He is mentioned in a script named Tengukyoo 天狗経 Tengu Sutra
of the 祈祷秘教.
His whereabouts are not clear, but most probably he is from
大阪府 田原村 Osaka, Tawaramura village
at 田原村の岩船神祠 the Iwabune Shrine.

According to Nihon Shoki 日本書紀 Chronicles of Japan, it is a boat made of stone that came flown down from the sky. It carried the deity 櫛玉饒速日命 Kushitama Nigihayahi no Mikoto (櫛玉饒速日 Kushitama Nigihayahi).
Or
the deity 天火明命 Ama no Honoakari no Mikoto (鐃速日命).
He is the child of 天忍穂耳尊 Ama no Oshihomimi no Mikoto. Ancestor deity 尾張連 Owari no Muraji.

Or
it is a stone boat that floats on the Amanogawa 天の川 "River of Heaven", the Milky Way

Honoakari
According to Nihongi, one of three kami born to Konohana no Sakuyahime after spending a single night cohabiting with Ninigi.
Honoakari is claimed as the first ancestor of the clan called Owari no Muraji, but differing birth orders are described in the various traditions transmitted by Nihongi. According to Kojiki and two of the "alternate writing" traditions related by Nihongi, Honoakari was the first offspring born to Amenooshihomimi and Yorozuhatahime (daughter of Takamimusuhi), while the second son was Ninigi.
Kojiki and an "alternate writing" transmitted by Nihongi state that the kami's name was Amenohoakari no mikoto, and Nihongi tradition goes on to claim that the offspring of this kami, Amanokaguyama, was remote ancestor of the Owari no Muraji.

Another "alternate writing" in Nihongi likewise gives the name Amaterukuniteruhiko Hoakari as remote ancestor of the Owari no Muraji.
The Shinsen shōjiroku provides the names of two kami, Honoakari no mikoto and Amenohoakari no mikoto, and since the two are associated with differing lineages, it would appear that the tradition includes two separate kami with similar names.

Iwafune Jinja 磐船神社
大阪府交野市私市9丁目19-1 / Osaka, Katano, 19-1 Kisaichi 9 Chome

The main object of veneration is a huge stone boulder
Ame no Iwafune 天の磐船 （あめのいわふね）
The boulder is about 12 meters long and 12 meters high.
There is no "main shrine", since Stone is the deity. In front of the stone is a small sanctuary for prayers.



The Deity related to this place is Nigihayashi no Mikoto, grandchild of Amaterasu. The deity used a boat to come down to earth, and the boat then turned into this boulder. Amaterasu had ordered him to rule Japan, then called Nakatsu no Kuni in Toyoashihara (now Nara).

A Sutra recited by the Shugendo priests. It is known since the Muromachi period.
It contains the names of 48 Tengu.
Altogether there are 十二万五千五百 125500 Tengu in Japan.

この経文には、全部で48の天狗が登場する。
天狗経は室町後期にはすでに存在していたらしい

At the mountain village 瀬村 Semura there is a festival where the local people make a large mask of a Tengu and send it off to the next village in the deep mountains with music of drums and bells. The Tengu is seen as a protector of the humans and their animals. This custom lasted until the early Meiji period.

At the meat shop 天狗中田本店 Tengu Nakada Honten 　
a Tengu is the protector deity of the shop.



Tengu was a "friend" of the founder on his visits to the local Izakaya bar and also familiar to the shop founder from Kurama in Kyoto. The founder 中田岩次 Nakada Iwatsugi carved a mask, put on some flashing robes and rode through the town on a horse to draw attention to his shop. At that time, eating meat was not yet very popular in Japan.
The shop was first named 天狗乃肉 Tengu no Niku, The Meat of Tengu.

On the 3rd of Nbvember, the founding day of the shop, the mask of Tengu is venerated. During the New Year celebrations, a scroll of Tengu is hung up.

At the annual festival, children are choosen to be the アマメハギ Amamehagi. They wear masks of a Tengu or for a 獅子頭 lion dance and walk around the village from home to home, where they receive sweets.
At night they have to stay awake in the local shrine.

is a little male Yokai monster. He has mushrooms on his head which he uses to attack things.

The normal feather fan of a Tengu has 7 or 8 (yatsude) feathers. Some have nine feathers.

天狗のウチワの凧 - in the form of shuro 棕櫚の葉 a leaf of the Shuro hemp-palm

This is also the 御神紋 shrine crest of 冨士神社 Fuji Jinja in 上西町 Kaminishi town (Shizuoka).
The kamon 家紋 family crest of the 富士氏 Fuji clan, priests at Fuji Jinja, is the 棕櫚団扇 Shuro Fan.
It should be different from the fan of a Tengu, but the priests have a strong belief in the Tengu.

Once a Tengu met a run-down gambler with a special dice, said to bring 千里眼 clairvoiance. So he exchanged his feather fan for it. When he found out he had been cheated, the Tengu went looking for the home of the gambler. The home was surrounded by plants that a Tengu dislikes, (thorny brambles and azaleas).
In his anger the Tengu threw 牡丹餅 sweet rice cakes at the home, not knowing that this was a well-loved food by the gambler.

