The main statue is 薬師瑠璃光如来 Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai
- and 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O.

Fudo is also called 中郷の不動さん Nakago no Fudo san or Gankake Fudo 願かけ不動 Fudo to make a wish

The temple was founded in 729 by 　
. Taichoo, Taichō 泰澄上人　Saint Taicho Shonin .
He came to the region when he was 47 years old and wanted to do something to make the people there happy.
Therefore he put up a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the Budddha of Medicine.

Saint Taicho had also founded the temple 豊原寺 Toyohara-Ji in Fukui.

Tenryuji Temple is a burst of Edo Period history.
Like its cousin in Ueno, Tenryuji Temple's Bell of Time - known as toki no kane in Japanese - was used to keep time for the citizens of old Edo. The bell also served as a reminder for the customers of the nearby 'pleasure quarters' to leave the premises...
Established at the end of the 16th century,
the temple is closely associated with the Tokugawa Shogunate and was connected with the family temple of the father of Lady Saigo, Tokugawa Ieyasu's trusted concubine. Perhaps because of such political connections, a number of the temple's older features are still extant. The Bell of Time, now a Cultural Property of the city, of course still stands as does the romon-styled temple gate. Both structures are easily recognised by their distinctive designs, completely at odds with the modern buildings around them.
A cemetery can be found here and if you can, take note of the surrealistically aged tombstone markings and the standing Jizo statues.
The main hall of the temple, though a modern concrete-reinforced structure, is robustly handsome with crisp, clean designs.
Just outside of the temple at its base stands a statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

The Mantra of Light (光明真言 kōmyō shingon), also called
the Mantra of the Unfailing Rope Snare,
is an important mantra of the Shingon and Kegon sects of Buddhism, but is not emphasized in other Vajrayana sects of Buddhism. It is taken from the Amoghapāśakalparāja-sūtra or Sutra of the Mantra of the Unfailing Rope Snare of the Buddha Vairocana's Great Baptism and is chanted as follows:

Sanskrit:
om amogha vairocana mahamudra manipadma jvala pravarttaya hum

Japanese:
おん あぼきゃ べいろしゃのう まかぼだら まに はんどま じんばら はらばりたや うん
on abokya beiroshanō makabodara mani handoma jimbara harabaritaya un

Initially, the mantra received little mention in East Asian Buddhist texts, and although Kukai brought the sutra to Japan in the 9th century, there are no records that he ever utilized it in tantric practices. Records show gradually increasing use in the Heian Period, until the 13th century when it was popularized in medieval Japanese Buddhism by Myōe, and later by Shingon monks Eison and Ninshō in their ministries.
Both the Mantra and the nembutsu (nenbutsu) were often incorporated by medieval Buddhists at one time or another, often in the same service. A common practice for the Mantra of Light was to sprinkle pure sand, blessed with this mantra, on the body of a deceased person or their tomb, based on teachings expounded in the Sutra.
The belief was that a person who had accumulated much bad karma, and possible rebirth in Hell would be immediately freed and allowed a favorable rebirth into the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. This practice is known as dosha-kaji (土砂加持) in Japanese.

When the villagers dug out they found a baby. They gave the baby many sweets and it grew up.

Once a man at night in bed heard a voice calling him. When he came to his sensed he found himself at the bank of the pond.
He hurried back home, but again the voice called for him and made him come to the bank of the pond.
Back home again he begun to recite the Komoy mantra until the next morning.
If a strange voice calls for you at night, you should never - never go out and follow it.

In 1418, 足利義嗣 Ashikaga Yoshitsugu (1394 - 1418) was killed by his brother 義持 Ashikaga Yoshimichi (1386 - 1428) at the temple 林光院 Rinko-In, where he lived in confinement.
In 1424, on the 14th day of the 6th lunar month, Shogun 足利義量 Ashikaga Yoshikazu (1407 - 1425) became very ill and often mumbled "Oh, what happened then at the temple Rinko-In!" - this must have been the vengeful spirit of Yoshitsugu. After consulting with the Emperor, they held rituals to appease the soul. For seven days, starting on the 4th day of the 7th lunar month, they held rituals 愛染護摩供 for Aizen Myo-O and also had the Komyo mantra read out many times.

