Chiba no kotengu 千葉の小天狗 The Small Tengu from Chiba

Chiba Eijiroo 千葉 栄次郎 Chiba Eijiro (1833 - 1862)
A Samurai of the Bakumatsu period. Master of the 北辰一刀流 Hokushin Ittoryu School of Swordsmanship.
He studied with his father, 千葉周作 Chiba Shusaku, and became so proficient, he was called "Small Tengu" at age 19.

嶺岡浅間の天狗面 Mineoka Asama Tengu Masks
The Mineoka Mountain District ( 嶺岡山地 Mineoka sanchi).
Mount Mineoka Asama is 336 m high. On its North-Eastern side is a temple housing 白滝不動 Shirataki Fudo and the stone Tengu masks are close to it.

The stone Tengu on the way have some strange forms, with a protruding mouth and a nose like a dumpling.
The locals call them 石尊山 Sekison San - Venerable Stone Deities .



There are three sanctuaries for the stone Tengu on the way up to Mount Mineoka Asama.

The belief in Sekison San is known in the Tanzawa mountains, Oyama and at 富士山新五合目小御岳石尊 the 5th station of Mount Fujisan,
石尊様 Sekison Sama are also venerated in Gunma, 甘楽郡 Kanragun 南牧村 Nanmoku village.

高宕山 Takagoyama - 315 m high
From its peak there is a great view over the Kujukutani mountains, Tokyo Bay and all the way to Mount Fujisan.
Now the center of 県立高宕山自然公園, Takagoyama Prefectural Natural Park in South-central Chiba.

Kujukutani is the landscape of the row of mountains seen from the Kujukutani Park down from Shiratori Shrine at the southeastern end of Mt. Kano in Kimitsu City, Chiba Pref. The mountains including Mt. Takago are part of Boso Kyuryo (hills).
This picturesque landscape is composed of deep valleys and overlapping mountain ridgelines, which is selected as one of 500 Charming Spots in Boso. Purple mists at dawn or the after grow of a sunset creates a magnificent scene like an ink painting. Especially beautiful is the sea of clouds trailing along the ridgelines and fading out into the air, which can be seen from the late fall to winter.
A poet, Keigetsu Omachi, described it as "the most wonderful sight in the world." It is said that an artist painter, Kaii Higashiyama, was inspired with this landscape and painted one of his masterpieces, "Afterglow."

Mount Takagoyama is 雨乞いの山 a mountain for rain rituals. At 清滝神社 Kiyotaki Jinja a small shrine the Waterfall Deity is venerated as 高オカミ神 the Mountain Deity.
(The old Kanji for this spelling is rain 雨 on top and below it three open mouths 口. Below it the Kanji for a dragon 龍 - a very complicated Kanji indeed, 高おかみ神.)
Below this shrine is the Kannon hall in a cave, protecting the Tengu masks.
Once upon a long time, Minamoto no Yoritomo had to flee from 小田原の石橋山 the lost battle in Odawara and took refuge here. Yoritomo stayed in the Kannon cave (高宕観音 Takago Kannon) and prayed for the return of his good luck and victory. On the pillars of this cave-hall hang the Tengu masks.

高宕山 The Kanji in the middle, 宕, refers to the cave, and this reminded people of the famous 愛宕山 Atagoyama in Kyoto.
Maybe the Tengu from Atagoyama even came here to visit ? ??

観音堂の天狗面 The Tengu Masks of the Kannon-Hall

Iizuna temple is known as the 天狗の寺"Tengu Temple".
People come here to pray fpr fire prevention, safety on the sea, prosperous business and health.
The temple treasure is a wood carving of about 4 m length and 1 m hight by the famous carver 波の伊八 Nami no Ihachi.
It shows 牛若丸と天狗 Ushiwakamaru and the Tengu.
At the 仁王門 Nio-Mon entrance gate is a carving of a Tengu riding the waves.

He had become a guhin 狗賓 Tengu and is still living to our day.

