Genpei wars around 1180, the Samurai who had fought at 檀ノ浦 Dannoura came here to wash their bloody swords, hence the name Chinoike.

If a woman dies during childbirth, the family has to get a special 流れ札 amulet from the temple 長善寺 Chozen-Ji.
This "chain amulet" has 100 pieces. Passers-by have to pour water over one, until the letters are invisible. If this has not happened after 1000 people have passed, the woman will not be able to get out of the Chinoike Blood Pond.
