There is a rock named nusutto ishi 盗っ人石 (盗人石 / 盗人岩) "thief's rock".
Once a thief stole the money offerings from the shrine at 石鎚山 Mount Ishizuchisan.
But he was caught by the Tengu from the mountain, who threw him high in the sky. The stone is where the thief landed.

At the shrine 太郎山神社 Tarosan Jinja, during the annual festival, there was a farmer who took some of the money offerings home.
But when he reached his house, he found his rice storage house all empty. So he run back to the shrine and put the money in the offering box.

Around 1715, there lived a rich merchant in 江戸神田鍋町 Kanda Nabe Cho. One of his servants went out to the public bath on the 15th day of the New Year. But soon someone saw him coming out at the back door, in traveling robes. Investigating further, they found the man had been travelling since the 13th day of the 12th lunar month of the year before.
So someone, maybe the local Tengu, must have acted in his place.

Once a man came walking down ヒナタ峰 Mount Hinata Mine when a coin with a hole came falling down from a pine tree. This mus be a trick of the Tengu, he thought.
He said out loud: "I will take this home and keep in venerated as a special amulet!", but he could not lift if from the ground.

Once a man faced a financial problem near a place called Zenibatake ゼニバタケ / 銭畑 "Field of Zeni coins" in front of the Tengu-Iwa.
Suddenly a Tengu appeared and spread a lot of zeni out for him.

At Mount サワオキ Sawaoki, where nobody lived, they found 中国銭 Chinese coins.
They say once upon a time a Tengu had lived here.

When they were digging a canal for 月ヶ瀬用水 the Tsukigase Waterway, a Tengu came and disturbed them, throwing stones.
One of the workers went to Shikoku to pray at Konpira san and after that, the Tengu did not show up any more.
One of the rocks along the Waterway is called Tengu Iwa 天狗岩 "Tengu Rock".

O-Degu Sama (Tengu Sama) is a male deity. Once he played with a woman on the other side of the river, throwing pebbles at each other.
These are the Tengu Ishi. They sometimes fall down from the mountain even in our time.

The Tenguiwa yoosui 天狗岩用水 Tenguiwa irrigation canal
is a name for two canals:
In 1604, 秋元長朝 Akimoto Nagatomo started the 越中堀 Etchubori canal .
In 1610, 伊那忠次 / 伊奈忠次 Ina Tadatsugu (1550 – 1610) built the 代官堀 Daikanbori canal.

During the construction of the Etchubori, there was a huge boulder blocking the way. There came a Yamabushi mountain priest (a Tengu) and offered some prayers - now the boulder could be removed.
Thanks to the canals the Akimoto clan could extend its fields and agriculture land.
The greatfull farmers built a temple in honor of Akimoto, 光厳寺 Kogan-Ji and
erected a memorial stone, 力田遺愛碑 Ryokudeniai no hi.

Later in the Meiji period, the fifth hydroelectric power plant in Japan was built here.

A hunter had been bewitched by a Tengu and made grappling with the root of a tree the whole night.

Mount Hotakayama 武尊山 is a place where the Tengu live and where the Shugendo priests have a training area.
There are sanctuaries for 大天狗、小天狗の祠 the Big and Small Tengu, a 天狗屋根 Tengu Yane and a Tengu-Iwa.

On 天狗岩山 Mount Tenguiwayama (772 m)
there lived a Tengu. When the Tengu died, the mountain got its name.
On its top is a huge boulder. If it falls down one day, it will be back in its position the next morning.
The mountain is used as farmland up to about 720 m.

At a nunnery in Kyotsuhata there lived a tabby cat loved by all. The cat even got アンズキ飯 rice with auspicious red beans. When the cat died, they put some of this rice in the coffin and carried it to Mount Tenguiwa. The nuns begun to chant
虎や虎や、南無虎や、アンズキ飯の御徳や
Dear Tabby, Oh, Dear Tabby, It is all by virtue of the read beans rice.

A child that had been missing for a while was heard crying on the mountain on the other side of the valley.
It must have been abducted by a Tengu. On the mountain near 舟原 Funabara there is a Tengu Ishi.

