五十猛命 Isonotakeru / 大屋津姫命 / 抓津姫命 Oyatsuhime no Kami

The Shrine was located at Oo no Iriumi 意宇入海(宍道湖)西岸 at the West Side of Lake Shinjiko.
In the 13th century, it was moved to its present location.

The Deities are known as
橋姫大明神 Hashihime Daimyojin 櫛八玉神(くしやたまのかみ) Kushiyatama no Kami and
白潟大明神 Shirakata Daimyojin
The deities are venerated as protectors of the tide.
Oo no Iri-Umi 意宇の入海(おうのいりうみ)

According to the volume 6 of an "alternate writing" transmitted by Nihonshoki, 'gods at the water gates are called Hayaakitsuhinomikoto.' ... Minato no kami means god of sea port.
Since port was constructed at the mouth of a river in ancient times, Minato no kami is also god for a river mouth.
From the image of running impurities in a river, Minato no kami is also regarded as a god for warding off evil fortune.
'Haya' in the names of Hayaakitsuhiko and Hayaakitsuhime implies the speed of the water in the river or the current in the ocean.
Also, the names of the god and goddess are considered to have originated from the fact that the use of the river mouth depends on the speed of the current.
On the other hand, 'akitsu' in the names of the god and goddess is thought to mean that misogi (purification ceremony) purifies things quickly and clearly. ...

Somei 染井 in Edo
the Somei area -- a general name given to a cluster of small towns and villages that specialize in growing ornamental plants and trees to plant in the gardens of all the wealthy daimyo in Edo. The two main towns in this area are Komagome and Sugamo, but most people in Edo know the area as "Somei" and the farmers who live in the region are known as the Somei uekiya (the landscape gardeners of Somei).
They get their reputation from their great skill in raising thousands of different types of ornamental plants. The farms in the Somei area produce most of the ornamental plants that the daimyo plant in their gardens, and many flower markets are held in the small towns along the Nakasendo, where common people can also buy flowers, trees and shrubs.
In fact, even the beautiful gardens inside Edo Castle are landscaped and tended by gardeners from Somei.
Somei is the home of one of the most famous gardeners in Edo: Ihei Masatake.
Masatake is the son of perhaps the greatest landscape gardener ever -- Ihei Sannojo,
and many believe that Masatake is as good at actual gardening as his famous father.

A Shinto-derived new religious movement which began in 1935 when Tanaka Tomisaburō (1868-1967) rebuilt a dilapidated shrine in Okayama.
After he had experienced a close brush with death on the frontline during the Russo-Japanese War, Tanaka felt he had received power from a talisman inscribed with four ideograms which he read sa-mu-ha-ra, and in turn he began to make miniature amulets (omamori) of this sort which he distributed for free.

Because of such proselytizing activities, however, the regional authorities accused him of using an unauthorized shrine to conduct private business, and as punishment, the shrine he had constructed was stripped of its contents and burned to the ground in 1936.
Tanaka, however, continued his activities of distributing amulets to troops being sent to the Asian front during World War II, and following the war in 1951, he registered his movement under the Religious Corporations Law (Shūkyō Hōjinhō) and rebuilt the shrine. In 1952 he moved the shrine to its present location.
After Tanaka's death his adopted son Tanaka Kōichi succeeded him.

The four letters SA MU HA RA help protect the body from harm and grand a long life.
Since they are shinji 神字 characters of God, they can not be expressed with normal 漢字 Kanji characters and can not be reproduced on a computer.
They have been used since olden times for amulets of temples,

サムハラ神社
無傷無病、延命長寿の神として知られる。𪮷〓𪮷𪮇(サムハラ)[3][4]とは不思議の4文字で、身を守ると言われている。これは漢字のような文字であるが、神字であり漢字とは異なる。Unicodeには、〓のみが収録されておらず、活字変換は不可。他の文字は全てCJK統合漢字拡張Cに収録されている。
東大寺(西東大寺)(千葉県西市)、雷山千如寺大悲王院(清賀上人により十転化の功徳があるという)など各地の寺社のお守りの呪文に使用されている。
サムハラの故事
曾子が病になって臨終の際に、弟子に体の全部を調べさせ、一つの傷痕もないのを見て安心し「父母に体を受けて生まれて幸いにも一つの傷痕もなくお返しする事ができるのは孝を尽くしたことだ」と言い、生命の守護神(𪮷〓𪮷𪮇大神)に深く感謝したという。

