The Rokujurokubu pilgrimage started a long time ago, already mentioned in the 太平記 Taiheiki history written in the 14th century.
There are various ways to do it.
A pilgrim copies the 法華経 Hokekyo Lotus Sutra 66 times and brings a copy each to 66 temples in 66カ国 66 different domains of Japan.
Others carried 66 copies to just one domain of Japan. There were no special temples to bring the sutas to.
Some wore a special robe and hat, others looked more like 山伏 Yamabushi mountain priests.
The pilgrims were thought to possess special powers and were also called 箱根法師 Hakone Hoshi or 箱根権現の僧 Hakone Gongen no So.
Some were considered as semi-religious itinerant beggars who frequented the highways of Edo Japan.
Many begging pilgrims died somewhere on their long road and were burried by the local people.
Some pilgrims promised to heal certain illnesses after their death, if the villagers built a sanctuary for them and venerated there.



During the Edo period the pilgrim could also carry a wooden backpack with a Buddha statue, walk to 66 temples while hitting a kane 鉦 prayer bell and ask for offerings.
Pilgrimages were quite popular during this time as a means to get out of Edo and get a permission to travel freely round the country.
The Rokubu pilgrims were just as popular as the Henro pilgrims in Shikoku.

Some Rokubu pilgrims just walked the 西国巡礼 Saikoku Kannon Pilgrimage to 33 temples twice or went to the 国分寺 Kokubun-Ji domaine temples or 一宮 Ichinomiya domaine Shrines.

rokubu-gasa 六部笠 special straw hat for a Rokubu pilgrim
Made of dried igusa イ草 reeds (the same as used for Tatami mats).
The hat is nine inches deep and two feet wide and is laquered black. sometimes with a center top and lower edge laquered chocolate brown. ... this deep hat conceals the face, so it can be worn for the same purpose as the tengai. The Rokubugasa has been adapted for stage wear by all classes.

商家の妻が病気で臥せっているところ、訪れた六十六部が床下より北方3間ばかりのところに鶏が埋めてある、と告げた。翌日さっそく言われたところを掘ってみると、生きているかのような白雄鶏が発見された。鶏をつかった呪いであるという。

On 人骨山 mount Hitoboneyama (human bones) 218 m, there lived a demon, who needed a human sacrifice every year.
Once an itinerant Rokubu came and tried to help them. A strong dog came running from the west and finally drove away the demon.

流山市加1丁目
This memorial was erected in 1767 when a Rokubu pilgrim died in the village. They erected a stone memorial and a small hall around it, 六部尊堂, promising to worship there regularly.
But over the years all was forgotten and nobody cared for it any more.


But in 1958 a new hall was built and the neighbors begun to worship again. The hall was renewed in 2014.

In the house of a family where a Rokubu had stayed over night, there was a son who had no eyes, nose or mouth. When they poured some powder from a grinder over his head, the hair begun to move and take in the powder.
In another house there was a son who from the waist down looked like a horse.

daija 大蛇 huge serpent
Around 1775, a farmer from Takeno had killed a huge serpent which had devastated his buckwheat field. Since than, many small snakes had appeared in his home. To appease the soul of the serpent, the farmer decided to become a Rokubu pilgrim and also built a stone memorial. But until further generations of his family, bad luck continued. The water of the river which was filled with the liquid from the dead serpent, was unsuitable not only for humans, but also for horses and cows.

Once a Rokubu was killed by the villagers by mistake and burried in an estate called チンチン屋敷 Chinchin yashiki.
Every night the sound of a bell, like CHINCHIN , was heard in the village. So the villagers kept holding rituals for the Rokubu.

tatari 祟り the curse
In 中原の洞 the cave of Nakahara an itinerant Rokubu had fallen ill and died. People from nearby made a grave for him. Son after that there was a fire in the neighbourhood. They had a Shaman find out about the origin and he told them, the grave of the Rokubu had been too simple, so he put a curse on them.
They re-built the grave and cared for it more carefully from now on.

ryuu no tama 龍の玉 dragon ball
There was a family in posession of a dragon ball. An itinerant Rokubu had left it there as a thank-you present.
If they rub it, eye disease will be healed.