Tokei Inari 斗瑩稲荷 (とけいいなり じんじゃ)
In the estate of 宇津野左衛門四郎為忠 Utsuno Saemon Shiro Tametada there lived shirogitsune 白狐 a white fox.
One night there came thieves and Saemon fought them, but got hurt and died.
But he came back to life soon.
There he found he had no wounds, but the white fox had them and the fox had died.
The white fox had become his substitute.
The family made a grave for the fox and built a small Shrine they called 左衛門四郎稲荷 Saemon Shiro Inari.
The shrine was later added to the temple 斗瑩山光明寺 Tokeizan Komyo-Ji and named 斗瑩稲荷 Tokei Inari Shrine.

Kashima no kaname 鹿島の要 Kaname Stones from Kashima
Between 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji at Kitayama and 日浄寺 the temple Nichijo-Ji at 堤町 Tsutsumi town there was a large wetland and the river 梅田川 Umedagawa.
In the South was 鹿島神社 the Shrine Kashima Jinja and the area was called
鹿島ヶ崎 Kashimagasaki.
South to the hill there was a flatland where seven large boulders were scattered.
The seven boulders came flying here from 常陸の鹿島 the Kashima Shrine in Hitachi.
They are known as Kashima no kaname 鹿島の要 Kashima stones to prevent an earthquake.

At 光明寺 the temple Komyo-Ji around 1682, at the burial of a farmer's wife there was a thunderstorm.
The priest 憲海上人 Saint Kenkai placed a kesa 袈裟 priest surplice around the coffin and threw a statue of Amida Nyorai toward the West.
The weather cleared very soon and the old cat of the temple died.
The statue of Amida had hit the eye of the cat.
Since then they never keep cats at this temple.

An itinerant priest promised to make it quiet. He placed a paper strip on it with the inscription

Since then the tree did not make sounds any more and soon withered.

At the waterfall 全川瀑 Zensenbaku of 名取川 the river Natorigawa priest Jigaku Daishi 慈覚大師 prayed to Fudo Myo-O at the temple 山寺立石寺 Yamadera Risshaku-Ji.
In 1623, the lord of Yamagata 鳥居忠政 Torii Tadamasa (1566 - 1628) had a conflict with the Temple.
The priest 円海上人 held a special ritual at the waterfall for 37 days to curse Tadamasa.
On the last day he threw the paper with his vow and a wara ningyo 藁人形 a straw doll for curses into the waterfall basin.
The straw doll flew up the waterfall for 56 meters and disappeared.
The priest built a kyoodan 経壇 kyodan platform for sutras in front of the Fudo Hall.
Since then it is called Kyodanbara 経壇原 Field of the Platform Sutra。

Around 1870, there was a great thunderstorm, hitting 巨杉 the great Sugi tree in the compound of 不動堂 the Fudo Hall, so it burned down.
From the ruins of the tree they found almost two buckets full of strange white bones.
People said it were the bones from the dragon who lived at the foot of the tree.

In former times there were no shishigashira 獅子頭 lion heads in 柳原集落 the Yanagihara hamlet.
In 1890, a villager from 稲沢集落 Inazawa hamlet had stolen the lion heads from Yanagihara, but he soon died.
The person whom he had given the lion heads also died.
A person who offered them to 不動堂 the Fudo Hall also died.

When a new family moved here, they were asked by 不動院 the temple Fudo-In wether they wanted onsen 温泉 hot water or just water.
They choose water and since then there is kiyomizu 清水 clear water coming out of their well.

. kitsune densetsu 狐と伝説 fox legends .
A servant went cutting weeds in the morning and did not come back.
When they asked at 不動院 the temple Fudo-In they were told he was bewitched by a fox.
The family put some azukimeshi 小豆飯 rice with red beans in the back of the home and next morning it was gone.
Six days later they found the man in the outskirts of the village.
He did not remember anything.

