The fishermen thought this was a special gift from the Gods
And since Saint Gyoki was in the region, they asked him to make a statue.
He made one cut, said three prayers and made the next cut
in a special ritual, 一刀三礼 itto sanrai.
Gyoki made two statues of Yakushi Nyorai.
One is in this temple, the other is in a temple in Musashino (Kanto region).
There was also a special well 薬師湯, where hot healing water came from.

In 1682 the Temple was revitalized by 範順僧侶 Priest Banjun.
The present head priest is in the 23nd generation.

The Kannon statue is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon.

- quote
According to the legend Daifukuden-ji was founded by
a famous politician and promoter of Buddhism 聖徳太子 Prince Shōtoku (574-622).
It was called Daijingū-ji and originally stood in 伊勢山田 Ise Yamada.
The temple was directly connected to the Ise Shrine and was visited by Emperor Tenmu (631-686),
Empress Jitō (645-703) and 聖武天皇 Emperor Shōmu (701-756) during their travels to Ise.
In Tenchō period (824-834) it became a practice ground for Shingon school of Buddhism
after Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi, 774-835), the founder of Shingon sect,
taught the principles of Esoteric Buddhism during his visit.
In the times of Emperor Junna (786-840) the temple was chosen as an official place
that would pray for the Emperor. 宇多天皇 Emperor Uda (867-931) also visited Daijingū-ji during his travels
and used to stay at the abbot's chambers.
Since his visit the official name of the temple was changed to 法皇院 Hōkō-in (Cloistered Emperor's Temple).
In 1052 冷泉天皇 Emperor Goreizei (1025-1068) organized a mass chanting of sutras by 1000 monks in the temple.
The prayer was conducted together with a ritual offering of a wand with hemp and paper streamers to Ise Shrine.
Until the mid-19th Century Daifukuden-ji was officially praying
for each generation of the Emperor and for the Imperial family members.
Because of that the temple was allowed to use the Imperial family crest – a chrysanthemum.
During the Kōan period (1278-1289) the temple burned down.
It was rebuilt in the Kambe (currently Daifuku) area of Kuwana
thanks to the cooperation of the official of the Ise Shrine
and a protector of Yamato province 額田部実澄 Nukatabe no Sanezumi (he was a descendant of
Kadokane – developer and landowner of Kuwana Kambe area), and Ninshō,
a monk and founder of Gokuraku-ji temple in Sagami province.
Emperor Gouda (1267-1324) donated new land to the temple,
made it his official praying place and gave it a new name – 福田寺 Fukuden-ji.
It earned respect of Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358),
the founder and first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate,
and was given a new character meaning "big, great" to add to its name.
Since that moment the temple's official name became Daifukuden-ji.
During the Meiō period (1492-1501) Daifukuden-ji countless times
suffered from fires caused by war and at one point it fell into ruin.
The temple was rebuilt as a complete seven-structured temple compound in 1501,
after its abbot Eiki gathered donations around the country.
In 1503 its main statue was also remade and enshrined.
Thanks to the official document issued by the Imperial house in 1567
and prohibiting anyone from entering the temple's grounds,
Daifukuden-ji was speared during the battles between 1570 and 1592.
However due to impoverishment of the surrounding lands, the temple had fallen into decay again.
In the following years the temple's buildings were flooded many times,
that is why in 1662 the abbot named Shinnin decided to move the temple to its current location.
There are two halls in the temple.
The one seen up front when entering the temple through the main gate is the Main Hall.
Inside Buddha Amida (Buddha of Infinite Light), also called Hiki Amida (Pulled Amida),
is enshrined as the main statue. There are also three statues of his attendants:
Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon), Shō Kannon (Sacred Kannon),
Bodhisattva Monju (Bodhisattva of Supreme Wisdom), and a statue of Kūkai.
On the south side of the Main Hall stands the Hall of Prayers.
There are two statues inside, a personal statue of Kuwana province daimyo
松平定信 Matsudaira Sadanobu (1759-1829)
depicting Shōten (Kankiten, Ganesha, a god of conjugal harmony and long life),
and a statue of bad luck expelling Fudō Myō-ō (Immovable Wisdom King).
Daifukuden-ji is visited by many people during the days of the temple's festival known as Shōten of Kuwana.
The festival is held on the 1st and 16th day of every month.
Daifukuden-ji has many treasures in its possession.
Among them a Hassō Jōdō Ezu (painting of the eight major events in the life of the Buddha Shaka)
form Kamakura period (1192-1333), a painting titled 當山再建勧進縁起 Tōzan Saiken Kanjin Engi
(Story of preaching and reconstruction of Daifukuden-ji)
created by 三条西実隆 Sanjōnishi Sanetaka in Muromachi period (1333-1573), and
忍性上人自画像 Ninshō Shōnin Jigazō (Self portrait of the Holy priest Ninshō),
which are all designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
The statue of Shō Kannon is also called 合せ観音 Awase Kannon (Joint Kannon).
According to the legend Goddess Amaterasu (Goddess of the Sun) and
Kasuga Myōjin (the deity of Kasuga Shrine in Nara) decided to send a divination
and ask two Korean Buddhist sculptors – brothers 稽文會と稽主勲 Kei Mone and Kei Shukun,
to each make a half of a statue of Shō Kannon and bring it to Japan.
They did as asked and both of them met at the riverbank of Miyagawa river,
each carrying a half of a statue.
When they tried to join the halves, they discovered that they match perfectly.
It is said that this statue of Joint Shō Kannon was created according to the joint will
of two Shinto gods – Goddess Amaterasu and Kasuga Myōjin.
Daifukuden-ji is a temple number 1 of Mie Shikoku 88 Temples Pilgrimage
and one of the Ise Seven Temples of Luck enshrining Daikoku
(God of Wealth, Farmers, Food, and Good Fortune).

