Zenkai 禅海 Priest Zenkai
(?1691 / ?1687 - 1774)
A priest of the 曹洞宗 Soto Zen Sect.
He was the child of 越後国高田藩士 the Lord Takada from Echigo.
His boyhood name was 福原市九郎 Fukuhara Ichikuro.
His full priest name was 真如庵禅海　Shinnyo-An Zenkai.
He became a priest after both his parents had died. He left home and walked around the country.
In 1715 he took the name of Zenkai.
He is known for digging a tunnel in Oita, the Aonodomon in the gorge 耶馬渓 Yabakei.
He stayed at the temple 羅漢寺 Rakan-Ji in Bungo, when he learned about the dangerous route along 青野渡 Aonodo, where people and horses often lost their lives.
He begun to dig a tunnel for a safer passage in this area around 1730, with the permission of
豊前国中津藩主 the Lord of the Nakatsu Domain in Bungo.
With the help of local villagers and other Daimyo from Kyushu the work was completed within about 30 years.

Once it was finished, the villagers took money from the people who used the tunnel, it was the first toll road in Japan.

This place is mentioned in the famous novel about Zenkai:
Onshu no kanata ni 『恩讐の彼方に』
by Kikuchi Kan 菊池寛 (1888 - 1948)
In the novel the hero is called 了海 Ryokai.

Aonodōmon (青の洞門 meaning "blue tunnel")
is a tourist attraction located in the gorge of Yabakei, now part of Nakatsu City, in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Legend has it that before the tunnel was built, people had to climb over the cliffs through which the tunnel is built to reach an important local shrine. The path was very dangerous and people regularly fell to their deaths.
During the Edo period, a Buddhist monk named Zenkai, who had committed a murder in his earlier life, decided to build a safe passage for worshipers in order to atone for his crime. Beginning at the age of 49, he dedicated 30 years of his life to digging the 185 metre tunnel by hand, using only a hammer and chisel.

The gorge of Yabakei (耶馬渓)
is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty spanning the municipalities of Kusu and Nakatsu in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Located within Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, it was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan during the Shōwa era. Yabakei was formerly the name of a town, but was merged into Nakatsu Municipality in 2005. 　According to Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, official confirmed report, in despite the absence of rain, suddenly landslides occurred on the mountain slope, three houses were buried in the place and six person were lives on 11 April 2018.

Near the Yabakei gorge lived a woman who always prayed piously to 観音 Kannon Bosatsu.
One day she was almost killed by somebody, but the statue of Kannon appeared and took the deadly cut instead.
Maybe thel priest of the temple made up this story to attract more people . . . anyway . . .

高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune Fox at the temple 長寿寺 Choju-Ji
The priest 高蔵坊 Takakura Bo of temple Choju-Ji wanted to build a new main hall. The 老狐 old fox who lived in the temple compound wanted to help. He shape-shifted into priest Takakura and begun preaching at crossroads and along the highways:
"I am the priest of the temple Choju-Ji. The Kannon statue of our temple is especially powerful and grants wishes ... "
Many people heard this and came to visit the temple, giving money offerings and the hall could finally be built.
People called the old fox now 高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune and when he died he was venerated as the deity 高蔵坊稲荷 Takakura-Bo Inari.

A Tanuki named Tateishi lived along the highway and often shape-shifted into humans or played tricks on them.
One day a female fish peddler came along. She wanted to cross a river and lifted her skirt to pass through the water. But for some reason she could not cross it. When other people called her, she realized she was standing in a field and all the fish of her basket had gone.

The husband of 白石サカヨ Shiraishi Sakayo was carrying fish from the port of 平潟港 Hiragata. After passing a bridge and a mountain pass, he came to the 街道 Kaido highway. Just there a fox usually appeared and insulted him. The man then shouted:
"I will give one fish to 乙姫 Princess Otohime down the river!" and threw one piece of maguro 鰹 tuna fish down the valley.
If he did this, the fox would leave him in peace.
Another man who heard this story put on a white tenugui 手拭い hand towel to look like a woman, went down the river and got the tuna fish.