身體髮膚 受之父母 不敢毀傷 孝之始也[5]
身体髪膚これを父母に受く、あえて毀傷せざるは孝の始めなり

加藤清正は文禄・慶長の役の時、𪮷〓𪮷𪮇を武器の刃に彫りつけて信じていたために万死に一生を得たという。
『耳嚢[6]』巻2に、1782年(天明2年)、新見愛之助という小姓が登城の時に馬ごと坂の下に落ちたが怪我がなかった。他の者に理由を聞かれると領民から送られた守護札を見せ「領民が野においてキジを矢で射たが当たらず、逃げようともしない。弓がうまい者たちが競ったが駄目であった。このキジを捕まえたところ背中に𪮷〓𪮷𪮇の4文字が書いてあった。『この文字を書いた札を懐に入れておくと良いことがある』と流行った。」と語った[7]との記述がある。
平田篤胤の『仙境異聞』(上) 三之巻[8][9]に慶長年間に大樹公(征夷大将軍のこと)が狩で発見した鶴の羽にあった文字(𪮷〓𪮷𪮇の文字)が怪我よけとして広まり、寅吉が仙骨の人の符字のようなものに見たが、「ジヤク、コウ、ジヤウ、カウ」というように聞いたがよく知らないと言ったという。
岡田挺之の随筆『秉穂録』に「福岡で鶴を捕ったところ、鶴の翼に「さむはら」という四文字の符字があった。長命の符字であるだろうと人々はこれを写し取って帯びた。また斎藤実盛の位牌が淡路のある寺にあり、位牌の背にこの四文字がある。最近、江戸でこの符字を帯びた人が落馬したが怪我が無かったので、これを帯びることが流行した。」とある[10]。
國安仙人(万延元年(1860年)7月23日-大正元年(1912年)9月28日 幼名 米太郎 普明光美 加波山神社の摂末社普明神社に祀られる。)が信者に与えたタク字びよる霊符の最初の4文字がサムハラの文字(読みは「けん しょう けん ご」)であったという[11]。

Once a tsuru 鶴 crane was caught, with the four letters SAMUHARA on its wings.
People thought these letters would protect and bring a long life, so they copied them.

At 淡路 Awaji there was a temple with the ihai 位牌 Buddhist mortuary tablet of 斉藤実盛 Saito Sanemori.
On its back side were the letters SAMUHARA.

In 1668 a 鉄砲師 gun specialist from 紀州 Kishu named 吉川源五兵衛 Yoshikawa Gengobe came to Edo.
At 大宮鷹場 the hawking area of Omiya in the village of 吉野村 Yoshino he shot 白い雉 a white pheasant.
When he could get close, he saw on its back the letters SAMUHARA.
He thought this was an amulet to protect from injuries, so he wrote the letters on paper and shot at them.
After that he never hit a target again.

A man in Edo had carried a SAMUHARA amulet on his body. When he fell from his horse one day, we was not hurt.
Soon this kind of amulet became popular in Edo.

In 1652, the Shogun went hawk hunting. The hawk caught a large goose. The four letters of SAMUHARA were written on the breast of the bird.

Ushigafuchi, Ushigabuchi 牛ヶ淵 (うしがふち)
The canal at Kudansaka 件坂下 / 九段坂 is called 牛ヶ淵 "riverpool of the bull".
It is a 魔所 bewitched place.
Once in 1782, a Samurai rode here on his horse, but he fell down and tumbled into the "Riverpool of the Bull".
But the man and his horse did not show any wounds.
This is because once the Samurai was hunting for pheasants and shot at a kiji 雉 pheasant.
He followed the bird and finally caught it and saw the four letters SAMUHARA written on its wings.
Since then he had kept an amulet with these words in his breast pocket.

The temple was founded in 741 on request of 聖武天皇 Emperor Shomu Tenno.
The temple was built in the present location around 1890.
Many buildings were lost during WWII in 1945.
In the compound are 地蔵堂 a Jizo Do Hall and
不動堂 a Fudo Do Hall.