Once upon a time, a man had gotten secret teachings from a Tengu and could perform various rituals and spells.
At a festival, he exchanged questions and answers with a Tengu for a long time, but the other villagers could not hear or see a thing. Later they named the spot Tengu-Iwa and came to celebrate there once a year.

Once upon a time, a Tengu had come all the way from 岩木山 Mount Iwakisan in Aomori, but by mistake he hurt his eye at the 杉 pine tree. The Tengu cut down the tree and placed a huge stone in its place, this is now the Tenguishi, Tengu Ishi 天狗石 Tengo stone.

Nobutaroo 信太郎 Nobutaro
Once Nobutaro went with a friend to 有明山 Mount Ariakeyama. When they tried to jump over the Tenguiwa, their bodies became an enormous in size and they jumped over 馬羅尾谷 Baraodani valley and disappeared.
Nobutaro's father 久作 Kyusaku, who had lost his only son, went everywhere to look for him. He could not find him and had to work in the fields all alone from that time on.
He build a small sanctuary for Nobutaro, 信の宮 Nobu no Miya.

On top of 高社山 Mount Koshasan (1,352 m) there is a 天狗岩 Tengu Iwa.

Tenguiwayama 天狗岩山 (1,070 m)

Locates in the Eastern part of the mountain range, this peak is seldom climbed by mountaineers.
There are a few waterfalls on the way up.
山頂にはかなり古い年代の自然石石碑と山頂標板があるだけで、展望も西方が僅かに開けているだけです。地形図には山名がありませんが、滝ノ沢川の源頭と言うことから地元では呼んでいます。
地形図にもその名が記されている天狗岩山ですが、長野県に数多くある天狗(天狗山・天狗岳他)と名のつく山で、登山道がないのはこの天狗岩山だけかも知れません。

There was a Tengu Boulder near the waterfall 七代の滝 Nanayo no Taki, where a Tengu lived. Once a priest from the nearby temple used it to pee.
If the visitors in his temple wanted to eat Tofu from Tokoy, the Tengu went off to fetch it in no time.

This is a shrine in honor of Jinmu Tenno, the first emperor of Japan, built in 791 by Sakanoue Tamura Maro 坂上田村麻呂
This is the only shrine with this name in Japan.
There are six sub-shrines in the compound.
The way up to the shrine is via a huge stone staircase . . people come here to pray for becoming Number One in their field of work and achievement.
The priest in attendance lives in the nearby Hachiman Jinja Shrine.

This is the only shrine in all Japan registered with the Jinja Cho (Association of Shinto Shrines) under the name "Nihon-jinja Shrine."
As the only shrine bearing the name "Japan," Olympic athletes and many people involved in sports visit the shrine to worship.
A blue daruma from the Nihon-jinja Shrine accompanied Nadeshiko Japan (the Japanese women's soccer team) to the World Cup in Germany in 2011 and is said to have led the team to victory.
A blue daruma was also present at efforts to bring the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics to Tokyo – another undertaking which succeeded splendidly.
The shrine sits atop a hill, and talismans, charms and blue daruma are available at the shop Arai Shoten at the foot of the hill.

TEMPLE - Keisokuji Temples

The temple was once located on mount 峰相山 Mineaiyama (244m) in the North-West of Himeji.
The temple was founded in 1348. Its history is written down in the records of Mineai-Ki 峯相記.
In 1348 a mendicant priest came here, heard the story from the old head priest of the temple and wrote it down.
It relates to Empress Jingu Kogo 神功皇后 and a prince from 新羅 Shinra (Shiragi), Korea, who wanted to promote Buddhism in Japan and founded the temple.

同書によれば、神功皇后が三韓征伐の際に連れてきた新羅の王子が草庵を建立したのが当寺の始まりで、その王子は3世紀ほど後の敏達天皇10年（581年）に没したという。
伝承によれば、「皇后が新羅の王子を連れ帰ることにした。王子は皇后に渡海を無事に終えて日域（日本のこと）に着けば、伽藍を建てたいと願い出たが、仏法の是非のわからない皇后は明答しなかった。皇后は帰国後、西域の不安に備えて副将軍の男貴尊を播磨にとどめおき、王子を預けた。その後、王子は、峯相山に草庵をつくって、千手陀羅尼を唱えた」とある。
鶏足寺には空也や書写山圓教寺の開山・性空も来山したと伝わる。『峯相記』が書かれた1348年頃には寺勢はすでに往古にくらべて衰退していたという。
天正6年（1578年）、中国攻めの羽柴秀吉に抵抗したため、全山焼き討ちにあい滅亡し、廃寺となった。

