Chofukuji
757 / Chiba, Isumi city, Shimobuse

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.
The statue was made in the Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573).
During a fire in the Edo period, the face and many parts of the body became black.
The halo behind the statue was made in the Edo period.
Beside the main statue are two kneeling deities,
Seishi Bosatsu.

The statue of 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai is 101 cm high.
At his side are statues of
Bishamon Ten.

The temple was founded in 807 by 伝教大師 Dengyo Daishi.
. Saicho, Dengyo Daishi
It burned down many times, so not many records from old times remain.
When 源頼朝 Minamoto no Yoritomo stayed at the temple and wrote a letter,
he used suzuri 硯 an inkstone, which was very beautiful.
So he gave the temple the name 硯山 Suzuriyama "Inkstone Temple".
In the compound was a huge maki no ki 槙の木 Maki pine tree
where Yoritomo placed his writing brush and thus the tree was called
fudekake no maki 筆掛の槙 "Maki pine tree where the brush was placed".

Yoritomo also had a black horse 磨墨 which he loved much,
and when it died, they built 磨墨の墓 a stone marker on its grave.

At the temple gate are two statues of 仁王 Nio.
If people rub their legs or other parts of their hurting body, they will get healed.
ashi sasuri no Nio-Sama

In the Edo period, this powerful temple had many sub-temples and many parishioners.

Ueno Yamashita

Located around today's Ueno Station, Ueno Yamashita was one of Edo's entertainment districts
that developed from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.
The earliest entertainment district in Japan was 両国界隈 the area around Ryōgoku,
and this was then followed by 浅草寺界隈 the Sensō-ji Temple neighborhood,
Edobashi Hirokōji.
The area was extremely lively with street performers gathering and show tents being set up,
and people would flock to the area all year round.

EDO uma ichi horse market

- quote

Uma Ichi was a horse market that was held in mid-December every year.
Traders would bring 100-150 南部駒 nanbukoma horses aged two or three
from the Nanbu domain to trade at the market.
In Yabunouchi, there were three horse dealerships which worked for the stables of the Nanbu clan.
The horse market used to be held in three locations,
which were Fuchū Rokusho-no-miya, Asakusa, and Azabujūban,
but it ceased being held in Fuchū Rokusho-no-miya Shrine during the Kyōho years (1716-1736),
and it was subsequently held only in 浅草薮の内 Asakusa Yabunouchi and 麻布十番 Azabujūban.
The location of the horse market pictured is in what is today 花川戸 Hanakawado 2 chōme, Taitō-ku.
