Jorogumo 女郎蜘蛛 / 女郎ぐも"woman spider"

Jorōgumo ( 絡新婦, じょろうぐも)
is a type of Yōkai, a creature, ghost or goblin of Japanese folklore. It can shapeshift into a beautiful woman, so the kanji for its actual meaning is 女郎蜘蛛 or "woman-spider", and to write it instead as 絡新婦 ("entangling newlywed woman") is a jukujikun pronunciation of the kanji.
In Toriyama Sekien's Gazu Hyakki Yagyō, it is depicted as a spider woman manipulating small fire-breathing spiders.
Jorōgumo can also refer to some species of spiders,
such as the Nephila and Argiope spiders. Japanese-speaking entomologists use the katakana form of Jorōgumo (ジョロウグモ) to refer exclusively to the spider species Nephila clavata.
In Edo period writings such as the Taihei-Hyakumonogatari (太平百物語) and the Tonoigusa (宿直草), there are "jorogumo" that shapeshift into women.

Jōren Falls (浄蓮の滝, Jōren-no-taki)
is a waterfall in the Yugashima district of Izu city, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, in central Izu Peninsula on the upper reaches of the Kano River. It is a Shizuoka Prefectural Natural Monument. It is one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls", in a listing published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment in 1990.
According to Japanese folklore, this is home to the legendary mistress of the Jōren Falls, Jorōgumo; a spider that can transform into a seductive woman.

taki no nushi 滝の主 The master of the waterfall 浄蓮の滝 Joren no Taki
at 天城湯ヶ島 Amagi Yugashima is Jorogumo.

At Joren no Taki 浄蓮の滝　the Jōren Falls of Izu, Shizuoka,
allegedly lives the jorōgumo mistress of the waterfall.
The local legend tells of a man who rested beside the waterfall basin when the jorōgumo tried to drag him into the waterfall by throwing webs around his leg. The man transferred the webbing around a tree stump, which was dragged into the falls instead of him.
After that, people of the village dared not venture close to the falls anymore. Then one day, a visiting woodcutter who was a stranger to this all tried to cut a tree and mistakenly dropped his favorite axe into the basin. As he tried to go down to fetch his axe back, a beautiful woman appeared and returned it to him. "You must never tell anyone what you saw here", she said. Initially he kept the secret, but as days went by, the need to spill the story burdened him. And finally at a banquet, while drunk, he told the whole story. Feeling unburdened and at peace, he went to sleep, but he never woke again.
In another version, the woodcutter was pulled outside by an invisible string and his corpse was found floating the next day at the Jōren Falls.
In yet another version,
the woodcutter fell in love with a woman he met at the waterfall. He visited her every day, but grew physically weaker each time. The priest of a nearby temple suspected that the woodcutter was "taken in by the jorōgumo mistress of the waterfall", and accompanied him to chant a sutra. When a spider thread reached out to the woodcutter, the priest let out a thunderous yell, and the thread disappeared. Now knowing that the woman was actually a jorōgumo, the woodcutter still persisted and tried to gain permission for marriage from the mountain's tengu. When the tengu denied him, the woodcutter ran towards the waterfall, where he was entangled by spider threads and disappeared into the water.

あらすじ
伊豆の天城山中、
狩野川の上流にある浄蓮の滝は、千古の大木が鬱蒼と生い茂る、夏でも肌寒さを覚える程の場所で、滅多に人が入る事も無かった。
ある時、
他国の樵が千古の大木に目をつけてやって来て、滝の傍の大木に斧を打ちこみ始めた。ひと休みしようと斧を振る手を止め、切株に腰かけて煙草を噴かしていると、いつ現れたのか1匹のジョロウグモが、樵の足許に糸を繰り出していた。
樵は見るともなしにその光景を見ていたが、やがて仕事に戻ろうと思い、足にからめられたクモの糸を切株に巻きつけて立ち上がった。と、突然凄まじい地響きが鳴り響き、糸をからげられた切株がごそっと引っこ抜かれ、あっと言う間に滝壺に引きずり込まれてしまった。
樵からこの話を伝え聞いた人々は「浄蓮の滝の主はジョロウグモに違いない」と噂し、それからと言うもの、この滝に近づく者は絶えてしまった。
それからしばらくしたある日、先の樵とは別の樵が浄蓮の滝にやって来て、大木を切る為に斧を振るい始めた。木を切り倒し、昼飯を食べている樵の足元に、いつかと同じようにジョロウグモがやって来て、同じように糸をからげ始めた。樵は昼飯を食べ終わった後、クモの糸を切株にからげて仕事に戻ろうと立ち上がると、突然凄まじい地響きと共に切株が根こそぎに引き抜かれ、突き立ててあった斧もろとも滝壺に引きずり込まれた。
驚いた樵は、
引きこまれた斧を取り返そうと思わず滝壺に飛び込んだ。すると、水中に見た事も無い美しい姫が斧を持って立っていて、「浄蓮の滝の廻りの木を切ってはなりませぬ。そして、今日の事は誰にも語ってはなりませぬ。約束を守るなら、貴方の斧は返しましょう」と言って、樵に斧を返してくれた。
樵は家に帰ると、姫との約束を守りその日の事を誰にも語らずに過ごしていたが、ある時、振る舞い酒に酔ってつい口が滑り、浄蓮の滝で出逢った姫の事をすっかり話してしまった。と、話し終わると同時に樵はポックリと死んでしまった。
こんな事があってからと言うもの、人々は浄蓮の滝の主のジョロウグモを恐れ、滝に近付く者はいよいよ居なくなってしまったと言う事だ。

