shirase 報知 notification of a death
If there is a funeral, it is held at 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji
and notifications are sent to the relatives, friends and other villagers.
This acitvity is called shirase 報知（しらせ).
There must always be two people to bring the sad news around.

shi no yochoo 死の予兆 an omen of death
In the village Marumori was a man named 大内 Ouchi who had just come there.
The became very ill and on the day before his death he went to a temple
wearing official robes of 羽織袴姿 Haori and Hakama.

The carpenters working at the temple saw him and found this very strange.
A person can thus go to 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji when he dies, but he never comes back.

Around 1700, the child of 坂本宇兵衛 Sakamoto Uhei, a vassal of 伊達宗重 Date Muneshige (1615 - 1671)
loved the cats and chicken of the family.
One night in autumn, the chicken made a call late in the night.
The owner thought this an ominous call and killed the chicken, throwing it into the nearby river.
That night, the chicken appeared in a dream of the priest of 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji of the Sakamoto family.
"I am the chicken of the Sakamoto Family.
The cat of this family wanted to use poison to kill the master of the family, so I begun to make noise to wake him,
but I was killed instead. Now I want you, the priest, to tell him the truth."
The next morning, the priest went to the family, where the head was just preparing a bowl of soup.
At that moment, the cat jumped in from outside, put something in the bowl and run away.
The head did not see it and put the bowl to his mouth to drink.
The priest hastily stopped him and told him about his dream.
They looked in the bowl and found the head of a poisonous lizzard.
Now the head wanted to kill the cat, but the cat never came back to the house.
Uhei felt remorse for killing the chicken and had a special ritual held in its honor.

yuurei 幽霊 a Yurei ghost
Late at night at the ferry place, a strange voice of a woman was heard from the other side of the river.
When the boatman went over, there was nobody. But he said anyway "Come into the boat".
The boat became more heavy, as if someone had come in.
On the other side, he said to get off, and the boat became lighter again.
When the boatsman wanted a greeting from this visitor, he suddenly saw
a head with a rope hanging around the neck, the eyeballs sticking out and long wet hair hanging down.
The spooky woman asked him to go to 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji and then disappeared.

Kaga no Kami 加賀守 The Lord of Kaga
The grave of the Kaga no Kami 加賀守 the Lord of Kaga was in the compound of the ruins of
下瀬山城址 the castle Shimonoseyama. But it was destroyed by a villain.
The villagers built a new grave, but did not hold any rituals.
The priest from 三渡八幡宮 Miwatari Hachimangu came and asked to perform a ritual, otherwise the lord might be angry.
The villagers decided to follow this advise and held a special ritual at 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji

. Oinusama 御犬様 O-Inusama, "Honorable Wolf Deity" .
The daughter of the village headman had fallen in love with the priest of 菩提寺 the Family Temple Bodai-Ji.
They soon became the rumor of the village and the priest was sent to a different temple.
The daughter climbed steep mountains and gorges to meet the priest again.
On the roadside was a wolf with a thorn in his leg.
She bent down to help him.
To show his gratitude, the wolf then accompanied her all the way.

At Asakusa there was a man who had been ill for a long time.
He went to 菩提寺 a different Family Temple Bodai-Ji to aks for his funeral.
The head priest agreed.
He did not get better and went again to ask for his funeral at this Bodai-Ji.
The priest thought his was strange and when he investigated the case,
he found that the man had died the night before.

If a person dies, his soul goes to his Bodaiji 菩提寺 Family Temple.
There must always be two to bring the dead body there.

- Yearly Festivals 年中行事 -

毎年八月三日に施餓鬼会 Segaki-E on August 3 every year.

The segaki (施餓鬼, "feeding the hungry ghosts")

is a ritual of Japanese Buddhism, traditionally performed to stop the suffering of the such restless ghosts/monsters as gaki, jikininki and the muenbotoke (the dead who have no living relatives), ghosts tormented by insatiable hunger.
Alternatively, the ritual forces them to return to their portion of hell or keeps the spirits of the dead from falling into the realm of the gaki.
The segaki may be performed at any time, but traditionally performed as part of the yearly Urabon'e services in July to remember the dead and the segaki ritual for offering alms to specifically hungry gaki or muenbotoke, not for spirits of one's ancestor.
The ritual is held at Buddhist temples and there is a custom to place segaki-dana (rack for gaki) or gaki-dana (shelf for gaki) at home, present offerings (traditionally rice and water) for hungry ghosts who are wandering in this world as muenbotoke during Urabon'e or O-bon.

By now, the Kappa had run away.

