Owarichoo 尾張町 Owaricho district
Chuo, 銀座 Ginza fifth and sixth district

In the Edo period, there lived mostly townspeople and craftsmen in this area.
There were also many cloth and kimono shops, like 布袋屋 Hoteiya, 恵比寿屋 Ebisuya and 亀屋 Kameya.
Some craftsmen make special 雛人形 Hina dolls for the Hina Doll Festival.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu first came to Edo, this area was all sea, a great Inlay until Hibiya.
In 1603, Ieyasu ordered the landfills of this area. The Lord of Owari became the supervisor of the landfill here, hence the name of the area.

Hakozakichoo, Hakozakichō 箱崎町 Hakozaki-Cho district
Chuo, 日本橋 Nihonbashi 箱崎町 Hakozakicho
another spelling is 筥崎.

Nihonbashihakozakicho

This district is closely related to the Shrine 富岡八幡宮 Tomioka Hachimangu on the other side of the river 隅田川 Sumidagawa.
And this Hachimangu has close ties to 筑前国筥崎宮 the Shrine Hakozaki no Miya in Chikuzen (now Fukuoka).
In olden times there was a pond named 箱崎池 Hakozaki Ike in this district.

Around 1640 the land was reclaimed along the river Sumidagawa and in the North were 箱崎町一・二丁目 Hakozaki-cho first and second district, in the West 北新堀町 Kita-Niihori-cho.
In 1665 船見番所 a lookout for ships was built and it became the center of the river transportation.

Around 1690, the younger brother of the rich lumber dealer 奈良屋茂左衛門 Naraya Mozaemon (Nara-Mo) named 安左衛門 Yasuemon erected a row of strong fireproof kura yashiki 蔵屋敷 warehouse living quarters.
In 1698, the bridge 永代橋 Eitaibashi was constructed and even more business concentrated here.
In 1740, the Kurayashiki were bought by 三井家 the Mitsui Family.

Hamamatsuchoo, Hamamatsuchō 浜松町 Hamamatsucho, Hamamatsu district
Minato, 浜松 Hamamatsu 浜松町一丁目および二丁目 first and second sub-district

In the Keicho period (around 1600), the headman of the district was 奥住久右衛門 Okuzumi Kyuemon, who was also the Daikan magistrate at temple 芝増上寺の代官 Shiba Zojo-Ji.
The area was called 久右衛門町 Kyuemon cho district.

In 1696, 権兵衛 Gonbei from Hamamatsu in Shizuoka became headman and the district was named after him,
芝浜松町 Shiba-Hamamtasu cho district, with four sub-districts.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to Edo castle in 1590, this district developed greatly and in 1598, Ieyasu had his family temple built there, 増上寺 Zojo-Ji.

. Zōjō-Ji 増上寺 Zojo-Ji and the Shiba port district .

Many Daimyo regents built their estates in this area to be close to the Shogun.

Now Hamamatsu-cho is a business and commercial district south of Shinbashi, with views of Odaiba and the Rainbow Bridge.

Completed in 1970, the building is one of Japan's earliest skyscrapers. Upon its completion, the 163-meter-tall WTC Building took the title of Japan's tallest skyscraper from the Kasumigaseki Building; it retained this title until Keio Plaza Hotel's North Tower was completed one year later.
The building is home to World Trade Center Tokyo, a member of the World Trade Centers Association. It is primarily used for office space, but it also includes retail stores and restaurants. The building's top floor is a visitor observatory. - quote -
Kyū Shiba Rikyū Garden (旧芝離宮恩賜庭園)
also known as Kyū Shiba Rikyū Onshi Teien ("Former Shiba Villa Garden")

is a public garden and former imperial garden in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. The garden is one of two surviving Edo period clan gardens in modern Tokyo, Japan, the other being Koishikawa Kōrakuen Garden in Koishikawa, Bunkyō, Tokyo. Kyū Shiba Rikyū is often regarded as the most beautifully designed garden in Tokyo, and was once called the "most beautiful" scene in Japan.[
..... The site of the Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden was originally part of Tokyo Bay.
The land was reclaimed between 1655 and 1658. In 1678 the site was used for the official samurai style residence of Ōkubo Tadamoto (1604–1670), member of the Ōkubo clan and an official of the Tokugawa shogunate. The residence garden was designed by garden designers from the Odawara Domain, until 1614 under the rule of Daimyōs from the Ōkubo clan. The garden was then known as Rakujuen. At that time, the garden included a beach to Tokyo Bay, however, as Tokyo expanded the sea next to the garden was reclaimed, and there is no connection to the ocean anymore. A remaining ocean water inlet is not used.
..... The garden has an area of 43,070.53 m2. There is a circular path around the central pond Sensui (9,000 m2), which is the focus of the garden. Originally this was a salt water pond, however, as the land around was reclaimed the pond was converted to freshwater. The pond includes four islands, the central Nakajima and the smaller Ukishima, Oshima, and Yukimi-toro. Two bridges allow crossing of the pond via the larger island Nakajima. Oshima is close to the shore and can also be crossed. The inspiration for the pond originates from West Lake in Hangzhou, and the rocks on the central island represent the mountains of West Lake. One corner of the pond includes a sandy beach area named Suhama, although swimming is not recommended.
The highest point of the park is the Oyama hill, from which a dry waterfall made from stone named Karetaki flows. A stone lantern provides supposedly a good spot for snow viewing, although Tokyo rarely gets snow nowadays. Notable is also the wisteria trellis in the picnic area, especially when the wisteria blooms at the beginning of May.
Besides the garden office there is also a Japanese Archeryrange and a children's playground. The garden is surrounded by High-rise buildings and Skyscrapers. ...