This Silk Road starts deep in 多摩丘陵 the mountains of Tama.
Raw silk has been transported from 八王子 Hachioji to 横浜 Yokohama.
This part is the Hama Kaido 浜街道 Beach Road.
Also called
Yarimizu Kaido 鑓水街道 Yarimizu Highway
About 44 km.
It was used since 1859, then the silk industry grew in Japan and luggage had to be transported to the port of Yokohama.

Kinu no Michi, or Japanese Silk Road,
is a highway connecting Hachiouji City to Tokyo and Yokohama City of Kanagawa Prefecture and it follows the same journey as today's Route 16.
Hachiouji City had been known as Souto (translated as the city of mulberry) since old times and thrived with the production of raw silk. In 1859, as Yokohama opened its port to limited foreign trade, raw silk became an important export and Hachiouji became a vital hub for raw silk merchants from Nagano and Yamanashi area.
The road frequently used for the raw silk trade was called Yarimizu-kaido or Hama-kaido, but because the road was what the Silk Road was to the Asian continent, it later became known as Kinu no Michi, or Japanese Silk Road.
The road has been recognized for its historical importance and some parts of the road and vicinity were restored and preserved. In Yarimizu region of Hachiouji, there is the Silk Road Museum built inside the ruins of the mansion of a famous raw silk merchant.
The Silk Road is a valuable historical record that has many stories to tell of the silk trade merchants in late Edo period and the Meiji era to this day.

The area of present-day Hachiōji was part of ancient Musashi Province. It has been an important junction point and post town along the Kōshū Kaidō, the main road that connected the historical Edo (today's Tokyo) with western Japan. Hachiōji Castle was built during the Sengoku period in 1584 by Hōjō Ujiteru, but was soon destroyed in 1590 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Edo period, the area was tenryō controlled directly by the Tokugawa shogunate.
During the Meiji period, Hachiōji prospered as an important location for the production of silk and silk textiles.
The industry faded away, however, in the 1960s.

毎月兼題を出して会員同士切磋琢磨する充実した句会で、居心地良く和気あいあいの俳句の場を目指しており、初心者大歓迎。

In the morning of the 15th day of the first lunar month, the old mountain hag floats mochi 餅 rice cakes down the river.
If people eat these Mochi, they will be strong and healthy.
If the mountain hag makes Mochi on the 14th day, she uses a mortar and mallet made from 松 pine wood and thus the rice cakes have 松の香 a taste of pine.

Coming back from a funeral, people put the mortar and mallet outside the entrance of the home and hit the mortar two or three times.
After that they can go into the house.

kinugazuka 杵が塚 mount for the mallet
Once the grandfather of 餅屋 a mochi shop made a mistake and hit grandma so strong she fell into the mortar and died.
Grandfather was extremely sad. He burried the mortar and mallet together with grandma in a grave and planted a cherry tree on it.
Once there came a yamabushi 山伏 mountain priest and stayed at the mochi shop over night. He killed grandfather and fled with the money.
The neighbours felt sympathy for the old couple and burried grandfather in the same grave as grandma under the cherry tree.

tanmono cloth fabric

Tanmono has two main meanings.
One meaning is the fabrics used for kimonos.
The other meaning is a one-tan sized piece of fabric ('tan'is the unit for one kimono for an adult)
Usually, tanmono are rolled on a board which equals one unit. Or tanmono are wound on a bar with a radius of 1.5 cm. Or they are folded and wrapped in cardboard.
Ojiya-chijimi, 小千谷縮　which are rolled without a core, are an exception.
In old times, one-tan was 9 sun 5 bu in width and 2 jou 6 or 8 shaku in length (1 shaku equals about 30.3 cm, 1 sun equals 0.1 shaku, 1 bu equals 0.01 shaku, and 1 jou equals 10 shaku). Today, sizes are defined inthe metric system; for silk fabrics, generally, one-tan equals about 36 cm in width and about 11.4 m in length.

Tanmono,
the traditional cloth of Japan that has developed for exclusively making a kimono, has a unique size specification. As a result of the restriction of hand loom and the exclusive use for kimono, a tanmono is commonly produced in about 0.38m × 12.5m size. Let's see more details on the specification of tanmono.
The width size of tanmono
is about 38cm (42cm for men's), and the length is about 12.5m. This is the necessary and sufficient size for making a suit of women's kimono (the necessary length is shorter for men). In order to make a kimono, the 0.38×12.5m rectangular fabric is divided into the 8 parts. Compared to the complex pattern-cutting of Western clothes, The cutting of a tanmono for tailoring a kimono is so simple. Making a kimono is done by the minimum required fabric without the leftovers. ...
... Basically, the width of a tanmono is 38cm. Yet, the custom-order can wider the width to some extent. While it depends on the weaving regions, the maximum width for the custom-order would be about 45cm. This is because of the structural limitation on the handloom generally used. The more than about 45cm width would require a new design of loom, manufacturing equipments or processes.