Once the daughter of the Lord of 信夫城 the Shinobu castle took the statue of 薬師 Yakushi Nyorai
and climbed 女神山 the mountain Megamiyama (Mountain of the Female Deity).
Villagers from 18 families joined her. They saw her place the statue in a small hall.
Back home they decided to build a real 薬師堂 Hall for Yakushi Nyorai.

shinmei sama しんめい様 / 神明 the Deity Shinmei Sama
At 薬師堂 the Temple Yakushi-Do in 大宮村木伏 Omiya village, Kippushi hamlet,
there is a statue of the deity 神明 Shinmei Sama.
If someone in the village gets ill, the priest of the temple takes it to them.
In the box there is a male and a female deity. Their robes are luxurious.
If someone has a headace or stiff shoulders, or children are crying a lot, they come here to get healed.
The festival of Yakushi is on April 8.
The festival for Shinmei Sama is on June 10.

At 蚕飼薬師堂 the Temple Kogai Yakushi-Do there is an ema 絵馬 amulet with a horse.
At night, the horse, painted by 狩野法眼 Kano Hogen, gets of the painting and devastates the fields nearby.
They painted some reins on the horse and it stopped leaving.

At 薬師堂 the Temple Yakushi-Do on the island 江ノ島 Enoshima,
樋爪俊衡 Hizume Toshihira, a warior of the Heian period, is enshrined.
The Yakushi does not like dogs or chicken.
If someone on the island eats them, people will have bad luck.

Soon there came another small horse and became bigger.
He was so afraid that he run away as fast as he could.

The nure-onna ヌレオンナ a wet woman often appears in the Aso region.
She is a monster with wet hair. She lures people and drinks their blood.
People think it is a middle-aged serpent.
She is often seen at 薬師堂 the Temple Yakushi-Do near the 栃木温泉 Tochigi hot spring.

Once 薬師堂 the Temple Yakushi-Do burned down in a huge fire, even the meadows nearby burned.
But one small building did not burn.
When they later investigated, they found that the statue of Yakushi Nyorai was in the hall.
They say the statue of Yakushi Nyorai walked over there all by itself.

arabiru kamisama あらびる神様 a wild deity
Once upon a time, there was a very wild Deity in the area, disturbing the villagers.
The villagers put the deity in the ground and built 薬師堂 a Yakushi-Do hall above it.
The villagers had feared this "wild deity" and even now
if someone touches the earth below the hall, he will be cursed.

In 薬師堂 the Temple Yakushi-Do there is an old cherry tree.
When Priest Saigyo Hoshi came to the village, he jammed his walking staff in the ground near the lake,
where it begun to grow.

Healthy people will never get an eye disease.
But now there is no more water in the well.

The Yakushi statue is a local cultural treasure.
The main statue is 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O.

ひらやまの医王の慈悲をおろがみて今も変わらぬ法の灯てらす

The temple was founded in 1588 by 堯珍法師 Priest Gyochin.
During the upheavel of the Christians in Nagasaki it was burned down.
Gyochin saved two arrows and fled to 島原領湯江 Shimabara Yue.
Hh founded a retreat in 船越村 Funakoshi village, where he founded a temple named
平山山平等院平仙寺 Heisenzan Byodo-In Heisen-Ji.
It became the family temple of 諫早家 the Isahaya clan.
There were also many small Shinto Shrines in the compound.
During 明治維新 the Meiji Restauration Shrines and Temples were sepatated
and the influence of the Isahaya clan waned.
The temple could only keep 4 small Sub-Temples.
Then there was a fire and only one small hall survived.
In 1945 there was a land reform and the temple lost all its fields.
In 1967 亮締師 could buy back some of the land and built 本堂 a new Main Hall.
The head priest family is now in the 27th generation.

Enichizan Kannon-ji belongs to Shingon sect of Buddhism and is one of the three biggest Kannon temples in Japan.
The main statue is a hibutsu (hidden Buddhist statue) Shō Kannon (Sacred Kannon).
It also has many cultural properties in its possession.
Since its founding in 709 Enichizan Kannon-ji was very popular among people of Tsu.
Later on it also became popular all over the country as a Kannon that answers all prayers.
Many devoted believers were coming especially to pray for safety at the sea.
In Muromachi period (1336-1573) shogun 足利義教 Ashikaga Yoshinori (1394-1441), following the Emperor's command,
built a three-storied pagoda.
In the 16th Century the second "Great Unifier" of Japan 豊臣秀吉 Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598)
would visit Enichizan Kannon-ji and pray for a victory each time he was going to battle.
In the 17th Century since the times of the 2nd shogun of Edo period Tokugawa Hidetada (1579-1632)
the temple was protected and supported by all Tokugawa clan shoguns and daimyos of the Tsu province – the Tōdō clan.
It would be their special praying place until the 19th Century.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which restored the actual power to the Emperor,
Enichizan Kannon-ji lost its protectors and went back to its original shape – a prayer ground for common people.
Since then temple became a popular center of worship and place of local entertainment.

