正観世音菩薩 Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu
in the 観音堂 Kannon Do Hall.

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

The temple was founded in 1606 by 第九世源蓮社本誉上人利覚和尚, abbot of the temple 赤坂浄土寺 Jodo-Ji in Akasaka.
永井直勝 Nagai Naokatsu (1563 - 1626) layed the foundation, creating a temple out of the hermitage of the 永井家 Nagai clan.
The Nagai clan was the 信濃守 the Lord of Shinano. The area of his estate was called
信濃殿町 Shinanodono machi or 信濃原 Shinanohara, now called 信濃町 Shinano town.
The founder Naokatsu was a priest performing a ritual for sennichi 千日 1000 days and the temple was called 千日寺 Sennichi-Ji. The surrounding valley was called 千日谷 Sennichidani.
Around 1955, some parts of the temple compound and cemetrey were used for other purposes in the growing city of Tokyo.
The new temple was built by the famous architect Kuma Kengo.

In 1964, 10-year old Kengo Kuma visited Tokyo and stood in awe of the swooping, concrete Olympic stadiums designed by Kenzo Tange. These megalithic forms, which spiral off the ground in simultaneous expression and defiance of physics, captured the energy of rapidly industrializing Japan and inspired Kuma to become an architect. Today, Kuma's architecture is recognized around the world, often in the form of museums and skyscrapers that display quietly rule-bending geometries engineered of discretely simple elements. Despite his immense portfolio, the seasoned architect — whose firm was recently tapped to design a new stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — shows no less enthusiasm for smaller scale projects, such as his firm's recently completed addition to the Jodo Shu Ichigyo-in Temple in Tokyo.
Located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, the Edo-era Inchigyo-in sits in the line of sight of numerous neighboring mid- and high-rises. Kengo Kuma and Associates took note of the frequent aerial view of the temple and designed a new, low-lying main hall covered with a large, gently inclined roof. From above, the roof appears to lift gently off the ground, sheltering the structure beneath with a sheet of half-cylinder aluminum shingles that recall traditional kawara tiling. This distinctive covering cantilevers out at an angle, casting a protective shade that beckons visitors in toward the building's wood-paneled façade.
As in many of Kuma's works, modern glass and aluminum often serve as the backdrop to visibly grained wooden elements. In the main hall of the Ichigyo-in, brightly hued cedar spreads generously throughout, the wood's naturally rippling imprints adding an organic quality to a mostly rectilinear interior. In the basement, temple visitors can find an automated ossuary. Partitioning cedar-wood screens introduce intimacy and enclosure into the underground space while keeping it bright and open, allowing the ossuary to function as a community space that gathers people and facilitates connections with ancestors.

The magnificent temple of the once powerful Owari Tokugawa clan!
Built in the 17th century in the outskirts of downtown Nagoya City, this spectacular temple is the largest wooden structure in the city, with several of the time-surviving original structures permanently open for visitation!
The 9th son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, 徳川義直 Tokugawa Yoshinao,
was the lord of Nagoya Castle and, upon his death in 1650, his son 徳川光友 Mitsutomo had Kenchuji Temple built in his honor. It then became the Owari Tokugawa clan's Family Temple, and holds enshrined the following generations of Tokugawas.
Currently the area of the temple encompasses a wide area of about 33,000 square meters, but it is believed that originally the whole temple premises were a mind-blowing 165,000 square meters! In fact, the "Somon" Main Gate itself sits at the Kenchuji Park, south of the temple, which illustrates the majesty of the original area.
The space now holds the park, 4 schools, 2 kindergartens, the Higashi-Ward Office, a Police Station and a Fire Department, not to mention a myriad of residential and commercial buildings.
Rebuilt, but still a priceless heritage
In the year 1785 a great fire broke off at the district of Ozone, further northeast from Nagoya Castle. In an unfortunate chain of events, a "futon" mattress in flames was blown by the wind and landed on the roof of the main temple building, initiating a fire that reduced it to ashes. Only the "Somon" Main Gate and the "Sanmon" third gates escaped the disaster and are standing to this day. Great efforts were dispensed to rebuild it by the end of the 18th century. The Sanmon remains as one of the original structures from 1651 and one of the major attraction of the temple.
Providence or miracle, it is amazing all the same
During the fire incident, the main statue of Amida Buddha was hurriedly taken from the burning temple and also was saved. Nowadays it decorates the Main Prayer Hall at the succeeding Main Temple, which at 27m wide and 25m deep, totaling a 700 square meters of tiled roof, makes for the largest such wooden structure within city borders. Aichi Prefecture appointed many of the constructions as Tangible Cultural Heritage, including the Main Gate, Third Gate and the Tokugawa Clan Mausoleum.
At several columns around the structure it is possible to spot some curious forms carved in the wood, which attest to the ingenuity and irreverence of the carpenters of old:
leaf forms, a cluster of grapes, even a bat, and others.

