"Will you look at that! They say the common people use the thing to store clothes in gege no ge. Tora uses it and carries it around, even the brush of Murasaki Shikibu mentions wisteria-braided trunks (fuji tsuzura probably an allusion to Fujitsubo). The fairy tale of the sparrows with the tongues cut off is an example for a heavy, braided trunk. A braided trunk, as old as the small trunk used to store books in (haribunko) Osan didn't need anymore and sold goes around, around in town!
"What is so funny about me carrying a braided trunk around? Even if I carry an old trunk on my back, my belt bag is full of gold coins, you just don't see them, you fools!
"Well, I guess I'm the only one here with a braided trunk on my back, the foreigners don't carry any, which must be why they are bored.

uwabami うわばみ is an old name for a large serpent.

Once upon a time, there lived a huge serpent in the area, as big as a huge tree. It caused a lot of damage to the local farmers. So they hired a Samurai to kill the serpent. They took the head of the serpent and venerated it.
uwabami うわばみ / 蟒蛇 is an old name for a very large serpent. In the local dialect, it changed to Iwagami.
The Uwabami name later changed to Orochi おろち, a serpent that likes Sake rice wind and is represented in the legend of

tora no maki 虎之巻 scroll with a tiger
Once upon a time, umakata 馬方 the owner of a horse was on his way home when he met an old ill pilgrim on the road. He took him to his home and nursed him. Just before his death, the pilgrim said: "This is a secret scroll, you must never look at it!" and gave him the scroll.
Later there was a fire in the village and the horse owner took the scroll and brought it to the shrine where 岩神明神 Iwagami Myojin is venerated.
It stayed there with its name, Scroll with a Tiger and nobody has ever looked at it.

At the foot of the mountain there are two rocks, venreated as 岩神 Iwagami.
East of them there was a small field, but people should not use it because bad things would happen. Tanuki, the messenger of Iwagami, would play his tricks.
So this field was called Tanuki-chi タヌキ地 / 狸地 "Tanuki land".

On the Westernn slope of 龍房山 Mount Ryubusuyama there is a hamlet called 秋切集落 Akkiri.
There is 石神 a stone deity named Ryu no Tama 龍之玉. In the nearby river the tatsu no koma 龍の駒 horse of the deity comes do drink.

Shibagami 柴神様 Shibagami san / 柴取り神 Shibatorigami

At the entrance of a pass or mountain road passing people and forest workers make offerings for their safety to a deity called Shibagami.
They offer a few branches of shiba 柴 brushwood or kusa 草 grass from the roadside.

Shibatatsuhime Jinja 柴立姫神社

On the way up to the Shrine is a red Torii gate and this male symbol.
People come here to pray for children, not getting female diseases and other problems during a pregnancy.
Once upon a timeon
a Samurai and his daughter passed here on a long journey. The daughter was very tired but her father got angry, killed her and buried her, putting a piece of shiba 柴 brushwood on the grave.
The villagers took pity of the girl and built a small Shrine to venerate her.
Since then women with female health problems come here to pray.

Oshiori Sama, O-Shiori sama オシオリサマ，足軽るさま Ashigaru Sama
At the entrance of the village is a valley called シオリ谷 Shioridani.
In former times, 柴折りさま Shibaori sama was venerated here.
If people offer some shiba 柴 brushwood before leaving the hamlet, they will walk easily (ashigaru, ashi ga karuku naru)

If there are two hamlets connected via a pass, there is just one way to reach each other.
Each hamlet has a statue of 地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu called オシオリサマ O-Shiori Sama.
If travelers pass the statue, they make offerings of shiba brushwood and pray that they will walk easily.

Shibagami シバガミ
If people pass a road with a statue of 石地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu or 道祖神 the Dosojin Wayside gods, they make offerings to シバオリサン Shibaori san of shiba brushwood and pray for the safety on the road.
To get protection from the pranks of tanuki 狸 badgers, yamainu 山犬 wolves or notsugo ノツゴ Yokai monsters, they break (ori) green grass by the roadside and make an offering.

notsugo (notsuko) is an invisible yokai that makes it difficult for villagers to walk in the forests.
In other places it makes the sound of a child crying or screaming.

If people make a fire on the day of this deity, there will be a fire in their home.

If someone walks up a mountain road and suddenly feels very hungry and cold sweat, this is called ダリガミ Hidarigami
In Tosayama this is called kuwan クワン. In that case one must put something to eat into the mouth, even a rain of rice will do.
If one makes proper offerings to Shibaori Sama, this will not happen.
kuwan kuwan クワン imitates the sound of a fox.

This temple was build in 1061 by 頼空上人 Saint Raiku and later under the protection of the Nitta daimyo family. In 1333 under the protection of Godaigo Tenno it became a "Temple with seven important buildings" and 12 housings for monks.

The present Fudo Hall was constructed in 1705. The building on the leading road has two stories and is called Niten-Mon 二天門.

The small Fudo Tabernacle contains two statues of Fudo. One is about 5.5 cm high and made from "Enbudagon 閻浮檀金 (noble gold)", a special gold with a redish shine from the "Enbuda Forest" and was made in 1333 for the Nitta family.
It is called "Nitta Fure Fudo Son" 新田触不動尊.

The other statue is about 76 cm high and made from wood.It was carved in one night, the Fudo revealing himself in the statue, Miei Fudo Myo-O 御影不動明王 and has no flaming halo in the back.

The main hall of the temple houses another statue of Fudo Myo-O 倶利伽藍不動明王, also a protector deity of the Nitta family.

In 1794 a memorial stone for Matsuo Basho was built and later more material about 21 haiku poets with relations to Ojima Village was collected.

