Tenpyo Kodoo 天平古道 Tenpyo Kodo, Old Highway
located in 島根県松江市竹矢町 Shimane, Matsue city, Chikuya town.

The road leads from Matsue city, 意宇(いう)平野 Iu Hirano in a straight line
to 出雲国分寺 the Kokubun-Ji temple of Izumo.
It was built on request of Emperor Shōmu 聖武天皇 Shomu Tenno (701 - 755).
In the Nara period (710 - 794) it was 6 meters wide and about 486 meters long.
Now it is used by the local farmers.
In former times, this area was the center of the Izumo culture.
On the South side of the road were the buildings of the Kokubun-Ji temple.

Izumo Kokubunji 出雲国分寺
The remains of this temple are well preserved.
The pillars were placed on stone podestals.

From the 南門 Southern gate to the 中門 Middle Gate and then the main 金堂 Golden Hall.
There was also a 講堂 Lecture hall
and 僧房 Living quarters for the priests.
There was also 国分尼寺 a Kokubunji for Nuns.
The regional Lord of Izumo, 石川年足 Ishikawa Toshitari, had the temple built.

- quote -
ISHIKAWA no Toshitari (688 - 762)
was a noble who lived from the end of the Asuka period to the middle of the Nara period. He was a grandson of a Shonagon (lesser councilor of state) SOGA no Yasumaro, who became the head of the Soga clan after the Jinshin War, and was a son of a Sangi (councillor) ISHIKAWA no Iwatari. He was at the Shosanmi (Senior Third Rank) and was a Gyoshi-taifu, an equivalent position to Dainagon (chief councilor of state).

- - - Summary
Although his father Iwatari had been alive until Toshitari became more then 40 years old, his first investiture was very late: it was finally taken place when he was 47 years old, and it was after Iwatari's death. Subsequently, however, he showed his excellent skill in politics, and in 739, he was granted thick silk fabric and linen by Emperor Shomu in praise of his good government as a kokushi (provincial governor) of Izumo Province.
Around that time, the influence of the Fujiwara clan was temporarily becoming weaker because four Fujiwara brothers died one after another due to smallpox. However, once FUJIWARA no Nakamaro, the second son of FUJIWARA no Muchimaro, who was a close friend of Toshitari's father Iwatari, became powerful, Toshitari could also enjoy Nakamaro's patronage because Toshitari was a second cousin of Nakamaro. When the Shibi Chudai (the office handled the principal Empress Komyo's affairs) was established in 749, he started to support Nakamaro as a daihitsu (undersecretary), and shortly after that, he was ennobled as a Sangi (councilor) although he was already 61 years old.
He was dispatched to Gango-ji Temple in 756. From 757 through 759, he contributed to the enforcement of the Yoro Ritsuryo Code, the change of official post names, and the compilation of 20 volumes of Bessiki (operational regulations of the Yoro Ritsuryo Code), which was not enforced in fact, and he was appointed as a Gyoshi-taifu (or Dainagon) in recognition of his great work in 758 in spite of his great age of 70. This was the highest official rank among members from the Soga (or Ishikawa) clan after his grandfather Yasumaro, and he finally ended his life at the age of 74 in 762, when a dark sign began to be seen in the influence of Nakamaro due to Empress Komyo's death, which occurred shortly after Toshitari's taking office, and the rise of Dokyo, a priest who healed the Retired Empress Koken.
People appreciated his personality and said, 'He was honest and diligence, and was granted a post called Shohanji because of a great achievement as a governor and the head of the family,' and 'He was happy as long as he could read books while on duty,' after his death. In 1820, his epitaph was discovered in Settsu Province more than 1,000 years after his death, and it is now designated as a National Treasure. Additionally, Manyoshu (The Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves) includes one Japanese poem composed by Toshitari.

