. Sato no Michi シュガーロード / 砂糖の道） sugar road .
The road between Nagasaki and Kokura (Ogura) 小倉, then on to Kyoto during the Edo period.
A lot of Western cultural elements travelled this road, when even very expensive white sugar was only available at the island of Dejima.
Towns along this road were able to produce sweets with white sugar.
The road was used by the army during the Satsuma rebellion in 1877.

Yamaga Onsen 山鹿温泉 hot spring

Yamaga Onsen was first documented as a hot spring town in the 倭名類聚抄 "Wamyo Ruijusho" a historical dictionary written in the Heian Period over 1,000 years ago.
Legends say that the hot spring was discovered by Shichiro Uno, a military commander of the Heian Period, who found an injured deer nursing itself in the water of the spring. The soft water is so abundant that a famous folk song claims "A thousand homes in Yamaga, and not a tub in sight," as back in olden times locals could wash directly in the water sources themselves.

Buzen Province (豊前国 Buzen no kuni)
was an old province of Japan in northern Kyūshū in the area of Fukuoka Prefecture and Ōita Prefecture. It was sometimes called Hōshū (豊州), with Bungo Province. Buzen bordered on Bungo and Chikuzen Provinces.
The ruins of the ancient capital of the province were found near Toyotsu, Fukuoka. The castle town of Kokura was also in Buzen, and a seat of many feudal rulers.

kappa かっぱ
豊前国に河幅が広く徒歩で渡る川があり、夜に渡ろうとすれば必ずかっぱが出て相撲を取ろうとする。小笠原信濃守の家臣・大つか庄右衛門の家中に力の強い者がおり、相撲を取ったところ、かっぱは動きが早く、また捉えてもウナギのようにすりぬける。そして全身針のように尖っていたので傷だらけとなり、その者は病気になってしまった。
. . 豊前国に河幅が広く徒歩で渡る川があり、夜にそこを渡ろうとすれば必ずかっぱが出て相撲を取ろうとする。小笠原信濃守の家中の大つか庄右衛門と従兄弟のせ川藤吉がこの川を渡ろうとしたところ、かっぱが出て来たが、すぐに刀で切った。死体を見ると、子供の様な体つきで短い髪、顔色は真っ白で、爪は猫のようだったという。

豊前国千丈ガ滝の山に観音堂があり、その堂前に池がある。その上の橋の上で涼んでいると、水中から鮧が躍り上がり、廻りながら水を１尺ほど離れると、直ちに空へ昇っていった。するとたちまち雨が降った。これは竜に違いないと、目撃した２人は語った。
. . . 豊前国に千丈が滝という大きな滝があった。そこにある観音堂の前の、みたらしの池に架かっていた橋の上で、大塚庄右衛門とせがわとう助の2人が涼んでいたら、池の中から1尺ほどの鯰が躍り出て、空中へ飛び去った。すると急に暴風雨が起こったという。

豊前国にある千丈が滝という滝の下の川にむなぎ（うなぎ）がいる。このむなぎは耳がうちわのように大きくひらめき、川底を這い回っていた。その体長は13間2尺（約24メートル）ほどあったという。

shio ga hiraku 潮が開く
豊前国門司にある早鞆明神社の前は深い海で、社人が宝堂に納められた鋒剣を胸に当て、毎年元日の丑時に海底に入れば潮が開く。そして海底にある階段に社人が立ち、ワカメを一鎌切って階段を上って帰ると、たちまちに潮が満ちるという。もしも二鎌刈ると溺れて難にあう。

継体天皇の時、豊前国上毛郡の求菩提山にある護国寺に鬼神がいて人民を悩ませていたが、開基卜仙が法力によって調伏させ、瓶に封じて嶺の上に埋め、その霊を祀ったという。

豊前国築城郡の百姓・才次郎の8歳になる子は、肩より足の裏まで1尺4寸しかないが、容顔端正にして言語もはっきりしており、決して廃人ではなく小人だった。生まれた時は両手の掌から出ないほどだったという。

shiratori 白鳥
大足彦天皇（景行天皇）は豊国直等の祖先である菟名手を豊国に派遣し、菟名手が豊前国中津郡中臣村にやってきた時、白鳥が北から飛来してきた。菟名手がその鳥を手に取ると餅に変わり、またさらに芋草数千株に変わったという。それ故に天皇はこの地を豊国と名付け、菟名手に「豊国直」の姓を与えた。

大足彦天皇（景行天皇）は豊国直等の祖先である菟名手を豊国に派遣し、菟名手が豊前国中津郡中臣村にやってきた時、白鳥が北から飛来してきた。菟名手がその鳥を手に取ると餅に変わり、またさらに芋草数千株に変わったという。それ故に天皇はこの地を豊国と名付け、菟名手に「豊国直」の姓を与えた。
