The meaning of rice "omusubi" comes from the main deity of this Shrine:

高皇産霊神（たかみむすびのかみ） Takami musubi no kami
a deity for knotting "couples" together (in Japanese "musubu 結" and "en-musubi 縁結").
The popular name for a nigiri rice ball "musubi" came to be given to this shrine as a nick name.

Takamimusubi (高御産巣日神, lit. "High Creator")
is a god of agriculture in Japanese mythology, who was the second of the first beings to come into existence.
It is speculated that Takamimusubi was the original god that the Japanese imperial family claimed descent from.
According to Kojiki,
when the heaven and earth were created, Ame-no-Minakanushi was the first one to appear in Takamagahara, Takamimusubi the second, and Kamimusubi the third.

He is the father of several gods including Takuhadachiji-hime, Omoikane, Futodama (some versions Takammusubi is the grandfather of Futodama) and some versions Ame-no-oshihomimi. According to Nihon Shoki, he is the father of Sukunabikona.
According to Shinsen Shōjiroku, he is the grandfather of Tamanoya.
He is the grandfather of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, who descended on Ashihara no Nakatsukuni first as a member of the Imperial Family and was a grandson of Amaterasu, according to the Nihon Shoki.

Izumo-taisha is one of the shrines dedicated to Takamimusubi.
Hasshinden was once a temple that enshrined him.

The main statue is 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O.

On request of 井伊直弼 Ii Naosuke, the temple was built and the carver 山村一心 Yamamura Isshin made the statue of Fudo Myo-O in 1845.
In 1885 the main hall was built and the name 豊盛山延命院一心寺 established.
People come here to pray for 延命・商売繁盛 a long life and good luck in business.

The temple is related to 金蔵院 the temple Kinzo-In.

The script is by emperor 堀河天皇 Horikawa Tenno (1079 - 1107), who was blessed with a son after praying here.
The son became 鳥羽天皇 Toba Tenno (1103 - 1156).

The duck became alive at night and devastated the nearby fields.

Nekomata are a kind of cat yōkai described in Chinese and then Japanese folklore, classical kaidan, essays, etc.
There are two very different types:
- those that live in the mountains and - domestic cats that have grown old and transformed.
Nekomata are often confused with Bakeneko.

If a cat walks over a dead body, it will become 猫股 a Nekomata.
The family must take care and watch that no cat enters the room where a dead body is kept.

Once a Samurai wanted to drive out a nekomata 猫又 monster cat.
He shot an arrow at it and hit its hip. The cat fell from the tree and run away.
Soon after an old woman named お菊 O-Kiku was about to die.
When the Samurai touched her robes, he found his arrow.
The old women died soon afterwards.
13 years ago, the nekomata 猫又 monster cat had killed the old woman and shape-shifted into her form.

If a cat turns old, it becomes 猫また a Nekomat with two tails and dances on its hind legs.
People give it fish with Tofu and put a red tenugui 手拭 hand towel on its head. Thus the cat wll leave the home.

Priest 隠元 Ingen (1592 - 1673) from the temple 大滝寺 Otaki-Ji went upstream the river 吉野川 Yoshinogawa, where a fisherman attacked him and tried to kill him. But he was helped by a cat.
After three years keeping the cat, it turned to 猫また a Nekomata. It lived in the main hall of the temple and drove out all the mice. Soon it became a disciple of Priest Ingen.

A cat that had been kept well by an old woman turned to 猫また a Nekomata. It killed the old woman and ate it.
Then it shape-shifted to the old woman, but was killed by the son of the old woman.

If a dog attacks a human and eats it, that means the dog is ill and has a fire in his intestines, that get away with the human meat.
If a cat dies, an ill person will get better again.
If a person has died, the cat of the home has to be put into a cage, otherwise the dead will come back to life, drink some water and will turn into a nekomata 猫又 monster cat.

If a cat sits on a dead body, it gains special powers.
If a cat drinks waster from a bamboo ladle in the kitchen, it gains the power of 1000 people.
If one hits such a cat with a broom, it will fall down from the dead body. Thus a broom should be placed nearby.

In the shade of a valley there lived a nekomata 猫又 monster cat, which was much feared by the local villagers.
Then came the Samurai 伊藤基 Ito Motoi and killed it.

