tawara ushi, tawaraushi 俵牛 cow with straw bundles

An auspicious amulet for a good rice harvest. Well loved by the farmers of the Edo period.
Cows and horses were the most important means of transportation.
Cows were much slower than horses, but in the end they all reached their goal.
One of the oldest versions is a doll from Fushimi 伏見人形, Kyoto.
The dolls are made of clay or papiermachee.

下川原の俵牛

About 8 cm high. This cow does not only carry rice bundles, but also daikon 大根 big radishes.
This was an amulet for rice and vegetable farmers.
The radish is also an amulet for the fertility of the family.