Someone cut the weeds below the 天狗の腰かけ松 Pine of the Tengu. The Tengu got angry, abducted him and when the man came back, he had a bad injury.

Aoso sama 青麻様 "Green Hemp Deity"
The protecting deity of the 鹿間家 Shikama family is Aoso Sama, said to be a Tengu. He protects from 中風 palsy. Its annual rituals are on the first of April and September.
The offering is red rice and never pumpkin or leek, since he does not like these vegetables.

A child once saw a Tengu on the bridge of 東茂原 Higashi Mobara. Soon after the child got ill and died.

A Tengu once shape-shifted and worked at a temple in I市原 chihara town. When the priest asked him to get some Tofu he flew all the way to Kyoto to buy it.

Many Tengu sometimes came to the 権現森 Gongenmori Park and made music with flutes and drums.
(Gongen Mori is a hill in Chiba and is nearby are Nagarayama and Rokujizō. 権現森自然公園.)

At 滝田 Takita there is 天狗の通り道 a Tengu road, where they pass with the most strange sounds when flying past. It is a rather deep forest and sometimes the forest workers, who stay over night in a small hut, can feel it moving and shaking.

A villager from 八束村 Yatsukamura village has seen a Tengu in the mountain forest, reading a book.

On mount 伊予ケ岳 Iyogatake in the village 平群村 Hegurimura near 岩井 Iwai there lived a Tengu.
The warden of the small shrine could tell his temper: On good days the water bucket was filled by the Tengu, on bad days it was empty.

Mount Iyogatake (伊予ヶ岳 Iyoga-take) is a mountain on the border of the city of Minamibōsō, Chiba Prefecture, with an altitude of 336.6 m (1,104 ft).
Mount Iyogatake is at the west of the Mineoka Mountain District of the Bōsō Hill Range, in close proximity to Mount Tomi. The mountain takes its name from its resemblance to Mount Ishizuchi in Ehime Prefecture, formerly in Iyo Province.
Mount Iyogatake is one of the few mountains in the Bōsō Hill Range with steep rock cliff. It can be easily climbed within 40 minutes. The entrance to the path of the mountain is between Heguri Elementary School and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine. Mount Iyogatake offers a clear view of the other mountains of the Bōsō Hill Range and Tokyo Bay, and on clear days Mount Fuji and the Izu Islands are also visible.
Mount Iyogatake and the Heguri Tenjin Shrine are associated with a legend of a tengu, a supernatural creature found in Japanese folklore.

Sometimes the Tengu came down to the village to pester the farmers, steal the rice from their barn or the vegetables from their fields. But the villagers feared the curse of this Tengu and could do nothing. The Tengu took advantage of their fear and one day threw a letter into a farmhouse:
"Tonight at the full moon, bring the most beautiful girl of Heguri village to the Shrine 天神社 Tenjin Sha at the foot of Mount Iyogatake. If you do not obey, I will use my 天狗の団扇 Tengu fan and blast away your whole village in a storm!"
The farmer was struck with fear and went to the village headman for advice. He headman was very clever and said:
"If the Tengu will use his fan, we can use our own fan to teach him a lesson!"
He made a fan three times bigger as the one used by the tengu, climbed Mount Iyogatake and showed it to the Tengu. The Tengu wanted to have it and exchanged it for his own.
When he next tried to use the new fan to fly down to the village, he fell from the mountain - he had lost his 神通力 magical power.

