Susa Jinja 須佐神社 Susa Shrine, Izumo

島根県出雲市佐田町須佐730 / Susa, Sada-cho, Izumo City, Shimane

The Deities in residence are 須佐之男命 Susanoo no Mikoto.
and his wife, 稲田姫 Inada Hime (櫛名田比売 Kushinada Hime).
Also the parents of Inada-hime
Ashimazuchi-no-mikoto and
Temazuchi-no-mikoto

The shrine was founded in 776.
The priests of the shrine are said to be descendants of Ōkuninushi.

- quote
Susa Shrine is located deep in the mountians of Sada in Izumo.
According to the ancient chronicles, after the gods Susano and Kushinada got married at Yaegaki Shrine
and made Suga Shrine their home, they set off on their travels around the country.
When they returned to Izumo they fell in love with the area of Susa.
After giving birth to many gods and creating the country, Susano handed power over to his descendents,
and laid his soul to rest here.
Behind the main shrine hall is a giant cedar tree, which is said to be 1200 years old.
It has long been worshipped as a sacred tree, and it is believed to be the dwelling place of gods and spirits.
It has recently become a popular "healing" spot, as it has been named by a spiritual healer as one of the best energy sources in Japan.
There is a well in the shrine grounds, and it is said that Susano used the water from here to purify the area. Although the well is deep in the mountains, it contains sodium, and the water has recently been found to come from to the Sea of Japan.
The waters of the hot springs in the surrounding area also contain sodium, and are well-known for their high quality.
The area around the shrine offers some spectacular rural landscapes.
The pure water river alongside the shrine runs out into the Hiikawa River.
Mt. Sentsu at the source of the river is said the be the place where Susano descended from the Celestial Plain of heaven,
and it also features in the legend of Yamata-no-orochi, as the home of the eight-headed creature.

When the wife of 平則道 Taira no Norimichi (1008 - ?). Lady Tokuni, saw this, she felt great pain in her heart.
One day, an old man with white hair passed her hut with a sigh, so she invited him inside.
As they talked, the old man said he wented to build a new bridge and asked for her help.
The old man built a new bridge in just 30 day.
After passing over the bridge, the old man said good bye and left.

Emperor Momozono 桃園天皇
(1741 – 1762)

- quote
Emperor Momozono (桃園天皇, Momozono-tennō, 14 April 1741 – 31 August 1762)
was the 116th Emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.
Momozono's reign spanned the years from 1747 until his death in 1762.
Momozono's reign was mostly quiet, with only one incident occurring that involved a small number of Kuge
who advocated for the restoration of direct Imperial rule.
These Kuge were punished by the shōgun, who held de facto power in the country.
Momozono fathered two sons with his one and only lady in waiting, but he died at a young age in 1762.
The line of succession fell to Momozono's sister, Princess Toshiko, who became Empress Go-Sakuramachi.
Due to the young age of Momozono's sons, she also became empress regent to
the future Emperor 後桃園天皇 Go-Momozono until he became of age to rule.

Suga Jinja 須我神社 Shrine Suga Jinja, Place

島根県雲南市大東町須賀260 / 260 Daitocho Suga, Unnan, Shimane

The Deities in residence are Susano-O and Kushinada Hime.

- quote
Suga Shrine [須賀神社]
is a little off the beaten path.
Japan's First Capital
Ironically, this somewhat remote area is the mythological first capital of Japan, as denoted by this sign:

- Shrine Grounds
So what is about this relatively small shrine out in the middle of almost nowhere?
Why did we both going through all the trouble to get here?
Speaking from the mythological of the Kojiki, Suga Shrine is where Susano-o and Kushinada lived
after the defeat of Yamata no Orochi.
Upon arriving here Susano-o felt rather inspired and recited the first poem in Japanese literature.
This same poem is on a large rock just inside of the shrine. Roughly translated it reads:

In Izumo, where the clouds form,
I see a fence of clouds.
To protect my wife, I too, built a fence.
These clouds are as my fence.

From our perspective it is so cool to be in not only Japan's first recorded capital (even if it is just a myth), but also the place where a mythical god recited the first poem in Japanese literature.