According to the Nihon Shoki history, Nagata Shrine was founded by Empress Jingu Kogo 神功皇后 at the beginning of the 3rd century, when she came back from her war with Korea and was on her way to Kyoto.
Her boat suddenly came to a halt near the estuary of Buko river, now near Kobe port 武庫の水門 (Buko no suimon). When she prayed for an answer to this event, the deity appeared to her and asked to be venerated in this region. This happened through the oracle of the rooster, which sounded like the voice of the deity

鶏鳴の聞こゆる里は、吾が有縁の地なり
The place where the voice of the rooster is heard
shall be my home.

Keisokuji 鶏足寺 Temple Keisoku-Ji "Temple dedicated to the legs of a chicken"
Chicken Foot Temple.
This temple dates back to the Nara period. It is located in the North of Lake Biwako, on Mount 己高山 Kodakamiyama (923 m).
Priest Gyoki Bosatsu had build the temple Todai-Ji in Nara.
And then came the priest Taicho and founded the temple 飯福寺 Hanpuku-Ji in the direction to protect Todai-Ji from evil influence (kimon 鬼門).

The main statue of this temple is 十一面観音 Juichimen Kannon with 11 heads. It was placed in a temple named 観音寺 Kannon-Ji, founded by Gyoki in 735).
Next there was priest Saicho, founder of Mount Hieizan. He traveled in the footsteps of Gyoki for a while and came to this temple.
On his way he heard the voice of a bird (rooster - kei) and saw footprints (soku) of the animal.
He followed the footprints and found a run-down temple with a statue of Kannon. Now the name of the temple was changed to
Keisoku-Ji.
It seems the original temple was on top of the mountain, but Keisoku-Ji is now at the food of Mount Kodakamiyama.
The old temple building was lost to fire in 1933.
In the area is also the Shinto shrine 与志漏神社 Yoshiro Jinja with a 薬師堂 Yakushi-Do Hall.

Now the temple is famous for the red autumn leaves.

The statue is 52 cm high. End of Heian or beginning of Kamakura period.
In the compound of Keisoku-Ji was a hall dedicated to the Buddha of Medicine, 医王堂本堂.

During the next year, Hidesato Fujiwara fought with Masakado, obeying the emperor's instructions.
At this time, the highest Buddhist priest of the Sesonji Temple prayed for Hidesato's victory. Using Buddha's teaching, he offered the neck of Masakado which was made of clay. He kept praying every day and every night.
Finally on the eighth day, he fell asleep.
In his dream, he found a hen who had three legs treading on Masakado's bloody neck.
When he awoke to the hen's laughing voice, he saw Masakado's clay neck had three footprints clearly stamped in it.
In the 17th day of the full moon, Hidesato beat Masakado.
The name of Sesonji Temple has thus changed to Keisokuji Temple.

Oni to kadomatsu　鬼と門松　Oni Demon Legends

Kadomatsu are placed in front of houses, temples, shrines and official buildings to welcome the New Year deity, purify the entrance and drive demons and evil spirits out.

pine and bamboo 松竹は「鬼の木」 are trees which the Oni dislike most.
'Pine lasts for 1000 years and bamboo for 10,000 years'
is an old Japanese proverb. Pine and bamboo are popular materials for kadomatsu because people wish that Yorishiro, the place in which the deity lives, will last forever.

On the island 薩南大島 Satsunan Oshima people put out Kadomatsu for the New Year.
Once upon a time,
an Oni had come down from the sky to haunt the island, but the villagers caught him and bound him to a pine tree. The strong Oni pulled out the tree and run away. They caught him again and bound him again to a pine tree, this time so strong that he could not run away. Since that time the Oni are afraid of pine trees.

Once upon another time

they put up a Kadomatsu with bamboo in the middle, so that the Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Since then people put up Kadomatsu with bamboo.

