医王山 （いおうぜん） Iozen 不動院 Fudo-In 東光寺 Toko-ji
茨城県稲敷市江戸崎2617 / Ibaraki, Inashiki city, Edosaki
The temple is located on high ground in the town of Edosaki.
The temple was founded in 836 by 円仁 priest Ennin.
It was revitalized in 1470.
In the Edo period, the Lord of Edosaki of the Toki clan 土岐原氏, Toki Harashi, protected the temple.
In 1591, the new Lord of Edosaki, 蘆名盛重 Ashina Yoshihiro (1575 - 1631) restored the temple.
It was a special prayer temple for the first three Tokugawa Shoguns and also related to
priest Tenkai 天海 .
In 1876, the main hall was lost to fire, and rebuilt in 1975.
In 1976, a new Kigan Dono 祈願殿 "hall to make special wishes" was erected.
In 1990, 仁王門 the Nio-Mon gate was repaired.

Oosugi Jinja 大杉神社 Osugi Shrine, Ibaraki
It is said that in the early Edo period the priest Tenkai, who served as a consultant to the Shogun and stayed at the Fudo-In Temple in nearby town of Edosaki, was on board a ship in Tojo-no-ura, prayed to the large cedar tree in this shrine and successfully achieved a miracle of bringing about rainfall.

The temple was founded in 709 on request of Emperess 元明天 Genmei Tenno (661 - 721) in the compound of 鹿島神宮 the Shrine Kashima Jingu as 護摩所 a place to perform fire rituals. The first priest was 明道上人 Saint Myodo. The temple was used by 足利尊氏 Ashikaga Takauji to have fire rituals performed. A special hall for these rituals was built, 護摩堂 Goma Do. The main statues in this hall are
godai Myo-o 五大明王 the Five great Myo-O.
In temple was relocated to its present place in 1677. Later many buildings were lost to fire.
In 1879, they were rebuilt. The present-day Fudo Hall is covered with copper sheets.
Many believers of the Daishi Ko 大師講 Kobo Daishi Prayer Group come here to recite the sutras and holy chants and take part in the yearly festivals.
In the Daishi Do 大師堂 Hall for Kobo Daishi there is also a statue of 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu.

Genmei's reign spanned the years 707 through 715 CE.

Before her ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, her personal name (imina)was Abe-hime.
Empress Genmei was the fourth daughter of Emperor Tenji; and she was a younger sister of Empress Jitō by a different mother. Her mother, Mei-no-Iratsume (also known as Soga-hime), was a daughter of Udaijin Soga-no-Kura-no-Yamada-no-Ishikawa-no-Maro (also known as Soga Yamada-no Ō-omi).

Founded in 829 by on request of 淳和天皇 Emperor Junna (active 823 833) - to pray for the end of an epidemic,
by 慈覚大師 Ennin Jikaku Daishi, who had come from Kyoto, 延暦寺 temple Enryaku-Ji .
Ennin copied the statue of 清水寺 the Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto, making one cut and praying three times after it for the healing of the people.
The temple was located at 平河 Hirakawa in Edo, where many people had died from an epidemic.
During the Edo period it was relocated to 馬喰町 Bakuro cho on request of ､徳川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu.
In 1657 the temple burned down during the 明暦Meireki fire and was relocated to its present place.

Matsugaya Station (松が谷駅, Matsugaya-eki) is a station on the Tama Toshi Monorail Line in Hachiōji, Tokyo. The station serves the Kashima and Matsugaya areas of Tama New Town, running above Tokyo Metropolitan Route 156.
There are few shops or municipal facilities nearby, only homes and apartment buildings; the station surroundings are therefore very quiet. Two parks and several schools are also nearby.

Asakusa Kannon 浅草観音 and temple 浅草寺 Senso-Ji, Asakusadera .
Around the year 1802, a country bump came to Edo for sightseeing. After visiting the Asakusa Kannon he then was on his way back home. On the bank of the river he met a very drunk man who attacked him and killed him . . . at least the man lost his conscience and fell to the ground. When he came back to his senses, he felt for the amulet of the Asakusa Kannon, which he had placed into his breast pocket. The imprint of Kannon had disappeared from the paper.
Now he knew that Kannon had taken his place and saved his life.