- Chant of the temple
Washinokura is where I take off my pilgrim's vest

今まではおやとたのみしおひづるを脱て納むるわしのくらにて(

- quote
The history of Tado Kannon-dō starts in 763, when a monk called 満願禅師 Mangan (720-816)
built a practice ground in the 鷲の倉 Washinokura area east of Tado Shrine.
He enshrined a 4.85m high statue of Buddha, prayed and practiced.
One night he got a divination from Amatsuhikone, a Shinto god
and a 3rd son of Goddess of the Sun Amaterasu, and was told to build a temple.
Mangan traveled around the area and gathered donations.
When he got enough he went back to Washinokura, built a hall and
enshrined Amatsuhikone as a Bodhisattva Tado in it.
Soon a bell tower with a bronze bell was donated by a district headman 水取月足 Mizutori Tsukitari,
and a three-storied pagoda was founded by 主新麻呂 Agatanushi Nimaro from Mino province.
With these three buildings the basic structure of a Buddhist temple was finished.
In 780 by the order of the Emperor a monk called 法教禅師 Hōkyō was chosen to expand the temple.
In 781 Hōkyō started a preaching tour to gather donations
around four provinces: Ise, Mino, Owari and Shima.
Next he built a Lecture Hall and living quarters for monks.
Then he gathered ritual objects, tools and other necessary items.
The temple started to function properly and soon it received donation in form of rice fields and land.
In 839 the Emperor decided to make it a sub-temple of Tendai school.
In 849 the temple changed the school to Shingon and was given a name Hōun-ji.
Hōun-ji appears in the 10th Century book about laws and customs 延喜式 Engishiki (Procedures of the Engi Era, 905),
which was edited by 藤原時平 Fujiwara no Tokihira.
It states: Hōun-ji will be treated as a Provincial sub-temple, and there are 10 monks
who received the official certificates from the government.
The temple grew and flourished.
The 16th Century abbot of the temple reported that Hōun-ji consists of more than 70 sub-temples
and more than 300 monks live in its precinct.
The temple was not only a place of prayer, but also a school for many young monks and a cultural center of the area. In Kamakura period (1192-1333), between the years of 1211 and 1213,
the temple was set on fire by a group of thieves that burst into it.
In 1489 due to the Nankai earthquake a landslide occurred at the mountain.
As a result Hōun-ji temple was buried in the ground.
But according to the records kept by a clan of 多度大社 Tado Shrine priests – 小串氏 the Ogushi clan,
the temple was rebuilt and between 1532 and 1555 more than 70 sub-temples operated in its precinct.
Not long after Jōdo Shinshū school Buddhsits from Nagashima started an uprising against the samurai class
and especially Oda Nobunaga (later regarded as the first "Great Unifier" of Japan).
They even made special prayers at Tado Shrine to curse their enemy.
In 1571 Oda Nobunaga's army led by 柴田勝家 Shibata Katsuie and 氏家常陸介 Ujiie Naomoto
marched in this area and burned all buildings belonging to Tado Shrine and Hōun-ji temple.
The temple and the shrine ceased to exist in the end of the 16th Century.
Their land was confiscated as a result of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's nationwide land survey. In the beginning of 17th Century the daimyo of Kuwana province 本多忠勝 Honda Tadakatsu (1548-1610)
revived the Tado Shrine. In 1617 the next daimyo 松平定勝 Matsudaira Sadakatsu (1560-1624)
brought an altar of 愛宕神 Shinto deity Atago (a protector against fires) from Kakegawa in Tōtōmi province
and placed it in the shrine.
In 1653 a monk named 良心法師 Ryōshin, the new abbot of Hōun-ji,
gathered donations and managed to rebuild the temple.
It was placed in Tado Shrine jurisdiction.
At the beginning of Meiji period (1868-1912) Hōun-ji temple was closed
due to the new law ordering the separation of Buddhism and Shinto (shinbutsu bunri).
A new Kannon Hall was built at the river bank of 落葉川 Ochiba river, a sacred river of Tado Shrine,
and two statues of Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon) and
Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) were enshrined inside.
In 1900 due to severe rain fall the Kannon Hall was washed away.
In the following year a new smaller hall was built in its place
and two surviving statues were once again enshrined inside.
In 1905 the current Kannon Hall was rebuilt
and new ritual objects were place inside thanks to donations of the worshipers.