Another legends tells of this vicious Tengu feared by all villagers, who was just friends with one man,
定さん Sada san. Sada san was the second son of a rich farmer. Sada san had once picked up the fan of the Tengu on the foot of the mountain and brought it back. The Tengu was very greatful and invited him for a delicious meal.
As you know, a Tengu needs his fan to be able to fly around in the sky.
The man, who knew the others did not like the Tengu, was glad he had given the fan back and received a meal instead, so the two became friends. The man went up to the Tengu's living quarters many times to eat and tell all in the village about his new friend.
Thus he helped to make the Tengu quite famous . . . to our day, it seems.
Once the Tengu boasted:
"I can fly to all the way Shikoku to 像頭山 Mount Zuzu-San and the temple at 金琴平山 Konpira-San and come back in no time at all!"
Sada doubted this, but the Tengu wielded his fan and slowly disappeared in the sky. Since he did not come back, Sada san went home to sleep. When he opened the shutters next morning he saw an amulet from the famous temple at Konpira San on his doorstep. This must have been placed there by his friend, the Tengu.

Once upon a time, the Tengu from Iyogatake abducted an acolyte, the son of 小松民部正寿 Komatsu Minbu Masatoshi, from the temple 小松寺 Komatsu-Ji in 千倉 Chikura and much later they found the boy at Iyogatake.
Much later.
Once in summer during the rainy season, villagers were cleaning up the mountain. When they emptied a trash box on the wayside, a large mukade ムカデ centipede came out of it.

At the top of the mountain is a Shinto sanctuary dedicated to
少比名命 Sukunahiko no Mikoto.

Stories about a Tengu living on this mountain date back to 921 and the curse of Sugawara no Michizane.

This shrine was founded in 1353, when collecting money for the 北野天満宮 Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
Later in 1586, it was rebuilt on orders of the local lord, 里見義頼 Satomi Yoshiyori (1542 - 1587).
Later in 1808, it was rebuilt by priest 法印宥弘.
It was the protector shrine of the 9 villages comprizing Heguri, but during the Meiji restauration it lost its power.

The Yuhidaki Waterfall
Yuhidaki is a 30 meter waterfall located in Yamada Town in the northernmost part of Shuzenji Town in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
It flows down in two stages; the upper stage is 20 meter tall and the lower stage is 10 meter tall. The white lines of water flowing down on the columnar joint rock surface, which is typical to this region, are very beautiful.
The statue of Fudo Myoo is enshrined beside the bottom of the waterfall.



Double-flowered cherry trees that come into bloom in late April and hydrangea flowers that line the walking trail down to the basin in June offer wonderful color contrasts to the waterfall. In winter, on the other hand, the dashing flow of water freezes to create beautiful ice pillars. You will feel as if time has stopped when you see the sharp tips of ice plunging from above your head and protruding toward you.

If people throw impure things into it, like feces of cattle, the mountain will move, the valley will shake and a strong rainstorm will come.
This is the doing of 滝の主 the Lord of the Waterfall, a huge serpent.

The 赤滝の不動様 Fudo from Akataki "Red Waterfall" has special powers to heal eye disease.
Sometimes he changes into 大蛇 a huge serpent and people who happen to wintess this are cursed. Therefore all are quite afraid of this place.

While a monster was grilling mochi 餅 rice cakes, a 鯖売り vendor of mackerels hid in the ceiling and picked them up from there.
The monster thought, 火の神さま the God of Fire or Fudo Myo-O, has eaten them all.
Now the monster wanted to drink some hot Sake rice wine, but the mackerel vender stole the bottle too.
Again the monster thought, 火の神さま the God of Fire or Fudo Myo-O, has drunk it all.

In the hamlet of 柳原集落 Yanagihara they did not have a lion head mask for the bangaku 番楽 Kagura dance.
Around 1890 the villagers of the hamlet 稲沢集落 Inazawa tried to steal a lion head from Yanagihara, but he died, and the person he gave the lion head to died also.
They gave the lion head to 不動堂 the Fudo Hall, put people visiting the Hall died also.
The Lion Head must be cursed and all were quite afraid to come close to it.
One farmer then carved a dragon statue and they gave the lion head back to Yanagihara.



bangaku 番楽 is the local word in Akita and Yamagata for 山伏神楽 the Kagura dance of the Yamabushi mountain priests.
It has kept many old traditions.