. Kankiten 歓喜天 Kangiten / Vinayaka Ganesh - Introduction .

The temple was founded in 1386 by 順誉上人 priest Shunyu to veneratethe special deity 歓喜天 Kankiten.
It was first located in 中村の里 Nakamura village.
In 1617 it was relocatet to the present place at the 袋町通 Fukuromachi street.

A statue of 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O is venerated in the Fudo Hall.

. Koomyooji 光明寺 Komyo-Ji Temple Legends .

Around 1550, at the Chokuganji Temple 御嶽山 Ontakezan 光明寺 Komyo-Ji (Dainichi-Ji 大日寺) there was a fire coming over from a nearby warfield and the statue of 大日如来 Dainichi Nyoarai was burried in the pond.
Later around 1655 the villagers of 長尾村 Nagao village had the statue excarvated under the supervision of 大島四郎兵衛久成 (大嶋四郎兵衛久成) Oshima Shirobei Hisanari, but the villagers from Nishiura came along and claimed it was their protector deity.
It came to a fight and Nishimura won, trying to take the statue with them.
But they could not lift the statue or move it.
When the villagers of Nagao village tried to lift it, it was light and they could take it.
Back home they build a hall for the statue, 大日堂 Dainichi Do and venerated the deity there.

Danburi chōja だんぶり長者 "Dragonfly Choja", "The Dragonfly Rich Man".
Once upon a time
there lived a very rich man, called Danburi chōja だんぶり長者 "Dragonfly Choja".
When he was young, he was just a normal farmer.
One day he took a nap at lunchtime, when a dragonfly dame down from the mountain and swirled around him.
His wife saw it and found it strange, but then he woke up.

He said he had drunk some delicious rice wine.
The couple went up to the mountain and found a well where rice wine was coming out.
Indeed, there was gold for them in the mountain!
Since then, he became a super rich man!
His home can be seen at the town of 湯瀬 Yuze.
Nearby is the 大日堂 Dainichi Do Hall to show his gratitude to the deity.
danburi 蜻蛉 is the local dialect for dragonfly.

The same legend it told in 秋田県 Akita, 鹿角郡 Kazuno district.

ishi no sei 石の精 the spirit of a stone
Every night there was a strange yokai 妖怪 monster at the bridge and the villagers were afraid.
Once a brave Samurai hit the monster with his sword.
Next morning they found a stone with a blue tinge at 大日堂 the Dainichi Do Hall crashed to pieces.

If someone had died, his family would go there to contact the dead via the Itako, be it man or woman.

The daughter of 桜井家 the Sakurai Family had married and lived at 大日堂 the Dainichi Do Hall.
She died at the age of 40.
That night hi no tama 火の玉 a ball of fire was seen by many neighbours falling on the roof.
They say it was the soul of the woman coming to inform her family about her fate.

駒込大観音 Komagome Dai Kannon / こまごめおおがんのん Oo-Kannon / 十一面観音像

The main statue is 阿弥陀如 Amida Nyorai.

The temple was founded in 1589 by 仙石秀久 Sengoku Hidehisa (1552 - 1614).
The Kannon Statue was carved on request of the rich merchant 丸屋吉兵衛 Maruya Yoshibei,
who had been on a pilgrimage to the Hasedera temple in Nara and wanted a similar large statue in Edo.
During the great earthquakes in 1855 and 1923 the temple hall was destroyed,
but the statue of Kannon was safe.
In 1945 on May 24 the temple and the statue were destroyed by the air raid.
After the war, a small statue of Kannon was placed on the old stone pedestal
but the people called it 駒込大観音 The Big Kannon of Komagome.
In 1993, the original large statue of Kannon was reconstructed.