Kogota (小牛田町 Kogota-chō) was a town located in Tōda District, Miyagi
the Yamanokami Shrine and various ancient burial mounds dating from before 250BC.

anahori あなほり "the one making holes"

- quote -
Mujina (貉) is an old Japanese term primarily referring to the Japanese badger.
In some regions the term refers instead to the raccoon dog (also called tanuki) or to introduced civets. Adding to the confusion, in some regions badger-like animals are also known as mami, and in one part of Tochigi Prefecture badgers are referred to as tanuki and raccoon dogs are referred to as mujina.
..... In Japanese folklore, like the fox and the raccoon dog, badgers are frequently depicted as yōkai that shapeshift and deceive humans.
These badger demons (mujina) often take the form of an attractive woman with a promiscuous nature, usually causing mischief in their partners lives. They are first seen in literature in the Nihon Shoki in the part about Empress Suiko's 35th year (627), where it states,
"in the second month of spring, there are mujina in the country of Mutsu (春2月、陸奥国に狢有り), they turn into humans and sing songs (人となりて歌う)"
demonstrating that, in that era, there was the general idea that mujina shapeshift and deceive humans.
In the Shimōsa region, they are called kabukiri-kozō (かぶきり小僧), and they would shapeshift into a kozō (little monk) wearing a strangely short kimono with a kappa-like bobbed head, and frequently appear on roads at night without many people and say, "drink water, drink tea (水飲め、茶を飲め)."
The story in Lafcadio Hearn kaidan collections called "Mujina" about the witnessing of a faceless ghost (a noppera-bō) is also well-known.

In this district in Azabu, there lived quite a lot of bagders, digging holes in the ground, hence the name.
At the end of the slope 狸穴坂 (麻布狸穴町) Mamianazaka, Mamiana-zaka there was a large hole.
In 1644, the Shogun 徳川家光 Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered a group of men to observe this hole and write a record about it.
At the top of the slope was a plain where many Samurai estates were located.
At the bottom of the slope the townspeople lived.

Nowadays, the embassy of Russia and Namibia are located at the Mamianazaka.

In the Edo period, it was part of the 豊島郡 Toshima district of 飯倉町 Iigura, later called
飯倉狸穴町 Iigura Mamiana cho.

Around 1874, the Marine built an observatory here, then relocated to 麻布台2丁目 Azabudai second sub-district.

At the bottom of the slope three was a 蕎麦屋 Soba shop called Tanuki Soba 狸蕎麦(作兵衛蕎麦 Sakubei Soba), which featured rather dark Soba buckwheat noodles.
In the Edo period, badgers from this area came to live and dig their holes in 徳川の大奥 the harem of Edo castle. A man named 内田正九郎 Uchida Shokuro was ordered to get rid of them. The souls of the badgers are now venerated at Sakubei Soba and he called his food "Tanuki Soba".

1978, 麻布狸穴町 Mamiana and 麻布永坂町 Azabu Nagasaka were still used, because the people living here insisted on keeping an old tradition.

Onden mura village Shibuya

Ondenmura, Onden mura 隠田村/ 穏田村 Onden village "with secret fields"
渋谷区 Shibuya 神宮前 Jingu-mae first to sixth sub-district
onden could be written 穏田, 隠田 or 恩田.

onden 穏田 referes to secret fields, which the farmers kept hidden and did not have to pay taxes to anyone.
Another theory points to the Samurai clan 恩田氏 Onda shi, who ruled this area on orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who changed the written name to 穏田.

This name existed before the Edo period.
The region to the South-West of central Edo was a rice farming area, where waterwheels had been built in the late Edo period.
The river flowing to this region was the 穏田川 Ondengawa (further down called 渋谷川 Shibuyagawa).
Most of the Shibuyagawa area was a swamp and the villagers had to drain it first. Along the river they could then transport the grains.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu came to Edo, he gave this area to the people from 伊賀 Iga.
Around 1820, it came under the jurisdiction of the Edo Bakufu government, but remained a farming district.

穏田川 Ondengawa

To the East were estates of Samurai like 浅野光晟 Asano Mitsuakira 安芸守 Aki no Kami (1617 - 1693), 戸田忠時 Toda Tadatoki (1637 - 1712), 水野忠政 Mizuno Tadamasa (1493 - 1543) and others.
After the Meiji restoration, many military personnel and generals came to live here.

Around 1909, with the rapid modernization, the rice fields disappeared and the busy town spread to this area.
Prior to 1965, Onden, referred to the low-lying area close to Meiji Street and the Shibuya River.

The name ONDEN disappeared from the official names in 1965, but remained in

The Shibuya River (渋谷川 Shibuya-gawa)
is a river which flows through central Tokyo, Japan.
The river is 2.6 km in length originating close to Shibuya Station and passing through Shibuya and Minato wards before merging with the Furu River near Hiroo and flowing into Tokyo Bay near Shiba Koen park.
The Shibuya River banks are predominantly unlandscaped; the major tributary of the river, the Onden River, originates in Sendagaya and passes largely unnoticed directly under Cat Street in the heart of Ura-Harajuku. The Onden River merges with the Uda River in central Shibuya forming the Shibuya River which then flows directly under Shibuya Station as a covered concrete drain.
Redevelopment plans for Shibuya Station include the prospect of a more accessible Shibuya River with landscaping and pedestrian access.
