Irifune 入船 Irifune district
Chuo ward, Kyōbashi Area (京橋地区). 一丁目- 三丁目 first to third sub-district

former 入船町 Irifunecho
present day Irifune first to third sub-district, 新富 Shintomi first and second sub-district and 明石町 Akashicho.
In January 1971, on the wish of the citizens, the name 町 CHO was dropped.

In the West of the area was the river 入船川 Irifunegawa.
Irifune means a place where ships come in.

In 1868, the area was designated as 外国人居留地 for foreigners to live.
It used to have nine sub-districts.
In 1899 the designation for foreigners was revoked. The 8th and 9th sub-district became part of 明石町 Akashicho. The remaining sub-districts became smaller and were reduced to only three.
Most of the many moats and canals were lost to new road constructions.

Now it is an area of high-rise buildings and mansions. Many of these add the word 銀座 Ginza to their naming.

From Shintomi toward Irifune 新富町 -入船町

River Irifunegawa
It was a small canal of about 400 m, from the 桜川 Sakuragawa toward the 築地川 Tsukijigawa. The land has now been relcaimed.

Shintomi 新富 Shintomi district "new riches"
Chuo, Kyōbashi Area (京橋地区). 新富一丁目, 新富二丁目 first and second sub-district
It used to be part of Kyobashi.

The former name was 新富町 Shintomicho.
There used to be two areas named 新島原 Shinshimabara and 大富町 Otomicho. When they were united, one character from each area was used for the new naming.
In January 1971, on the wish of the citizens, the name 町 CHO was dropped.

In the early Edo period there was a red-light district in the area, and many Samurai estates.
In 1868, the area was designated as 外国人居留地 for foreigners to live.
A lot of government buildings are in this area.

- quote Kabuki -
The Morita-za (森田座・守田座), also known later as the Shintomi-za (新富座),
was one of the major Kabuki theaters in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during the Edo period and into the beginning of the 20th century. It was established in January 1660, and run by the Morita family of actors until its destruction in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake which destroyed much of Tokyo.

..... In 1858, after a number of closings and reopenings of the theater, the Morita-za opened once more, changing its name, however, from 「森田座」 to 「守田座」 (both are pronounced the same, as "Morita-za"). The character 守 (mori) means "protection", and this change was perhaps made to seek better luck for the theater, and protection from fire and from bankruptcy. The theater would then be moved and rebuilt in 1872, leaving Saruwaka-chō for Shintomi-chō; the new building was larger, and had a few new features, such as indoor toilets and a seating section for foreigners. A few years later, in 1875, the theater was renamed Shintomi-za, after the district, in celebration and recognition of its becoming a stock company (sogo shosha).

- quote -
"Shintomi-za Children's kabuki" in Edo
Chuo-ku is the birthplace of Edo kabuki, and there are many playhouses since the Edo period. Kabuki has been widely loved by the common people. In Shintomi-cho, Shintomi-za Theater was opened in 1875 and it was crowded as an entertainment town. Today, there is no trace of it in the town, but there are still many companies such as costumes and sceneries which support kabuki.
In the spring of 2007, "Shintomi-za Children's kabuki" party was established in this town.
The origin of this event was the encounter with children kabuki at Hikiyama Festival in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. We were excited about the lovely children kabuki and the enthusiasm of the town's people who supported it, and we thought "We can do it in Shintomi-cho!".
- Representative Fumiko Morokawa

- quote -
... best known as the home of Ueno Station and Ueno Park.
Ueno is also home to some of Tokyo's finest cultural sites, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, and the National Science Museum, as well as a major public concert hall. Many Buddhist temples are in the area, including the Bentendo temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten, on an island in Shinobazu Pond. The Kanei-ji, a major temple of the Tokugawa shoguns, stood in this area, and its pagoda is now within the grounds of the Ueno Zoo. Nearby is the Ueno Tōshōgū, a Shinto shrine to Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Fishermen from the town of 播磨国明石 Akashi in Harima no kuni (now 兵庫県 Hyogo) moved here. The Bay reminded them of home.
The Akashi district in Edo was rather small, on the East side of 明石橋 Akashibashi.
It also contained the districts of 十軒町 Jikkencho and 船松町二丁目 Funamatsucho, second sub-district.
Samurai and townspeople lived here side by side.
The story of the 47 Ronin from Harima is famous.

Akashi District (明石郡 Akashi-gun) Hyogo
was a district in Hyōgo Prefecture. It was formed in 1879 from the territory of the Edo period Akashi Domain. The district ceased to exist on 10 January 1951, when its last remaining municipalities merged into Akashi city. The area that the district once covered is now within Akashi city and western Kobe city.
- - - - - History
At the beginning of the Meiji era, the Akashi Domain consisted of the town of Akashi and 144 villages. In July 1871 the feudal system of domains and provinces was abolished and Akashi Domain became Akashi Prefecture. In November of the same year Akashi Prefecture merged into Himeji Prefecture, and a few days later it changed its name into Shikama Prefecture. In August 1876 Shikama merged into Hyogo Prefecture. On 8 January 1879 the national law on districts, wards, towns and villages was put into effect in Hyogo Prefecture and the district of Akashi was formed. The district's administration was located in Akashi town. When a new law on towns and villages came into effect in April 1889, the towns and villages of Akashi District underwent various mergers to form the following twelve towns and villages: ...

Magome no sanbon matsu 馬込の三本松 three pine trees at Magome
at 北馬込二丁目 Kita-Magome second sub-district

They date back to the Muromachi period and lived more than 600 years. Pilgrims to the Ise Shrine passed here on their way back, planted the trees and used it as a prayer place to express their gratitude for a safe trip.
The three trees were lost in the early Showa period, but names of shops and a bus station in the area still remind of them.

In this area there used to be many pine trees, called the Pine Field of Magome village 馬込村松原 Magome mura Matsubara.

There used to be a mound, Sanbonmatsu-zuka 三本松塚, thought to be a Kofun mound, in the compound of the
Shrine 天祖神社 Tenso Jinja. a shrine also refered to as 伊勢宮 Ise Shrine.
2 Chome-28-14 Kitamagome, Ōta.
It was the protector shrine of the valleys of Kita-Magome, 北久保 Kitakubo, 松原 Matsubara and 堂寺 Dotera.

Further research in 1992 found that the moat was not a Kofun after all.

Magome Writers' Village (馬込文士村 Magome Bunshimura)

- quote -
In the early 1900s, the area of Magome in Ota Ward attracted a number of Japan's top writers and artists. Novelists, sculptors and calligraphers all moved to the quiet countryside outside the capital to practice their crafts in a supportive community. Today, their cultural contributions are remembered in a comprehensive walking trail around the area known as the Magome Writers' Village.
A mural just outside Omori Station
depicting the faces of the Magome writers marks the eastern end of the walking trail. Much of the route is highlighted simply by plaques detailing individual writers or artists and their connection to a particular spot in the ward. However, several extant structures allow a more intimate glimpse into the lives of these cultural giants of the Taisho and Showa Periods. Visit the peaceful grounds of the home of Ozaki Shiro, a driving force in the local writer's community. Nearby, a detailed exhibit showcases the life and works of newspaper founder Tokutomi Soho. Along the southern end of the route, samples of the art of calligrapher Kumagai Tsuneko fill the rooms of her tiny home.
The Ota Folk Museum
sits at the midpoint of the route and offers a detailed look at not only the resident writers and their works but also the geography, culture and prehistory of the surrounding area. While exhibits are signed in Japanese only, an English pamphlet provides a thorough introduction to the museum's main themes.
