. 釈迦如来 Shaka Nyorai - Introduction .

- Chant of the temple
なうまく さんまんんだ ぼだなんばく

The temple was founded in 702 by 妙光比丘 the Nun Myoko.

It was one of the four sub-temples of 室生寺 the Temple Muro-Ji.
In the beginning it contained the seven buildings of a great temple.
In 1165, it became even larger.
In 1291, the 五輪塔 Gorinto stone pagoda was built.
In 1597, the main hall was re-built. The present-day main hall dates from 1792.
The old mountain name was 日光山 Nikkozan. Now it is Tahozan.

In the compound is a stone marker with the inscription:
「弘法大師霊場 Sacred place dedicated to Kobo Daishi」and
「女人高野北門」the North-Gate of Koyasan for the Ladies.
In the compound are six stone statues of 福寿延命地蔵 Jizo Bosatsu for a long life.

Juusanbutsu 十三仏 Jusan Butsu, 13 Buddhas

- quote
The Thirteen Buddhas (十三仏, Jūsanbutsu) is a Japanese grouping of Buddhist deities,
particularly in the Shingon and Tendai sects of Buddhism.
The deities are, in fact, not only Buddhas, but include bodhisattvas and Wisdom Kings.
In Shingon services, lay followers recite a devotional mantra to each figure, though in Shingon practice,
disciples will typically devote themselves to only one, depending on what the teacher assigns.
Thus the chanting of the mantras of the Thirteen Buddhas are merely the basic practice of laypeople.

Funeral rituals
The Thirteen Buddhas are also an important part of a traditional Japanese Buddhist funeral service,
with each deity having a corresponding memorial service for the deceased.
The thirteen in Japanese and Sanskrit and the corresponding date of their service after the death are:

01 Fudō (Acala), 7th day - 不動明王
02 Shaka (Sakyamuni), 14th - 釈迦如来 day
03 Monju (Manjushri), 21st day - 文殊菩薩
04 Fugen (Samantabhadra), 28th day - 普賢菩薩
05 Jizō (Ksitigarbha), 35th day - 地蔵菩薩
06 Miroku (Maitreya), 42nd day - 弥勒菩薩
07 Yakushi (Bhaisajyaguru), 49th day - 薬師如来
08 Kannon (Avalokitesvara), 100th day - 観音菩薩
09 Seishi (Mahasthamaprapta), 1st anniversary - 勢至菩薩
10 Amida (Amitabha), 2nd anniversary - 阿弥陀如来
11 Ashuku (Akshobhya), 6th anniversary - 阿閦如来
12 Dainichi (Vairocana), 12th anniversary - 大日如来

The Statue of Jizo Bosatsu had originally fallen into the water near the hamlet Maine.
Every night there was a strange light coming from the sea.
When the fisherman looked for it and found a statue.
It was placed in a small hut.
But every evening, when the fisher women and children were on their way home,
it touched their bodies.
So the villagers cut of its fingers.
After that, the Jizo statue was placed in the main hall

The temple was founded in 1181 by 林秀僧正 Priest Hayashi Hideo.
He received a stone from Hieizan, on which Dengyo Daishi had carved Yakushi Nyorai.
He build a temple in 二条室町 Kyoto, Nijo Muromachi, and called it Eifuku-Ji.
Around 1250, the mother of a priest named 善光 Zenko became ill.
She went to the temple to pray for healing, but did not get better.
The priest thought she wanted to eat tako 蛸 an octopus,
took kyoobako 経箱 a sutra box and went to the market.
He bought an octopus and put it into the sutra box.
He prayed all the time on the way back home to 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.
When he opened the box the ocotpus had changed into
法華経八軸の経巻 eight sutra scrols of the Hoke Kyo Sutra.
From the scrolls bright light flowed to all directions
and to the ill monther, who recovered soon after.
Since then, the temple statue was called Tako Yakushi 蛸薬師 Octopus Yakushi.

- quote
When you visit a temple, it is important to follow the proper etiquette.
First, put your hands together and bow in front of the first gate.
Second, purify your hands with water.
Third, if you are taking part in a pilgrimage, you may want to offer osamefuda,
a paper slip with your name written on it, which indicates that you visited a temple.
(In recent years, pilgrims no longer write their contact information on these papers to prevent crime.)
Then, you should light an incense stick or a candle.
These days the candles and incense are burned outdoors to prevent fire.
You need to throw in a coin in the offering box if you take an incense stick or candle.
If there is no ceremony happening and the doors are unlocked, you can enter the temple.
Remove your shoes and place them toes out, neatly together at the bottom step.
Bow before you enter the temple itself and do not enter the altar area.
Sitting quietly with your legs underneath you near the entrance, facing the altar,
will allow you to observe the beauty and peace of the temple without breaking any taboos.
There is a big difference between the popular pilgrimage to 88 temples on the island of Shikoku.
To put it simply, those 88 temples are on the roads and places where Kukai, founder of the Shingonshu sect of Buddhism, actually went.
In contrast, the 33 temples in Iwami are for 33 Kannon to deepen believers’ faith.
But even if you are not Buddhist, you can enjoy looking at these ancient temples
and appreciating the lifestyle and devotion of earlier peoples.

Mibudera 壬生寺 Mibu-Dera, Kyoto
京都市中京区壬生梛ノ宮町31 / 31 Mibu-naginomiya-cho, Nakagyō ward, Kyoto

The main statue is 延命地蔵菩薩 Enmei Jizo Bosatsu.
The Yakushi Statue is known as 歯痛止薬師 Ha-itamidome Yakushi,
Yakushi to heal toothache.

The temple has taken on several other names such as
Jizō-In (地蔵院), Hōdō Sanmai-Ji (宝幢三昧寺), and Shinjōkō-In (心浄光院).
The current abbot is Shunkai Matsuura.
Temple records state that Mibu-dera was originally established for the Chinese monk Jianzhen (688-763),
known as Ganjin in Japan.

- quote
The temple was founded in 991 by the 円覚上人Priest Kaiken of Onjō-ji as a gift to his mother.
In 1005 a memorial service was held in which the temple was given the name
"Komii-dera (小三井寺, lit. "little Mii-dera")" in reference to the founder's original temple.
It is said that the title "Jizō-in" was bestowed on the temple during Emperor Shirakawa's imperial visit.
The priest Engaku of the Yuzu Nembutsu school restored the temple in the medieval period.
Tradition holds that he was responsible for establishing the practice of the Mibu Dai Nembutsu Kyōgen,
now an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
Towards the end of the Edo period, the Tokugawa Bakufu established the Mibu Rōshigumi
at the nearby stronghold, the Yagi House (八木家 Yagike).
The Mibu Rōshigumi were an elite public security corp that would later be known as the Shinsengumi.
Mibu-dera's grounds served as the base for the organization's military and martial arts training.
A bronze statue of commander Kondō Isami stands within the temple precincts,
as well as a grave-site for Shinsengumi regimental soldiers.
The resting place of Kondō Isami is believed to be elsewhere.
Mibu-dera's main image was originally a half-lotus seated Kṣitigarbha statue,
fashioned in the latter part of the Kamakura period, affectionately dubbed "Mibu Jizō" among the local faithful.
The image was destroyed by arson along with the main hall on July 25, 1962.
After the fire, a standing Kṣitigarbha statue was relocated from the head temple Tōshōdai-ji
and became the temple's new main image.
The main hall was rebuilt in 1967.