Hichooji 飛鳥寺 Hicho-Ji, Fukaya
雨尾山 Amaozan 味光院 Ajiko-In 飛鳥(ひちょう)寺 (Asukadera)
三重県桑名市深谷町2386 / Mie, Kuwana city, Fukaya

The Kannon statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu.

- Chant of the temple
Despite the strong rainy storm in the Amao Mountain,
the birds come down flying from afar.

- quote -
Hichō-ji temple stands in Yamanoshiro area of Fukaya district in Kuwana city.
It lies on the highland from which a wide view of Kiso river, Nagara river, Ibi river,
Nagoya city, 濃尾平野 Nōbi plain and 御嶽 Mount Ontake can all be seen.
There are many Buddhist statues enshrined at the temple.
The main statue worshiped in Hichō-ji is a 181cm high Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Faced Kannon).
The other statues are:
statue of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi, 774-835, the founder of Shingon sect),
Dainichi Nyorai (Great Illuminating Buddha), Zenkō-ji style triad of Buddha Amida (Buddha of Infinite Light),
Batō Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon), Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon),
Koyasu Jizō (Bodhisattva Jizō who looks over children),
Fudō Myō-ō (Immovable Wisdom King).
The portrait of Kūkai, which is one of the temple's treasures, is registered as Kuwana city Cultural Property.
In ancient time Hichō-ji stood in 坊ヶ谷 Bōgatani valley within Fukaya village grounds.
It was a famous Shingon school temple with 99.2ha of land and 12 sub-temples within its precinct.
Unfortunately many of its buildings, statues, sutras and documents were lost in a fire in 1571,
during the fights of the first "Great Unifier" of Japan Oda Nobunaga's troops with the local daimyo.
In 1635 the Lord of Kuwana castle 松平定綱 Matsudaira Sadatsuna (1592-1652) visited the area.
When he heard about Hichō-ji's past, he became sad and decided to donate rice fields to the temple.
Since 1660 the grandson of Sadatsuna – 松平定重 Matsudaira Sadashige (1644-1717)
every year donated money for the prayer.
In 1702 a samurai of Kuwana province called 南条三太左衛門宗親 Nanjō Santazaemon Munechika
climbed Mount Amao in search for a good place to enshrine a statue of Bodhisattva Jizō.
He obtained the statue some time before at Nishida village in Tamba province.
In the hut standing among the ruins of the old Hichō-ji temple Munechika discovered
a head of the Jūichimen Kannon statue buried in the ground.
The rest of the body was burned during the wars of 16th Century.
He found it strange and astonishing, so he decided to hire a Buddhist sculptor from Kyoto
and remake the lost part of the statue.
When the statue of the Goddess Kannon was finished he built a hall to enshrine her and living quarters for monks.
The statue of Bodhisattva Jizō, which Munechika was planning to enshrine,
was eventually placed at the Hichō-ji's temporary hall in Okujō part of Fukaya village.
Since the restoration of the temple more than 100 samurai families from Kuwana province
were donating rice every month.
In 1869 the temple from Mount Amao and the Jizō Hall from the village were moved to the current location.
The reason was to make it easier for the believers to visit.
The temple is holding number 32 of Ise Saikoku Kannon Pilgrimage
and as such is very popular among worshipers and pilgrims alike.
According to the inscription on the stone monument, Mount Amao (Mount of the Rain Slope),
the name of the mountain on which Hichō-ji used to stand,
comes from a legendary pot that belonged to Tō-ji temple in Kyoto.
This old pot was called 雨壺 Amatsubo (Rain Pot) and the monks would pour water into it
and start to pray every time a drought occurred.
Next they would scoop the water and sprinkle it around.
It is said that when the drops would hit the ground it would immediately start to rain.
