西蒲原郡 Nishi-Kanbara district 巻町 Maki town

The villagers come together at 仙蔵院 the Temple Senzo-In to make a large rope serpent of straw and sand bales.
This rope is hung at the main hall and the head priest performs a rain ritual.
Then they carry the rope around, blowing a conch and beating drums
until they reach 上堰潟 the Uwaseki lagoon.
They throw the rope in the water and go home.
Now the large serpent seems to call the rain clouds and soon it begins to rain.

The priest of the temple 仙蔵院 Senzo-In had been bewitched by a fox.

Located at Akarusan 閼伽流山 Mount Akaru.

The Kannon Statue used to be at 親沢 Oyazawa.
If the door of the hall was left open, the Kannon got out and walked to the swamp.
Therefore the door is never opened and the statue is called "Kannon behind a door that is not opened".

The temple was founded as a clan temple in 1616 by 藤堂高虎 Lord Todo Takatora (1556 - 1630),
who had come from 今治藩 Imabari to 伊勢津 Tsu in Ise.
It is a special 祈祷寺院 prayer temple in 伊賀 Iga,
to pray for healing of an eye disease of the lord.

It was possibly a trial statue for the Hasedera in Nara.
Also called 柳谷観世音 Yanagidani Kanzeon

The temple was founded around 740.

In the compound is 聖天堂 a Hall for Shoten.

In the compound is 宝篋印塔 a Hokyoin pagoda tower.

In 1922, 石造十三重塔 a stone pagoda with 13 tires was erected.

a Shrine for 八大龍神 the Eight Great Dragon Kings were made.

In the compound was a huge 松の大木 Matsu pine tree of more than 400 years,
which fell down during the typhoon in 1961.

The main statue is 十一面観世音菩薩 Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu.

Built on request of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno (701 - 756).
Saint 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu travelled around Japan to built temples.
Nearby was a large kuzu no ki 楠樹 Camphora officinarum
which Gyoki used to make the statue of Kannon Bosatsu.
The temple was first called 大悲山自然寺 Daihizan Shizen-Ji.
Later 平将門 Taira no Masakado (903 - 940) renamed the temple.

The main statue is Yakushi Nyorai.

御宿(みやど)せし　そのときよりと　ひととはば　
網代(あじろ)の海に　夕影(ゆうかげ)の松 Yukage no Matsu

The temple was founded around 822.

北条時頼 Hojo Tokiyori stayed here over night around 1269.

Tokiyori climbed the mountain and had a wonderful view of a matsu 松 pine tree in the evening sun.
The name 御宿町 Onjuku "town where an honorable person stayed" relates to this event.
Tokiyori wrote a poem about a pine tree in the evening sun:
「御宿(みやど)せし　そのときよりと　ひととはば　網代(あじろ)の海に　夕影(ゆうかげ)の松」

In the compound is a cave, 大日洞 Dainichi Den, dating to the Kamakura period.

In the cave is a statue of Dainichi Nyorai and Naminori Kannon 波乗り観音 Kannon riding the waves.
People come to this Kannon to pray for the good health and good luck
of relatives or friends, but never for themselves.

The main statue is 愛染明王 Aizen Myo-O.

- Chant of the temple
おん　まか　らぎゃばぞろ　しゅにしゃばざら　
さとば　じゃくうん　ばんこく

The temple was founded around 1190 by 鏡覚阿闍梨 Priest Kagaku
on request of 後鳥羽天皇(在位1183～98) Emperor Gotoba Tenno,
who was ill and wanted to pray for his health.
The temple was later lost to fire.
In 1661, it was re-built by 実恵法印 Saint Jitsue (Mie).
This temple is the family temple of 松尾芭蕉家 the Matsuo Basho Family.
There is also a mound with the last hair of the haiku poet Matsuo Basho.
In the compound is a statue of 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.
There are also Halls named 地蔵堂 Jiso Hall, 行者堂 Gyoja Hall and 聖天堂 Shoten Hall.

The temple is located at the foot of 石塚山 Mount Ishizukayama.
In former times one could look down at the sea from the garden
and hear the sound of the waves on the beach.

Fudoin 不動院 Temple Fudo-In

分家して移ってきたとき、清安寺 不動院 Seian-Ji Fudo-In が「温泉を出すか水を出すか」といったので、水を選んだところ、同家には清水が出るようになったという。

７０年ほど前、狐に憑かれた女性がいた。不動院で祈祷してもらい、狐を男に移すと、座敷中をはね回り、口走る。その女性の姑が養蚕のことで願をかけ、叶えられたのに旗をあげなかったのが理由。

奉公人の男が朝草刈りに出たまま帰らない。不動院に見てもらったら狐に化かされたという。裏山に小豆飯を供えたらなくなった。男は５日目ごろ、村はずれで見つかった。

On the day of the festival of 宝泉寺 Temple Hosen-Ji,
there appears a ball of shining lisht above the temple.

. tanuki 狸 - mujina 狢 － racoon dog, badger legends .
A priest from 鎌倉建長寺 the Temple Kencho-Ji in Kamakura
came to 入浜の宝泉寺 the Temple Hosen-Ji in Irihama.
He did not like cats and dogs. When he eat, he did not go near people.
Eventually he was killed and eaten by the dog Ichimatsu near 富士川 the river Fukikawa.
Now they found out it was a Tanuki.
There is also a folding screen in the temple which the Tanuki had painted.