大島郡 Oshima district 瀬戸内町 Setouchi

On the island 加計呂麻島 Kakeroma they put out Kadomatsu with bamboo.
The villagers know that once an Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Once upon a time, the villagers had tied a rabbit to the Kadomatsu pine tree. The oni came and pulled the tree out with its roots. The villagers followed the imprints of the roots on the ground and could eventually get the rabbit back.
Since then the Oni are afraid when they see a pine tree and do not come close to a home with such a decoration.

Once a villager got up early in the morning on the first day of the New Year. He saw three strange black clouds in the sky.
This was the figure of an Oni who had turned up to heaven in great fear when seeing the Kadomatsu in front of a home.

一志郡 Ichishi district 美杉村 Misugi

For the Setsubun ritual (the former New Year ritual), people used to put out a holly branch with the head of a sardine to ward off the Oni.
When making a Kadomatsu, they used two strong stakes, a bamboo basket with many "eyes", a black pot hanger and a branch of hiiragi 柊 holly. The beans for throwing had to be roasted very well.

If people walk through the pines of the Kadomatsu decoration, they will become Oni.

Nobutaroo 信太郎 Nobutaro
Once Nobutaro went with a friend to 有明山 Mount Ariakeyama.
When they tried to jump over the Tenguiwa 天狗岩 Tengu boulder, their bodies became an enormous in size and they jumped over 馬羅尾谷 Baraodani valley and disappeared.
Nobutaro's father 久作 Kyusaku, who had lost his only son, went everywhere to look for him. He could not find him and had to work in the fields all alone from that time on.
He build a small sanctuary for Nobutaro, 信の宮 Nobu no Miya.

有明山 Mount Ariakeyama (2268m).
Ariakeyama is also called
Shino Fuji 信濃富士 Mount Fuji of the Shino region.

Today, rather few people know Ariake-yama.
Of those who do, not many pay the mountain much regard. And, although the ridgeways between Yari-ga-take and Tsubakuro may be crowded enough to qualify as an Alpine "Ginza", fewer still pay much attention to Ariake-yama even when they find it rearing up at them on their way to the foot of Tsubakuro. Rather, their eyes are drawn to the more imposing heights beyond. Ariake, it seems, has been consigned to the meizan of past ages.

In former times, though, people would direct their gaze not to those indistinct higher peaks but to the shapely mountain right in front of them, revering Ariake-yama as the Mt Fuji of Shinano Province. In an age when the Northern Alps were still "terra incognita",
Ariake was celebrated by no less a poet than Monk Saigyō:

In Shinano on a day
It sent me awestruck on the way
To Hosono, the sight
Of mighty Ariake on the right

And then there are these lines by Monk Yūgyō:

By this moon's kindly light
I will not lose the narrow
Road to Hosono, although
It leads me under Ariake's height

According to an old chronicle, the mountain was opened in the second year of Daidō (807), when the great avatar Tohanachi Gongen was enshrined there at a place sacred to Ame-no-Uzume, where this goddess of dawn, mirth and revelry had manifested herself as a Buddha to save all living things. The mountain was once called Tohanachi-dake or "Door Away Peak", in honour of the legend in which the sun goddess Amaterasu shut herself up in a cave and was coaxed out again when the goddess Ame-no-Uzume performed a comical dance. At which the god Tajikarawo-no-mikoto wrenched away the cave's door and hurled it to earth at this very spot.

I came across this chronicle, the Record of Ariake's Inauguration (Ariake Kaizan Ryakki), in Mr Kumahara Masao's book on the dawn of Japanese mountaineering. By this account, the mountain mystic Yūkai, finding it lamentable that people had altogether given up climbing this sacred mountain, set out with his youngest brother in the sixth year of Kyōho (1721) together with fifteen or so villagers from the hamlet of Itadori at the mountain's foot, and found his way over trackless slopes to the summit. There they stayed overnight and descended the next day.

The first path up the mountain was presumably opened on this occasion, as the chronicle says. And after a small shrine was installed on the summit, people came every summer, from far and wide, in droves to climb the mountain.

For evidence that this custom lasted into the Meiji period, we need look no further than Walter Weston, the mountaineering missionary and so-called Father of the Japan Alps, who climbed Ariake on August 14, 1912, in the first year of Taishō. Presumably he'd heard of Ariake's reputation as a "meizan" of long standing. Most people associate Weston with Mountaineering and Exploration in the Japanese Alps (1896), and rather fewer are aware of his later book, The Playground of the Far East (1918), which also concerns itself mainly with the mountains of Japan. This is probably because there is no translation. It is in this later book that he describes his ascent of Ariake.