ubume no yuurei 産女の幽霊 the ghost of a woman giving birth

Once in the evening someone knocked at the door of 飴屋 the sweet vendor.
When he opened, there was a young woman with a baby in her arms.
She bought some sweets and left.
She came every evening now and one night the owner followed her. They came to a well at a crossroads,
wher the woman drew some water, diluted the sweets and gave the water to her baby.
Then she went on to the graveyard of the temple 光源寺 Kogen-Ji, where she disappeared.
When they checked, they found a baby alive in her grave.

reimu 霊夢 a sacred dream
江戸の光源寺の境内にある稲荷に詣でた折に、めずらしい面を見つけた。家に帰ってもその面のことが気になっていたら、妻が不思議な夢を見たという。稲荷で工事が行われるので面が粗末にされない様持って帰るようにとのことだった。急いで光源寺に行ってみると、確かに工事中で、古い絵馬を積み上げた上に、くだんの面がのせてあった。妻の見た夢は神のお告げと思って、その面を持ち帰り、家の守護神としてまつった。望みがあって祈ると、非常に霊験あらたかであった。

Around 1600, 黒田長政 Kuroda Nagamasa was the first to pull the sunken bell out, but could not.
Later they tried again, but when they had pulled it out just a bit, there came a typhoon and the boat was crashed.
Another time they pulled it out until the ryuuto 龍頭 dragon head could be seen,
but then came a huge wave and smashed the village and the fields around.
At 鐘ケ崎 Kanegasaki (鐘崎 Kanzaki) on a fine day, pepole can see the sunken temple bell on the ocean floor.

At the riverpool 七曲りの渕 Nanamagari no fuchi there was a sunken bell and the villagers could not pull it out.
One villager mumbled: "If we ever get it out, we should give it to 松原の諏訪様 the Suwa Shrine at Matsubara."
Now all of a sudden they could pull it out and even now it is at the Suwa shrine at Matsubara.

Nagano 下伊那郡 Shimo-Ina district 天竜村 Tenryu village

. amagoi 雨乞いと伝説 Legends about rain rituals / Regenzauber .
The sunken bell at 釣鐘渕 the river pool Tsuriganefuchi had be pulled out and given to the local temple.
Since then there had been hideri 日照り a drought and the fields all dried up.
The villagers brought the bell back to the riverpool and performed a rain ritual.
It started to rain very soon.

The temple bell from 大照寺 Daisho-Ji was groaning one evening and then fell into the river.
The priest had a new bell made, but it also groaned and fell into the river.
Since then, the temple does not have a bell any more.

The temple bell, Benkei no hikitsuirgane, which was manufactured during the Nara period, is said to have been donated to the Mii-dera temple as an expression of gratitude to Fujiwara no Hidesato for the Extermination of the Centipede ("Mukade Taiji", a legendary episode) living on mount Mikamiyama.
The bell is also said to have been brought back from Ryu-gu, the underwater Palace of the Dragon King.
In the tenth century, during the succession disputes which broke out between Tendai monks, Benkei (a warrior monk, popular subject of Japanese folklore) took the bell away and dragged it up to the summit of mount Hiei. There, he tried to strike it and got mad when he heard it ringing "eeno eeno", which means "I want to go back" in the Kansai dialect.
Benkei then threw the bell down to the bottom of the valley.
The scars and cracks which can be seen on the bell are said to be traces of this episode.

The sound of the bell at this temple has been admired for its beauty in literature since ancient times.
In the Edo period the "Evening Bell from the Temple of Mii" was counted as one of the "Eight Views of Omi".

Once the temple bell from the 大日堂 Dainichi-Do hall had fallen down and nobody could find it - it had simple disappeared.
.
There was a bell at Ropponmatsu 六本松 "Six Pine Trees", but the local fishermen said it was disturbing and asked the officials to take it down. But it was not allowed. So the fishermen took it away secretely at night and threw it into a deep valley.
Later they could not find it any more, however much they searched.
.
Another bell had been thrown into a well and all the villagers wanted to pull it out again.
But every time when the bell was almost out, the thick rope ruptured and the bell fell back into the well.
Eventually they burried the well and made a memorial mound out of it.