The temple was founded around 1600 by the lord of 武蔵国忍藩 Musashi no Kuni, Oshi Han,
松平忠吉 Matsudaira Tadayoshi (1580 - 1607).

Tadayoshi was the fourth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu with his concubine Saigo-no-Tsubone.
When his mother died, he and his brother were adopted by Acha no Tsubone (1555-1637). His full brother, Tokugawa Hidetada, was the second shōgun.
Later, Tadayoshi was adopted by Matsudaira Ietada and succeeded him as the second lord of Oshi Domain.
At the Battle of Sekigahara, he was attended by Ii Naomasa and was therefore at the forefront of the fighting. In the midst of the battle, he was shot by an Ishida gunner, but survived with a bullet wound. He was given Kiyosu Domain afterwards and remained there until his death at 1607.
He was buried in Shinnyo-Ji in Kakegawa.
The Oshi Domain 忍藩 Oshi Han, was centered on Oshi Castle in what is now part of the city of Gyoda, Saitama.

The temple was moved here in the Meiji period by the famous priest 釈雲照 Shaku Unsho (1827 - 1909).

Unsho came to 松江千手院 a Kannon temple in Matsue in 1836.
In 1844 he went to 高野山 Mount Koyasan to study 真言密教 Shingon Mikkyo Buddhism.
Later he lived at the temple 新長谷寺 Shin-Hasedera in Mejiro.
He died in 1909 of influenza.

The temple was first located in Mejiro, called 蔵王寺 Zao-Ji.
Unsho founded his school for priests 目白僧園 Mejiro Zoen.
In 1921 Zao-Ji it was moved to this location and named after its founder Unsho.
目白僧園 Mejiro Zoen was later moved to 練馬区 Nerima ward and called 十善戒寺 Juzenkai-Ji.
Juzenkai refers to the 10 good precepts of Buddhism.

Kechimyaku (血脈) is a Japanese term for a lineage chart
Zen Buddhism and some other Japanese schools, documenting the "bloodline" of succession of various masters or listing priests in a particular school. In Zen the kechimyaku theoretically links a student to all previous generations back to the Buddha himself. In the Sōtō school of medieval Japan it became commonplace for the kechimyaku to be administered to lay students for such rituals as the jukai ceremony. Traditionally this document is administered at the time of Dharma transmission in Soto Zen, during a shiho ceremony. During amagoi 雨乞い a rain ritual at the temple 龍拈寺（竜拈寺） the Temple Ryunen-Ji, after the priests had finished their riutals, they went to a coastal area named 竜江 Ryuko and threw thir kesa 袈裟 robes into the sea while chanting Sutras.
Then they threw the kechimyaku 血脈 lineage charts for ryuujin 竜神 the Dragon Deity into the water.
After that there was always a rainfall.

Once a beautiful woman came to the priest of the temple 全久院 Zenkyu-In and wanted to obtain kechimyaku 血脈 a blood lineage chart.
As a gift she left some uroko 鱗 fish scales.
When the priest saw her leaving, he realized that it had been a daija 大蛇 huge serpent.
For the next amagoi 雨乞い rain ritual he used a big tub, placed the fish scales into it, placed some Kechimyaku in it and washed it all into the 海倉淵 Umikurabuchi to produce rain in the evening.

A woman once commited suicide by throwing herself into the pond and then became the master of the pond.
Zen Priest Dogen 道元禅師 from the temple Eihei-Ji threw some Kechimyaku into the pond and held a ritual for her, so she could go to the Buddhist paradise.

When the priest goes to the Yakushi Pond to pray for rain, it will surely rain very soon.

To show its gratitude, the Hebigami made a well with good water in the compound and gave the priest a robe thet he would never loose.