. daija, orochi 大蛇 the huge serpent, great snake .
Where the river separates into two, there is one house on the side of the smaller river.
However much flooding happens, this house is always safe.
In former times, this area was always affected by flooding. Grandmother was always worried and said she would give one of her three daughters to the master of the river, the 大蛇 Daija, if this would protect her home. From that time on a young man came to the home and said he would protect if from flooding if he could marry the daughter.
After the wedding the father of the woman had a dream: He saw his daughter wash her hair at the riverpool. When he woke up he found a piece of tanmono 反物 cloth made from three hairs of the beard of the serpent.
Twice there was a celebration in the family, and they placed this cloth near the riverpool. In response they get "trays and bowls" for all the guests.
The third time when they brought the bowls back, one lid fell into the river and swam away. From that time on they never got "trays and bowls" any more.
They brought the cloth to the temple 竜門寺 Ryumon-Ji to have it purified and properly venerated. The well from the temple is directly connected to the riverpool.

A woman who had died about 200 years ago once went to buy some tanmono 反物 cloth.
But the money she used to pay for it soon turned into leaves.

In 中川内 Nakagawachi there was once a monster "of two Tan size", coming out at night.
It came from a field where nobody wanted to plant anything any more.

A woman came to the rich neighbour to help with the birth.
As thank-you present she got a length of cloth and some money.
When she looked at this next morning, her body was full of Tanuki hair and the money had changed into the leaf of a tsubaki 椿 camellia.

Mitsumune San ミツムネサン / Mitsumine Sama 三峯様 The Mitsumine Deity
The family had a small Shrine for Mitsumine San in the back of their storehouse.
One evening a burglar came and stole the tanmono 反物 fabrics.
Next morning they found them at the gate of the temple 実成寺 Jissei-Ji in the next village.
This must have been the beneficial deed of Mitsumine San.

Zenkai 禅海 Priest Zenkai
(?1691 / ?1687 - 1774)
A priest of the 曹洞宗 Soto Zen Sect.
He was the child of 越後国高田藩士 the Lord Takada from Echigo.
His boyhood name was 福原市九郎 Fukuhara Ichikuro.
His full priest name was 真如庵禅海　Shinnyo-An Zenkai.
He became a priest after both his parents had died. He left home and walked around the country.
In 1715 he took the name of Zenkai.
He is known for digging a tunnel in Oita, the Aonodomon in the gorge 耶馬渓 Yabakei.
He stayed at the temple 羅漢寺 Rakan-Ji in Bungo, when he learned about the dangerous route along 青野渡 Aonodo, where people and horses often lost their lives.
He begun to dig a tunnel for a safer passage in this area around 1730, with the permission of
豊前国中津藩主 the Lord of the Nakatsu Domain in Bungo.
With the help of local villagers and other Daimyo from Kyushu the work was completed within about 30 years.

Once it was finished, the villagers took money from the people who used the tunnel, it was the first toll road in Japan.

This place is mentioned in the famous novel about Zenkai:
Onshu no kanata ni 『恩讐の彼方に』
by Kikuchi Kan 菊池寛 (1888 - 1948)
In the novel the hero is called 了海 Ryokai.

Aonodōmon (青の洞門 meaning "blue tunnel")
is a tourist attraction located in the gorge of Yabakei, now part of Nakatsu City, in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Legend has it that before the tunnel was built, people had to climb over the cliffs through which the tunnel is built to reach an important local shrine. The path was very dangerous and people regularly fell to their deaths.
During the Edo period, a Buddhist monk named Zenkai, who had committed a murder in his earlier life, decided to build a safe passage for worshipers in order to atone for his crime. Beginning at the age of 49, he dedicated 30 years of his life to digging the 185 metre tunnel by hand, using only a hammer and chisel.

The gorge of Yabakei (耶馬渓)
is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty spanning the municipalities of Kusu and Nakatsu in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Located within Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, it was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan during the Shōwa era. Yabakei was formerly the name of a town, but was merged into Nakatsu Municipality in 2005. 　According to Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, official confirmed report, in despite the absence of rain, suddenly landslides occurred on the mountain slope, three houses were buried in the place and six person were lives on 11 April 2018.

When 禅海上人 Saint Zenkai arrived near 糸崎浦 Itoizaki inlay on kame 亀 a turtle, the villagers saw a strange light on the sea. When they pulled it out, it was a statue of 観音 Kannon Bosatsu, so they placed the statue in the local temple.

Near the Yabakei gorge lived a woman who always prayed piously to 観音 Kannon Bosatsu.
One day she was almost killed by somebody, but the statue of Kannon appeared and took the deadly cut instead.
