- - - Once upon a time in Tohoku
there was a long, wet, cold summer and no good rice harvest and all the rice farmers were hungry.
The Inari Fox, the Rice Harvest Deity, came down to Jizo and the two discussed how they could help the poor farmers.
Jizo decided to sit by the roadside with a rice ball in hand and Fox sit at his side.
Every time a farmer passed and folded his hands in prayer, he could take the steaming-hot rice ball, still warm and tasty, eat it and go on.
Then Inari Fox would place another one on Jizo's hands and when the next farmer came, again, a steaming-hot rice ball was ready for him.
Thus
the two heavenly friends helped the village pass time the time until the next bountiful rice harvest was ready.

Yanegami 屋根神 Deity on the Roof
Yanegamisama 屋根神様

A small shrine on the roof, mostly of a merchant, to protect the estate and the shop.
Mostly seen in Aichi and Gifu.

A small shrine sits on the lowest roof under the eaves. It is usually holding an amulet from 秋葉神社 Akiba Jinja to protect against fire and misfortune. Other amulets may be from Ise Jingu or 津島神社 Tsushima Shrine. In Nagoya it is often from 熱田神宮 Atsuta Jingu.
Other local names are 秋葉さん Akiba San or お天王さん O-Tenno-San.
軒神さま Nokigami sama, 氏神さん Ujigamisan
町の神さま Machi no Kamisama, 町内神社 Chonai Jinja (Shrine of the village)

Since it is difficult to climb up to the eaves for prayer and rituals, many of these shrines have been re-located inside the home, near the entrance.

The regular rituals are held by the village community, small interest groups or just one family.
In Nagoya there are groups with more than 100 families.
Regular rituals are held at the New Year and each month on the 1st and 15th day, usually from early morning to late afternoon, when the offerings are taken down to be eaten at home.
People climb on the ladder and offer vegetables and fruit on a special tray. Some hang a violet curtain around the Shrine. Others hang a lantern on these days.
Very seldom an official Shinto priest is called to perform the rituals. Sometimes even a Buddhist priest or Yamabushi mountain priest can be called.

There are not many old records about the Yanegami. Maybe people hoped that the higher up the shrine was, the better their prayers would reach the Deity.

Nationally famous, it heads the Tsushima shrine network, dedicated to the so-called Tsushima Cult (津島信仰 Tsushima Shinkō). This Tōkai-centered network with its about-3,000-member shrines is the tenth-largest in the country.
The main kami of this faith are Gozutennō (牛頭天王 lit. ox-headed heaven king), the god of pestilences, and Susanoo, two deities which have been conflated together.

Shrine legend says that Gozutennō's aramitama (its violent side) stays at Izumo-taisha, whereas its nigemitama (calm aspect) came to Japan from the Korean peninsula after stopping in Tsushima Island, between Korea and Japan. This may explain the relationship between the two Tsushimas suggested by the common name.
The shrine holds a festival called Tsushima Matsuri (津島祭り) in the sixth month of the lunar calendar (July in the Gregorian calendar) during which boats called danjiri (車楽) are floated on the Tennō River, and reeds are released into the water.
The shrine is built in the local owari-zukuri style, of which few extant examples remain.

The sound of cutting down a tree with a saw or ax is heard at night, but next morning nothing is to be seen.
This refers to strange noises in a lonely forest.

This phenomenon is also known in other parts of Japan.

On the 8th and 9th day in the second and 12th month of the old lunar calendar people were not allowed to work in the mountains. That would certainly bring them bad luck.
Someone who tried to go to the mountain on the 9th day of the second lunar month got hit by a boulder, fell down a crevice and died.

In the very remote mountains of Fukushima, where people rarely come,
Tengu throw down trees.
Another Yokai monster creature living there is
オンボノヤス Onbonyasu / オボノヤス Obonyasu.
He can blow fog and make the region unsafe. People easily loose their way in his fog.

Every year on the first of January, February 2 and October 17, the Deity of the Mountain comes down to visit. He is most probably a male Tengu. On these days people involved in forest work come together in the main family home, eat rice cakes and drink Sake. On these days it is not allowed to go to the forest to work.

以前は、七つ森の峠越しでは天狗様のお怒りにあって神隠しに遭うというので、生臭や女気を断って一週間の行をした。明治の頃、ある人が信じずに山仕事に米を背負って出かけて、行方不明になった。山探しをすると20尺（6m）もある木の上に、米を背負ったまま引っかかって死んでいた。

Once a man with a twisted neck was healed by this Tengu. Since the man was a painter, he painted the Tengu to show his gratitude.

It happens during daytime in the mountain forest. First there is the sound of pyuuun, then the sound of wings flapping.
This is also heard by farmers who try fishing in mountain rivers in the evening.

親類が神隠しにあった。夜には村の山にいたが、夜明けごろになると子馬のようなものが現れて一緒にこいというので、これについていくと、隣村の山に入った。天狗様が現れて、ここにいては悪いから村へ帰れと掴まれて投げられた。

In Inamura village 伊南村の宮澤の人が黒谷入という所で魚を釣っていると影がさした。じっとみると水鏡に赤い顔で鼻の高い人が覗いていた。天狗様だろうということであった。

This mountain is the dwelling place of Tengu since olden times. It has a large plain on its top, where many mountain flowers blossom.
The locals call it the Flower Garden of the Tengu.