West of the swamp 化女沼 Kejonuma lived a rich person. He had a beautiful daughter and the rich lord of a manor wanted her as his wife. He refused, but he was punished and had to leave the village, so he went to 最上 Mogami. The servants stood by the highway roadside as he passed. His daughter took a purse with money and jumped into the swamp. All the fish in the swamp went with her and swam to Mogami, where there is now a small pond. She had some red lacquer plates which she could not take. They are still in the swamp and if horses walk nearby, their hooves may turn red from the lacquer.

Kejyonuma Dam (Japanese: 化女沼ダム) is an earthen dam in the city of Ōsaki, Miyagi Prefecture, completed in 1995.

Once the kannushi 神主 priest from 七村 Nanamura was accompanied by a wolf on his way home, but the animal suddenly bit into his sleeve and since he could not get rid of it, he was taken to the top of the mountain. The wolf dug a hole there and stuffed the priest inside to hide him.
A short while later a thousand wild wolves passed the highway in a parade.
Thus the kind wolf had saved the priest.

Kitchomu, Kicchomu 吉四六 - Hirota Kichiemon 廣田吉右衛門
(? - 1715)

Kitchomu is a hero in many parts of Southern Oita.
His real name was Hirota Kichiemon, who was born in 臼杵市野津町 Usuki, Notsu town.
He was the headman of the village and allowed to wear a sword in his belt and use a surname.
He was quite a tonchi とんち者 quick-witted person.

Kitchomu did not like the authorities and always helped the poor and people in need.
His name is also used for local rice wine, see below.

吉四六の名前は大分に伝わる古い民話の主人公から名づけられました。

Once upon a time, there was a very pleasant man called Kicchomu-san.
In Kicchomu-san's village, there was an orphan named Naokichi.
Naokichi's mother passed away from disease, and his father was a harpooner on a whaler, but one day he got caught in a storm and drown in the sea with the ship.
Therefore leaving his seaside home village since he was little, Naokichi was fostered by his uncle who lived Kicchomu-san's village.
However, there was not a single day when Naokichi forgot the sea.
I will get on a whaler and be a good harpooner like Dad!
Naokichi was always thinking so.
And then, when he became 11 years old, Naokichi let his uncle know his resolution, and it had been decided that he will return to the village where he was born.
Having heard about Naokichi, all the people of the village came to say farewell to him with the gift.
"That's the boy, Naokichi. You are your father's son."
"You must be a good harpooner."
While everyone unanimously encouraged Naokichi, one youth named Sampei said to him,
"Hey, Naokichi. Everyone irresponsibly praises you a lot, but it's not exactly admirable to be a harpooner on a whaler."
Naokichi asked Sampei in surprise.
"What do you mean, Sampei-san?"
"I've heard your father drowned in the sea. I mean, I thought it might bring you bad luck if you work on the unlucky sea where your parent died."
Silence.
All the people had been pleased until while ago, but Sampei's words pulled them in dead silence,
and Naokichi was about to burst into tears for the sudden unpleasant subject.
Kicchomu-san was listening to Sampei at the back, but came forward and asked him.
"Sampei, I have something to ask you. Where has your father died?"
"Unlike Naokichi's father, he has fortunately and surely died in his bed at our home."
"Uh-huh, so how about your grandfather?"
"So has Grandpa. He has not drowned in the sea like Naokichi's father."
Kitcchomu-san grinned to hear that.
"Then, Sampei, it makes no sense that you are against Naokichi going to sea."
"What?"
"Don't you think so? You say the place where a parent has died is unlucky, but as for your house, not only your father but also your grandfather has died, right?"
"That's…right, but—."
Sampei as he was, he didn't know how to answer.
Then the village headman beside Naokichi pat on his shoulder and said,
"Be a good harpooner, Naokichi."
"Yes, I will do my best!"
Thus, seen off by everyone, Naokichi briskly left the village.

Gaataroo ガータロ Gataro, the Kappa
Many children, who played in the river, died and people thought it must be the act of Gataro.
The strong Kitchomu came along, pulled down his pants and stuck his butt into the river to invite the Kappa.
When the Kappe grabbed his butt, he grabbed the Kappa instead.
Now the Kappa had to promise to become the protector of the local children, the villagers even made a song about this happening.

広島市東区牛田新町 / Ushita-shinmachi, Higashi-ku, Hiroshima city

The temple was founded in 1433.
During repair work a plate was found with the name of the priest 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei from the year 1588.
The shooroo 鐘楼 bell tower has the form of a hakamakoshi 袴腰, like a skirt or Hakama trousers of men, with a white painting. This type of tower dates back to the Heian period.