Fudo Sama no Sugi no Ki 不動様の杉の木

Once upon a time someone cut down the sacred cedar tree of Fudo. When Fudo wanted to come down and rest on his tree, he found it gone and was very sad and angry about it.
The man who cut it down and the man who bought the wood both became ill. River Mogamigawa, where the stem was floated down to Sakata, begun to swell and flooded the town.

A monster was once roasting mochi rice cakes, when a vendor of mackerels 鯖売りpassed by. He sneaked to the roof and stole them all. The monster thought maybe お不動さま Fudo sama or 火の神 the Deity of Fire had eaten them.
So next he began to make hot sake. The vendor stole them too, but the monster again thought Fudo sama or the deity of fire had drunk it.

At the hut near the charcoal kiln 炭焼き小屋 above the Fudo Hall someone killed a cat and ate it.
He then became seized by the Inari fox 狐.

A younger brother had to move away from the family estate and came here.
At the Fudo Hall he had a vision: "Do you want a hot spring or to you want well water?"
He decided to ask for well water and indeed, a clean well was found right beside his new home.

A servant went out cutting the weeds in the morning and did not come back.
When asking the oracle at the temple Fudo-In the answer was - he had been possessed by a fox.
They made offerings of ritual rice at the back of the mountain to appease the fox.
And about five days later, the man was found safe at the border of the village.

A family did not take good care of 不動尊の掛軸 a hanging scroll of Fudo and suddenly all became ill.
So they gave the scroll to repair and then prayed in front of it every day.
Soon all were healed.

jookadoo no hi 常火堂の火 sacred fire at the Jokado Hall
When Hachiko, the founder of the Haguro temple, made a ritual fire, Fudo Myo-O appeared to him, wielding his sword and dripping his blood on gomagi 護摩木 the ritual wood. The blood became a flame, getting higher and higher.
Other versions say that the founder Hachiko obtained a sacred ball of fire and a ball of water and buried them at 荒澤 Kotaku.



Jookadoo 常火堂 Jokado Hall,
"the Hall of perpetual, sacred fire"

at the temple 荒澤寺 Kotaku-Ji at Mount Haguro, is the place where mountain priest 蜂子 Hachiko, the founder of Haguro, trained himself in mountain asceticism.
The flame has been burning since his time.

monjinsama モンジンサマ Monjin Sama
About 30 years ago, the child of one of 不動講 the Fudo Prayer Groups member became a stomach ache and its belly was swelling rapidly.
At the hospital they had no explanation and no diagnosis for this, but the child got worse and worse.
At the same time the first leader of the Fudo Prayer Group had a vision:
Monjin Sama e iku yoo ni モンジンサマへ行くように Go to Mister Monjin !
When he went to Mister Monjin, there was the same vision, saying
Y.M. の家を訪ねろ Go to the home of Mr. Y.M.
The child of this home was seriously ill, but even exorcistic rited did not help.
They tried to put some water into the mouth of the child, using 紙縒 a string made from twisted paper. Now siddenly the pulse became visible on the arm again.
Mister Y. M. was greatful the gods had helped his child.

When 渡辺四郎 Watanabe Shiro was about 19 years old he said on a fine day "We have to cut the mulberries, because it will rain tomorrow."
Nobody believed him, but it happened this way. And a few more times he could see the future.
People soon came to see him and ask o-ukagai オウカガイ his oracle advise from his estate deity, Fudo Myo-O.
The Shinto priest 羽田吉章 Haneda Yoshiaki made an offering of a stone sanctuary for Yamato Takeru and they could have a 石占 stone oracle there.
While Shiro san was away in the war, his wife took over with the stone oracles.

Once there was a huge flooding and and the waterfall changed its course. In the water of the flooded fields something was shining. When the farmers pulled it out, it was a statue of Fudo Myo-O. They built a small sanctuary to pray for it. The sanctuary later burned down but the statue was rescued in time.

In memory of Taira no Atsumori 平敦盛 and his flute now kept at the temple.
Samurai had to learn all kinds of aristocratic things to be able to please their masters.
Atsumori was famous for his flute playing,, aoba no fue 青葉の笛.