Once upon a time there lived なまけ者の時 a lazy person called Toki. He was told to go to the mountain forest to work, but he soon sat down under a pine tree and had a nap. But on this tree happened to sit a Tengu, who wanted to play a trick on Toki. He fanned the nose with his feather fan, so that it grew quite long. When Toki woke up and found his nose had grown he was quite surprized. The Tengu said to him:
"With my fan you can make your nose very long or very short. I will lent it to you and we can make some good money with this! If you fan with the front side a nose will grow longer. If you fan with the back side, a nose will shrink."
Toki was lucky and made a good bit of money with this fan.
Once he had to shit whilst in the wilderness and had nothing to wipe his behind, so he thought he could use
just a bit of the back of his magic fan.
Then he went back to his business, making his nose long. But when he tried to make it short again, it did not shrink any more and he became the laughing stock of the region.
He had to become a beggar, walking around shaking his long nose, begging for food.

At 魔尼山 Manizan there lived a Tengu.
The only son of the 西野家 Nishino family in 大工 Daikumachi village was once abducted by a person looking like a mountain priest. Seven years later his mother had a dream. Her son appeared and told her he was taken care of by a Tengu who taught him many things. He would soon graduate and asked her to place some vegetables and a large portion of rice (tengu no goohan 強飯) on the roof.
When she did as asked, the next night there were voices outside on the roof, then it became quiet again.
Another ten and more years later, the feather fan of a Tengu was delivered to the Nishio family and she was sure it was a keepsake of her son.
The house of the Nishio family never bured down, not even during the great fire in the village.

(1712 – 1788)

an 18th-century scholar and ukiyo-e artist of Japanese folklore. He was the teacher of Utamaro and before taking up printmaking, a painter of the Kanō school.
Toriyama is most famous for his attempt to catalogue all species of yōkai in the Hyakki Yagyō series.

In Japanese mythology, the Karasu tengu, or minor tengu,
is a supernatural being with the head and wings of a black crow. They serve Daitengu, which are fallen yamabushi (monks), tall men with big noses and red faces who can create tornadoes using fans of bird feathers they carry in their sandals.
Karasu Tengu ("Crow" Tengu) 烏天狗
The ancient form of the Tengu was the "karasu" or "crow" Tengu. Portrayed as an evil crow-like creature with the body of a man, it was capable of kidnapping adults and children, starting fires, and ripping apart those who willfully damaged the forest, for the Tengu live in trees.
Sometimes, too, the Tengu would abduct human beings, only to release them later, but the "lucky" survivor would return home in a state of dementia (called "Tengu Kakushi, meaning "hidden by a Tengu").
A Karasu Tengu is rather small, with the head and wings of a black crow. Some say that Tengu don't want human society to become stable and powerful, so they intervene to provoke war and civil disorder.

Crow Tengu Riding Boar (Karasu Tengu 烏天狗騎猪)

In paintings and woodblock prints, the boar often appears as the steed of the tengu or of their king, Sōjōbō 僧正坊. Sōjōbō is closely linked to famed warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189), one of Japan's most revered samurai. In a well-known legend, Yoshitsune lived among the tengu in his youth and received training in the arts of war from Sōjōbō himself.
Note:
The Buddhist martial deity Marishiten is also often shown riding atop a boar.

Another possible interpretation of the above image relates to the following Zen story:

"One day a hunter was in the mountains when he happened to see a snake killing a bird. Suddenly a boar appeared and began to devour the snake. The hunter thought he should kill the boar, but changed his mind because he did not want to be a link in such a chain, and cause his own death by the next predator to come along. On his way home he heard a voice call to him from the top of a tree. It was the voice of a tengu. It told him how lucky he was, for had he killed the boar, the tengu would have killed him.
The man subsequently moved into a cave and never killed another animal."

At the time of Tokugawa Ieyasu
there lived a strong priest in a temple. Once there came a Karasu Tengu to him and asked for his help in a fight with his worst enemy. He wanted to use the right arm of the priest, but he could not possibly cut it off . . . So the priest agreed to borrow just the "strenght of his arm". After seven days, the Tengu gave the power back to his arm.
As a sign of his gratitude, he left his nails with the priest 天狗の爪.

30年程前、為義は狩人をして渡世していた。その見た夢の話である。肺病の薬にする啄木鳥を捕ってくれと頼まれたが、そのとき大鷹に襲われた。羽毛は真っ白で、その羽毛の一つ一つに黄金の鈴がついていた。この鷹と思っていたのは鼻の尖った天狗のようなもので、この烏天狗に、ある草を3種類そろえてそれを黒焼にすればよいといわれたが、その3種類のうち蛇苺以外は思い出せなかったという。

村の者が男の子を連れて石槌山に登ったが子供の姿が消えた。家に帰ると子供は先に帰っていた。山頂で小便をしていると真っ黒い顔の大男が送ってやると声をかけ、目をつぶると家の裏庭に1人で立っていたという。烏天狗の仕業とされる。

石槌山は天狗の巣である。麓の村では裏庭にある高い松に夜になると烏天狗がとまっているという。大きなムクの木にも闇の晩に天狗が来て休んだといい、小さな火の光が枝の間で光っていると言われた。

One night sometime in the Enryaku Period (about 1,200 years ago) the priest Kobo Daishi had secluded himself in this mountain area and was carving a stone (ishi) statue of the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy). However he was forced to abandon his effort upon hearing a rooster crow to announce the daybreak. He left the mountain and the statue's right hand remained unfinished.
This site is now designated as a special holy site along the Hokuriku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and, on account of the statue's missing limb, is said to have healing powers for limb disabilities. The path to the mountainside away from the Main Hall leads to a spring called 'Kannon Reisui' and, in March 2006, the spring's water 'Fukui no Oishii Mizu' (Fukui's Delicious Water) was recognised as among the very best from Fukui.