During the Edo period, the temple came under the regime of the Zen sect with 寺号 the temple name 宥珍 Yuchin.
A statue of Fudo Myo-O became the center of worship and the name 不動院 Fudo-In became popular.

The Copper Bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple

The large temple bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple in Hiroshima City is said to have been brought from Korea
by 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei, who was a daimyo and priest serving for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Mori Motonari during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1598).
It is an excellent artistic work of the early Goryeo dynasty (918-1932). The bell is 1.6 m tall and 65 cm in diameter. Beautiful arabesque designs are cast on relief on the upper and lower parts and four heavenly maidens are on the main body. The sitting image of Bosatsu is also carved in relief on the hitting mark (tsukiza), on which the name "Soshin Bosatsu" is inscribed. The bell was designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 1899.

A fox shape-shifted into a Samurai and called himself 蛻庵 Setsuan. He became a retainer of 諏訪侯 the Lord of Suwa. When they found out about his real identity, the fox-samurai had to go.
He was allowed to live at 興禅寺 the temple Kozen-Ji
Once he had to go to on an errand to 安国寺 the temple Ankoku-Ji, but he was found out and killed.
Soon after an epidemic broke out and people thought it was the curse of the fox.
They build a small shrine in the temple compound and venerated and appeased his soul there
at the 蛻庵稲荷 Setsuan Inari Shrine.

Jokoji Tonosama Kaido Highway

A part of this Highway is called

- Tonosama Kaido 殿様街道 "Highway of the Lord" -
It starts in 砂川 Sunagawa（尾張旭市 Owari-Asahi city) and ends at the gate of the temple Joko-Ji.
This part is about 13 km long.
In the Edo period it was also called
定光寺道 Jokoji Michi - Jokojido
or
御成道 Onarido
Since the Meiji period, the name Tonosama Kaido became popular.

The grave of the first Daimyo of the 尾張藩 Owari domain, 徳川義直 Tokugawa Yoshinao, is at the temple Joko-Ji
and the road was used for regular temple visits.
Gengei koobyoo 源敬公廟 Genkei Kobyo is the name of Yoshinao's grave.

Famous for its red leaves in autumn, best seen from an observatory in the West side.
定光寺公園 Jokoji Koen Park is another place for visitors.

Tokugawa Yoshinao 徳川義直, (1601 – 1650)
was a Japanese daimyō of the early Edo period.
Born the ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu with his concubine, Okame no Kata.
His childhood name was Gorōtamaru (五郎太丸). While still a young child, he was appointed leader of first the fief of Kofu in Kai Province and later the fief of Kiyosu in Owari Province. In 1610, he was appointed leader of the Owari Domain (present-day Nagoya), one of the most important regions in the country, thus founding the Owari-Tokugawa house. A holder of the 2nd court rank, junior grade (ju-ni-i), he had the title of dainagon (major counselor).
During the Kan'ei era (1624-44)
he had a kiln constructed at the corner of the Ofuke enceinte (Ofukemaru) of Nagoya Castle and invited potters from Seto to make pottery there. This became to be known Ofukei ware.
Yoshinao began learning Shinkage-ryū from Yagyū Hyōgonosuke at age 16, and was named the 4th sōke at age 21.
His remains were cremated and laid to rest at his mausoleum in Jōkō-ji (Seto).

Grandmother from the tea stall at the pass 夕立山の峠 along the 殿様街道 Tonosama Kaido closed her shop and went home every evening. And always a wolf came and followed her until she was safe at home. When she reached home, she gave one mochi 餅 rice cake to the wolf in gratitude. When the wolf left, she was not allowed to look back at him.

... a general and shogun of the early Heian Period of Japan.
His local opponent was
Aterui / Akuro-o / Acro-o アテルイ / 阿久呂王 / 阿弖流爲 / 悪路王 Akuro (? - 802)
At the time of Tamuramaro the Emishi 蝦夷 inhabitants of Northern Japan were seen as oni 鬼 demons
and Akuro was their king.
After Tamuramaro had killed Akuro, he transported his head to Kyoto, hence many legends on the way.