The stepmother of the child from 楽人 Rakujin died with the wish that her daughter would inherit the family wealth.
Soon the child of Rakujin died too, saying the stepmother had come.
Three days later the wife became very ill.
She got a kechimyaku 血脈 lineage chart and placed it on the gravew of the stepmother.
Soon after she got well.

A priest became involved with a married woman and to attone for their sin they turned into serpents and lived in a nearby pond.
Around 1400, the two serpents appeared before 梅国和尚 the priest Baikoku and asked him to help them get to the Buddhist paradise.
He gave them a kechimyaku 血脈 lineage chart and a posthumous Buddhist name.
The two serpents thanked the priest and left for ever.

There were two naked men standing outside.
When the villagers chanted the Amida Buddha prayers, the men disappeared.

When 閑唱上人 Saint Kansho came to 穢多村 Eta village and gave them Kechimyaku.
The two appeared in his dream, thanked him and then disappeared.

Once a beautiful woman came to 真興寺 the Temple Shinko-Ji every morning.

She wanted to get a kechimyaku 血脈 linage chart.
She received the Kechimyaku and was saved.
To express her gratitude, she gave a special well to the temple, the 竜梅水 Ryubaisui.

Once upon a time, a fisherman caught 人面魚 a fish with a human face.
He wanted to share it with his friends and invited them.
During the preparation for the meal he realized that this was a special fish that should not be eaten.
He wrapped the fish in paper and asked his friends to throw it away on their way home.
But one man kept it and cooked a meal for his daughter with this fish.
The girl grew up, got married, but when her husband died, she became young again, married again and on and on...
The woman became ashamed of herself and became a nun.
She had lived for 800 years.

The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai

The temple was founded in 745 by 行基上人 Saint Gyoki Bosatsu.

It was first called 薬師寺 Yakushi-Ji (Temple for Yakushi Nyorai).
During a flooding of the river 庄内川 Shonaigawa in 948, the main statue was lost.
In 1111 during the reign of 鳥羽天皇 Toba Tenno (1103 - 1156) the hall was rebuilt and the temple named
護国院 Gokoku-In (temple to protect the country).

During the reign of 嵯峨天皇 Saga Tenno there lived a person called 三条中将 Lieutenant Sanjo, married to a high-ranking woman.
He promised to make a golden statue of Amida Butsu 阿弥陀仏 Amida Buddha if she would have a child.
After a while she became pregnant and a girl was born.
The mother died when the girl was seven.
The lieutenant married again.
The stepmother wanted to kill the daughter, but the golden statue of Amida protected her.

During the reign of 嵯峨天皇 Saga Tenno there was the saying that
if only one member of the family drinks Toso the whole family would get ill.
But if all family members would drink Toso, they would stay healthy for the whole year.
The Toso was kept in a well and pulled out on the first of January.

. shirohebi / hakuja 白蛇と伝説 Legends about white serpents .
嵯峨天皇 Saga Tenno did not like the sound of thunder. He asked Kukai to make it stop.
Kukai advised to plant an enju 槐 Japanese pagoda tree and all the lightning would fall down there.
The master of this tree was shirohebi 白蛇 a white serpent, which should never be touched with a blade.
Once a guardman tried to kill the serpent, but the blade of his sword bent and he soon became quite ill.

When Empress Danrin gave birth, she spread sand from under the main building of Umenomiya Shrine under her bed and gave birth to her son without complications.

. daija, orochi 大蛇 the huge serpent, great snake .
The border between 栗本郡 / 「くりたぐん」 Kurita district and 野洲郡 Yasu district was a large river.
At 三上山 Mount Mikamiyama the river divided into two. 南川 Minamikawa became a deep river pool at 土山 Mount Tsuchiyama.
In former times daija 大蛇 a huge serpent lived in the river pool.
During the reign of 嵯峨天皇 Saga Tenno there was a great noisy earthquake.
When he asked a diviner about the earthquake, Saga Tenno was told that orochi おろち a huge serpent was living in the river, wanting to kill the Emperor.
The emperor invited the local farmers and asked them to get rid of the serpent. A few thousand came together and finally drove the serpent away.
The temple Daikōmyō-Ji 大光明寺 Daikomyo-Ji was built in rememberance of this event.