Sometimes a cat goes wandering after being fed for one year in a home.
In the mountain forest it looks for the stump of matsu 松 a pine tree and rub the pine resin on its skin. Then it seeks a place with sand to dry.
That way no arrow or bullet will penetrate it.
After two or even seven years, it will come back to the home and haunt the people.

Nekomata Inari Shrine 猫又稲荷 / 土橋稲荷神社 Tsuchibashi Inari Shrine

Around 1882, there lived a monster on 重倉山 Mount Shigemurayama (1029 m).
It often came down to the village and caused great damage. The villagers complained at the government in Takada. Some officials were sent out to drive away the monster. At 中ノ俣 Nakanomata they fought with the monster but could not kill it, neigher with arrows or guns. So they asked the skilled hunter 吉十郎 Kichijuro to hit it and thus got rid of it. But Kichijuro got hurt himself and died soon after.
The monster was placed in front of the official residence. It was a cat as big as a small bull.
Later the bones were buried in a ground that became Tsuchibashi Inari Shrine, better known as 猫又稲荷 Nekomata Inari Shrine.

There were three nekomata 猫又 cat monsters, at 掌善寺 Shozenji, ごま屋 Gomaya and きさ屋 Kisaya.
They wanted to capture the dead body of Grandpa Gomaya and decided to eat it.
The priest Gengo heard about this.
While the family was walking toward the graveyard, there was a loud thunder and all the people fled in fear.
In the black clouds there were the three cats, trying to get the dead body.
Now the priest from the temple Shozen-Ji hit the cat with his prayer beads.
The cat lost one eye and died soon after.

Once the cat from a temple got old and turned into a nekomata 猫又 cat monster.
At night it took the priest's robes, put them on and walked in the villge, chanting religious songs.
Finally they drove the cat away from the temple.
Five days later, they found the body of a drowned cat in the pond behind the temple.

In the outskirts of 小石川区 Koishikawa ward there was a bridge called Nekomatabashi. It had a bad reputation and children avoided to walk there.

Around 1700 at the temple 徳水院 Tokusui-In in the compound of 増上寺 Zojo-Ji there was akaneko 赤猫 a cat with red hair.
Once it was hunting mice when it fell from the beam of the roof.
It called out a short prayer, so people thought it must be a nekomata cat monster.
Then it disappeared.

Around 1796, six friends had gathered at a tea house to drink.
When the owner of the tea house later went to one of guest's home to collect the money, they told him the man had died seven years ago.
The owner remembered that the guest had gulped down three pieces of fish, head and bones and all . . . it must have been a nekomata 猫また monster cat.

Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (草薙の剣)
is a legendary Japanese sword and one of three Imperial Regalia of Japan.
originally called Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (天叢雲剣, "Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds"),
but its name was later changed to the more popular Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi ("Grass-Cutting Sword").

The third time the sword killed the thief before coming back.

In 1838, a pair of brothers had the dead body of their father pass though 一の鳥居 the first Torii gate of 熱田神社 the Atsuta Shrine.
They were banned from the town. The home of the brothers fell into decay and they both became kojiki 乞食 beggars.

At 妙心山正法寺 the Zen Temple Shoho-Ji there is a bottle with four stones buried in the ground.
There was a farmer passing the nearvy river who always washed four melons and four eggplants in the river, before he went to sell them. His load was always heavy but after washing the vegetables, it felt light.
The same happened to a vendor of salt.
There was also a bottle in the bamboo grove with water of a good fragrance.
This bottle was given as an offering to 熱田社 the Atsuta Shrine each year on the 5th of June.

The Atsuta Jingu Shrine Festival is one of the major festivals of Nagoya and the Chubu Region of Central Japan and will be held at the famous Atsuta Jingu Shrine. The festival is held every June 5th and is also known as Shobu-sai or Annual Celebration of Atsuta Jingu Shrine.
An imperial envoy is sent to the shrine to offer goheimotsu (strips of white paper for Shinto rituals). Atsuta Jingu Shrine and its environs are filled with such attractions as kentou makiwara (light tributes tied with straw), fireworks at Jingu Koen (Shrine Park), various martial arts and entertainment competitions, and kodomo mikoshi (portable shrines for children).

kamisama no o-fuda sama 神様のお札様 the amulet of the Deity
Around 1860, the amulets from Atsuta Shrine came raining from the sky in many regions of Japan.
The people rejoiced and danced, singing
ee ja nai ka , ee ja naika 「ええじゃないか、ええじゃないか」.
A farmer who was on a visit to 伊勢神宮 the Ise Jingu Shrine was walking through a forest, when the amulets fell down from the sky. He picked them up and went back home to 大井 Oi city.
But there the amulets had allso fallen from the sky and he waw quite surprized.