Ema of Suga Shrine depicting Susano-o and Kushinada

Just behind the haiden is the the hoden, the main shrine building,
where Susano-o, his wife Kushinada, and their child, Yashimajinumi no kami, are enshrined.

Yakumo Yama
Sometimes shrines in Japan have two parts; that main shrine rests at the foot of the mountain, but another part of the shrine that lies near the top of the mountain. The part of the shrine at the top of the mountain is called a okunomiya [奥の宮], and that is what we were hoping to get a glace of. In the case of Suga Shrine, the okunomiya is on top of Yakumoyama.
If you head back to the road with the signs for the shrine, you will see that that road it keeps going. You will need to follow that same road for quite some time before you see another sign on your left that will point you in the direction of Yakumo yama. It is not all that far of a walk, about three kilometers or so to reach the mountain, which albeit isn't that big.
I encourage anyone going out that way to plan time for walking up Yakumo yama.
The surrounding landscape is really lovely and it is not a hard hike at all.
Take a few things with you for a light lunch and it would be a great outing.

- quote
The first shrine where fire was created
In ancient times, Kumano Taisha Shrine was known also as Izumo-no-kuni Ichi-no-miya,
which means it was the highest ranking shrine in the Izumo Region.
It is located 15km south of central Matsue in Yakumo Town.
From the road you can easily spot the concrete torii gate and the vermillion bridge that leads up to the shrine.
The deity enshrined here is Susano-o-no-mikoto who is well known through the eight-headed serpent "Yamata-no-Orochi" Iwami Kagura story.
This shrine is said to be the first shrine where fire was created.
On the shrine grounds is the Sanka-den hall, which is a structure with a thatched roof and cypress bark covered walls.
The 鑽火殿 Sanka-den Hall
houses two old-fashioned fire-kindling tools that are used in the annual Sanka-sai Fire Festival and inauguration ceremonies for the Chief Priests of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine.
The biggest setsubun festivities in Matsue are said to be at Kumano Taisha Shrine.
From the Mai-den Hall, the open building, government officials and community representatives throw out beans and mochi to the crowd of participants.

- quote
Fukuju-ji (福聚寺) is an Ōbaku Zen temple in Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka, Japan.
Its honorary sangō prefix is Kōjuzan (広寿山).
Fukuju-ji is one of two bodaiji (菩提寺), or funeral temples, dedicated to Ogasawara Tadazane, the first daimyō of Kokura Domain. (The other is Toyokawa's Rinzai-ji.)
- - - - - History
The temple was founded in 1665 by Ogasawara Tadazane with support from Sokuhi Nyoitsu, a Chinese monk.
In 1669, Ogasawara Tadataka (小笠原忠雄), the second daimyō of Kokura, began planning the construction of the temple such as Kaisandō hall, the main hall, a bell tower and so on.
Many temple structures were destroyed by fire in the Summer War of 1866.
However, much of the temple and its numerous annexes, include the Buddha-Hall (仏殿 butsuden), the Chinese style architecture rebuilt in 1802, was survived after the war.

Ogasawara Tadazane 小笠原 忠真 (1596 – 1667)
Tadazane was the son of Ogasawara Hidemasa (1569–1615)
with Toku-hime, daughter of Matsudaira Nobuyasu and granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
He married Kamehime, daughter of Honda Tadamasa with Kamehime (daughter of Matsudaira Nobuyasu)
and adopted daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
- Following the deaths of his father and elder brother in the Osaka Summer Campaign,
his holdings were transferred from Akashi Domain (100,000 koku) in Harima Province
to the Kokura Domain (150,000 koku) Buzen Province.
Famed as the lord who employed Miyamoto Musashi's adopted son Iori,
Tadazane took part in the Shogunate's campaign to quell the Shimabara Rebellion,
where the Kokura forces assisted in the execution of survivors of the rebel force, predominantly Christians.
Tadazane's son Tadataka succeeded him.
Other children included Nagayasu, Naganobu, Sanekata, and three daughters
(one of them adopted from the Hachisuka clan of Tokushima-han).