An ancient temple of the Rinzai sect.
This Zen Temple was founded in 1322 by 弧峰覚明 Koho Kakumyo (三光国師 Sanko Kokushi)
and is one of the oldest Zen temples in the Izumo region.
This is where Emperor Go-Daigo offered his prayers.
It has a number of cultural properties, such as a four-pillared gate with a gabled roof (Shikyakumon)
and 高麗梵鐘 a Korean copper bell, and there is a dry landscape garden of about 33,000 square meters behind the prients' chambers.
The quiet surroundings may make this place appear a rigid Zen temple,
but the azaleas that bloom in May are a sight to behold.

A Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple that is counted among of the oldest Zen temples in the Izumo region.
It was founded in 1322 by the priest Koho Kakumyo who had earned the trust of Emperor Godaigo and Emperor Gomurakami.
The precious large shikyakumon four-pillared gate at the end of the pine tree lined approach dates from the 1300s and escaped fires, helping it survive to the present day.
The precincts are also home to one of the prefecture's few Korean bells.
The temple is also a popular spot for viewing azaleas; the site of hundreds of them blooming together is superb.

Jizooji 地蔵寺 Jizo-Ji, Itano
無尽山 Mujinzan 荘厳院 Yogo-In 地蔵寺 Jizo-Ji

徳島県板野郡板野町羅漢字林東5 / Tokushima, Itano district, Itano town, Hayashi-Higashi

- quote
Jizō-ji is temple No. 5 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, or Henro.
It stands in an old residential area at the border of the Tokushima rift valley and the foothills of the Sanuki Mountains.
The long pedestrian approach is bordered by pines and cherry trees which are beautiful in spring. The path passes through a pair of stone columns before reaching the simple main gate. The temple guardians are cartoonlike figures in bright colours, and their eyes are a bit too close together.
Beyond the gate, there is a spacious plaza dominated by a big, knobbly gingko tree which is over 800 years old.
To the right is a statue of Kūkai on the pilgrimage and a simple raised belfry.
Next is the small Awashima Hall, home of the alter ego of the guardian deity of Awashima Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, who cures all illnesses.
The Daishi Hall is large and splendid, and unusual for its brightly painted wood carvings of animals.
Near the Daishi Hall is a bronze seated Buddha.
Buildings on the north side include the Nokyosho and a hexagonal building housing a golden Kannon statue.
There's also a water harp that mimics the sound of the instrument called koto.
Facing the Daishi Hall is the Main Hall. The principal image is 勝軍地蔵 a Shōgun Jizō statue. The Jizō is mounted on a horse wearing armour, with a staff in his right hand and a jewel in his left hand. He drives out wrongdoers and prevents disasters. On the left side of the temple veranda sits a pensive-looking Binzuru statue.
Behind the Daishi Hall, a path leads past an old cemetery and up some stone steps to the Inner Sanctuary, which is big enough to be its own major temple compound. From the top of the steps, you can look down on the temple and the Tokushima rift valley beyond.
The Inner Sancturay is called the Rakan Hall. It's an elongated U-shaped building housing life-sized statues of 500 rakan, or arhats, semi-enlightened followers of Buddha.
It also houses a magnificent, larger than life statue of Kūkai.
- History
Kūkai founded the temple in 821 at the request of Emperor Saga.
He carved a Shōgun Jizō statue of about 5.5 cm and enshrined it in the principal image. After that, the imperial family visited the temple devotedly for three generations.
Due to their faith in the Shōgun Jizō, military commanders such as Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoshitsune, and the Hachisuka clan made many donations to the temple. With these donations, the territory of the temple was expanded, and there were about 300 branch temples in the provinces of Awa, Sanuki, and Iyo. However, during Chōsokabe Motochika's unification of Shikoku, the Jizō-ji Temple was burned down.
After that, Jizō-ji was rebuilt and expanded by the efforts of successive priests, monks, and believers, and the temple compound is still extensive.
The Rakan Hall was built in 1775 by two brothers who were priests of the temple.
However, it was damaged by fire in 1915 and rebuilt in 1922, and now only around two hundred of the statues remain.

Jōkan Shōnin, who was the officiating priest of the Kumano Gongen in Kīshū, carved a statue of the Enmei Jizō in a sacred tree here, and Kūkai placed a statue he carved in its belly.