The Honest, Pious Hachirozaemon
Hachirozaemon had a large swelling on the cheek To get healed he had to dance with a Tengu, who then took away the lumpy swelling.
Another man who could not see with one eye tried the same. But he was a bad, wicked person and thus he did not get healed but instead even got the lump of Hachirozaemon on his cheek too.

At night there is a sound of stones hitting the wooden rain shutters. They say a Tengu is trying to take an aim.

Once a woman at the other side of the river had a competition with him, throwing stones. The stones war called Tengu Ishi 天狗石 Tengu stones. They have fallen down along the mountain forest of O-Degu Sama.

昔、山小屋で寝ていると突風が吹いて木が倒れる音がした。翌朝見に行っても何も倒れていない。また石が飛んで来て岩などに当たるような音がする。また夜寝ていると小屋ごと持ち上げられることがある。天狗の悪口を言わないでいると元に戻る。

At 奈良田に天狗森 Tengu no Mori in Narada Hot Spring

奈良田に天狗森というところがある。明治23年に天狗森の木を売却することになり、中巨摩郡の小笠原の大衛門という人が買主となってこの木を伐採した所、その夜に火災が起こり、外良寺をはじめ13戸が焼失した。村人は天狗の祟りと恐れ、すぐ桧苗3本を植え、祠を建てて天狗を祀った。買主の大衛門は事業で失敗し自殺したという。また2本の下駄の歯に似たような跡がある岩があり、天狗の足跡といっていたが今はない。

TEMPLES - Gofunai temples 34 and 35

The temple looks like a modern two-story building.

This temple was founded in 1472 by Saint 品隆上人.
The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai, made by 慈覺大師 / 慈覚大師 Jigaku Daishi. The priest 恵心僧都原信 Eshin Sozu Genshin (942 - 1017) kept it to pray for the healing of his mother.

Above the entrance is a large name plate with the letters 薬王山 Yakuozan.

The place of its foundation was at the slope 三念坂 / 三年坂 Sannenzaka, refering to a slope with three temples.
It was moved to its present location in 1603.
Nearby was the estate of the Daimyo 小笠原壱岐守 Ogawawara Iki no Kami Nagamichi (1862 – 1868).
In the compound were many graves of famous people, but after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 they were moved to 多摩墓地 Tama Graveyard.

Genshin 源信 (942 – July 6, 1017), also known as Eshin Sozu,
was the most influential of a number of Tendai scholars active during the tenth and eleventh centuries in Japan. He was not a wandering evangelist as Kūya was, but was an elite cleric who espoused a doctrine of devotion to Amida Buddha which taught that because Japan was thought to have entered mappō, the "degenerate age" of the "latter law," the only hope for salvation lay in the reliance on the power of Amitabha. Other doctrines, he claimed, could not aid an individual because they depended on "self-power" (jiriki), which cannot prevail during the chaos of the degenerate age, when the power of another (tariki) is necessary.
In his approach to rebirth in the Pure Land, Genshin emphasized visual meditation practices, where later Pure Land sects favored verbal recitations such as the nembutsu. Genshin's doctrine is documented in his magnum opus, the Ōjōyōshū (往生要集 "Essentials of Birth in the Pure Land"), which in later copies of the text came complete with graphic depictions of the joy of the blessed and the suffering of those doomed to chaos.

Genshin's influence in contemporary Japanese culture today is primarily due to his treatise, Ōjōyōshū, particularly the graphic descriptions of the Buddhist hell realms (地獄 jigoku), which inspired a genre of horror and morality stories. The 1960 Japanese film Jigoku was influenced by Genshin's Ōjōyōshū among other works.
In Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, he is considered the Sixth Patriarch.
Genshin
is credited as the founder of the Enshin school of Tendai Buddhism, and for espousing the "original enlightenment" teaching, or hongaku (本覚), where one is originally enlightened, but unaware of it. In all, Genshin left more than 30 works which continue to influence Pure Land thought today.
The image of Amida Nyorai
in the main building of Yasaka-ji Temple in Shikoku is said to have been made by Genshin in the Heian Period.

Nr. 35 - Konshooin 根生院 Konsho-In

This temple was founded in 1636 by 春日局の猶子榮春法印 the adopted child of Kasuga no Tsubone, Priest Eishun (Shigeharu) and was under the protection as a special temple of the Tokugawa Shogunate 幕府の祈願所.
The main statue is 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai made by 仏師春日 the Buddhist sculptor Kasuga.

The temple was first built in 神田白壁町 Kanda, Shirakabecho.
In 1654 it was moved to 下谷長者町 Shitaya Chojamachi.
In 1688 it was relocated to 本郷切通坂 Hongo Kiritoshizaka.
In 1690 it was allocated more land by 将軍綱吉 Shogun Tsunayoshi.
In 1889 it was relocated to 上野池端七軒町 Ueno Ikenohata Shichikenmachi
In 1902/03 it was relocated to 徳川田安候旧邸 the estate of the Tokugawa Tayasu clan.
In 1945 during the war it burned down and all buildings except the main gate were lost.

The present-day main building is from 2002, with a large glass front.