The complex consists of:
観音堂、五重塔、仁王門、鐘楼堂、護摩堂、資料館、収蔵庫、手水屋形
the Kannon Hall, Five-storied Pagoda, the Main Gate (Niō Gate), the Bell Tower,
the Goma Hall (Goma/Homa fire ritual Hall), Archives, Storage Room, Hand Purification Place and 大宝院 the Daihō-in cloister.
Daihō-in was a cloister connected to the imperial family
and since the times of 後花園天皇 Emperor Gohanazono (1419-1471)
prayers for each Emperor were done within its walls.
Currently it stands on the western side of Kannon Hall and is used as temple's office building.
The main statue worshiped in the Main Hall is Buddha Amida (Buddha of Infinite Light) and it is known as
国府阿弥陀 Kokufu Amida (Amida of the Provincial Government).
There is an old saying:
If you don't pay your respects to Amida, then your Ise pilgrimage is only half-way done.
It suggests that Buddha Amida of Enichizan Kannon-ji was considered a Buddhist manifestation (honjibutsu)
of Shinto Goddess Amaterasu (the Goddess of the Sun).

The main statue is Kannon Bosatsu.

The temple was founded in 1615 by 秀盛 Hidemori.
In 1910 it was flooded and the priests put barrels under the floor to place the Kannon Statue.
The temple has two tsurigane 釣鐘 temple bells.
During WWII when metal was collected, the bells were given away.
But they were not melted after all and came back to the temple 40 years later.
The statue of Fudo Myo-O is venerated in the Main Hall.
The temple became Nr. 36 of the Adachi Pilgrimage in 1957.

The Kannon statue is 千手観音菩薩 Senju Kannon.

Senju-in Kenmyō-ji is a temple number 1 of Ichishi district's 33 Temples Pilgrimage and is commonly known as Kannon of Senju-in. It is directly connected to Enryaku-ji – the main temple of Sanmon branch of Tendai Buddhist sect.
Senju-in Kenmyō-ji was founded in 730 by 行基 Gyōki (668-749), a famous monk who traveled around Japan to preach to commoners.
The main statue enshrined in the temple is Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) carved by ancient Buddhist image maker Kasuga. This Senju Kannon is honorably called 救世千手大悲観音菩薩 "Most Compassionate Savior".
The temple flourished for more than 600 years until the battle of 雲出川 Kumozu river in 1338, when all buildings were burned down. In 1366 北畠顕能 Kitabateke Akiyoshi (1326-1383), the provincial governor of Ise, rebuilt the Main Hall and other surrounding buildings as a proof of his deep religious devotion to Goddess Kannon enshrined in this temple. Since then Senju-in Kenmyō-ji became a prayer place for the next generations of Kitabatake clan and thanks to their patronage, the temple's authority had also been restored.
200 years later during the times of Tenshō period (1573-1592) the temple suffered again. This time the buildings burned down during the fight between the troops of the first "Great Unifier" of Japan daimyo Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) and local daimyo Kitabatake Tomonori (1528-1576).
Luckily the main statue of the temple was left unharmed.
The complex was restored once again in the years between 1624 and 1644.
The abbot of Senju-in Kenmyō-ji named 実順 Jitsujun rebuilt the burned buildings with donations and offerings received for his religious activity. In 1670 藤堂高通 Tōdō Takamichi (1644-1697) became a daimyo of this land and as a proof of deep devotion to Goddess Kannon of Senju-in Kenmyō-ji, he decided to make this temple a prayer place for Tōdō clan and donate 100 koku (15t) of rice each year.
In 1719 a monk of this temple 智空 Chikū received and imperial order to pray to Goddess Kannon and ask for a child to be born to the Emperor Nakamikado (1702-1737). Chikū prayed eagerly and as a result of his religious practice a Prince (later know as 桜町天皇 Emperor Sakuramachi, 1720-1750) was born on New Year's Day of the following year.
A transcription of the Heart Sutra and a calligraphy written by Emperor Nakamikado himself were sent to the temple and offered at the altar. Emperor also added a poem:

君がためうつしてうふるくれ竹に千代もこもれる心地こそすれ
I wish that the bamboo I planted for you will protect you for eternity.

Since that moment Senju-in Kenmyō-ji became a temple connected to the Emperor and was bestowed with a crest.
During the Meiji Restoration in 1868,
which restored the actual power to the Emperor, all temple's earnings were confiscated and almost all of the buildings including the Imperial Mausoleum, Imperial Quarters for Flower Viewing and Treasure Hall were destroyed.
The temple fell into ruin and was left only with the Main Hall and the Main Gate.
The current Main Hall of Senju-in Kenmyō-ji is a building rebuilt in 1917.

The temple was founded in 830 by . Kobo Daishi Kukai 弘法大師　空海 .
The temple was revived by 後鳥羽天皇 Emperor Gotoba Tenno (1180 - 1239).
The temple was enlarged by 宥明法印 Priest Hiroaki in 1473.
When the nearby hot spring suddenly dried out in 1473, Hiroaki prayed to Yakushi Nyorai to bring it back.

In the compound is 如意輪観音堂 a Hall for Nyoirin Kannon.

Also called Gachirin Mon 月輪門（がちりんもん） Gate like the full moon.
The stone gate was built in 1804 by a mason called 甚吉 Jinkichi.