A man named 土師臣中知 Haji no Nakatomo, an official during the Asuka period around 628, came to the Asakusa area. He heard the story of two brothers, 檜熊浜成 Hinokuma Hamashige and 武成 Takenari. They worked as fishermen. One day they fished a statue of Kannon out of the river, but threw it back. At another place in the river they again caught the Kannon statue in their net. Nakatomo realized it was a special statue and venerated it in his home, making it into a temple and he himself became a priet.
But the statue smelled very much like fish, so he used a lot of incense to get rid of the smell.

ubagaike 姥ヶ池 the pond of the old woman

In the old days this unremarkable park with its little pond was shallow marshland that grew smaller and smaller as the city of Edo (old Tokyo) grew around it. In 1891 the local government finally had the marsh filled in and the present day park was put in its place. The name of the pond comes from an old legend concerning a stone pillow housed at a nearby temple.
During the reign of Emperor Yomei (585-587 A.D.), in a place called Asajigahara, there was a small trail connecting Oshu and Shimofusa. It was the only trail in the area and along it there was only a single house, inhabited by an old woman and her beautiful daughter. Any traveler wishing to rest on his journey had to stop over at their house where the old lady would promptly bash his head in with a stone pillow and steal his clothes and belongings. The old lady would then dump the bodies in a nearby pond.
Naturally her daughter was not happy with this and pleaded with the old lady to stop the killings but there was no persuading her. The body count reached 999 and the daughter was desperate to stop the killing.
One day a young man came to stay over and the old lady, as was her habit, took the stone pillow and promptly split his skull open. Upon closer inspection though, the old lady found that she had killed her own daughter who had gone in disguise, hoping that this final sacrifice would persuade the old lady to stop the killings. As the old lady was going mad from the realization of her deeds she took her daughter's corpse and threw herself and the corpse together into the pond.
Since that day, the pond has been knows as Ubagaike, the Pond of the old Lady

Around 1760, there lived a priest near the Asakusa Temple, called Arigata Bo ありがた坊 "the thankful priest".
His other name was Rakushin 楽心 (rakuchin . . . to feel at ease), but he was deaf.
He had to make regular prayers at the Jizodoo 地蔵堂 Jizo Hall. When he recited his first prayer, he heard the voice of Jizo callilng him 楽心 Rakushin. Next Jizo called arigatoo gozaimasu 「ありがとうござります」 "thank you very much".
Since then he could hear again and also talk to people.

In 1877, at the home of the Ohashi family in 浅草仲見世 the Nakamise, Asakusa, for about half a year many weird things happened.
Well, this was a curse that goes back some time.
An ancestor of the Ohashi family was a Samurai attendant of 伝法院 the temple Denbo-In. He had to clear a bamboo grove in the temple compound, where tatari 祟り a curse was lingering. To appease the deity, a small Shrine was erected to appease the angry deity.
As a protector amulet against fire and disaster, the golden statue of a tanuki was erected.

Asakusa Kannon 浅草観音 and temple 浅草寺 Senso-Ji, Asakusadera .
Around the year 1802, a country bump came to Edo for sightseeing. After visiting the Asakusa Kannon he then was on his way back home. On the bank of the river he met a very drunk man who attacked him and killed him . . . at least the man lost his conscience and fell to the ground. When he came back to his senses, he felt for the amulet of the Asakusa Kannon, which he had placed into his breast pocket. The imprint of Kannon had disappeared from the paper.
Now he knew that Kannon had taken his place and saved his life.

A man named 土師臣中知 Haji no Nakatomo, an official during the Asuka period around 628, came to the Asakusa area. He heard the story of two brothers, 檜熊浜成 Hinokuma Hamashige and 武成 Takenari. A man could not sleep because something like a mouse seemed to come out from under his pillow every night. He got yamainu 山犬 a wolf statue from the local Gongen Shrine. He put the statue on a shelf, read 心経 the Heart Sutra and soon heard the sound of something leaving through the door. From the next day on, he could sleep undisturbed.

soozen sama ソウゼン様 / お蒼前様 protector deity of horses
The 高村家 Takamura family had always kept horses for work and erected hokora 祠 a small Shrine in their compound to venerate Sozen Sama.
Until around 1955 many people came here to venerate the deity on the 16th day of January. Sozen Sama was not venerated inside a house.
Once during a rainstorm, it fell into a pond together with the hokora for 瀬戸物の神体 the Deity of Pottery and was never found again.
myoojin sama 明神様 the Myojin Deity
The 横田家 Yokota family had a large katsura no ki カツラの大木 Japanese Judas tree in their garden, where they venerated Myojin Sama. Near its roots was a Hokora for 明神様 Myojin Sama. Inside was 瀬戸物 a piece of pottery with shirohebi 白蛇 a white serpent coiled around it.
In former times a relative had built ths with the wish to become a learned man, and others came to pray here too.