In the compound is abura-kake Daikoku 油かけ大黒 Daikoku to pour oil over his head.
It was most probably erected by 篤志家 the Atsushi family around 1965.

Kokubunji no kane 国分寺の鐘 the bell of 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji
Once upon a time, a thief stole the bonsho 梵鐘 temple bell of 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji.
When he came to Sugawa Ike 須川池 the Sugawa pond, he took a rest.
When he sat down, the bell begun to roll away, singing
"Kokubunji koishi ya popora poon 国分寺恋しや,ボボラボーン I long for Kokubun-Ji - popora pon."
The bell reached the lake and sunk down.
Since then, there had never been a drought.
When the water of the lake went low and ryuuto 竜頭 the dragon top of the bell came to be seen,
the dragon then took off to the sky and made rain fall.
If a person fell into Sugawa Ike 須川池 the Sugawa pond and was about to drown,
he called "I am from Kokubun-Ji, I am on my way to Kokubun-Ji!"
and thus was helped.

A blind minstrel was on his way to Kyoto.
One night he stayed ad the Kokubun-Ji in Gochi, where someone stole his wallet.
He had to turn back to his native village.
Just when he was on 関川橋 the bridge Sekigawabashi, he bumped into someone and both fell down.
When the minstrel came back to his mind a little later, he could see with both eyes
and the thief had lost his eyesight. How strange.
Both went back to the Temple Kokubun-Ji and made an offering of the lute and the stolen money.

. bakeneko 化け猫 / 化猫と伝説 Legends about monster cats .
A kaibyo 怪猫 monster cat from Tang China wanted to come to Japan,
bringing fire to 国分寺 the Temple Kokubun-Ji.
It took it one night to cross the sea, but when the cat reached
Karagane oki 唐金沖 the sea at Karagane (Togane)
she was found out by a dog. The animals begun to fight heavily
and finally both became an island.
Now the islands are called Inujima 犬島 Dog Island and Nekojima 猫島 Cat Island.

The history of Ōgamiyama Shrine dates back to the ancient cult of Ōgaminotake, a former name of Mt Daisen.
Originally called the Great Chimyo Gongen Shrine, this shrine was given its current name when Buddhism and Shinto were forced to separate during the Meiji Restoration.
The inner hillside temple was divided from the main shrine at the foot of the mountain. The main building, moved here during the Edo Period, is a popular place to pray for family safety and success in endeavors.
A complete parking area is available, with carp swimming in the nearby moat.
The shrine is accessible via a 700-metre-long path made of natural stones and is one of Japan's foremost gongen-style shrines.
Inside the building you will be surrounded by some of the country's loveliest sandalwood painted murals and sculptures.
Ōgamiyama Shrine is also the location of the first festival of spring, called the Shunki Taisai, and later
the Natsuyama Biraki festival heralding the arrival of summer.
The formerly commonplace Mohitori Shinji is also preserved as an annual event,
and the autumn Shuuki Taisai bring crowds of merrymakers every year.

Mt. Daisen was a training area for shugendo.
The monks needed a place to pray. Izumo fudoki (ancient records of the culture and geography of provinces of Japan) and Engishiki (a 927 AD Japanese book of laws and regulations) says that it was the beginning of Ogamiyama shrine, but details are unknown.
Ogamiyama shrine and Temple Daisenji had flourished, and more than 100 temples and 3,000 armed priests used to be under the control of the temple and shrine at the height of its prosperity.

"Taking the water offered to the kami rite."
A rite held July 15 at the inner sanctuary (okumiya) of Ōkamiyama Shrine in Daisen Town, Saihaku District, Tottori Prefecture.
A mohi is an earthenware container of ancient times that was used to serve water.
The purpose of this rite is to present the water that is offered to the kami (shinsui, or "kami water," but read in this case as mohi).
The ceremonies begin at 2 a.m. at the inner sanctuary. The mohi bearer climbs up to the pond at the top of Mt. Daisen carrying a water barrel filled with sake to be offered to the kami (miki).
The bearer pours the miki into the pond at sunrise, draws water to replace it and also picks some mugwort before descending to the inner sanctuary.
These are offered to the kami and the bearer gives a report on the mission in the form of an incantation (norito) to the chief priest (gūji).
When this is over, the now-sacralized water (mohi) and the mugwort are distributed to the worshippers.
They are believed to be efficacious for all kinds of illness and a great tumult results as the worshippers try to get their hands on the offerings.
In ancient times, this day used to mark the opening of Mt. Daisen. Many people are said to have joined the bearer in climbing the mountain.
The enshrined deity (saijin), Ōnamuchi-no-mikoto, is said to have offered prayers in this area for the country's good management, and this rite likewise is said to have gotten its start from as long ago as that time.

