Kasakake Fudo 笠懸不動

The name Kasakake refers to the geography, a plain named 笠懸野 Kasakakeno along the river 渡良瀬川 Watarasegawa in the form of a 扇状 fan.
Kasagake or Kasakake is a sort of Japanese mounted archery.
In contrast to 流鏑馬 yabusame, the types of targets are various and the archer shoots while riding past the target.
The temple was built in the Kamakura period. When 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi Kukai passed here, a statue of 白衣観音菩薩 Byakue Kannon in white robes made by 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu was venerated here.
In 1335, 南の御方 Minami no Onkata (Taira no Tokiko) came to live here.

A wealthy man named 赤堀の道元 Akahori no Dogen had a daughter of 16 years. She went to Mount Akagisan 赤城山, jumped into the swamp and became a huger serpent.
Her friend, who did not dare to go back home, also jumpee in and became kani カニ a crab. The water has been clear since then.
In rememberance of her death, the family goes to the swamp to pray and bring offerings of sekihan 赤飯 red ritual rice and sake 酒 rice wine in a juubako重箱 food box with many layers. The box usually sinks down to the bottom and later comes up, all empty.

In Kasakake village there lived a child with ill legs. When this child died, the parents had a special ritual with in 印 a mark for his burial.
Later another child was born with this mark, so it must have been a rebirth.