In the real war almost two hundred years after The Tale of Genji, the war epically recorded in The Tale of the Heike, the young Taira general Atsumori was killed by a Minamoto warrior named Noazane, near Suma. Noazane, father of a warrior son the same age as his victim, then discovered on Atsumori's body a flute, and, reflecting on the insanity of a world in which such killing takes place, he became a Buddhist monk to pray for Atsumori's spirit. That "Green-Leaf Flute" remains a treasure of Suma Temple to this day.
(The temple was founded in 786, some 400 years before the war and 900 years before Bashô's visit.)
Bashô plays with the tradition of sadness, isolation, death, and giving up the world at Suma, making the sound of the unplayed flute a metaphor for Zen koans (on silent flutes, clapping, and so on) that lightly dissolves into the pleasant shade of a tree under summer's sun in this desolate place. But note how that shade suggests again the "Green-Leaf Flute"—and the death of Atsumori. Light as the last line of Bashô's poem may seem on first reading, it grows deeper with the next. ...

At the Shrine 生田神社 Ikuta Jinja in Kobe Atsumori planted his walking staff into the ground and it grew into a bamboo.

Ikuta Atsumori (生田敦盛), sometimes known simply as Ikuta,
is one of many Noh plays derived from the story of Taira no Atsumori, a young Taira clan samurai who was killed in the 1184 battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Taking place largely at Ikuta Shrine, near the scene of the battle, it centers on Atsumori's fictional son, who seeks to meet his father's ghost.



- - - Plot summary
A monk opens the play, introducing himself as a disciple of famous priest Hōnen Shōnin, and explaining how Hōnen once found a baby boy in a box at the Kamo Shrine in Kyoto. The monk says that Hōnen raised the boy, and, that many years later, a young woman came forth revealing herself to be the boy's mother, and explaining that his father was Taira no Atsumori. As the boy now longed to see his father's face, Hōnen suggested that he should go to Kamo and pray there for a week.
The monk concludes his introduction by explaining that this is the last day of that week, and that he has come with the boy to Kamo once again, to pray. The boy then tells the monk that he had a dream while praying, in which a voice told him to go to Ikuta Shrine in order to see his father.
Traveling to Ikuta, the pair come upon a small hut, where they decide to ask to spend the night. The man in the hut explains that he is the ghost of Atsumori. Through the intervention of the Kamo kami, Atsumori explains, he has been granted by Yama, the lord of death, a brief opportunity to appear here in the mortal world, to meet his son. He regales his son with the tale of the battle of Ichi-no-tani, in which he was killed. A messenger of Yama then appears, and takes Atsumori with him, back to the realm of the shura, the hell of constant battle.
- - - Taira no Atsumori
Atsumori is a complex character. He is a great warrior from the Taira family but he also shows a sensitive side with his son. His philosophy on life also seems to contrast during the story. Before the meeting of father and son, Atsumori recites the five attributes of "beauty, perception, knowledge, motion, consciousness". He talks about how the body is weak and it is the soul that guards it from corruption. Yet, when he meets his son, he suddenly becomes concerned about the ratty garments he wears. The idea being that someone who comes from the Taira line should have a better presentation. When talking to his son, he has great pride in telling the story of the Taira family at its peak. As soon as he speaks of the downfall of the great Taira family, he is called back to Hell and just like the Taira family, he fades away.

Once a family prayed to Tengu sama to have children - and what do you know, next morning a baby was sleeping at their front door.
They took it in as their own child and loved it dearly. But they were quite busy with other things and the child died when it was just 4 years.
Now the family thought this was the punishment, because they did not care properly for the child of a Tengu.
They begun to venerate it as 薬師平の三倉の明神 the Deity of Mikura of Yakushidaira.