In the early morning of the first day of the New Year, there is a ritual called
senjiki センジキ, 握り飯 roasted rice cakes.
On a rock formation people bring offerings of karasu mochi カラス餅 rice cakes for crows.
Very soon a couple of crows come down from the mountain and take the rice cakes away.
The crows are messengers of Kumano Gongen.
If they are coming, there will be a good harvest and good fishing.
If they do not come, there will be a poor fishing catch.

A similar story is told at 八幡神社 the Shrine Hachiman Jinja in 滋賀県 Shiga, 多賀町 Taga town.

熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity is venerated 光興寺 at the Temple Koko-Ji.
Once an itinerant priest from Kyoto stayed over night in the hall.
When the priest lit a fire, the flames came over tho the hall.
The statue of the deity flew out of the hall and into a field far away.
It was stopped in a huge itayakaede イタヤカエデ Acer pictum tree.
The statue of Kumano Gongen is now at 柳玄寺 the Temple Ryugen-Ji.
The temple provides an amulet with yatagarasu 八咫烏 the three-legged crow.

Once a girl washed her face in the clear water of the forest and soon became very weak.
Her parents got worried and prayed to 熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity for help.
Then therer was a thunder and trembling of the earth, with strange light in the sky.
Eventually it became calm and clear again.
There were two huge dead serpents on the gruond, hugging each other.
The male serpent had fallen in love with the daughter,
but the female serpent became very jealous.
The serpents had a fight and finally fell down dead.

The famous 当麻寺の曼荼羅 Taima Mandala from Temple Taimadera had become quite old and needed repair.
A high priest came to do the work, but the colors he used did not fit.
At that time, his apprentice met an old man from 二上岳 Mount Futakamigake.
The old man told him to dig in the back of 熊野新宮社 Kumano Shingusha.
When he did so, he found a bundle with just the right colors.
The old man must have been 熊野権現 the Kumano Gongen Deity himself.

When making mochi 餅 rice cakes at the temple for Kokuzo Bosatsu,
people used two small red plates and placed 12 Mochi on them.
The plates were placed outside on straw and people begun to chant.
In no time the karasu 烏 crows came to eat them.
Crows were seen as gongen no tsukai 権現の使い the messenger of Gongen.

In 安谷屋村 the village Adania there lived a couple who could not pay their taxes.
So the wife had to go out for work.
The couple shared a contract to stay togeher for eternity
and then the wife left the village.
The woman cut hair long hair and sold it.
Then she bought some fragrant flowers and visite a temple.
On her way she met an old man and asked him to look after her luggage.
On the way back she could not find the old man any more.
She asked the Deity to show her the way.
In a dream she learned that the old man was
Kumano Gongen 熊野権現 The Kumano Deity.
When she opened the luggage found at the temple,
she saw that many cold coins had been put inside.

There is 熊野神社 a Kumano Shrine at 野上町 Nogami town.
Every year on the last day at ushi no koku 丑の刻 the hour of the ox, around 3 at night,
from 龍ノ口山 Mount Tatsunokuchi, there comes shinka 神火 a light looking like being shot from an arrow.
When the farmers see it, they feel blessed at the end of the year.