Once the ball was investigated by 大阪の博物館 the Osaka Museum. They found it was one of the two special dragon balls in Japan, the 女玉 Female Ball.
"If someone finds 男玉 the Male Ball, we will buy it immediately!"

oni odori 鬼踊 the dancing demon
Once upon a time, every year at the annual festival a girl had to be offered in a white chest as ikinie 生贄 a human sacrifice.
Once an itinerant Rokukbu thought this was the doing of a Yokai monster. So he put a dog into the chest instread of a girl.
And indeed, 古狸 an old Tanuki badger came to get the offering, was bitten by the dog and died.

ある闇夜に化け物が出ると噂される古宮に目印を立てにいくこととなる。血気にはやる男を驚かそうと仲間の1人が先まわりして白装束のさばき姿で鳥居の上に身を潜める。そこへ件の若者が心細さのあまり頭に赤熊をかぶり鬼面をつけてやって来る。これに驚いた白装束は手をすべらせて鬼の頭上に落ちかかる。気絶した二人の失態に満座は大笑いとなる。

Once a traveling 能楽師 Noh-Master stayed over night in an old temple hall. Since it was so cold, he put a demon mask over his face to sleep. Some other people around thought it was indeed an Oni !

Nagoya-shi, Atsuta-ku, Takakurachō, 5−8
Every year on the 5th of January the ritual of Shuushoo-E 修正会 is celebrated.
It is also known as
the "Festival of the Demons of Yakushi Nyorai 大薬師の鬼祭".
12 men from Atsuta of the age of 25 and 42 (13 men on a leapyear) participate.
The demon masks of the temple are made of strong thick paper and ward off evil influence for the coming year.
The masks are imitations of the one's from the "Bull Festival of Kyoto" 京都牛祭.

onioba, oni-oba 鬼おば "old Hag Demon" - 赤鬼の面 mask of Aka-Oni
A traveling child once lost its way and stayed over night in a lonely house. The owner was the Old Hag Demon with a maks of a red Oni. When the child woke up at night, it saw the demon roast a baby on a stick and devour it. It ran away as fast as it could and was saved by a charcoal maker in the forest.

oni no men 鬼の面
The daughter-in-law went out every evening with a scarf covering her head. The old mother-in-law did not like that and tried to frighten her with the mask of an Oni.
But the daughter was not surprized at all, she just sat down and folded her hands in prayer. When mother wanted to go away, she could not get the mask off her face.
This is the origin of the rock called でこしき岩 dekoshiki-iwa, おでこさん O-deko San "Head Rock".

福島伊予守屋敷の雪隠に、妖がいた。夜、厠へ行くと毛の生えた長い爪の手で尻を撫でられた。ある人がその厠へ行くと、屋根から鬼面に似た顔が覗き、尻を撫でられた。これと組討し、刺殺したところ、大きな猿であった。

夕方歩いていると、於三という狐がいた。そこで鬼面とお多福の面をかぶって驚かせたら、於三葉びっくりしてお面を欲しがった。鬼面をあげたお礼に於三は化け方を教えた。その後於三は鬼の面を口にくわえているところを侍に斬られて死んだ。

ある時、能師が於三という狐に会った。能師はいろいろな面をかぶって変化してみせて於三を驚かせた。於三がせがむので能師は鬼の面をひとつあげた。後に於三は鬼の面をかぶっているところを猟師に撃たれて死んだ。

節分の日、男は鬼の面をかぶって戸口に外に立ち、女はお多福の面をかぶり連れ立って家々を廻る。お多福が家に入ると鬼も入ろうとするが、お多福は鬼が入るのを制し、そしてその家から米や銭をもらう。

The origin of this word comes from a child's play, where kids put both hands on their face to pretend they are an Oni.
When a child does not go to sleep easily, the mother who sleeps close to it tells them to go to sleep fast, otherwise a real Oni would come and bite it.
There are also many fearful Yokai masks in Kagoshima. If parents want to chide their kids, they tell them
"men don ga kuru" 面どんが来る "The honorable Mister Mask is coming."

The words モッコ mokko, モウコ mooko or 嚙もうぞ hamoozo are also known in other parts of Japan.