阿久呂王 Akuro had been pursued as an Oni demon and came to 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m).
His enemy shot an arrow at him near Sendai and killed the demon.
This place is now called 鬼首 Onikobe.

People come to this mound to get relief from illness of the head.
The head of Akuro was on the way to be carried to Kyoto, when the carrier passed here and the head became so heavy,

The Demon had been chased and crossed the Onitoge pass, but was found out and killed at the field now called

Onikobe in Naruko.
This is now the famous ski resort Narukoonsen Onikobe Ōsaki in Miyagi

He had been killed at Esashi, Iwayado, by Tamuramaro. His head flew off to Onikobe in Tamatsukuri,

坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro had captured the leader of the Emishi and cut off his head at 箆岳山 Mount Nonodakeyama.
The head begun to cry and fly off to the Western sky. When it fell down, a hot spring begun to blow up (fuki-age), hence the name.

All of a sudden the Demon Deity came to live on 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m), hunted for humans and ate them.
The Emperor ordered a member of the Tamura clan to drive him out. He chased him all the way to Sendai and finally killed him. The place is now known as 鬼首 Onikobe.

The Nagao Kaido wasonce known as the Yamato Kaido, a route connecting Nara and Sakai. A small shrine houses a Jizo guardian in front of the Osaka-Izumi-Sennan Highway along with a slone monument with an historical inscription. Another monument in front of Hochigai Shrine is inscribed with a tanka poem from the Manyoshu.

The Kishu Kaido flourished as an Edo-period trade route between the domains of Kishu and Senshu. At the eastern end of the route there are many rows of old houses and storefronts, and in the shopping district in Zaimokucho-Higashi can be found old signposts indicating the directions of destinations such as Osaka.

the shrine grounds are located at the site of the ruins of the 18th Japanese emperor's palace.
According to the Kojiki - the oldest existing Japanese historical text - a palace once stood on these grounds. They were the location of the last capital of the Kawachi Dynasty. Scholars say the Kawachi Dynasty was a peaceful time marked by abundant harvests of grains where people lived in happy abundance. With a number of place names in the area such as Mt. ichiya no matsu 一夜の松 pine tree growing in one night
In 1439, the sacred pine tree of the Sumiyoshi shrine started to bend down and probably fall on another Shrine building, so it had to be cut down.
The next morning, oh wonder, the tree was there straight and high as before.

This shrine is dedicated to the gods of
底筒男命 Sokotsutsu-no-kami, 中筒男命 Nakatsutsu-no-kami and 表筒男命 Uwatsutsu-no-kami
and it was officially designated in ancient time as one of the high ranked shrines. It was once admired as the greatest shrine of Chikuzen area (northern part of the present Fukuoka prefecture). The surrounding area was originally a cape at the mouth of Nakagawa River flowing into Hakata Bay. It was worshipped as a tutelary shrine of navigation. The gods were also worshipped as gods of Japanese poem (waka) and ancient famous poet Sogi visited this shrine to pay respect to the god.
The straight shaped roof of the main hall of this shrine is one of the specific features of ancient architectural style, very contrastive to the later Buddhist style. The main hall is designated as a national treasure and the copper axe and sword of the shrine are designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.

. Oni densetsu 鬼伝説　Regional Demon Legends .
At 住吉神社 Sumiyoshi Shrine there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet. It shows a man with shaven front hair sakayaki 月代 "like a moon", a hachimaki 鉢巻 headband and a large sword at the side. He sits next to an Oni and they play a game of kubihiki 首引き "neck pulling" in a contest of strength, a kind of "Neck tug of war".

In front of the 住吉神社 Sumiyoshi Shrine there lived a huge serpent. The animal later moved in the pond of the Shrine, but the pond dried out.

This Sumiyoshi Shrine is simply called 猪田神社 Inoda Jinja.

This stone is located in front of the 住吉神社 Sumiyoshi Shrine.
Normally there is no water in its holes, but on 土用に入る日 the first day of Doyo, water begins to accumulate.

shironezumi 白鼠 white mouse
Near 茶屋村 Chaya village along the Sumiyoshi Highway there was a huge mouse, almost as big as a cat, that would jump out and bite people. Small dogs were quite afraid of this beast.
People eventually killed it and buried it, placing a stone on the grave. There is now 鼠の塚 a stone mound for the mouse in the graveyard of Sumiyoshi Shrine.