Although almost unknown in his native country, Bigot is famous in Japan for his satirical cartoons, which depict life in Meiji period Japan.
Bigot was born in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, France and was encouraged into the arts by his mother. At the age of twelve, he was accepted by the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was trained by artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran. While in school, Bigot was introduced to Japonism and befriended a number of collectors of Japanese art.
He was also impressed with the Japanese pavilion at the Exposition Universelle (1878), all of which aroused in him a strong interest to move to Japan.
In order to pay for the trip, he became an illustrator for newspapers, La Vie Moderne and The World Parisien and sold illustrations for Émile Zola's novel Nana. Bigot arrived in Yokohama in 1882. On arrival, he took lessons in the Japanese language and Japanese painting, and taught watercolor painting to students at the Imperial Japanese Army Academy as an oyatoi gaikokujin. He also sold illustrations to Japanese newspapers, and issued an illustrated book Japanese Sketches.
On the expiry of his government teaching job, he found employment as a French language teacher at a school run by the writer and liberal political philosopher Nakae Chōmin.
He also traveled extensively around Japan.
In 1887, Bigot published a satirical magazine, Tōbaé, in which he illustrated mostly scenes of everyday Japanese life, but also ridiculed Japanese politicians and what he felt to be excesses of in the Westernization of Japan.
The newspaper had to be published in Yokohama for fear of Japanese censors.
During the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), Bigot traveled to Korea on special assignment from the English magazine London Graphic.
In 1895, Bigot married Masu Sano and fathered a son named Maurice.
However, with the revision of the unequal treaties and the end of extraterritoriality in Japan in 1899, Bigot decided to return to France.
He divorced his wife, but kept custody of their son. After his return to France, he worked for Le Chat Noir and other French magazines and newspapers. He also provided cartoons depicting the Second Boer War and the Russo-Japanese War.
On retirement, he moved to Bièvres, Essonne, where he died in 1927.

Incorporating over 250 illustrations, this is the first comprehensive study in English of French artist and caricaturist George Ferdinand Bigot (1860-1927) who, during the last two decades of the nineteenth century, was renowned in Japan but barely known in his own country.
Even today, examples of his cartoons appear in Japanese school textbooks.
Inspired by what he saw of Japanese culture and way of life at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878, Bigot managed to find his way to Japan in 1882 and immediately set about developing his career as an artist working in pen and ink, watercolours and oils.
He also quickly exploited his talent as a highly skilled sketch artist and cartoonist.
His output was prodigious and included regular commissions from The Graphic and various Japanese as well as French journals.
He left Japan in 1899, never to return. The volume includes a full introduction of the life, work and artistry of Bigot by Christian Polak, together with an essay by Hugh Cortazzi on Charles Wirgman, publisher of Japan Punch. Wirgman was Bigot's 'predecessor' and friend (he launched his own satirical magazine Tôbaé in 1887, the year Japan Punch closed).
Georges Bigot and Japan also makes a valuable contribution to Meiji Studies and the history of both Franco- and Anglo-Japanese relations, as well as the role of art in modern international relations.

Charles Wirgman (1832 - 1891)
was an English artist and cartoonist, the creator of the Japan Punch and illustrator in China and Meiji period-Japan for the Illustrated London News.
Wirgman was the eldest son of Ferdinand Charles Wirgman (1806–57) and brother of Theodore Blake Wirgman. He married Ozawa Kane in 1863, and the couple had one son.
Wirgman arrived in Japan in 1861 as a correspondent for the Illustrated London News, and resided in Yokohama from 1861 until his death.
He published the first magazine in Japan, the Japan Punch, monthly between 1862 and spring 1887.
Like its British namesake, the magazine was written in a humorous, often satirical manner, and was illustrated with Wirgman's cartoons.
Wirgman formed a partnership called "Beato & Wirgman, Artists and Photographers" with Felice Beato from 1864 to 1867.
Wirgman again produced illustrations derived from Beato's photographs while Beato photographed some of Wirgman's sketches and other works.
Wirgman taught western-style drawing and painting techniques to a number of Japanese artists, possibly including the ukiyo-e artist Kobayashi Kiyochika.
From 1865 he had Goseda Yoshimatsu and Kanō Tomonobu as his pupils.
In 1866 he taught Takahashi Yuichi, sponsoring his work for the International Exposition of 1867.
He also was briefly an English tutor, most notably to the future Admiral Tōgō, then a young cadet.
In the 1860s, he accompanied British envoy Sir Ernest Satow on a number of journeys around Japan as described in Satow's Diplomat in Japan.
Wirgman's grave is in the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery.