Before entering the outhouse, you have to cough lightly to clear the throught and give the Toilet Deity a signal of your coming.
Once 比丘 a nun forget to do this, went inside and so dirt got on the demon mask. The Demon got angry and prevented the nun to come again, causing hermental disturbances.

Below the prongs is the face of an Oni.



..... Ninigi-no Mikoto descended on top of the Holy Mt. Takachiho-no-Mine. ... This mysterious Heavenly Lance has been the cause of much speculation and opinion as to why it was staked upside down in the top of the mountain Takachiho-no-Mine.

onioshi, oni-oshi 鬼押 "hitting the Oni"
A New Year ritual on the first day of the second lunar month.
Two men, one with a red and one with a blue demon mask walk around the temple hall three times. After that 100 men waiting outside with oak wood sticks surround them and hit them. A man who hits an Oni will have good luck and a rich fishing harvest in the coming year.
The two actors of the Oni are not to complain, even if they get hit hard and die from the hitting.

This shichido no men 七道の面 "mask of seven roads" is from the shrine 北城の切久保の宮 Kirifurimiya at Hokujo hamlet.
This is a story of a daughter-in-law who got harassed by her mother-in-law. The daughter stole 鬼面 one mask and tried to frighten her mother at night. But the mask kept sticking to her face, so the woman went to a cave at 楠川 the river Kuzugawa.
That is why to our day there are only six masks at the shrine.

鬼面山 Mount Kimenzan and a Tengu legend
The mother of this story teller was kidnapped by a Tengu living on mount Kimenzan. when she was young.
While she was near a tree in her garden, a tengu came and lured her away. Suddenly she was on top of Mount Kimenzan. She took care of the household of the Tengu for a while and was then suddenly back home.

At 長谷寺 the temple Hasedera in 麻布笄町 Azabu, Kogaicho.
源義朝の臣、渋谷金王麿が長者丸というところに築城のとき、城の北隅に鎮地の神として石像を埋め置いた。江戸時代に阿部豊後守の臣安川繁成がその地に住んで井戸を掘りその石像を発見した。これを身近に置いて愛玩していると金王麿の霊がたびたび奇瑞を現すので、ついに奉安したものという。その後石像にかたどった鬼の面を奉納し、祈願すると霊験あらたかといわれ今なお多くの信仰を得ている。

When the beautiful 小野小町 Ono no Komachi looked at her face at the river 吾妻川 Agatsumagawa, she saw her face all tired from the long travel and wrote a waka poem about it.
Then the river got his name "River showing a Demon Face".
Due to a curse of Ono no Komachi there grows only one-sided reed along the river Omonogawa.

Omonogawa-River - The Shore: The Relationship Between Man and River
The source of Omonogawa-River springs from Akita and Yamagata prefectures. Located at the border of Daisenyama-Mountain that stands at 920m above sea level, it provides fresh water to the famous rice-producing Yokotebonchi-Valley.


Stretching 133km long, Omonogawa-River is a relatively calm river. It flows from the capital of Akita Prefecture.
In the past,
Akita had an extended shipping system and Omonogawa-River was used as one of its main transportation medium for rice crops and Japanese cedar lumber.
Currently,
the river system supports disaster prevention measures. It also creates and manages outdoor leisure centers for the benefit of the residents of the valley, reducing at the same time, the gap between man and nature.
To this effect, the city of Omagari, which has a history of more than 80 years of firework-producing technology, holds a national competition that attracts more than 10,000 spectators every summer to its riverbanks.

At the 不動の滝 Fudo Waterfall upstream of the river Takashitanigawa 高科谷川 Fudo Myo-O is venerated. When there is a water shortage in the village, people come here to pray.
If a frog appears while they pray, then rain will fall soon.
If bees come out while they pray, it will not rain for a while.

If people with eye problems pray to it, their eyes will get healed.

chinoike jigoku 血の池地獄 Chi no Ike - hell blood pond
A small pond near the 折靑渓不動の瀧 Fudo Waterfall before the 観音橋 Kannonbashi bridge. Mothers who die in childbirth have their blood flow in this pond.
Their relatives bring half of a white hand towel, make a knot in the four corners to scoop some water from the small river and leave it at the side.
Other travelers pick it up and ask for water to be scooped into the towel. If it soon shows a hole and the water flows out, this person will go to paradise fast after his/her death.