One of the seven wonders of Matsuyama castle are the crucian carps with one eye in the moat.
When 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi Kukai was on his pilgrimage in Shikoku, a villager had grilled crucian carp for dinner gave half of it to Kukai. Kukai threw the carp into the moat and it came back to life. But it had only one eye.

In former times, there was a fox in the compound of a rich man in Kushihara. Once the bride of the family went home to her own family with her father, but suddenly disappeared and when father came home, she was already there. Other villagers said they got cured just be seeing this bride. In Nishi-Kubo there is a small river where the local Kappa pulled horses into the river. The other Kappa became angry and wanted to kill it. But a villager passing by saved the Kappa. In the evening two Kappa came by to express his thanks. The male had a pottery bottle with Sake 酒 rice wine and two suzuki 鱸 sea brass. This was during the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333).
When people poured Sake from the bottle, they always left a little bit and next morning the bottle was full again. This would go on for ages, promised the Kappa. But then one evening the humans drunk all the bottle to the last drup, and from that time it stayed empty.

At Okoshi no Taki 尾越の瀧 the waterfall of Okoshi there lived a dragon. In the direction where he stayed, the water would get dirty and the bottom could not be seen. If people throw dirt or 瀬戸物の破片 shards of pottery into the water, rain will not stop for a long time.

In January of the year 1731 near 建仁寺 the temple Kennin-Ji there was a shop selling bowls. The son of the owner got an order from a man from Sakai/Osaka, to make pottery bowls for the Korean ambassadors. To collect the payment his father went to Sakai, but he was told that they never placed such an order. When the father questioned his son, he was confused, could not understand a word and was obviously bewitched by a fox.

A merchant from Yokkaichi went out for business, loading his car with rice bowls, chopsticks and more. In the evening he came to a bridge where he found a baby carriage with a crying baby. This must be an abandoned child, he thought, took it in his arms and cradled it. When he came back to his senses, he realized he had been shaking his own car and all the pottery pieces inside were broken. He did not remember where he was and stayed there confused until the next morning. He had been bewitched by a fox, no doubt.

There is a river providing drinking water to the city. If people throw in pottery or metal items or try to wash their own body, the body begins to ache, as they have been touched by the God of the Water. To get healed they must make offerings of o-miki お神酒 ritual rice wine, salt and rice.

Around 1900 there was an article in the Osaka Mainichi Shinbun newspaper about Shinodayama no oogama 信田山の大蝦蟇 a huge toad from Mount Shinodayama. In that summer, at the Shrine Toki Jinja in 瀬戸物町 the Setomoni district in d gorge someone had seen a huge toad, almost as big as a human, with sparkling eyeballs. Many visitors came to the mountain in that summer.

One summer some young people saw a hitodama 人魂 sparkle of human soul near 船町橋 the Funamachibashi bridge, but it did not stay long.
Then 陶器商の主人 a pottery merchant from 筋違橋 Sujikaibashi had a dream : He went to the bridge because he felt thirsty, but he was attacked by some thugs and fled in haste. When he awoke, he was covered in sweat. After he had told the dream to his wife, he dropped dead.

Once a woman could not forgive the sins of her man and committed suicide by drowning in the pond and became a Dragon Deity. If people throw shards of pottery into this pond, she gets angry and brings great rain over the area.
If other women commit suicide in the pond, they will be transformed into snakes and serpents 蛇身.

Once a man exchanged a cow for a rooster which could lay golden eggs. He wanted to have one more and decided to buy another cow to exchange it. That night Kannon Bosatsu appeared in his dream. She made him realize that this was too much of greed and he needed to change.
The next morning when he awoke, the golden egg had turned into an egg of pottery.

The heso 臍 navel of the God of Thunder had come out of the ground. It looked like 陶器質 a piece of pottery, its size that of the heart of a mullet.

Thunder(Kaminari in Japanese) is a god. He is fearful but makes us grateful because he brings out rain which make rice plants grow up. So we call him Kaminari-sama with respect. Sama is a term of respect. He is often shown in Japanese picture books as a demon with two horns on his head, only wearing pants of tiger skin, carrying small drumson his back. When he starts to beat his drums, thunder and lighting are born and it rains.
Parents often tell their children to be careful of their navels, because Kaminari's favorite food is a navel and he is coming to steal theirs.

nanatsuzuka no tatari 七塚の祟り the curse of the "seven mounds"
Near the graves of Jofuku there is a place called Nanatsuzuka 七塚 "seven mounds", where seven retainers of the Lord are buried. Once the graves were dug out and some swords and 陶器 pottery pieces were found. The people involved in this digging suddenly became ill, so the place was refilled again and never touched.
Now it is 七塚の碑 a stone memorial at 徐福公園 Jofuku Park.