Nakatsuna koo 中綱湖 Lake Nakatsuna
Once upon a time, Mount Ariake and Lake Nakatsuna were fighting about which one was higher.
Then one day a pregnant woman came along and looked at mount Ariakeyama. She said laughingly: "Well Ariakeyama is not that high ... "
Since that time Mount Ariakeyama stoppe getting higher.

In the center of Mount Ariakeyama, there is a ball of light.
Because of this, the valley at its foot are never completely in the dark. They can never loose their way in a dark night.

魏石鬼八面大王（ぎしきはちめんだいおう） Gishiki Hachimen Daio is a legendary figure in Nagano.

At the foot om mount Ariakeyama there lived the farmer 弥左衛門 Yazaemon with his son 弥助 Yasuke.
The son has been abducted by a Demon named Hachimen Daio 八面大王. Yasuke grew up to be a fine young man. One day he helped a yamadori 山鳥 pheasant.
Three days later Yasuke med a beautiful young woman and married her. But Hachimen Daio became quite jealous and wild again.
When 坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro came tho the Kannon Hall to pray, He had a vision telling him to use the feathers of a pheasant tail to make an arrow.
When Yaskue heard this, he begun to worry. But his wife, the incarnation of the pheasant, offered her tail feathers and then disappeared.
With this arrow, the evil Hachiman Daio could be shot down and driven away.
- Another version of this legend tells of Yazaemon being kidnapped by Hachimen Daio while he was looking for medicinal herbs in the forest. His wife had bo bring up Yasuke all by herself.

Once upon a time in the Heian period, there lived a demon named 魏石鬼 Gishiki at Mount Ariakeyama in Nagano.

He used all kinds of bad tricks and witchcraft and eventually the court in Kyoto send Sakanoue to drive him away.

明科町 Akashina

momiji onibito もみじ鬼人 Demon Momiji "red leaves.
Momiji Onibito was the wife of Hachimen Daio, but they quarreled all the time. Then came Tamuramaro and killed Hachimen Daio. He also tried to kill Momiji, and his third arrow hit her.
But later she she came back, all crying with pain.

monomi-iwa no oni 物見岩の鬼 the demon from Monomi Rock
The demon from Monomi Rock was very bad, stole things and tormented the farmers.
Tamuramaro killed him also.

大町市 Omachi

Near the かや場 Kayaba reed field is a huge rock of about 1.5 m length.
Once uopn a time, when Hachimen Daio lived at Mount 矢沢山 Yazawayama a blacksmith brought his tools there to make weapons to fight this Oni, Hachimen Daio got angry and threw the rock in his way. They also say Tamuramaro used this rock to test his sword, so there is now a cut of about 30 cm in the rock.

Saga no In Kunshi 嵯峨の隠君子 / 嵯峨隠君子

He is Nr. 16 of the
. 日本の仏仙人16人 - The 16 Buddhist Immortals of Japan .

He was 嵯峨天皇の隠君子 the son of Emperor Saga Tenno.
He entered priesthood as a child before becoming an adult. As he grew older, his hair grew white while he kept his childlike figure.

Not much is known about him.

He lived during the time of Sugawara no Michizane (845 - 903) - Butsusen Nr. 15.
He lived as a hermit in 西山 Nishiyama. (Or maybe in 南山 Nanzan).
He liked to play the 琴 Koto.
He also got along well with the local Onigami Kishin 鬼神 Demon Deity.

老君子 / 隠れ若子

. Emperor Saga 嵯峨天皇 (786 – 842) .
Saga was a scholar of the Chinese classics. He was also a renowned as a skillful calligrapher.
According to legend, he was the first Japanese emperor to drink tea.

南山白頭翁 Nanzan Hakuto Okina
Old man with white hair from Mount Nanzan
He was 98 years old and still had full white hair, a face fresh like a peach.
Nanzan is another name for 吉野山 Yoshinoyama.
The old man lived in a small hut, he was not a farmer nor a merchant.
He only had a desk and a bamboo basket.
He had no money and no food provisions.