Upstream the river 物部川 Monobegawa there is a place named 切石 Kiriishi (cut stone) with many rocks. The big ones are 立岩 Tateiwa and 双子岩 Futagoiwa, a smaller one is called 島岩 Shimaiwa.
The river between Futagoiwa and Shimaiwa is quite dangerous for children to play. In the space between the rocks stands the 不動の岩 Fudo Rock.
A child once tried to split this Fudo Rock, but the child went crazy soon after.
Once upon a time
a tanuki 狸 badger lived between these rocks. People who came to gather firewood have seen it near the willow tree beside the Fudo Rock, sometimes shape-shifting into a strange human figure.

O-bake ishi お化け石 The ghost stone



In July of 1975 there appeared a ghost face on the memorial stone for Narita Fudo Myo-O 成田山不動明王石碑に幽霊. Some said it was the ghost of whe samurai Taira no Masakado 平将門様, others said it looked like their grandpa, others saw a woman in white robes carrying a child. No, it was a white cat buried below the stone. . . . All kinds of visions!



This story got so famous that it was even shown on TV and the village was flooded with inquisitive tourists. They needed a car parking space and the road to the Stone was always packed with cars. Then in the end it became clear that the "ghost" was some dried autumn grasses 枯れ尾花 and the fame died down, the village became quiet again.

On the way to the outhouse toiled, under the persimmon tree, there were two balls of fire rolling around. Coming closer, they vanished.
When asking the parents about his vision, he was told this was the deed of a mujina ムジナ.
Grandmother had once seen a ball of fire under the pine tree near the Fudo sanctuary and also said it was just a mujina badger.

the stone that sparkled all night

This region, once ruled by the 佐竹家 Satake clan cam under the lordship of the Tokugawa.
The graves stones of the Satake clan had been removed and thrown into the river. Among the grave stones was also a stone statue of Fudo Myo-O which begun to sparkle at night. 丹下の宗助 Tange no Sosuke picked up the stone and began to venerate it.

In the old postal town 藤代宿 Fujishiro juku a girl of just eight years gave birth to a baby boy. This was very special and she got money to live a good life.
When they dug for a well in her new residence, there was a huge stone. Inside the stone was a statue of a golden Buddha, 不動尊 a golden Fudo.

東磐井郡 Higashi Iwai district 大東村 Daitomura

Once a villager was cutting down trees. He came to the hamlet of 野田集落 Noda and cut the branches of a torii Shrine gate dedicated to Fudo Myo-O お不動様の鳥居 and spent the night in the Fudo Hall. Because it was bitter cold he tore off the flags and used them to cover his shivering body. Then at midnight there was a sound at the front door.
And then next morning he could not move his body. Because he had slept in the same direction as the deity, he had been obstructing the deity from leaving the hall and this was his punishment.

zashikiwarashi, zashikiwaraji ザシキワラシ/ 座敷わらし Zashiki Warashi Child
Once there was a fire in the village and just then a child with short cut hair おかっぱ姿 walked by the homes asking for food because it was hungry. The people were busy putting out the fire and did not pay attention to the child, but despite all their effort the home burned to the ground.
Another home, where the folks  took the time to give some food to the child, did not burn down.
Now they say it was O-Fudo sama walking around trying to prevent the fire from spreading.

On Zashiki-Warashi
Zashiki-warashi ("zashiki" meaning the tatami room of traditional Japanese houses, and "warashi" meaning a kid or small child) are often seen as a kind of omen in the houses of once-great families on the verge of decline.

Once an old woman was cleaning the toilet, but happened to get some dirt on the Fudo venerated in the toilet 便所の不動尊. Then came the village sports event in autumn, but this time she could not participate because her whole body ached for two days.

yama no sei, sansei 山精 spirit of the mountain
The wife of 猟師善助 the hunter Zensuke went to the mountain forest to gather firewood. Somehow she lost conscience. When she returned to herself and went home, she found herself pregnant. Eventually she gave birth to 岩八 Iwahachi. The same happened again a few years later and this time she gave birth to 喜八 Kichachi.
All this happened because the Spirit of the Mountain and 山鬼 the Demon of the Mountain had an adventure with her.
Both Iwahachi and Kihachi had bright red hair.