If a ten 貂 marten is killing chickens or fish from the pond, people place 陶器製 a huge statue of a toad nearby.
This will stop the marten from coming again.

A man could not sleep because something like a mouse seemed to come out from under his pillow every night. He got yamainu 山犬 a wolf statue from the local Gongen Shrine. He put the statue on a shelf, read 心経 the Heart Sutra and soon heard the sound of something leaving through the door. From the next day on, he could sleep undisturbed.

Until around 1955 many people came here to venerate the deity on the 16th day of January. Sozen Sama was not venerated inside a house.
Once during a rainstorm, it fell into a pond together with the hokora for 瀬戸物の神体 the Deity of Pottery and was never found again.
myoojin sama 明神様 the Myojin Deity
The 横田家 Yokota family had a large katsura no ki カツラの大木 Japanese Judas tree in their garden, where they venerated Myojin Sama. Near its roots was a Hokora for 明神様 Myojin Sama. Inside was 瀬戸物 a piece of pottery with shirohebi 白蛇 a white serpent coiled around it.
In former times a relative had built ths with the wish to become a learned man, and others came to pray here too.

One of the seven wonders of Matsuyama castle are the crucian carps with one eye in the moat.
When 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi Kukai was on his pilgrimage in Shikoku, a villager had grilled crucian carp for dinner gave half of it to Kukai. Kukai threw the carp into the moat and it came back to life. But it had only one eye.

In former times, there was a fox in the compound of a rich man in Kushihara. Once the bride of the family went home to her own family with her father, but suddenly disappeared and when father came home, she was already there. Other villagers said they got cured just be seeing this bride. The year of foundation is not quite clear, but in 1572 priest Hiroka 宥賀和尚 helped restoring it.
At the beginning of the Meiji period it was relocted to temple Kamisaki-Ji.

The temple was quite popular and 「神崎寺の晩鐘」 "the evening bell at Kamisaki-Ji" was Senba Hakkei 千波八景 one of the eight famous sights of Senba.
At the beginning of the Meiji period, 神崎鋳砲所 Kamisaki Seizosho was established in the compound of the temple.
The main statue is Dainichi Nyorai.

Located in the heart of Mito City, Lake Senba 千波湖 is a great place to relax for locals and visitors alike.
The lake is encircled by a 3km long walking and jogging route which also passes close to Kairakuen Garden and the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art, making it the ideal route for a relaxed day's sightseeing. Bikes and swan-shaped pedalo boats are also available to rent, and there are several cafes on the lake shore, perfect for a coffee or ice cream after your walk.
There's also plenty of wildlife to be found around Lake Senba with koi carp and terrapins in the lake itself and swans and other birds on the banks. Around 30 Whooper swans make their nests at the lake between mid-October and March each year. Be careful not to get too close – these swans are not to be messed with!

笠原山 Kasaharazan 東光院 Toko-In 神崎寺 (かみさきじ) Kamisaki-Ji
The year of foundation is not quite clear, but in 1572 priest Hiroka 宥賀和尚 helped restoring it.
At the beginning of the Meiji period it was relocted to temple Kamisaki-Ji.

The temple was quite popular and 「神崎寺の晩鐘」 "the evening bell at Kamisaki-Ji" was Senba Hakkei 千波八景 one of the eight famous sights of Senba.
At the beginning of the Meiji period, 神崎鋳砲所 Kamisaki Seizosho was established in the compound of the temple.
The main statue is Dainichi Nyorai.

The lake is encircled by a 3km long walking and jogging route which also passes close to Kairakuen Garden and the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art, making it the ideal route for a relaxed day's sightseeing. Bikes and swan-shaped pedalo boats are also available to rent, and there are several cafes on the lake shore, perfect for a coffee or ice cream after your walk.
There's also plenty of wildlife to be found around Lake Senba with koi carp and terrapins in the lake itself and swans and other birds on the banks. Around 30 Whooper swans make their nests at the lake between mid-October and March each year. Be careful not to get too close – these swans are not to be messed with!

茨城県水戸市田島 / Tajima town, Mito, Ibaraki
Behind the temple is a park with 四国八十八カ所 the 88 temples of the Shikoku Henro walk.
This temple was first erected in 1381 in 鹿島郡 the Kashima district and later moved to 水戸城 the Mito Castle. In 1595 it was moved to Tajima, where 不動堂 a hall for Fudo had already been.
The main statue is 延命地蔵 Enmei Jizo, where people also come to pray for the safe upbringing of children.