One of them is known as Nitta Fure Fudo, a god believed to have transformed himself to be a Buddhist monk and who informed the Nitta clan of Yoshisada's attack to destroy the Kamakura government. The name Kasakake refers to the geography, a plain named 笠懸野 Kasakakeno along the river 渡良瀬川 Watarasegawa in the form of a 扇状 fan.
Kasagake or Kasakake is a sort of Japanese mounted archery.
In contrast to 流鏑馬 yabusame, the types of targets are various and the archer shoots while riding past the target.

The temple was built in the Kamakura period. When 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi Kukai passed here, a statue of 白衣観音菩薩 Byakue Kannon in white robes made by 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu was venerated here.
In 1335, 南の御方 Minami no Onkata (Taira no Tokiko) came to live here.

A wealthy man named 赤堀の道元 Akahori no Dogen had a daughter of 16 years. She went to Mount Akagisan 赤城山, jumped into the swamp and became a huger serpent.
Her friend, who did not dare to go back home, also jumpee in and became kani カニ a crab. The water has been clear since then.
In rememberance of her death, the family goes to the swamp to pray and bring offerings of sekihan 赤飯 red ritual rice and sake 酒 rice wine in a juubako重箱 food box with many layers. The box usually sinks down to the bottom and later comes up, all empty.

In Kasakake village there lived a child with ill legs. When this child died, the parents had a special ritual with in 印 a mark for his burial.
Later another child was born with this mark, so it must have been a rebirth.

後深草天皇正嘉元年の鎌倉大地震につづき、正元年中の全国の飢餓は、この佐波路の領民も、その外でなく多くの村民は瀕死の状況にありました。
亮海上人は釈迦牟尼世尊の霊告をうけ、亀山天皇文応元年（1260年）この地に草庵を結び、ひたすら本尊に村民の救済加護を祈願した処、たちまちに飢餓、病魔等を退散させることができたことから、長安寺のなさけ釈迦の名も今に口伝されています。
この亮海上人草庵建立の文応元年（1260年）を開山の年とし、爾来760年有余風雪に耐え、地域の心の依所として今日に輝かしい法燈をつたえています。

『声色当リ狂言』
This book is a play script published for fans who love to enjoy Kowairo (to mimic an actor's voice).
In the first half of the book, same as normal play script for Kowairo, famous great lines were extracted from the programs on the board and listed up by actor. In the same page, the actor's crest, status, name of family, and even Haimyo (offstage name) were written with his name as well, so readers can easily get information about their favorite actor.
In following pages, Nigao (likeness painting) of each actors were printed in variety of colours, so fans enjoyed the feeling of acting on the stage by looking at the image and mimicking the line.
In the last half of the book,
short evaluation of each actor of those days who performs in Edo was written.
For example, for the actor Ichikawa Danjyuro the eighth the lines of the popular hero Soga Goro Tokimune was chosen, but the writer's evaluation doesn't look like an actor critique, it refers to nothing but a carp. But it was one of popular technique of Edo culture "Mitate" (viewed as), even when the writer did't mention about the actor or acting, features of the fish worked like metaphors of them.

Japanese films were first produced in 1899.
The first films made were simple recordings of kabuki theater pieces. The camera was placed in front of the stage and recorded the scene exactly as it was played out for the kabuki audience. In order to recreate the theatrical experience, these films were shown with a number of performers known as kowairo who stood at the side of the screen and spoke the dialogue of the kabuki actors who appeared on screen. Thus, the first Japanese films were actually simple reproductions of kabuki performances, shown with kowairo who spoke the dialogue of the original text. There was no need for intertitles or cinematic technique. Indeed, these were simple recordings of kabuki, not cinematic creations. In keeping with the original kabuki piece, a suitable kowairo was chosen for each of the kabuki actors; a child was used to dub in the voice of a child appearing on screen, an old man for an old man. If there were not enough kowairo to cover all the voices of the characters in the film, one kowairo changed his or her voice and handled two or more roles. The kowairo underwent special training to learn to change their voices.
Therefore, a distinction is evident between the kowairo, who was trained as a narrator to read the lines of kabuki texts, and the benshi, who introduced, interpreted, commented on and lent his or her voice to the characters of a film. ...

An old man who liked to scold young people once killed niwatori 鶏 a chicken.
One of the young people imitated the voice of a ghost (yuuren in the local dialect) and called the old man:
"Why did you kill the chicken? Give us back the chicken!"
The man threw out the chicken and the young people ate it for dinner.

Muro Fudo 茂呂不動
石岡山-Ishiokayama 不動院 Fudo-In 退魔寺 Taima-Ji

群馬県伊勢崎市美茂呂町 / 3612 Mimorocho, Isesaki, Gunma

In the year 1371, the lord of the castle 茂呂勘解由左衛門尉 Muro Kankaiyoshi Saemonnojo hat the temple 香華院 Kogei-In erected in the castle compound.
A statue of Fudo Myo-O carved by Kobo Daishi was enshrined.
From the temple 鶏足寺 Keisoku-Ji the Zen priest 道照禅師 Dosho Zenji was called to lead the rituals.
Later the temple was named Taima-Ji.

When 石田三成 Ishida Mitsunari passed 伊勢崎 Isesaki, there was a bridge (now 光円橋 Koenbashi), where a monster passed by every night and shocked the villagers. Mitsunari drove the monster away and the name of the temple was changed.
The crest of the temple is the same as that of Mitsunari.

In the year 1663, many buildings were lost during a fire, but reconstructed in 1670.
The large Fudo Hall was build in 1677.
The main statue is 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai.
子安観音 Koyasu Kannon is also venerated.

The roof of the Fudo Hall was repaired in 1988.

The main gate of the temple has 扁額 a framed inscription, 「不動院」 Fudo-In.