Sansei Zatsumi Kijin 山精雑魅鬼神 (さんせいざつみきじん)
A kind of 精霊悪鬼 bad Oni with more knowledge and power than a human being, alive in the muontains, trees and other natural phenomenon.
『法華験家訓蒙』に述べてあるところによると、明治の初年頃、鎌倉地方で鉄道建設の際、古墳の移転工事を行った人夫が、あるいは発狂し、あるいは死者の姓名を名乗って、その墳墓を発掘したことを怒り、奇異の挙動をなしたのを、世間の人が見て、墓の亡魂のたたりであると恐怖して、祠を作り亡魂を祭祀したことがあったという。
『訓蒙』には、これは亡魂のたたりでなく、山精雑魅の類のしわざであると説いている。
その根拠として「仏説灌頂経』第七に、凡夫の塚塔には善神の守護無く、常に山精雑魅鬼神が付着し、飯食を求め、変化をなして世人に恐怖を与えるのを、凡夫が神や魂のしわざとなすのは、邪をもって正とし魅をもって神となす誤りであると説いてあることを引用している。

Once the pious mother got lost in the mountains. Eventually they heard that she had become the wife on the Mountain Demon Deity from 太平山 Mount Taiheizan.
Her friends tried to bring her back, but could not find her.
Later she came back, telling them she also went to 出羽三山 the Three Mountains of Dewa.

Once upon a time, the area around 岩手山 Mount Iwatesan belonged to an Oni named 大猛丸 Odakemaru.
In the year 797, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro was sent to drive him out, but he hid in the mist of the deep mountain and built his castle, 鬼ケ城 / 鬼ヶ城 Onigajo.
Tamuramaro waited until the mist had dispersed, came to fight with him, drove him all the way to 八幡平 Hachimantai and finally killed him.

Akuro is known in various regions as
. Oodakemaru 大嶽丸・大竹丸・大武丸・大猛丸 Odakemaru .

At the hall 甲冑堂 in the village 東二町 Higashinicho there lived an Oni at Mount Iwakurayama who grbabed travellers, ground them in a mortar and ate them.

Uyamuya no Seki 有耶無耶関 / 有耶無耶の関 The Inamu Barrier
now at the 笹谷峠 Sasaya Pass on the border to 山形 Yamagata and the Natori district.



Once upon a time a demon haunted this pass and caused harm to travellers.
A raichoo 霊鳥 snow grouse would warn people, calling out 有耶 UYA (he is here).
If the Demon was away, it would call out MUYA 無耶 (he is not here).
The 若松観音 Wakamatsu Kannon at the side of Yamagata is called the 有耶の観音 Uya no Kannon.
The 笹谷観音 Sasaya Kannon at the side of Miyagi is called 無耶の観音 Muya no Kannon.
The snow grouse is said to be an incarnation of Kannon Bosatsu.

The demons of 一夜山 Ichiyasan "Mountain of one night"
at the time of 天武天皇 Tenmu Tenno (c. 631-686) heard a rumor that their living place would become a new settlement. To prevent this, they began to plot.
In one night (ichiya 一夜), to stop the road, they made a new mountain between the mountains 戸隠山 Togakushiyama and 戸倉山 Tokurasan.
This new mountain is now 1,561 m high.

. Sakanoue no Tamuramaro 坂上田村麻呂 (758 - 811) .

Odakemaru is another name for
Aterui アテルイ / 悪路王 Akuro-O / Acro-O 阿弖流爲 (? - 802)
He was the leader of the Emishi in Iwate. He was venerated as Kijin 鬼神大猛丸 the Demon God Odakemaru.

Mount 岩手山 Iwatesan is also called 岩手富士 the Fuji of Iwate.
Once there lived a very strong Oni named Odakemaru, who put his hand on a rock to make an impression (iwate 岩手 "rock hand").
On the Southern side of Mount Iwatesan there are still the remains of the palace of this Oni, in the form of ridge 屏風岩 "cliff like a folding screen" named
Onigajo 鬼ヶ城 "Castle of the Oni".