The Ee ja nai ka and the Meiji Restoration Hosono Yōsai 細野要斎 (1811–1878), an Owari domain official, left a voluminous diary titled Kankyō manpitsu 感興漫筆 (Random Jottings Composed at Leisure), containing accounts from 1836 to 1878.
Entries addressing the late months of 1867 describe the ee ja nai ka ええじゃないか phenomenon that developed in Nagoya. Yōsai's portrayals of the ee ja nai ka contradict its received image as a rowdy pandemonium in which the populace expressed their resentment against the Tokugawa regime.
Rather, what we see is a series of localized religious activities commemorating talismans (ofuda お札) that reportedly fell from the sky, many of them representing deities particularly popular in Nagoya.
Based on an examination of Kankyō manpitsu, this article argues that the relationship between the ee ja nai ka and the Meiji Restoration must be evaluated on a region-specific basis and that the narrative of the Meiji Restoration is not directly relevant to understanding the nature of the ee ja nai ka in Nagoya.

Atsuta Jingu no kaji 熱田神宮の火事 fire at Atsuta Shrine
At the foot of a large kusu no ki 楠 camphor tree a beggar was asleep.
He woke up because there was a fire coming from the tree and had almost reached the main Shrine hall.
The head priest wanted to save goshintai 御神体 the object of worship of the Shrine, but the key to the hall did not fit.
The father of the head priest came by and could open the lock.
The father had gotten a message from the Deity about the coming fire.
After the fire was quenched, the father went back to his home.
When the head priest went to his father's home to thank him, the father said he had never left his home and did not know about thie fire.
It must have been the Deity who had saved the hall.

Temple Jingu-Ji in Atsuta 熱田神宮寺
Gokiso, Showa Ward, Nagoya 医王山神宮寺 Iosan Jingu-Ji had been founded in 813.

When they wanted to construct a gate for 熱田神宮寺 the Temple Jingo-Ji in Atsuta and had dug into the ground for about one meter, something moved.
The workers were surprized and continued carefully. They found a bird in the ground, the size of a raven, which flew up and away.
Five days later the priest died.

One year they wanted to clean the sacred well of 熱田神宮寺 the Temple Jingo-Ji in Atsuta .
They scooped out all the water from the well and at the bottom in the sand they found a bird with black feathers like a raven. The bird flew up into the sky.
A few days later the priest of the 医王院 Temple Io-In died.
Maybe this was related, people wondered.

A farmer was plowing his field when the oxen suddenly stopped, jumped up and wanted to run away.
When the farmer dug at this place, he found a jinseki 神石 sacred stone.
The villagers built a small Shrine, callilng it 熱田神社 Atsuta Jinja, and venerated the stone

Fukubutsuzoo 福仏坊 a priest named Fukubutsuzo, Auspicious priet
Once there lived a strange man in the mountains of Aizu.
Ne never came down to the village and avoided meeting people.
Around 1645 a forest worker had seen him and said he looked like an old man of about 70 or 80 years.
In fact he had come to the village when he was about 25 tears old and told a villager that he had ovserved the calting of a bell in 熱田 Atsuta (Aichi).
This bell must have been more than a few hunded years old . . . how strange.

そのかみの祇園精舎を名におえる寺のみほとけおがむうれしさ

This temple of the Zen sect was built on request of 德川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu
by 金地院崇伝 Priest Konchi-In Suden in 1619 and moved to its present location in 1639.
Suden had been abbot in 京都南禅寺金地院 Kyoto, Nanzen-Ji Konchi-In before he came to Edo.
The main buildings burned down in 1767 and 1811 and finally during the Tokyo Air Raid in 1945.
The present hall was built in 1954.

Imprtant advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

おん　あろりきゃ　そわか　　聖観音おんばざらたらまきりく千手観音

The gemple was founded in 1600 by priest 僧無念 Munen.
In the beginning it was a retreat for a priest from temple 済海寺 Saikai-Ji.
During the Second World War, most of the buildings burned down, but the main hall was safe.
In 2013, most other buildings were recreated.
