Once on a summer evening a man was on his way home from the mountain,
when it suddenly became light and he heard the sound of an ox cart from behind.
But when the road made another bend, he could not see anything and was back at the same spot.

Once upon a time, when the 藤原氏 Fujiwara clan thrived in Kyoto,
the 菅原氏 Sugawara clan leader used ushiguruma 牛車 an ox cart to flee from the city.
When he reached 室賀峠 the Muroga Toge pass the oxen had lost all its power and fell down dead.
The people burried the oxen with rituals and classical poetry, and thus the animal turned into a stone.
It is now venerated as a deity for teeth and mouth diseases.
A special ritual is held on doyoo no ushi no hi 土用の丑の日 the day of the oxen in late-summer
to keep its spiritual power alive.

Gakuenji 鰐淵寺 Gakuen-Ji, Izumo
浮浪山 Furozan 一乗院 Ichijo-In 鰐淵寺 Gakuenji

島根県出雲市別所町148 / Shimane, Izumo city, Bessho town

The main statue is Kannon Bosatsu.

- quote -
Gakuen Temple is Izumo's representative temple.
The famous old temple was founded in 594.
It is the most renowned spot in the prefecture for autumn foliage, and is superb in late autumn when the temple grounds are bathed in deep crimson as far as the eye can see.
The annual "Autumn Foliage Festival" draws a large number of worshippers from inside and outside the prefecture.
Long ago it was widely known as one of the Shugendo religion's sacred sites, deep in the mountains.
There are a large number of other things worth seeing in the area also, including a waterfall, Buddhist statues, paintings, and calligraphic works.
A festival is also held at the temple on the last Sunday in April every year.br />
At the start of the publication '42 Ura no Koritori uta', the Forty-two Bay pilgrimage book of songs, there is reference to the famed 'warrior monk', Musashibō Benkei.
What's the connection between Benkei and the Forty-two Bay Pilgrimage? It's the renowned San'in region temple, Furousan Gakuenji. The temple is part of the Tendai school of Buddhism. According to temple records, it is said to have been founded by the monk Chishun Shonin during the reign of Empress Suiko (592-628). Strangely enough, there is no mention of the temple in the Izumo Fudoki (ancient records of Izumo, compiled in the year 733). However, among the temple treasures is the bronze Kannon Bodhisattva statue dating back to the 6th year of the reign of Empress Jito (692). This indicates just how long Gakuenji has been in existence.
The syncretic sect Shugen, which combines various elements such as mountain worship, esoteric Buddhism, and ascetic practices was common particularly around the Furou Waterfall. Then, over time, it spread and developed following the integration of the Kannon and Yakushi beliefs.
In the Heian Period (794-1185), under the doctrines established by the Tendai founder, Jikaku Daishi, Gakuenji became a branch temple. During the Kamakura Period, syncretism with Izumo Ōyashiro was established and the temple achieved new heights of prosperity under its status as a 'betto-ji' (a temple attached to a shrine conducting Shinto rituals in accordance with Buddhist practices).
Legend has it that Benkei was born in Nagami, on the north shores of Lake Nakaumi, east of Matsue. He is said to have engaged in ascetic disciplines at Kezoji Temple of Mt. Makuragisan , Chosuiji Temple in Fukuhara, and here in Gakuenji. It's as if the footing left by the young Benkei during his strict training became the course through the mountains on the Forty-two Bay Pilgrimage route. Could the relationship between Benkei and the Koritoriuta have come from so far a point?
Today, in Nagami , the spirit of Benkei can be felt in the roadside station, Honjou, a rest area dedicated to the legend of its famous son.
Pilgrimage Route Guide
When visiting Gakuenji in the autumn, the trees had already shed their leaves. It brought to mind the poet Basho's farewell verse , " Falling ill on a journey, wandering dreams, desolate fields of dried grass and leafless trees." Without foliage in the foreground, it was easy to imagine how the temple must have looked in its glory days , with each section of the building arranged in orderly rows.
The magnificence of the main hall of Gakuenji equals that of temples in Kyoto and Nara, all of which rightly deserve to be referred to as 'kosatsu', a term of reverence accorded to old temples.
On a raised area to the left of the main hall is Mataira Jinja Shrine. Unlike Nara where shrines are always found clearly partitioned from temples within the temple grounds, one is able to truly feel the concept of 'Buddhist/Shinto syncretism' here.
In addition, Edo period temple architecture and abundant treasures can be found within the grounds of Gakuenji. Archaeological excavations have unearthed well-preserved features and relics which exemplify the prosperity enjoyed here during the Middle Ages. This won approval for Gakuenji, as a representative mountain-forest temple of the Chugoku region, to be designated a National Historic Site on March 1st, 2016.

- quote - By Vicki L Beyer -
A fun and popular New Year's activity in Japan is going on a short pilgrimage to honor the seven lucky gods, a traditional symbol of fortune for the new year. New Year's weather is usually fine, lending itself to a little outdoor jaunt and these walks are relatively short -- usually taking only a few hours. The tradition began during the Edo Period (1603-1868) as a way to secure good fortune for the coming year by completing the pilgrimage early in the new year.
There are over 200 such pilgrimage courses across Japan. This year, I recommend one in Tsurumi, a northern ward of Yokohama. Much of the route travels along or near the old Tokkaido road, one of the historic roads linking Kyoto and old Edo (now Tokyo), and takes visitors to small obscure shrines and temples as well as a major religious center. This is an area off the beaten track for foreigners, but easy, accessible, and historic. The walk can be completed in less than three hours, although you may want to devote the entire day to give yourself time to stop and enjoy other sights along the way. I've prepared a map to help.
Most pilgrimages offer pilgrims the opportunity to acquire a memento of their journey. For this pilgrimage, from Jan 4 through Jan 12, 2019 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), you can purchase a printed sheet at your first stop for the modest investment of 100 yen. At each of the seven destinations, there will be a special stamp that you then stamp across the printed name of that shrine or temple, evidence that you have been there (no additional charge). Don't worry that it's in Japanese -- an attendant or your fellow pilgrims will help you stamp over the correct name at each location.
Tsurumi sits between the old Tokaido post towns of Kawasaki and Kanagawa.

This old temple built in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) is also known as Hebikubo Shrine.
Also known as ""The White Snake of Tokyo,"" it has the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami as its main enshrined deity.
This is due to the story of a white snake that had once settled in a pond and appeared in a dream begging to be returned to its original home. This led to the establishment of Bentensha Shrine, where the white snake is enshrined.
Shrines dedicated to dragon gods and white snakes are said to be ""mi ga tatsu"" (written using the characters for snake and dragon, but pronounced the same as the expression for ""standing up""), and are reputed to be places to pray for success in life.
Other sacred virtues of this Tokyo power spot include warding off disaster and inviting good luck, prosperity in business, safety of one's family and physical health.