At the shrine 岩手山神社 Iwatesan Jinja
the deity is venerated as
岩鷲権現(がんじゅごんげん)Ganju Gongen, 田村権現 Tamura Gongen or 田村大明神 Tamura Daimyojin.
He is venerated at the stone formation 獅子頭石 Eboshi Rock.



The mountain ridge Onigajo was the realm of 大猛丸 Odakemaru, who was also known in the region as
Akagashira no Takamaru 赤頭の高丸.

Once upon a time, the area around 岩手山 Mount Iwatesan belonged to an Oni named 大猛丸 Odakemaru.
In the year 797, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro was sent to drive him out, but he hid in the mist of the deep mountain and lived in his castle, 鬼ケ城 / 鬼ヶ城 Onigajo.
Tamuramaro waited until the mist had dispersed, came to fight with him, drove him all the way to 八幡平 Hachimantai and finally killed him.

Ootakemaru 大武丸 Otakemaru and Onigajo 鬼ケ城 castle
Onigajo at mount Iwatesan is a cave where the demon 大武丸 Otakemaru lived with his disciple demons. He could command the weather and the clouds in the sky, even provoke storms and the people dreaded these demons.
Tamuramaro killed most of the demons, but some fled in the direction of 閉伊郡 the Hei district.
The last one to survive was an Oni with one eye, a messenger of 権現様 Gongen Sama. It was the job of this Oni to clean the mountain after humans had visited the top.

Odakemaru 大竹丸 Otakemaru

A beautiful female demon named Tateeboshi 立烏帽子 Lady Tate Eboshi was the wife of 鬼神 the Demon King Odakemaru.

She wanted to make 葦原の国 the province of Ashihara in Hyogo a "Land of the Demons". So she came down to earth at 鈴鹿 Suzuka (Mie).
Then she wanted to become the wife of Odakemaru to continued her evil life and sent him a letter. But he did not answer. Eventually she became his wife, but soon
Tamuramaro had a fight with her husband and herself,
Now the Devil Lady fell in love with Tamuramaro and became his wife, mending her bad ways. She later helped her human husband to drive out the demons
悪事高丸 Takamaru and 大谷丸 Otanimaru.

Aguro-Oo 阿黒王 King Aguro-O
Tate-Eboshi caused a lot of damage at 鈴鹿山 Suzukayama, a mountain range in Mie prefecture.
To become the wife of a man named 利成 Toshinari, she had him kill her Demon Husband Aguro-O.

Tachieboshi snatched the wife of Tamuramaro, but later got enlightenment by the Kannon Bosatsu from 清水寺 Kiyomizu Temple in Mie 三重県.

Maoomaru 魔王丸 Ma-O-Maru and the Oniyashiki 鬼屋敷 Oni Yashiki quarters
The demon Ma-O-Maru lived in a place called Oni-Yashiki. After Tamuramaro had killed him and cut off his head, he washed his sword in a place now called
洗い田 Senda.

番二番三郎 Banji and Bansaburo
At the time they were becoming disciples of Jikaku Daishi, there lived an Oni in the region. Banji shot an arrow from the top of 二口峠 Futakuchi Pass and killed the Oni.

He made Banji and Banzaburo his disciples.

Here the boss of the native 蝦夷 Emishi group was called 赤頭 Akagashira - "Red Head".
When Sakanoue no Tamuramaro drove out the demon, the teeth of this Oni remained.

達谷窟毘沙門堂 Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamon-Do
Akuro-O the leader of the Emishi was living in this cavern and while he was doing much harm, Tamuramaro asked help from Bishamonten and finally subjugated him.
Tamuramaro dedicated this hall after his victory over the Emishi, to appease their souls
Originally there were 108 statues of Bishamon, now 33 are still there, which are shown once every 33 years.

種山高原には、かって坂上田村麻呂が陣を構えエミシと相対したという伝承がある。またその峰伝いにには、大森山があり、その頂で人首丸が討ち取られたとして、その人首丸の墓石がある。種山から大森山は、朝廷側にとって鬼の巣食う山々であった。
This memorial stone is one of the 七庚申, when the day of Koshin happens 7 times in a year, to bring bad luck.
In the old scripts is a mention
"庚申年には蝦夷の反乱が起こる"In the year of Koshin there will be a rebellion of the Emishi!"