Guhin sama 狗賓様 - 稚児石 Chigoishi stone
At the river 小田沢川 Odakozawagawa there is a boulder called Chigoishi 稚児石 "Stone of a Child".
It is said if you rub a Daikon radish on the stone when it rains there will be blood flowing from it.
On the 8th day of the 4th lunar month during お薬師祭り the festival of Yakushi there is chigo mai 稚児舞 a dance of children. To be selected as a child to participate is a great honor but also a danger, because if the child makes a mistake during this dance, it will have bad luck.
Once a child took a wrong step and Guhin sama grabbed the child and flew away with it. He sat on a huge boulder at Odakozawagawa and ate most of the child.
The rest he took to river 片桐松川 Katakirimatsukawa and ate it.
Since then the dance of the children was stopped.

In Shigaraki town there is a 不動寺 Fudo Temple.
Once a man went missing there and people got out with drums and bells to look for him. They found him dead leaning on a tree on the Ise Road near the Ishi Yakushi stone 石薬師伊勢道. This must have been the doings of a Tengu.

長野県東筑摩郡麻績村山寺 / Yamadera Hi, Omi-mura, Higashichikuma-gun, Nagano

This secret statue was shown once every 50 years. Some people who have tried to get a look at it during other times have been heavenly punished with eye disease.
After a repair in 1947 the statue is now shown every second year on the 31 of December and on the 3rd of May.
The statue was made by Ennin in the year 849, when he traveled in Tohoku. He also carved 日光・月光菩薩 Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu, 四天王 Shitenno and 十二神将 Juni Shinsho.
He added a letter with his wishes for the prosperity of the region
「我いま、仏勅(ぶっちょく)を奉じて薬師如来を安置し奉る、日々に鎮護国家・五穀豊穣・除災招福の秘法を修して霊験利生(れいげんりしょう)を得せしめよ」

The temple was founded in 1415 by 聖冏上人 Saint Shogei.
The main statue is 無量聖観世音菩薩 Muryo Sho Kannon Bosatsu

The mother of Tokugawa Ieyasu, 於大の方 O-Dai-no-Kata, was buried at this temple in 1602. The Tokugawa clan took care of the tomb and it soon became famous.
The wives and children of other Tokugawa Shoguns are buried here too.
The old wooden buildings burned down in WWII, but the stone tombs are still as they were.

It looks as impressive as the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris -
said the novelist Nagai Kafu (1879 - 1959, who was born in the Koishikawa district.

Kafu has written about Haien no seirei: "Kitsune" (The Fox)
His father had seen a strange monk with a tail (in fact the fox Takuzosu) walking in the area in plain afternoon.

Yūten 祐天 Yuten Shami, 祐天上人 Saint Yuten Shonin
..... Yuten came to be patronized by Keisho-in, the mother of the fifth Tokugawa shogun Tsunayoshi, who is said to have called on him in his hermit's hut on the outskirts of Edo. In Genroku 12 (1699) he was in unprecedented fashion summoned to Edo castle and promoted from being a lowly wandering monk to the position of head priest of one of the Jodo sect's eighteen major temples in the Kanto area. In samurai terms, his status had become equal to that of a daimyo with a fief of 100,000 koku. The following year he was further promoted by an appointment as head priest to the Iinuma Gukyoji temple in Shimosa, the very temple where he had performed his first famous act of exorcism.
Finally in Hoei 1 (1704), he was placed in charge of Koishikawa Denzuin in Edo, a temple next in standing only to the Zojo ancestral temple at Shiba.

Hakuzooshu 伯蔵主 / 白蔵主 / 白蔵王 Hakuzoshu / Hakuzosu

A high priest from Dentsu-In. 覚山上人 Saint Kakusan Shonin, went to Kyoto and and on his way back had a monk named Hakuzo as his companion to teach him on the way. Hakuzo was an excellent student, but once when he had a high fever, he talked in his dream and said he was a fox. Now he is the protector deity of the shrines dedicated to
Hakuzosu Inari 伯蔵主稲荷.

Fox Spirit in the Guise of a Traveling Monk (Hakuzosu)
The vulpine figure dressed as a traveling monk, gazing intently at a nearby trap, is the protagonist of the popular kyōgen play Tsurigitsune (Fox Hunter).
In this comic morality tale, an old fox disguises itself as the monk Hakuzōsu, whose fox-trapper nephew has succeeded in ensnaring most of the fox clan. Recounting a variety of lore about the wily vengeance of the fox, the fox-cum-monk persuades the trapper to give up his trade. This drawing shows the fox prior to heading home, unable to resist the temptation to take the bait from the discarded trap. The trickster ends up caught, to the delight of the chagrined trapper who realizes he has been fooled by a fox in disguise.

Inari Daimyojin 稲荷大明神

Another fox posing for a monk was named 多久蔵主 (たくぞうす) was Takuzosu.
Also spelled 澤蔵主 / 澤蔵司 / 沢蔵
He came to the priest's seminar at Dentsu-In every night and took part in the discussions. He learned all the secret teachings of the Jodo sect within just three years.
In the year 1620, on May 7, the Head Master of the Seminar had a dream vision about Takuzosu:
"I am the Shinto Deity Inari Daimyojin from the Chiyoda castle of Edo. I always wanted to study about the Jodo sect of Buddhism and now finally my wish has come true.
I will now go back to be a Shinto Deity, but will stay on as the protector of your establishment! "
- - - - - And thus he became the 護法神 protector deity of Dentsu-In.

dainaru hi 大なる燈 The Great Lantern

Around 1720 there was a Kannon temple called 伝通院 Denzu-In. On the 25th day of the first lunar month there appeared a strange light like a lantern above the temple, slowly moving from North to South. It then moved up to the sky and became a star which glowed and sparkled every night. On the 8th day of the third lunar month there was a large fire, covering the area from Ushigome to 千住 Senju.
Later they found the bodies of many people who had died in the garden of this temple.

keiun 慶雲 auspicious cloud

In the year 1825 on August 15 the author 外岡北海 Sotooka Hokkai walked in the compound of Dentsu-In when he saw an auspicious cloud in five colors cruising over the village. The cloud turned white and colorful again and hang there for a while.
When people asked where it had come from, he could only say they had been there all the while.

mikkazuki shoonin 三ヶ月上人 Saint Mikkazuki

Saint Mikazuki thought the frogs were disturbing the students and ordered the frogs to shut their mouth.
Since then not a frog's voice had been heard in the compound.
This was called musei kaeru 無声蛙 the frogs without a voice.

nezumi 鼠 the rat

A monk from Denzu-In had killed a rat at four in the afternoon, when he was still in his youth. Just before dying the rat had bitten his finger.
Now every day at six in the afternoon his finger begun to hurt - for the rest of his life!

Tengu and Fudo 天狗と不動明王

In the temple 伝通院 Denzu-In lived a person named 岱雄 Taio. One day he went out begging with the monks but did not come back. Two days later they found him fainted in the back of the dormitory. When he came back to himself, he told the following story. When he wanted to make an offering, his body suddenly became light and he took off to the sky. Then he went to 成田不動 Narita Fudo to pray, spent some time between the woods talking to some Tengu who wanted to do Sumo wrestling with him. They gave him food and kept him for seven days.
The Tengu had also told him if he wanted to come back to them, he should face East to Narita and think of Fudo Myo-O, then they would come and fetch him again and give his some presents from Narita.

yuurei 幽霊 ghost

Once there were two men, 久米蔵 Kumezo and 文作 Bunsaku, working for 藤田廉平 Fujita Renbei. One day Renbei said, that Bunsaku became ill and died and had been buried at Dentsu-In.
One month later a woman named 志計 Shige said she had seen Bunsaku in 芳町 Yoshicho village. He had been peddeling material to make barrels. So all thought that it must have been his ghost.
Later they learned that Renbei had made a mistake, and it was Kumezo, who had died!
